Abstract

Book synopsis: This is the first volume to explore the place of photography in archaeology: the parallel histories of the two fields, their similarities and differences, and their current and future relationships. Since its earliest beginnings, photography has been innately archaeological. Its ability to freeze a moment of time gives photographic images an uncanny quality, whilst also allowing them to be a uniquely valuable recording tool. Photography has been a central element of archaeological method and practice since the late 19th century, and yet the apparent neutrality and passive objectivity of photographic images in the creation of archaeological knowledge is rarely interrogated. Meanwhile, archaeology's photographic character – the significance of the visual, of documentation, and of intervention in temporal process – remains even less explored. Digital technology has made photography both ubiquitous and ephemeral, questioning the status and authenticity of the image as material archive. Thus, despite their shared histories and present commonalities, these various intimate connections between archaeology and photography remain under-explored.\ud \ud This volume will mark a watershed in the emergence of a new generation of studies of archaeological photography, bringing together new studies of archaeological photography from leading researchers in the field, both of historical photographs in archives, and of contemporary practice. It explores the legacy of historical photography on contemporary archaeological fieldwork and image-making, and takes stock of what the vision for the future relationship between archaeology and photography might be, through seven key themes – time, materials, fieldwork, representation, documentation and the archive, and the profilmic.

We report optical neuromorphic processors based on Kerr micro-combs that are programmable, scalable and ultra-high speed. We demonstrate a perceptron at 11.9Giga-OPS at 8 bits, or 95.2 Gbps, and a convolutional accelerator at 11TeraOPs/s.

Abstract

Materials databases such as AFLOW [1] leverage ab initio calculations for autonomous materials design. The predictive power critically relies on accurate formation enthalpies - quantifying the thermodynamic stability of a system. For ionic materials such as oxides and nitrides, standard DFT leads to errors of several hundred meV/atom [2,3]. We have recently developed the "coordination corrected enthalpies" (CCE) method yielding highly accurate room temperature formation enthalpies with mean absolute errors down to 27 meV/atom [3]. Here, we introduce AFLOW-CCE [4]: a tool where users can input a structure file and receive the CCE corrections, or even the CCE formation enthalpies if pre-calculated LDA, PBE or SCAN values are provided. Abstract

The computational design of materials with ionic bonds poses a critical challenge to thermodynamic modeling since density functional theory yields inaccurate predictions of their formation enthalpies. Progress requires leveraging physically insightful correction methods. The recently introduced coordination corrected enthalpies (CCE) method delivers accurate formation enthalpies with mean absolute errors close to room temperature thermal energy, i.e., ≈25 meV/atom. The CCE scheme, depending on the number of cation-anion bonds and oxidation state of the cation, requires an automated analysis of the system to determine and apply the correction. Here, we present AFLOW-CCE—our implementation of CCE into the AFLOW framework for computational materials design. It features a command line tool, a web interface, and a Python environment. The workflow includes a structural analysis, automatically determines oxidation numbers, and accounts for temperature effects by parametrizing vibrational contributions to the formation enthalpy per bond.

Materials discovery and design critically relies on accurate enthalpies. The formation enthalpy – quantifying the thermodynamic stability of a compound – is a key quantity in ab initio materials databases such as AFLOW [1] to enable autonomous materials design. For ionic systems such as chalcogenides (e.g. oxides), pnictides (e.g. nitrides), and halides, standard semi-local DFT leads, however, to errors of several hundred meV/atom [2,3] for this quantity inhibiting materials design. To address this critical issue, we have developed the "coordination corrected enthalpies" (CCE) method yielding highly accurate room temperature formation enthalpies with mean absolute errors down to 27 meV/atom [3]. Recently, we have also introduced AFLOW-CCE [4]: an implementation of the method into the freely available AFLOW software for automated correction of DFT results. The tool returns the CCE corrections, or even the CCE formation enthalpies if pre-calculated LDA, PBE or SCAN values are provided. The autonomous implementation enables the enthalpy correction of an extensive library of materials as well as the accurate and quick generation of convex hull phase diagrams. Abstract

Science is increasingly produced in collaborative teams, but collaborative teams in science are self-assembled and uid. Such characteristics call for a network approach to account for external activities responsible for team product but taking place beyond closed team boundaries in the open network. Given such characteristics of collaborative teams in science, we empirically test the interdependence between collaborative teams in the same network. Specically, using fixed effects Poisson models and panel data of 1,310 American scientists' life-time publication histories, we demonstrate knowledge spillovers from new collaborators to other teams not involving these new collaborators.
