57. Grief Shortly after Suicide and Natural Death: A Comparative Study among Spouses and First-Degree Relatives

Abstract

Chronic dysfunction after complicated grief is not rare and emphasizes the need to identify bereaved individuals at risk. Three months following bereavement, self-reported psychiatric and general health of 153 relatives of 74 suicides was worse than of 70 relatives of 39 natural deaths. Moreover, the felt need for professional help was higher among the former, even after adjustment for expectedness of death, sociodemographic differences, and relatives'/spouses' neuroticism. This suggests that suicide-bereaved individuals may constitute a high-risk group of mourners in need of targeted postvention.

Abstract

A Biographical Questionnaire (BQ) has been used in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of the Witwatersrand since the mid-80s, to identify potential to succeed at university among applicants who have not met the requirements for automatic admission. As the key instrument in a special admissions process, the BQ's history and assumptions are discussed. Reflecting on the criteria used in reading responses to the BQ, the article argues that by allowing applicants to present themselves in the context of their own lives and engagement with schooling and disadvantage, the BQ is more likely to enable candidates to reveal the qualities necessary for success at university than other admission tests. Abstract

International trade in plants and climate change are two of the main factors causing damaging tree pests (i.e. fungi and insects) to spread into new areas. To mitigate these risks, a large-scale assessment of tree-associated fungi and insects is needed. We present records of endophytic fungi and insects in twigs of 17 angiosperm and gymnosperm genera, from 51 locations in 32 countries worldwide. Endophytic fungi were characterized by high-throughput sequencing of 352 samples from 145 tree species in 28 countries. Insects were reared from 227 samples of 109 tree species in 18 countries and sorted into taxonomic orders and feeding guilds. Herbivorous insects were grouped into morphospecies and were identified using molecular and morphological approaches. This dataset reveals the diversity of tree-associated taxa, as it contains 12,721 fungal Amplicon Sequence Variants and 208 herbivorous insect morphospecies, sampled across broad geographic and climatic gradients and for many tree species. This dataset will facilitate applied and fundamental studies on the distribution of fungal endophytes and insects in trees.

16 april 2022, Item does not contain fulltext, Background: Most psychotherapy outcome research focuses on symptom reduction as a primary outcome. However, most patients do not seek psychological treatment exclusively for symptom relief, but mainly because they can no longer do what they want to do or used to do. Therefore, besides symptom reduction, also disability in daily functioning should be a focus of psychotherapy outcome research. Yet, until now there is a paucity in research pertaining to the relation between symptom reduction and reduction of disability during psychological treatment. Aims: For this reason, the aim of the current study was to examine the relationship between changes in symptom reduction (reduction in general symptom distress) and changes in self-reported disability over a period of two years in patients that receive psychotherapy for mood and anxiety disorders (N = 1182). Results: We found strong correlations between both outcome measures at all measurement points. Furthermore, results demonstrated a decrease in both outcome measures from start to end of treatment with a moderate effect for symptom distress and a small effect for experienced disability. Cross-lagged panel analysis demonstrated that a decrease in symptom distress predicted a subsequent decrease in self-reported disability, and a decrease in self-reported disability equally predicted a subsequent decrease in experienced symptom distress. Conclusion: Our results seem to indicate that both outcome measures are interchangeable in psychotherapy outcome studies for internalizing disorders.

Abstract

Insect herbivores, whose larval stages live and feed inside a plant leaf, are expected to have an impact on the leaf beyond the actual tissue damage. They might influence leaf photosynthesis. Here, we provide a brief insight by studying a simple model relationship between the spring geophyte ramsons Allium ursinum with short-lived green leaves and its oligophagous, leaf-mining hoverfly Cheilosia fasciata. We expected that the effect of leaf miners on short-lived leaves could interfere with resource allocation for the next season. Measurements of leaf greenness and chlorophyll fluorescence were performed to evaluate the stress impact of leaf miner damage upon photosynthesis during the short vegetative season of ramsons. Results showed that the onset of leaf senescence occurred earlier in infested leaves, which was also indicated by lower maximum efficiency of photochemistry compared to non-infested leaves. There was no evidence that infested leaves were able to compensate for the damage by increasing the rate of photosynthesis. Given the short lifespan of leaves and the earlier onset of senescence in infested leaves, we discuss two differential hypotheses: negative effects for the plant if the larvae have already left the mine, and negative effects for the leaf miner if the larvae are still developing inside the leaf.

Abstract

: Introduction: There is paucity of data related to potential gender differences in the use of interventions to prevent and treat cardiovascular disease (CVD) among HIV‐positive individuals. We investigated whether such differences exist in the observational D:A:D cohort study. Methods: Participants were followed from study enrolment until the earliest of death, six months after last visit or February 1, 2015. Initiation of CVD interventions [lipid‐lowering drugs (LLDs), angiotensin‐converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs), anti‐hypertensives, invasive cardiovascular procedures (ICPs) were investigated and Poisson regression models calculated whether rates were lower among women than men, adjusting for potential confounders. Results: Women (n = 12,955) were generally at lower CVD risk than men (n = 36,094). Overall, initiation rates of CVD interventions were lower in women than men; LLDs: incidence rate 1.28 [1.21, 1.35] vs. 2.40 [2.34, 2.46]; ACEIs: 0.88 [0.82, 0.93] vs. 1.43 [1.39, 1.48]; anti‐hypertensives: 1.40 [1.33, 1.47] vs. 1.72 [1.68, 1.77] and ICPs: 0.08 [0.06, 0.10] vs. 0.30 [0.28, 0.32], and this was also true for most CVD interventions when exclusively considering periods of follow‐up for which individuals were at high CVD risk. In fully adjusted models, women were less likely to receive CVD interventions than men (LLDs: relative rate 0.83 [0.78, 0.88]; ACEIs: 0.93 [0.86, 1.01]; ICPs: 0.54 [0.43, 0.68]), except for the receipt of anti‐hypertensives (1.17 [1.10, 1.25]). Conclusion: The use of most CVD interventions was lower among women than men. Abstract

Although additional cytogenetic abnormalities (ACA) do not affect the prognosis of patients with t(15;17) acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL), the role of a complex karyotype (CK) is yet to be clarified. We aimed to investigate the relationship of CK with relapse incidence in 1559 consecutive APL patients enrolled in three consecutive trials. Treatment consisted of AIDA induction followed by risk-adapted consolidation. A CK (CK) was defined as the presence of ≥2 ACA, and a very CK (CK+) as ≥3 ACA. Abstract

Dit rapport is opgesteld in het kader van de Deskstudie gebruik illegale middelen bij claims. In deze deskstudie is een marktonderzoek uitgevoerd naar aangeboden producten met claims, waarna de mogelijkheden tot controle van claims op diervoeders is uitgezocht. De claims waren meestal gebaseerd op de werking van natuurlijke middelen (bijv. kruiden). Met de recente fipronil crisis is echter wel duidelijk geworden dat het toedienen van illegale middelen tot de mogelijkheden behoort. Deze controle is gericht op de aanwezigheid van mogelijke illegale middelen die de geclaimde werking kunnen veroorzaken. Aan de hand van de gevonden aanknopingspunten is hiervoor een analysestrategie worden opgesteld. Afbakening: Het project focust zich alleen op illegale claims in diervoeders om daarmee de volgende fipronil crisis te voorkomen. Afbakening: Het project ging alleen om illegale middelen in diervoeders. Hoe voorkom je een volgende fipronil crisis. Er is gezocht naar claims die te mooi zijn om waar te zijn en diergeneeskundige claims, en alleen naar middelen voor in het dier (geen geregistreerde diergeneesmiddelen, geen omgevingsmiddelen), alleen landbouwhuisdieren (varken, pluimvee, rundvee, kleine herkauwers en paarden) en naar mogelijke risico’s voor de voedselveiligheid.

Contains fulltext : 244316.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access), BACKGROUND: The BULLSEYE trial is a multicenter, open-label, randomized controlled trial to test the hypothesis if (177)Lu-PSMA is an effective treatment in oligometastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer (oHSPC) to prolong the progression-free survival (PFS) and postpone the need for androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). The original study protocol was published in 2020. Here, we report amendments that have been made to the study protocol since the commencement of the trial. CHANGES IN METHODS AND MATERIALS: Two important changes were made to the original protocol: (1) the study will now use (177)Lu-PSMA-617 instead of (177)Lu-PSMA-I&T and (2) responding patients with residual disease on (18)F-PSMA PET after the first two cycles are eligible to receive additional two cycles of 7.4 GBq (177)Lu-PSMA in weeks 12 and 18, summing up to a maximum of 4 cycles if indicated. Therefore, patients receiving (177)Lu-PSMA-617 will also receive an interim (18)F-PSMA PET scan in week 4 after cycle 2. The title of this study was modified to; "Lutetium-177-PSMA in Oligo-metastatic Hormone Sensitive Prostate Cancer" and is now partly supported by Advanced Accelerator Applications, a Novartis Company. CONCLUSIONS: We present an update of the original study protocol prior to the completion of the study. Treatment arm patients that were included and received (177)Lu-PSMA-I&T under the previous protocol will be replaced. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT04443062 .
