Abstract

An average of 0.9 tonne of CO2 is released for each tonne of clinker produced worldwide. Around 0.5 tonne of CO2 originates from the decarbonation of limestone, and on aggregate are considered to be the largest non-combustion source of CO2 emissions from industrial production. The remaining CO2 releases are mainly due to the fuel combusted during manufacturing of clinker and in the corresponding supply chains. In light of the scale and urgency of climate change, development of environmentally less damaging cements as well as improvements in concrete production have been explored by many researchers. While upgrading current plants with new technologies is costly and has already been done in most countries, the use of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) has shown to be the most cost-effective approach to reducing emissions from cement manufacturing. However, slag and fly ash, the two most used SCMs of suitable quality for clinker replacement, are concentrated in regions where coal power plants and steel plants are located, and the transition to cleaner and more efficient technologies for energy generation and steel manufacturing are limiting their use as a long-term solution. For this reason, there is a vital need to find readily available alternative materials for widespread use as partial replacement of clinker.In this dissertation, the use of metakaolin (calcined clay) coupled with limestone as SCMs for partial replacement of clinker in cement is explored. Both their mechanical performance in mortar and concrete mixtures and their effects in reducing cement’s and concrete’s environmental burden are the main foci of this thesis. The importance of calculating the environmental impact of concrete binder made of cement, limestone, and metakaolin would allow us to understand their performance in reference to conventional concrete made of portland cement and commercially available Pozzolan-Portland-Cement concretes. 81. Life-Cycle Approach to Healthy Airport Terminal Buildings: Spatial-Temporal Analysis of Mitigation Strategies for Addressing the Pollutants that Affect Climate Change and Human Health

Abstract

The potential environmental and human health impacts associated with constructing and operating terminal buildings is explored for commercial airports in the United States. Research objectives are to quantify: (1) baseline and mitigated greenhouse gas (GHG) and criteria air pollutant (CAP) emissions; (2) operational costs; and (3) climate change damages from terminal building construction and materials, operational energy consumption, water consumption and wastewater generation, and solid waste generation. An Excel-based decision-support tool, Airport Terminal Environmental Support Tool (ATEST), has been created to allow stakeholders to conduct preliminary assessments of current baseline and potential mitigated impacts. Emissions are quantified using a life-cycle approach that accounts for cradle-to-grave effects. Climate change and human health indicators are characterized using EPA’s Tool for Reduction and Assessment of Chemical Impact (TRACI) factors. ATEST is applied to multiple case study airports— Reno/Tahoe International (RNO), Pittsburgh International (PIT), Newark Liberty International (EWR), Seattle-Tacoma International (SEA), San Francisco International (SFO), and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International (ATL)—to demonstrate its scalability and capability to assess varying spatial factors. Across all airports, electricity mix and construction are significant in determining GHG and CAP emissions, respectively. A sensitivity analysis of GHG emissions for the SFO case study reveals that the electricity mix, amount of electricity consumed within the terminal, terminal gross area, and amount of compostables in the solid waste stream have the most impact on increasing annual GHG emissions. ATEST represents a crucial first step in helping stakeholders to make decisions that will lead to healthier, more sustainable airport terminals.

Abstract

Environmental awareness is increasingly important to society, government, and industry, and there is a strong demand for sustainable development practices. The importance of supply chain management is critical, as it characterizes and influences the life cycles of all products. Within the major logistics trends, outsourcing has a significant potential to increase sustainability in the supply chain as third-party logistics providers (3PLs) focus on improving resource utilization and making processes more efficient. However, their motivation is largely economic, and an environmental perspective is rarely seen in 3PLs. As consumers demand greener alternatives and, subsequently, environmental regulatory measures are implemented, 3PLs will have to become more environmentally and socially aware in order to develop sustainability goals. This study compares two scenarios using life-cycle assessment (LCA): one where logistics functions are handled in-house, and an alternative scenario where such functions are outsourced to a 3PL. The impacts of logistics outsourcing on energy utilization, global warming potential, and fatalities are first quantified in the supply chain of an automobile. Even though vehicle operation, responsible for most of the impacts considered, is outside the domain of logistics functions, logistics outsourcing nonetheless has the potential to reduce energy use and global warming potential by 0.4-2% and fatalities by 0.8-3.3% throughout the entire life cycle of a typical automobile. Road and air transportation are found to account for most of the impacts in all selected metrics. Analyzing logistics outsourcing in the other sectors of the U.S. economy revealed the same trend as observed in the supply chain of an automobile. Abstract

The service industry has a significant yet indirect impact on the environment in the U.S., in terms of emissions, wastes and the consumption of energy. Four representative industries were investigated to exemplify this situation, including trucking and courier services, retail trade, colleges and universities, and hotels. The environmental effects of the supply chain of these four services are what service industries need to take into consideration.
