The i* community has raised several main dialects and dozens of variations in the definition of the i* language. Differences may be found related not just to the representation of new concepts but to the very core of the i* language. In previous work we have tackled this issue mainly from a syntactic point of view, using metamodels and syntactic-based model interoperability frameworks. In this paper, we go one step beyond and consider the use of foundational ontologies in general, and UFO in particular, as a way to clarify the meaning of core i* constructs and as the basis to propose a normative definition. We focus here on one of the most characteristics i* constructs, namely means-end links.

Objectives To investigate whether amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) is characterised by restriction in instrumental activities of daily living (IADL). Further, to examine the role of comorbidity and cognitive performance on IADL changes in aMCI subjects. Methods The study included 132 subjects with aMCI and 249 subjects with no cognitive impairment (NCI), consecutively enrolled as outpatients in a multicentric Italian clinical-based study, the ReGAl Project. All subjects underwent a comprehensive evaluation including clinical examination, laboratory screening, neuroimaging and cognitive and behavioral assessments. Functional status was evaluated by the Lawton's Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) scale. Comorbidity was evaluated by the Cumulative Illness Rating Scale (CIRS). Cognitive evaluation included tests assessing episodic memory, language, attention/executive functioning and praxis, as well as the the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) as a measure of global cogniton. Results Subjects with aMCI had higher IADL changes than NCI. Among IADL items, aMCI subjects showed a significant impairment in shopping, taking drugs, and handling economy; however also NCI had minor IADL changes regarding cooking, washing and cleaning. IADL restriction in aMCI subjects was significantly associated with cognitive performance, mainly related to executive functioning, but not with comorbidity. On the contrary, in NCI sensory impairment accounts for slight IADL changes. Conclusion In aMCI subjects a mild degree of cognitive deterioration has a stronger impact on IADL than somatic comorbidity. Current diagnostic criteria for MCI should include a mild impairment in IADL. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

In this paper, we attempt to provide a semantic foundation for the role-related concepts in the RM-ODP. We believe that some theories of conceptual modelling may help us to provide a well-founded underpinning for these concepts, and to harmonize competing proposals for them. As a starting point of our effort, we study the definitions of Genilloud and Wegmann, and the proposed definition in the Working Document for the amendment of the standard as contributed by Linington.

In previous work, we have defined conceptual foundations that can be beneficially used in context modeling. These conceptual foundations include the separation of entity and context, and the characterization of context as either Intrinsic or Relational. This paper aims at extending this approach by introducing the ontological concept of Situation as means of composing the elements of our ontology (entities, intrinsic and relational contexts) to model particular states of affairs of interest. Our concepts have been inspired by and aligned with conceptual theories from the fields of philosophy and cognitive sciences.

In this paper we aim at defining conceptual foundations for context-aware applications. We argue that the concepts of entity and context should be separated in conceptual models for context-aware applications. Further, we propose a novel approach that characterizes context as either intrinsic or relational. The concepts we propose in this paper have been inspired by and aligned with conceptual theories from the fields of philosophy and cognitive sciences. Since we concentrate on conceptual modeling, understandability and clarity are given precedence over properties such as efficiency and tractability.

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in approaches that employ foundational ontologies as theoretical tools for analyzing and improv- ing conceptual modeling languages. However, some of these approaches do not always make explicit their ontological commitments. This leads to situations where criticisms resulting from the specific ontological choices made by a par- ticular approach are generalized to the enterprise of ontology as a whole. In this paper we discuss an example of such a case involving the BWW approach. First, we make explicit the ontological commitments underlying that approach by relating it to other possible philosophical alternatives. Second, we construct an ontological theory which commits to a different philosophical position. Third, we show how the ontology proposed here can be used to provide real- world semantics and sound modeling guidelines for the modeling constructs of Attributes, Weak Entities and Datatypes. Finally, we compare the ontology pro- posed here with BWW, thus demonstrating its benefits.

Foundational ontologies provide the basic concepts upon which any domain-specific ontology is built. This paper presents a new foundational ontology, UFO, and shows how it can be used as a foundation of agent concepts and for evaluating agent-oriented modeling methods. UFO is derived from a synthesis of two other foundational ontologies, GFO/GOL and OntoClean/DOLCE. While their main areas of application are the natural sciences and linguistics/cognitive engineering, respectively, the main purpose of UFO is to provide a foundation for conceptual modeling, including agentoriented modeling.

In this paper we present a framework for the evaluation and (re)design of modeling languages. We focus here on the evaluation of the suitability of a language to model a set or real-world phenomena in a given domain. In our approach, this property can be systematically evaluated by comparing the level of homomorphism between a concrete representation of the worldview underlying the language (captured in a metamodel of the language), with an explicit and formal representation of a conceptualization of that domain (a reference ontology). The framework proposed comprises a number of properties that must be reinforced for an isomorphism to take place between these two entities. In order to illustrate the approach proposed, we evaluate and extend a fragment of the UML static metamodel for the purpose of conceptual modeling, by comparing it with an excerpt of a philosophically and cognitive well-founded reference ontology.

In a series of papers [1,2,3] we have been using the General Ontological Language (GOL) and its underlying upper level ontology, proposed in [4,5], to evaluate the ontological correctness of a conceptual UML class model and to develop guidelines for how the constructs of the UML should be used in conceptual modeling. In this paper, we focus on the UML metaconcepts of classes and objects from an ontological point of view. We use a philosophically and psychologically well-founded theory of classifiers to propose a UML profile for Ontology Representation and Conceptual Modeling. Moreover, we propose a design pattern based on this profile to target a recurrent problem in role modeling discussed in the literature. Finally, we demonstrate the relevance of the tools proposed by applying them to solve recurrent problems in the practice of conceptual modeling.

In this paper, we focus on the modeling metaconcepts of classifiers and objects from an ontological point of view. We use a philosophically and psychologically well-founded theory of universals to propose a UML profile for Ontology Representation and Conceptual Modeling. The formal semantics of the proposed modeling elements is presented in a language of modal logics with quantification restricted to Sortal universals.

In a series of papers [1,2] we have been using the General Ontological Language (GOL) and its underlying foundational ontology, proposed in [3,4], to evaluate the ontological correctness of a conceptual UML class model and to develop guidelines for how the constructs of the UML should be used in conceptual modeling and ontology representation. This paper can be seen as a continuation of this work, in which we focus on analyzing the UML metaconcepts of classes, attributes, data types and associations from an ontological point of view. 1

This paper discusses the suitability of using ontologies for modeling context-aware services platforms. It addresses the directions of research we are following in the WASP (Web Architectures for Services Platforms) project. For this purpose a simple scenario is considered.

Software tools processing partially common set of data should share an understanding of what these data mean. Since ontologies have been used to express formally a shared understanding of information, we argue that they are a way towards Semantic SEEs. In this paper we discuss an ontology-based approach to tool integration and present ODE, an ontology-based SEE.

As pointed out in the pioneering work of [WSW99, EW01], an upper level ontology allows to evaluate the ontological correctness of a conceptual model and to develop guidelines how the constructs of a conceptual modeling language should be used. In this paper we adopt the General Ontological Language (GOL), proposed in [DHHS01], for this purpose. We discuss a number of issues that arise when applying the concepts of GOL to UML class diagrams as a conceptual modeling language. We also compare our ontological analysis of some parts of the UML with the one proposed in [EW01].

Software reuse has been pointed as one of the most promising technique to deal with quality and productivity problems. To support reuse, software processes have to consider two facets: developing for reuse and developing with reuse. In this paper we present an ontology-based approach for software reuse and discuss how ontologies can support several tasks of a reuse-based software process.

Nevertheless, there is still no systematic approach to support the design of such systems using tools that are common to information systems developers. In this paper, we propose an approach for deriving object frameworks from domain ontologies and then we show the application of this approach in the software process domain.
