61. Effects of air temperature, air movement and artificial rain on the heat production of brushtail possums (Trichosurus vulpecula): An exploratory study

Abstract

Two groups of six mature brushtail possums (Trichosurus vulpecula) were housed in two respiration chambers, and their heat production, whole body conductance and lower critical temperatures were measured under a variety of simulated weather patterns. The possums were subjected to ambient temperatures of 30, 20 and 3 °C. At 20 and 3 °C, the animals were exposed to near still air and light winds (wind speed 0.8 and 6.7 km/h), both with, and without, simulated rain every 8 hours. The lower critical temperature in near still air lies between 7 and 10 °C. This temperature increases by about 2, 6 and 8 °C respectively for a wind velocity of 6.7 km/h, simulated rain and a combination of the two factors. Weather in New Zealand, especially in the cooler part of the year, will often produce conditions below the lower critical temperature of the thermoneutral zone of possums. This will necessitate significant increases in metabolic rate and hence food consumption or mobilisation of body fat reserves, which if not sustainable will result in the death of possums. Field studies have shown that this is often the case in the wild. It is proposed that this stress may be sufficient to decrease the resistance (especially cell-mediated immunity) of some possums and allow acceleration of the disease process in those infected with Mycobacterium bovis.

Abstract

This manual contains instructional material for student use in conjunction with the pilot judgment training program. It contains 18 lessons which are divided into three units. Unit I presents terms and concepts designed to develop modified patterns of thinking and to give students and instructors the most objective means possible for discussing pilot behavior. Unit II addresses behavioral aspects of judgment, including hazardous thoughts and stress. Unit III relates the learning of Units I and II to actual flight situations using scenarios based on actual pilot accident reports. This manual is intended as a training aid and workbook requiring a minimum of supplemental teaching by the flight instructor., See also Volume 3, ADA117509.

Abstract

The evaluation experiment was conducted using three groups. The experimental group received a written pretest, judgment ground and flight training, a written posttest, and an observation flight at the completion of the training. The flight control group received only the post-training observation flight. The academic control group received the written pretest and posttest along with the experimental group. The resulting data indicated statistically significant differences between the performance of experimental and control group subjects. This was true both in acquisition of judgment concepts as measured by written tests and in the skills performance as measured during the observation flights. Two limitations to the judgment program's generalizability are the relative homogenity of the subjects and the compressed nature of the training time utilized. Abstract

This manual explains how the flight instructor is to present the judgment training to the students, outlines the content of the Student Manual, presents two sets of lessons for the instructor to conduct during flight training, and contains support materials for the instructor. The Introduction discusses the instructor's role as a coach of learning and the value of using behavior modification in teaching. Units I, II, and III are teaching outlines for parallel units in the Student Manual presenting judgment concepts, behavioral aspects and applications of judgment training. Units IV and V contain instructor initiated exercises designed to develop, focus, and reinforce the student's judgment-making abilities during flight training activities. Unit VI recites basic management principles of the judgment training course, and the Appendices contain various forms and other instructional support documents. Abstract

Long-term severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infections in immunodeficient patients are an important source of variation for the virus but are understudied. Many case studies have been published which describe one or a small number of long-term infected individuals but no study has combined these sequences into a cohesive dataset. This work aims to rectify this and study the genomics of this patient group through a combination of literature searches as well as identifying new case series directly from the COVID-19 Genomics UK (COG-UK) dataset. The spike gene receptor-binding domain and N-terminal domain (NTD) were identified as mutation hotspots. Numerous mutations associated with variants of concern were observed to emerge recurrently. Additionally a mutation in the envelope gene, T30I was determined to be the second most frequent recurrently occurring mutation arising in persistent infections. A high proportion of recurrent mutations in immunodeficient individuals are associated with ACE2 affinity, immune escape, or viral packaging optimisation.There is an apparent selective pressure for mutations that aid cell–cell transmission within the host or persistence which are often different from mutations that aid inter-host transmission, although the fact that multiple recurrent de novo mutations are considered defining for variants of concern strongly indicates that this potential source of novel variants should not be discounted. © The Author(s) 2022. Abstract

The Delta (B.1.617.2) variant was the predominant UK circulating SARS-CoV-2 strain between May and December 2021. How Delta infection compares with previous variants is unknown. This prospective observational cohort study assessed symptomatic adults participating in the app-based COVID Symptom Study who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 from May 26 to July 1, 2021 (Delta overwhelmingly the predominant circulating UK variant), compared (1:1, age- and sex-matched) with individuals presenting from December 28, 2020 to May 6, 2021 (Alpha (B.1.1.7) the predominant variant). We assessed illness (symptoms, duration, presentation to hospital) during Alpha- and Delta-predominant timeframes; and transmission, reinfection, and vaccine effectiveness during the Delta-predominant period. 3581 individuals (aged 18 to 100 years) from each timeframe were assessed. The seven most frequent symptoms were common to both variants. Within the first 28 days of illness, some symptoms were more common with Delta versus Alpha infection (including fever, sore throat, and headache) and some vice versa (dyspnoea). Symptom burden in the first week was higher with Delta versus Alpha infection; however, the odds of any given symptom lasting ≥ 7 days was either lower or unchanged. Illness duration ≥ 28 days was lower with Delta versus Alpha infection, though unchanged in unvaccinated individuals. Hospitalisation for COVID-19 was unchanged. The Delta variant appeared more (1.49) transmissible than Alpha. Re-infections were low in all UK regions. Vaccination markedly reduced the risk of Delta infection (by 69-84%). We conclude that COVID-19 from Delta or Alpha infections is similar. The Delta variant is more transmissible than Alpha; however, current vaccines showed good efficacy against disease. This research framework can be useful for future comparisons with new emerging variants. © 2022, The Author(s).
