51. Anti-tumor-promoting effects of phenylpropanoids on Epstein–Barr virus activation and two-stage mouse skin carcinogenesis

Abstract: In our joint project in the search for anti-tumor promoters from natural plant sources, we carried out a primary screening of 12 phenylpropanoids isolated from Boronia pinnata Sm. (Rutaceae) by examining their possible inhibitory effects on Epstein-Barr virus early antigen (EBV-EA) activation induced by 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate in Raji cells. All tested compounds in this study showed inhibitory activity against the EBV activation even at 1 x 10 mol ratio without any cytotoxicity. Among 12 phenylpropanoids tested, boropinal-C (1), boropinol-A (5), boropinol-C (9) and 3-(3'-methoxy-4'-prenyloxy)phenyl-1-propene (10), all having a 4'-(3-methylbut-2-enyloxy) group, a so-called prenyloxy group, showed more potent activities. Furthermore, 3-(3'-methoxy-4'-prenyloxy)phenyl-1-propene (10) also exhibited remarkable inhibitory effects on mouse skin tumor promotion in an in vivo two-stage carcinogenesis test. This investigation indicated that certain phenylpropanoids might be valuable anti-tumor promoters.

52. Intriguing kinetics for chlorine etching of the Si(100)-(2×1) surface

Abstract: The desorption kinetics of SiCl2(g) species from the Cl covered nondefective Si(100)-(2×1) surface is investigated. During temperature programmed desorption, an extremely fast SiCl2(g) desorption with the full width at half maximum of 14 K at 953 K is observed from the superheated Cl saturated Si(100). The coverage-dependent desorption kinetics of SiCl2(g) follows a second order dependence on the coverage of adsorbed Cl and on the coverage of bare Si sites. The activation barrier and preexponential factor of 197±19 kJ/mole and 5×1010±1 s−1, respectively, are obtained from the model. On the Cl-saturated Si(100) surface, an additional high energy kinetic step is necessary to initiate the SiCl2(g) desorption since there are not any bare Si sites. As soon as this process turns on, the desorption of SiCl2(g) occurs catastrophically via the low energy desorption process.

Abstract: POLARBEAR-2 (PB-2) is a cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization experiment for B-mode detection. The PB-2 receiver has a large focal plane and aperture that consists of 7588 transition edge sensor (TES) bolometers at 250 mK. The receiver consists of the optical cryostat housing reimaging lenses and infrared filters, and the detector cryostat housing TES bolometers. The large focal plane places substantial requirements on the thermal design of the optical elements at the 4K, 50K, and 300K stages. Infrared filters and lenses inside the optical cryostat are made of alumina for this purpose. We measure basic properties of alumina, such as the index of refraction, loss tangent and thermal conductivity. All results meet our requirements. We also optically characterize filters and lenses made of alumina. Finally, we perform a cooling test of the entire optical cryostat. All measured temperature values satisfy our requirements. In particular, the temperature rise between the center and edge of the alumina infrared filter at 50 K is only 2:0 ± 1:4 K. Abstract: International audience; The Simons Array is an expansion of the POLARBEAR cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization experiment currently observing from the Atacama Desert in Northern Chile. This expansion will create an array of three 3.5m telescopes each coupled to a multichroic bolometric receiver. The Simons Array will have the sensitivity to produce a ≥ 5σ detection of inationary gravitational waves with a tensor-to-scalar ratio r ≥ 0:01, detect the known minimum 58 meV sum of the neutrino masses with 3σ confidence when combined with a next-generation baryon acoustic oscillation measurement, and make a lensing map of large-scale structure over the 80% of the sky available from its Chilean site. These goals require high sensitivity and the ability to extract the CMB signal from contaminating astrophysical foregrounds; these requirements are met by coupling the three high-throughput telescopes to novel multichroic lenslet-coupled pixels each measuring CMB photons in both linear polarization states over multiple spectral bands. We present the status of this instrument already under construction, and an analysis of its capabilities.

Abstract: New mounting methods for a silicon crystal and a thermocouple are described. The sample mounted using this design exhibited a very uniform temperature distribution when resistively heated. Deviations between the silicon temperature and the mounted thermocouple temperature have been measured. Metal contamination on the surface of the sample mounted with a thermocouple by the new method was found to be below the detection limit of Auger electron spectroscopy. In addition, the emissivity data at 0.65 μm for silicon as a function of temperature has been fitted to a useful equation.

56. Behaviorally significant immobile state of so-called thanatosis in the cricket Gryllus bimaculatus DeGeer: its characterization, sensory mechanism and function

Abstract: We have found that the cricket Gryllus bimaculatus shows an immobile posture, so-called thanatosis. Thanatosis was reflexly elicited by gently holding the forelegs and pronotum of the cricket. During thanatosis, the respiration rate decreased markedly while the heart rate doubled compared with the resting state. Animals in the state of extreme rigidity were unresponsive to the external disturbances but easily aroused by mechanical stimulation such as prodding. The immobile posture usually persisted for 2–4 min, but occasionally for more than 20 min, and then suddenly ended. Catalepsy was induced during thanatosis when a leg was passively forced to the extended position. For elicitation of the flexion reflex, either campaniform sensilla and femoral chordotonal organs (FCOs) in the forelegs, and spine-like sensilla on the pronotum were necessary. Among these receptors, however, only the FCOs were involved in inducing the immobile state. Centrally, the brain was indispensable for thanatosis to be maintained. In semi-natural conditions the thanatotic state did occur spontaneously while the cricket struggled to get into a small crevice according to the nature of this species. This sudden immobilization could help the cricket get out of danger of predators like reptiles and amphibians in the natural habitat.

57. Misfit stress relaxation mechanism in CdTe(100) and CdTe/ZnTe(100) on a GaAs(100) highly mismatched heteroepitaxial layer

Abstract: We studied the misfit stress in CdTe(100)/GaAs(100). In general, this highly mismatched system initially forms a ‘‘coincidence interface,’’ where seven CdTe lattices match with eight GaAs lattices. In this system, the epilayer is elastically strained by the mismatch remaining between both groups of lattices. Afterward, the misfit stress is gradually relaxed with the generation of misfit dislocations. In this work, we derived a new model to describe this misfit relaxation mechanism and verified it with experimental observations. As introducing the effects of the interface modification, we found that the simple force balance between the substrate and epilayer governed the misfit stress. We assume that the relaxation process during growth is similar to that in CdTe/CdZnTe, since the residual misfit was fairly small. By extending the stress relaxation model of CdTe/GaAs, it is possible to explain the strain in CdTe/ZnTe/GaAs, which contains two highly mismatched interfaces. The threading dislocations in HgCdTe, derived from the CdTe buffer, decreased with increasing CdTe thickness. Assuming that the misfit dislocations are generated by bending threading dislocations, we could explain the dislocation reduction by utilizing the above misfit stress relaxation model. In spite of the extremely large mismatch, the structural quality of CdTe(100)/GaAs(100) was improved due to the relatively small strain remaining in the coincidence interface.

Abstract: We demonstrate the enhancement of electroluminescence (EL) from blends of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) in poly(2-methoxy-5-(2′-ethylhexoxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene) (MEH-PPV). The external EL quantum efficiency η of Ca/P3HT:MEH-PPV/ITO diodes initially increases with P3HT content and goes through a maximum at η = 1.7% photons/electron with only 1 wt.% P3HT; greater than in Ca/MEH-PPV/ITO by a factor of two to three and greater than in Ca/P3HT/ITO by more than three orders of magnitude. At 4 V forward bias, these devices emit signal-red light with brightness of about 220 cd/m2.

Abstract: Electroluminescence (EL) is reported from blends of head-to-tail poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK); light-violet color emission is observed (a mixture of blue and red). Since P3HT and PVK are soluble in common organic solvents, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) can be fabricated by spin-casting films of the polymer blends from solution without subsequent processing or heat treatment. Calcium and indium-tin oxide (ITO) were used as the electron-injection and hole-injection electrodes, respectively. The EL quantum efficiency was enhanced by blending, with an optimized value of 0.2% photons/electron in blend films with about 2 wt.% P3HT; i.e. greater than in pure PVK by approximately a factor of four and greater than in pure P3HT by more than two orders of magnitude.

Abstract: Polymorphisms are distributed differently in populations, including those of regions, ethnic groups, and diseased patients. In order to investigate variation in nucleotide sequences in normal individuals, we isolated genomic DNA from the blood of healthy Japanese individuals and sequenced the 5'-untranslated region (5'-UTR) of the phosphatase and tensin homolog deleted on chromosome 10 (PTEN) gene and the gene promoter, intron, and exon nucleotides of p53, p14(ARF), murine double minute 2 (MDM2), and the beta2- and beta3-adrenoceptor (-AR). We found polymorphisms in these regions, including a deletion at positions -465 to -463 and a substitution at position -404 in PTEN and a substitution at position -4924 in p14(ARF), in normal individuals. Individuals with or without the PTEN polymorphism harbored a different distribution of polymorphisms, including simultaneous alterations in nucleotides of p53, MDM2, and beta3-AR, and also harbored some polymorphic nucleotides located in the same set of associatively altered nucleotides. Our results show that multiple nucleotides, including the PTEN nucleotides, are altered in normal Japanese individuals and provide useful information for genotyping studies in individuals and populations.

Abstract: Searches for a nucleon decay into a charged anti-lepton (e^+ or {\mu}^+) plus a light meson ({\pi}^0, {\pi}^-, {\eta}, {\rho}^0, {\rho}^-, {\omega}) were performed using the Super-Kamiokande I and II data. Twelve nucleon decay modes were searched for. The total exposure is 140.9 kiloton \cdot years, which includes a 91.7 kiloton \cdot year exposure (1489.2 live days) of Super-Kamiokande-I and a 49.2 kiloton \cdot year exposure (798.6 live days) of Super-Kamiokande-II. The number of candidate events in the data was consistent with the atmospheric neutrino background expectation. No significant evidence for a nucleon decay was observed in the data. Thus, lower limits on the nucleon partial lifetime at 90% confidence level were obtained. The limits range from 3.6 \times 10^31 to 8.2 \times 10^33 years, depending on the decay modes., Comment: 25 pages, 18 figures

Abstract: We report a measurement of muon-neutrino disappearance in the T2K experiment. The 295-km muon-neutrino beam from Tokai to Kamioka is the first implementation of the off-axis technique in a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. With data corresponding to 1.43 × 10(20) protons on target, we observe 31 fully-contained single μ-like ring events in Super-Kamiokande, compared with an expectation of 104 ± 14(syst) events without neutrino oscillations. The best-fit point for two-flavor νμ → ντ oscillations is sin 2(2θ(23)) = 0.98 and |Δm(2)(32)| = 2.65 × 10(−3) eV2. Abstract: Effects of 2-buten-4-olide (2-B4O), an endogenous satiety substance, on levels of plasma glucose, corticosterone, and catecholamines were examined in fed, conscious, and unrestrained rats. A vascular indwelling catheter was inserted into the right atrium of the animal from the jugular vein 1 wk before the experiment. Injection of 2-B4O and blood sampling were performed through the catheter in an unanesthetized condition. The levels of plasma glucose, corticosterone, epinephrine, and norepinephrine increased significantly for 2 h after the start of intravenous injection of 2-B4O in a dose-dependent manner. The increases in glucose and catecholamines induced by 2-B4O injection were abolished by bilateral splanchnicotomy (SPX) but not by pretreatment with anti-corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) antibody. The increase in corticosterone was abolished not by the SPX but by pretreatment with anti-CRF antibody. These findings suggest that 2-B4O, endogenously produced during food deprivation, may facilitate sympathoadrenal and hypothalamopituitary-adrenal functions through the central nervous system.

Abstract: In this paper we study non-standard neutrino interactions as an example of physics beyond the standard model using atmospheric neutrino data collected during the Super-Kamiokande I(1996-2001) and II(2003-2005) periods. We focus on flavor-changing-neutral-currents (FCNC), which allow neutrino flavor transitions via neutral current interactions, and effects which violate lepton non-universality (NU) and give rise to different neutral-current interaction-amplitudes for different neutrino flavors. With improved detector calibrations, a full detector simulation, and improved analysis methods, the systematic uncertainty on the total neutrino flux is estimated to be ± 2.1%, which is about two thirds of the systematic uncertainty for the first phase of Super-Kamiokande. The observed 8B solar flux in the 5.0 to 20 MeV total electron energy region is 2.32 ± 0.04 (stat.) ± 0.05 (sys.) x 10^6 cm^-2sec^-1, under the assumption of pure electron-flavor content, in agreement with previous measurements. A combined oscillation analysis is carried out using SK-I, II, and III data, and the results are also combined with the results of other solar neutrino experiments. The best-fit oscillation parameters are obtained to be sin^2 {\theta}12 = 0.30+0.02-0.01(tan^2 {\theta}12 = 0.42+0.04 -0.02) and {\Delta}m2_21 = 6.2+1.1-1.9 *10^-5eV^2. Combined with KamLAND results, the best-fit oscillation parameters are found to be sin^2 {\theta}12 = 0.31±0.01 (tan^2 {\theta}12 = 0.44±0.03) and {\Delta}m2_21 = 7.6 ± 0.2 x 10^-5 eV^2. The 8B neutrino flux obtained from global solar neutrino experiments is 5.3 ± 0.2 (stat + sys) x 10^6cm^-2s^-1, while the 8B flux becomes 5.1 ± 0.1 (stat +sys ) x 10^6cm^-2s^-1 by adding KamLAND result. In a three-flavor analysis combining all solar neutrino experiments, the upper limit of sin^2 {\theta}13 is 0.060 at 95% C.L.. After combination with KamLAND results, the upper limit of sin^2 {\theta}13 is found to be 0.059 at 95% C.L., The authors gratefully acknowledge the cooperation of the Kamioka Mining and Smelting Company. Abstract: The T2K experiment is a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. Its main goal is to measure the last unknown lepton sector mixing angle {\theta}_{13} by observing {\nu}_e appearance in a {\nu}_{\mu} beam. It also aims to make a precision measurement of the known oscillation parameters, {\Delta}m^{2}_{23} and sin^{2} 2{\theta}_{23}, via {\nu}_{\mu} disappearance studies. Other goals of the experiment include various neutrino cross section measurements and sterile neutrino searches. The experiment uses an intense proton beam generated by the J-PARC accelerator in Tokai, Japan, and is composed of a neutrino beamline, a near detector complex (ND280), and a far detector (Super-Kamiokande) located 295 km away from J-PARC. Abstract: We show that $~N=1$~ {\it supersymmetric} Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (SKP) equations can be embedded into recently formulated $~N=1$~ self-dual {\it supersymmetric} Yang-Mills theories after appropriate dimensional reduction and truncation, which yield three-dimensional supersymmetric Chern-Simons theories. Based on this result, we also give conjectural \hbox{$N=2~$} SKP equations. Abstract: We calculate the unstrained and the strained band structures of InAs and InSb by means of the empirical pseudopotential method. The impact ionization threshold energy, E th , is calculated while keeping the energy and momentum conservation. Then the electron transport in the unstrained and the strained InAs and InSb is investigated by using the Monte Carlo (MC) method. In both InAs and InSb, the average electron velocity, v d , increases monotonically with the electric field strength, f. The tensile strain makes the low field electron mobility, μ, higher, and vice versa, which is resulted from the dependence of the effective mass in the Γ valley, m || ∗(Γ), on the strain. At the high f, many electrons are restricted within the bottom of the Γ valley because of losing most of their energy by the impact ionization, which results in keeping v d large at the high f. The tensile strain makes E th smaller and then the impact ionization coefficient, α, larger, and vice versa. Consequently, v d at the high f becomes larger under the tensile strain and smaller under the compressive strain.

Abstract: We present a search for non-zero theta_{13} and deviations of sin^2 theta_{23} from 0.5 in the oscillations of atmospheric neutrino data from Super-Kamiokande -I, -II, and -III. No distortions of the neutrino flux consistent with non-zero theta_{13} are found and both neutrino mass hierarchy hypotheses are in agreement with the data. The data are best fit at Delta m^2 = 2.1 x 10^-3 eV^2, sin^2 theta_{13} = 0.0, and sin^2 theta_{23} =0.5. In the normal (inverted) hierarchy theta_{13} and Delta m^2 are constrained at the one-dimensional 90% C.L. to sin^2 theta_{13} < 0.04 (0.09) and 1.9 (1.7) x 10^-3 < Delta m^2 < 2.6 (2.7) x 10^-3 eV^2. Abstract: We report the development of a proton identification method for the Super-Kamiokande detector. This new tool is applied to the search for events with a single proton track, a high purity neutral current sample of interest for sterile neutrino searches. After selection using a neural network, we observe 38 events in the combined SK-I and SK-II data corresponding to 2285.1 days of exposure, with an estimated signal to background ratio of 1.6 to 1. Proton identification was also applied to a direct search for charged-current quasi-elastic (CCQE) events, obtaining a high precision sample of fully kinematically reconstructed atmospheric neutrinos, which has not been previously reported in water Cherenkov detectors. The CCQE fraction of this sample is 55%, and its neutrino (as opposed to anti-neutrino) fraction is 91.7+/-3%. We selected 78 mu-like and 47 e-like events in the SK-I and SK-II data set. With this data, a clear zenith angle distortion of the neutrino direction itself is reported in a sub-GeV sample of muon neutrinos where the lepton angular correlation to the incoming neutrino is weak. Our fit to nu_mu->nu_tau oscillations using the neutrino L/E distribution of the CCQE sample alone yields a wide acceptance region compatible with our previous results and excludes the no-oscillation hypothesis at 3 sigma., Comment: 23 pages, 22 figures. Abstract: The Super-Kamiokande detector is a ring imaging Cherenkov detector for neutrino physics and proton-decay search and consists of 50 000 tons of pure water equipped with about 13 000 photo-multipliers. The old front-end electronics and online system running for more than one decade were all upgraded in September, 2008 and the data acquisition was started successfully. The new front-end electronics is based on a charge to time converter and a multi-hit Time to Digital converter. TCP/IP based readout channel is implemented to handle large amounts of data. In the new data acquisition scheme, the hardware event-trigger for the data reduction is replaced by processing all the hits in the online farm, so that we are able to lower the threshold of the detection energy for solar neutrino and analyze consecutive events whose time interval is too long to detect in the previous system. To make the new online system to be capable of processing larger dataflow of up to 470 MB/s, we utilize Gigabit and 10-Gigabit Ethernet technologies and distribute the load over Linux PCs to handle a large amount of data. In this paper, we will describe the design and performance of the new system in the commissioning.

Abstract: We have searched for proton decays via p-->e;{+}pi;{0} and p-->micro;{+}pi;{0} using data from a 91.7 kt.yr exposure of Super-Kamiokande-I and a 49.2 kt.yr exposure of Super-Kamiokande-II. No candidate events were observed with expected backgrounds induced by atmospheric neutrinos of 0.3 events for each decay mode. From these results, we set lower limits on the partial lifetime of 8.2 x 10;{33} and 6.6 x 10;{33} years at 90% confidence level for p-->e;{+}pi;{0} and p-->micro;{+}pi;{0} modes, respectively.

Abstract: We show that in (anomalous) $U(1)$ gauge theories with the Fayet-Iliopoulos term and with generic interactions, there are metastable vacua in which supersymmetry (SUSY) is spontaneously broken even without $U(1{)}_{R}$ symmetry. In this vacua, various hierarchical structures such as Yukawa hierarchy can be explained by the smallness of the Fayet-Iliopoulos parameter. It is shown that, by adding just one positively charged field to phenomenologically viable models, spontaneous SUSY breaking is realized. Moreover, we propose a new scenario for the stabilization of the moduli in the SUSY breaking models. It is a new feature that the moduli can be stabilized without the superpotential being dependent on them.

Abstract: We have searched for proton decays via p--e;{+}pi;{0} and p--micro;{+}pi;{0} using data from a 91.7 kt.yr exposure of Super-Kamiokande-I and a 49.2 kt.yr exposure of Super-Kamiokande-II. No candidate events were observed with expected backgrounds induced by atmospheric neutrinos of 0.3 events for each decay mode. From these results, we set lower limits on the partial lifetime of 8.2 x 10;{33} and 6.6 x 10;{33} years at 90% confidence level for p--e;{+}pi;{0} and p--micro;{+}pi;{0} modes, respectively.

Abstract: The spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) to be launched on the Japanese Earth Resources Satellite-1 is described. The SAR is operated in the L-band. The mission is mainly dedicated to geological applications. The ground resolution of the processed image is designed as 18 m and the off-nadir angle required to meet geological applications is 35 degrees . The design and performance of the key system parameters are discussed, along with the reasons for choosing such design parameters. The antenna is a thin-flat-foldable configuration that has a 11.9-m by 2.2-m aperture when extended in orbit. The transmitter, receiver, and signal processor are all of the solid-state type to achieve high reliability of operation. They transmit an 1100-W peak (minimum) chirp pulse and receive the return echos and process the echo signals into in-phase and quadrature data streams. >

Abstract: A coincidence allows the sigma -model which describes a four-dimensional heterotic string propagating in a background of fields with spins Os2, to be coupled to all of the bosonic fields of a D=4, N=8 supergravity theory. This requires a special form of N=8 supergravity with fields forming representations of Spin(6). The usual SU(8) formulation cannot be coupled as a background to a four-dimensional type-II Green-Schwarz action or the heterotic sigma -model.

Abstract: This paper proposes a genetic algorithm for solving a unit commitment problem of electric generators, which formally is a mixed integer nonlinear programming problem. The proposed algorithm finds the optimal ON/OFF status of units by a combination of genetic algorithm and continuous relaxation method. In the proposed algorithm, a chromosome encodes a partial solution, in which the values of some variables are unfixed. The fitness of an individual is evaluated based upon a solution of the problem where all unfixed variables in the chromosome are relaxed to be continuous. Numerical experiments show the satisfactory performance of the proposed algorithm with respect to the solution quality for planning the actual unit commitment schedule.

Abstract: The results of the second phase of the Super-Kamiokande solar neutrino measurement are presented and compared to the first phase. The solar neutrino flux spectrum and time variation as well as oscillation results are statistically consistent with the first phase and do not show spectral distortion. The time-dependent flux measurement of the combined first and second phases coincides with the full period of solar cycle 23 and shows no correlation with solar activity. The measured {sup 8}B total flux is (2.38{+-}0.05(stat.){sub -0.15}{sup +0.16}(sys.))x10{sup 6} cm{sup -2} s{sup -1} and the day-night difference is found to be (-6.3{+-}4.2(stat.){+-}3.7(sys.))%. There is no evidence of systematic tendencies between the first and second phases.

Abstract: We consider muon neutrino to tau neutrino oscillations in the context of the Mass Varying Neutrino (MaVaN) model, where the neutrino mass can vary depending on the electron density along the flight path of the neutrino. Our analysis assumes a mechanism with dependence only upon the electron density, hence ordinary matter density, of the medium through which the neutrino travels. Fully-contained, partially-contained and upward-going muon atmospheric neutrino data from the Super--Kamiokande detector, taken from the entire SK--I period of 1489 live days, are compared to MaVaN model predictions. We find that, for the case of 2-flavor oscillations, and for the specific models tested, oscillation independent of electron density is favored over density dependence. Assuming maximal mixing, the best-fit case and the density-independent case do not differ significantly., Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure

Abstract: A first study of neutron tagging is conducted in Super--Kamiokande, a 50,000-ton water Cherenkov detector. The tagging efficiencies of thermal neutrons are evaluated in a 0.2 % GdCl$_{3}$-water solution and pure water. They are determined to be, respectively, 66.7 % for events above 3 MeV and 20 % with corresponding background probabilities of 2 $\times$ 10$^{-4}$ and 3 $\times$ 10$^{-2}$. This newly developed technique may enable water Cherenkov detectors to identify $\bar \nu_{e}$'s geological or astrophysical sources as well as those produced by commercial reactors via the delayed coincidence scheme., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures

Abstract: Ligand substitution of chromyl chloride with the chelating dilithium perfluoropinacolate Li2(PFP) does not afford the desired chromyl perfluoropinacolate O2Cr(PFP) as previously reported. Instead a facile reductive di-substitution of O2CrCl2 occurs to yield bis(perfluoropinacolato)oxochromate(V), OCr (PFP)2−, and its structure is established as the pyridinium-pyridine salt II by X-ray crystallography. The selective hydrolysis of II affords an unusual binuclear bis-μ-oxochromate(V) salt V, the X-ray crystal structure of which consists of unique chains of binuclear chromium(V) dianions [OCr(PFP)-μ-O]22− that are linked by aquo-lithium ion bridges. The relationship of these unusually stable oxochromate(V) salts to the previously reported simple alkali salts of OCr(PFP)2− and potassium bis(2-hydroxy-2-methyl- butyrato)oxochromate(V) is discussed.

By high speed signal processing electronics, we will record all the hits of all the PMTs without any hardware filtering, aiming observations of much fainter signals of the supernova relic neutrinos, lower energy (~ 3 MeV) solar neutrinos, neutrino burst from nearby galactic supernova, and so on. The energy resolutions of multi-GeV atmospheric neutrino events will also be improved by the electronics. The new front-end electronics is based on charge to time converters (QTCs) and multi-hit TDCs. TCP/IP based readout channel is implemented to handle large amounts of data. We have developed a custom ASIC QTC and evaluated the characteristics of the chip and the prototypical board; high-speed (1 MHz cycle), high sensitivity for single photo- electron signal, good charge (0.1 pC RMS) and timing (0.3 ns RMS) responses, and wide charge dynamic range (2500 pC). In this paper, the design and the performance of the front-end board are described.

We investigated whether multi-drug resistance-1 (ABCB1) C3435T, reduced folate carrier-1 (RFC1) G80A, 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide ribonucleotide transformylase (ATIC) C347G and a 6bp-deletion polymorphism in the 3'-untranslated region of the thymidylase synthase (TYMS) gene are predictive of MTX sensitivity and its adverse effects.Patients whose last maintenance dosage of MTX wasor= 6 mg/week were regarded as responders, while patients whose last maintenance dosage of MTX was6 mg/week or those in whom MTX therapy was changed due to poor response to MTX were regarded as non-responders. The data of 124 RA patients who had received MTX treatment were retrospectively analyzed for polymorphisms in the ABCB1, RFC1, ATIC and TYMS genes, MTX sensitivity and MTX toxicity.There were no significant differences in MTX sensitivity among the genotypes of RFC1, ATIC and TYMS genes. ABCB1 3435TT cases included statistically significantly more non-responders than 3435CC cases according to univariate analysis (crude odds ratio (OR) = 8.91, p = 0.001) and multivariate analysis (adjusted OR = 8.78, p = 0.038). There were no significant differences in MTX toxicity among the genotypes of all the genes.These results suggested that the genetic diagnosis of ABCB1 C3435T can be applied to determine MTX sensitivity for the treatment of RA patients. However, further pharmacokinetics studies are required in this regard.

Abstract: A search for Q-balls induced groups of successive contained events has been carried out in Super-Kamiokande II with 541.7 days of live time. Neutral Q-balls would emit pions when colliding with nuclei, generating a signal of successive contained pion events along a track. Abstract: A search for the appearance of tau neutrinos from \mutau oscillations in the atmospheric neutrinos has been performed using 1489.2 days of atmospheric neutrino data from the Super-Kamiokande-I experiment. A best fit tau neutrino appearance signal of 138 $\pm$ 48 (stat.) $^{+15}_{-32}$ (sys.) events is obtained with an expectation of 78 $\pm$ 26 (sys.). Abstract: We report on the results of a three-flavor oscillation analysis using Super-Kamiokande~I atmospheric neutrino data, with the assumption of one mass scale dominance ($\Delta m_{12}^2$$=$0). No significant flux change due to matter effect, which occurs when neutrinos propagate inside the Earth for $\theta_{13}$$\neq$0, has been seen either in a multi-GeV $\nu_e$-rich sample or in a $\nu_\mu$-rich sample. Both normal and inverted mass hierarchy hypotheses are tested and both are consistent with observation. Using Super-Kamiokande data only, 2-dimensional 90 % confidence allowed regions are obtained: mixing angles are constrained to $\sin^2\theta_{13} < 0.14$ and $0.37 < \sin^2\theta_{23} < 0.65$ for the normal mass hierarchy. Weaker constraints, $\sin^2\theta_{13} < 0.27$ and $0.37 < \sin^2\theta_{23} < 0.69$, are obtained for the inverted mass hierarchy case., Comment: 7 figures, 3 tables

Abstract: From three-dimensional linearized hydrodynamic equations, it is found that the heat conductivity is proportional to $(L_x/(L_y^2 L_z^2))^{1/3}$, where $L_x$, $L_y$ and $L_z$ are the lengths of the system along the $x$, $y$ and $z$ directions, and we consider the case in which $L_x \gg L_y, L_z$. The necessary condition for such a size dependence is derived as $\phi \equiv L_x/(n^{1/2} L_y^{5/4} L_z^{5/4}) \gg 1$, where $\phi$ is the critical condition parameter and $n$ is the number density. Abstract: To improve the sensitivity of the Super-Kamiokande detector for elementary particle and astroparticle physics, new data acquisition electronics are under development. For a new front-end electronics development, charge-to-time converter (QTC) has been developed as a custom application specified integrated circuit (ASIC). To record all the data continuously to search for much fainter events, the new front-end electronics will be faster and dead-time less and also improve the quality of data. The design of the front-end electronics and the QTC chip and their performances are shown.

Abstract: The relative sidereal variation in the arrival direction of primary cosmic ray nuclei of median energy 10 TeV was measured using downward, through-going muons detected with the Super-Kamiokande-I detector. The projection of the anisotropy map onto the right ascension axis has a first harmonic amplitude of $(6.64 \pm 0.98 {stat.} \pm 0.55 {syst.}) \times 10^{-4}$ and a phase at maximum at $(33.2^\circ \pm 8.2^\circ {stat.} \pm 5.1^\circ {syst.})$ right ascension. A sky map in equatorial coordinates indicates an excess region in the constellation of Taurus and a deficit region toward Virgo. The excess region is centered at $(\alpha_T, \delta_T) = (75^\circ \pm 7^\circ, -5^\circ \pm 9^\circ)$ with a half opening angle $\chi_T = (39 \pm 7)^\circ$; the excess flux is ($0.104 \pm 0.020$)% above the isotropic expectation. The corresponding parameters for the deficit region are $(\alpha_V, \delta_V) = (205^\circ \pm 7^\circ, 5^\circ \pm 10^\circ)$, $\chi_V = (54 \pm 7)^\circ$, and $(-0.094 \pm 0.014)$%. The data do not allow us to rule out a pure dipole form for the anisotropy (allowed at 13% confidence level); they are better described by the excess and deficit cones described above. Abstract: The cortical representation of micturition is speculated to reside in the medial frontal lobes.1,2 Lesion pathology, however, varies from acute stroke to a neoplasm, and there is not necessarily a small, distinct lesion.2 We report a case of urinary retention in which the main presenting symptom is thought to have been caused by a small cortical infarction. One morning, a 66 year old, right handed man had difficulty urinating. He had no history of voiding difficulty, diabetes mellitus, injury to the lower urinary tract, or neurological disease. Digital rectal examination and ultrasonography of the prostate detected no enlargement. Urinalysis showed no haematuria or pyuria. He was not taking any medications that cause voiding dysfunction. There was no urinary incontinence, but he had difficulty in voiding even though he felt the bladder was full. At that time, he also had difficulty in lifting his left arm and leg and so was brought to our hospital. Neurological examination in the emergency room found no weakness, and he was sent home.
