There are 127 basic composition objectives in this revised collection for use in kindergarten through high school. At least one evaluation per objective is given. The objectives are organized as follows: (1) Story Writing which covers fanciful and realistic types such as: myths, fable, short story, fiction, and writing dialogue; (2) Letters both social and business; (3) Figurative and Descriptive Language such as: personification, metaphor, simile, alliteration, and onomatopeia; (4) Poetry Skills such as recognition of metrical patterns, and rhyme schemes; (5) Poetry Writing such as: narrative, lyric, haiku, ballad, sonnet, and cinquain. Paragraph Form Development objectives are as follows: (1) Expository, topic sentence, direct and indirect sentence links; (2) General Expository methods on how and when to write paragraphs; (3) Narrative development, chronology, and summarized and dramatized narrative; (4) Descriptive development; (5) Discursive Development, inductive and deductive organization; (6) Generative development defining a paragraph as a sequence of structural related sentences. The essays in this volume deal with the relationship of the computer and the arts, especially the exploration and demonstration of connections between creativity and technology, the links between scientific or mathematical approaches, intuitions, and the more irrational and oblique urges associated with the making of music, art, and poetry. The essays, which range from Jonathan Swift's description of a "word machine" for giving the world "a complete body of all arts and sciences" to a "computerized Haiku," are composed of fiction, speculation, science fiction, aesthetic theories, sociological deductions, reports of experiments made with cybernetic environments, reports on computer-composed music, computer-generated art and texts, as well as explanations of how computers work and their role in our society. This annotated bibliography of articles and books about haiku is divided into English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French, and German language references. The organization of each section progresses from references for Japanese haiku to references for haiku written in occidental languages and from books to periodical publications. Because of their importance, basic references to the four great Japanese haiku poets (Basho, Buson, Issa, and Shiki) are separated from general entries. The author states that this bibliography reflects the popularity (and problems) of a new poetic form from another cultural tradition during the period of its assimilation into the cultural system and literary expression of the West. Various approaches to teaching creative writing to children are described. The book contains many examples of children's writing and stresses the need to listen to the child, to praise, to make suggestions gently, and to encourage the child to use his own senses for firsthand impressions and to say what he truly feels. Some of the chapters discuss the tools of creative writing, the voice of the poem, form versus no form, the uses and misuses of the collective poem, when it is time for form and disciplines, and how and when of metaphors and similes, rhymes, haiku, tragedy and comedy, reaching the non-writer, ideas for writing, individuality of expression, the sharing of poetry, distinguishing between good and bad poetry, and ways in which children are able to find for themselves where a piece of writing falls apart. Haiku is a Japanese poem that deals with nature and contains seventeen syllables divided among three lines in the pattern of 5-7-5. Senryu is also a disciplined Japanese poem which deals directly with people and ideas. In Haiku, the reader utilizes imagination; in senryu, the interpretation has been supplied.
