Abstract

International audience; We observe a deuteron beam polarization lifetime near 1000 s in the horizontal plane of a magnetic storage ring (COSY). This long spin coherence time is maintained through a combination of beam bunching, electron cooling, sextupole field corrections, and the suppression of collective effects through beam current limits. This record lifetime is required for a storage ring search for an intrinsic electric dipole moment on the deuteron at a statistical sensitivity level approaching 10−29 e cm.

Abstract

Due to their reciprocal nature, passive antennas can be completely characterized in transmit or receive mode. This is in contrast with active antennas where characterization is performed in one of two modes, with the other deemed not suitable due to non-reciprocity. This requires an antenna measurement facility be able to perform measurements in both transmit and receive modes. This article describes a measurement setup used to characterize an active radar module (ARM) in transmit mode and presents the results of these measurements, which were performed in the compact antenna test range at the Institute of High-Frequency Technology at the University of Aachen (RWTH), Aachen, Germany.

Abstract

The RF coil is an essential part of MRI systems. In ultra-high field (UHF) MRI, the design of RF coils is a challenging task. The RF coil should resonate at a particular frequency (the Larmor Frequency) and must provide a highly homogeneous B1+ field as well. It must be safe to use by maintaining a low specific absorption rate (SAR) value. Homogeneity of the B1+ is a supremely important factor in MRI systems. A homogenous B1+ allows the spin in different mediums having different electromagnetic properties to see the same B1+ field value. When the field-tissue interaction takes place, the spin interacts differently in a unique manner making it possible for materials to be imaged. Generally speaking, this allows higher resolutions images with high contrast increasing therefore the sensitivity of the MRI system. The specific absorption rate is a safety indicator. It is an indicator that reflects how much electromagnetic energy is absorbed in the biological tissue. SAR value must be kept as low as possible. The task of this paper is to provide a quantitative comparison between three common volume RF coils at 9.4Tesla. The comparison is held in terms of the homogeneity of the B1+ both in the loaded and unloaded cases and also as a function of the SAR. Additionally, a comparison with the performance of 7 Tesla published earlier to quantify the gain of increasing the frequency. Before comparing the coils, the coils must be built first. The S-parameter as a clue of resonance at the Larmor frequency is presented accompanied with a comparison with measurements performed. A quantitative approach to assess the interaction between the electromagnetic fields and phantoms is provided and discussed in the context of dielectric resonance. Additional visual clues are provided. A detailed statistical study of the local homogeneity/inhomogeneity is performed. Abstract

Near-field-to-far-field transformation algorithms have been developed during the last decades of the last century. Spherical near-field measurements are nowadays the most accurate technique for characterizing one antenna. However, one of the drawbacks is the requirement for a full spherical acquisition. This means a large number of scans, especially for very large antennas, requiring a long measurement time. This paper presents several techniques for performing a single-cut near-to-far-field transformation. An explanation of each algorithm, and a comparison among them for several antennas, are presented. The possibilities and limitations of the algorithms are discussed in the last section. This work was performed thanks to the mobility programs offered by the Antenna Networks in the European Union: European Association on Antennas and Propagation (EurAAP) and COST-VISTA action, allowing researchers from the three institutions to work together on this project. Abstract

A previously presented Ƹ-negative transmission line-based zeroth-order resonator antenna structure rescaled to operate at the 2.45 GHz ISM band. The antenna structure is investigated and its feeding network is minimised by using a properly located coaxial. Additionally, a design parameter capable of influencing the radiation pattern is explored. Moreover, this parameter can also reduce the size of the structure. The final antenna structure appears to be better or at least competitive to the best metamaterial-based antennas in terms of size-bandwidth performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
