This study enhances an existing global hydrological model (GHM), Xanthos, by adding a new water management module that distinguishes between the operational characteristics of irrigation, hydropower, and flood control reservoirs. We remapped reservoirs in the GranD database to Xanthos' 0.5-degree spatial resolution so that a single lumped reservoir exists per grid cell, which yielded 3790 large reservoirs. We implemented unique operation rules for each reservoir type based on their primary purposes. In particular, hydropower reservoirs have been treated as flood control reservoirs in previous GHM studies, while here, we determined the operation rules for hydropower reservoirs via optimization that maximizes long-term hydropower production. We conducted global simulations using the enhanced Xanthos and validated monthly streamflow for 91 large river basins where high-quality observed streamflow data were available. A total of 1878 (296 hydropower, 486 irrigation, and 1096 flood control and others) out of the 3790 reservoirs are located in the 91 basins and are part of our reported results. The Kling-Gupta Efficient (KGE) value (after adding the new water management) is ≥ 0.5 and ≥ 0.0 in 39 and 81 basins, respectively. After adding the new water management module, model performance improved for 75 out of 91 basins and worsened for only seven. To measure the relative difference between explicitly representing hydropower reservoirs and representing hydropower reservoirs as flood control reservoirs (as is commonly done in other GHMs), we use normalized-root-mean-square-error (NRMSE) and the coefficient of determination (R2). Out of the 296 hydropower reservoirs, NRMSE is > 0.25 (i.e., considering 0.25 to represent a moderate difference) for over 44 % of the 296 reservoirs when comparing both the simulated reservoir releases and storage time series between the two simulations. We suggest that correctly representing hydropower reservoirs in GHMs could have important implications for our understanding and management of freshwater resource challenges at regional-to-global scales. This enhanced global water management modeling framework will allow for the analysis of future global reservoir development and management from a coupled human-earth system perspective.

The dissolution behaviors of various minerals in the tellurium–bismuth ore during oxidic–acidic leaching were investigated systematically in this work. The Te–Bi phase in the ore distributes in network shape, triangular shape, tree shape, strip shape, bulk shape, sparse granule, flake shape, crescent, etc., which are closely intercalated with FeS, FeS2, and CaCO3·(Mg,Fe,Mn)CO3. Under suitable conditions, 95.61% Te and 95.77% Bi can be recovered. Within 20 min of the initial leaching, most of dolomite and Te–Bi phase dissolve rapidly. With the extension of leaching time, a large amount of rod-shape CaSO4 particles form, attach on the surface of the tellurium–bismuth ore particles, and then grow and coarsen. The (Mg,Fe,Al)(Si,Al)Ox(OH)y phase dissolves mainly within 60 min. Fe–S phase can be corroded but cannot dissolve completely. SiO2 cannot dissolve at all. Besides, H2SO4 and Fe3+ play a significant role on the dissolution of various minerals in the ore. Without Fe3+ or H2SO4 in immersion liquid, Te and Bi are difficult to be leached into the lixivium from the tellurium–bismuth ore. As H2SO4 concentration and Fe3+ concentration increase, Te–Bi phase and Fe–Mg–Al–Si–O phase gradually dissolve, the Fe–S phase can be corroded obviously but cannot dissolve, and the Si–O phase has no change. The dissolution of dolomite is mainly controlled by H2SO4. The dissolution behaviors of various minerals in the tellurium–bismuth ore during oxidic–acidic leaching were investigated systematically. This paper provides an overview of the United States (US) Department of Energy's (DOE's) Energy Exascale Earth System Model version 2 (E3SMv2) fully coupled Regionally Refined Model (RRM) and documents the overall atmosphere, land, and river results from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 6 (CMIP6) DECK (Diagnosis, Evaluation, and Characterization of Klima) and historical simulations – a first-of-kind set of climate production simulations using RRM. The North American (NA) RRM (NARRM) is developed as the high-resolution configuration of E3SMv2 with the primary goal of more explicitly addressing DOE's mission needs regarding impacts to the US energy sector facing Earth system changes. The NARRM features finer horizontal resolution grids centered over NA, consisting of 25→100 km atmosphere and land, 0.125° river routing model, and 14→60 km ocean and sea ice. By design, the computational cost of NARRM is ∼3x of the uniform low-resolution (LR) model at 100 km but only ∼10–20 % of a globally uniform high-resolution model at 25 km. A novel hybrid timestep strategy for the atmosphere is key for NARRM to achieve improved climate simulation fidelity within the high-resolution patch without sacrificing the overall global performance. The global climate, including climatology, time series, sensitivity, and feedback, is confirmed to be largely identical between NARRM and LR as quantified with typical climate metrics. Over the refined NA area, NARRM is generally superior to LR, including for precipitation and clouds over the contiguous US (CONUS), summertime marine stratocumulus clouds off the coast of California, liquid and ice phase clouds near the North polar region, extratropical cyclones, and spatial variability in land hydrological processes. The improvements over land are related to the better resolved topography in NARRM, whereas those over ocean are attributable to the improved air-sea interactions with finer grids for both atmosphere and ocean/sea ice. Some features appear insensitive to the resolution change analyzed here, for instance the diurnal propagation of organized mesoscale convective systems over CONUS, and the warm-season land-atmosphere coupling at the Southern Great Plains. In summary, our study presents a realistically efficient approach to leverage the RRM framework for a standard Earth system model release and high-resolution climate production simulations.

Magnesium vanadates are important chemical products for luminescent materials and energy storage and also important intermediate substances during vanadium extraction, whose solubility behavior is, however, ambiguous and controversial. In this work, three common magnesium vanadates, namely, magnesium ortho-, pyro-, and metavanadate, were synthesized by a solid–solid synthesis method with MgO and V2O5 as raw materials. In optimum synthesis conditions, the obtained pure magnesium vanadates are confirmed using x-ray diffraction analysis. Then, their solubilities in water and in acidic solution in the pH range of 0–7.0 were systematically investigated at different temperatures. Results show that magnesium vanadates are readily soluble in acidic solution but are only slightly soluble in water, while in both cases magnesium metavanadate has higher solubility than orthovanadate and pyrovanadate. This work provides the fundamental data to improve understanding of the vanadium extraction mechanism and the performance control of magnesium vanadate materials.

In order to effectively improve the environmental problems caused by steel slag stacking, the air-quenching process of molten steel slag was carried out, and the properties of the air-quenched steel slag (AQSS) has been investigated by various characterization methods. The results show that the main phases of AQSS were Ca2SiO4, RO phase (solid solution formed by MgO, FeO, and MnO) and Ca2Fe2O5. The AQSS met the technical requirements of a sandblasting abrasive. In addition, the Rockwell hardness of the AQSS with particle size of 1.0–3.0 mm exceeded 50.00 HRC. The particle size of 1–2.5 mm was particularly adapted to use as a sandblasting abrasive. It is clear that AQSS can be used as a sandblasting abrasive by analyzing and comparing the particle size and hardness of the AQSS and commonly used sandblasting abrasives.

The fusion of the leaching and purification processes was realized by directly using microemulsion as the leaching agent. The bis-(2-ethyhexyl) phosphoric acid (DEHPA)/n-heptane/NaOH microemulsion system was established to directly leach vanadates from sodium-roasted vanadium slag. The effect of the leaching agent on the leaching efficiency was investigated, in addition to the molar ratio of H2O/NaDEHP (W), DEHPA concentration, solid/liquid ratio, stirring time, and leaching temperature. In optimal situations, the vanadium leaching efficiency reaches 79.57%. The X-ray diffraction characterization of the leaching residue and the Raman spectrum of the microemulsion before and after leaching demonstrate the successful entry of vanadates from the sodium-roasted vanadium slag into the microemulsion. The proposed method successfully realizes the leaching and purification of vanadates in one step, thereby greatly reducing production costs and environmental pollution. It also offers a new way to achieve the green recovery of valuable metals from solid resources.

Below-ground Urban stormwater networks (BUSNs) are critical for removing excess rainfall from impervious areas and preventing or mitigating urban flooding. However, available BUSN data are sparse, preventing modeling and analyzing urban hydrologic processes at regional and larger scales. We thus propose a novel algorithm for estimating BUSNs from existing, extensively available land surface data such as street network, topography, land use/land cover, etc. The rationale underpinning this algorithm are the causal relationships between the topology of BUSNs and urban surface features that we derive based on the Graph theory concepts. We implement this algorithm using web services for data retrieval and high-performance computing techniques for big-data analyses. Lastly, we validate this algorithm at a small portion of Los Angeles and Seattle, and the metropolitan areas of Houston and Baltimore in the U.S., where real BUSN data are available to the public. Results show that our algorithm can effectively capture 60–75 % of the topology of real BUSN data, depending on the supporting data quality. This algorithm has promising potential to support large-scale urban hydrologic modeling and future urban drainage system planning.

Coastal backwater effects are caused by the downstream water level increase as the result of elevated sea level, high river discharge and their compounding influence. Such effects have crucial impacts on floods in densely populated regions but have not been well represented in large-scale river models used in Earth System Models (ESMs), partly due to model mesh deficiency and oversimplifications of river hydrodynamics. Using two mid-Atlantic river basins as a testbed, we perform the first attempt to simulate the backwater effects comprehensively over a coastal region using the MOSART river transport model under an Earth system model framework i.e., Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM) configured on a regionally-refined unstructured mesh, with a focus on understanding the backwater drivers and their long-term variations. By including sea level variations at the river downstream boundary, the model performance in capturing backwaters is greatly improved. We also propose a new flood event selection scheme to facilitate the decomposition of backwater drivers into different components. Our results show that while storm surge is a key driver, the influence of extreme discharge cannot be neglected, particularly when the river drains to a narrow river-like estuary. Compound flooding, while not necessarily increasing the flood peaks, exacerbates the flood risk by extending the duration of multiple coastal and fluvial processes. Furthermore, our simulations and analysis highlight the increasing strength of backwater effects due to sea level rise and more frequent storm surge during 1990–2019. Thus, backwaters need to be properly represented in ESMs for improving predictive understanding of coastal flooding.

Based on two considerations of making full use of the residual heat of vanadium slag and exploring a novel green vanadium extraction process, this article employs vanadium slag with high MgO content as raw material, blowing oxygen into the molten vanadium slag and using the residual heat of the vanadium slag to carry out high-temperature roasting experiments. XRD and SEM/EDS were used to characterize the phase evolution and morphology of vanadium slag with high MgO content during oxidation. The results show that at a high temperature of 1723 K, the trivalent vanadium in vanadium slag can be partly transformed into acid-soluble pentavalent vanadium. Titanium-bearing spinel was oxidized into a large amount of strip pseudobrookite Fe2TiO5. After oxidation, vanadium existed in the form of the solid solution of magnesium pyrovanadate (Mg, Mn, Ca)2V2O7. The leaching rate of roasted vanadium slag with high MgO content is significantly higher than that of industrial vanadium slag. With the increase of oxygen blowing time from 10 to 30 minutes, the leaching rate of roasted vanadium slag with high MgO content increases from 23.19 to 53.69 pct.

This article investigated the saturated solubility of MgO in converter vanadium slag and its influencing factors. The experimental results of MgO dissolution equilibrium are consistent with the theoretical calculation results. The results show that in MgO saturated vanadium slag, MgO mainly exists in MgV2O4 and MgSiO3. The increase of V2O3 content or the decrease of the FeO/SiO2 ratio is beneficial to increasing the saturated solubility of MgO in the FeO-SiO2-V2O3 slag system. The saturated solubility of MgO in vanadium slag increases from 7.5 to 8.0 wt.% when the temperature increases from 1633 to 1753 K. In addition, the solubility of MgO also increases with the increase of TiO2 and Al2O3 content and decreases with the increase of MnO content.

Asymmetric mandibular prognathism is a clinically common skeletal dentomaxillofacial deformity. Unilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (USSRO) is an effective alternative procedure to bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (BSSRO) for some patients. However, the biomechanical effect of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) of USSRO has not been fully studied. This study aims to evaluate the stress distribution changes in the TMJ of asymmetric mandibular prognathism treated with BSSRO/USSRO, to validate the clinical feasibility of USSRO. Nineteen patients with mandibular prognathism patients who were treated with BSSRO (n=12) and USSRO (n=7) had preoperative and postoperative computed tomographic scanning. Preoperative and postoperative 3-dimensional finite element analysis (FEA) of functional TMJ movements were made on one BSSRO patient and one USSRO patient. In all patients, the ANB angle and mandibular deviation were significantly improved postoperatively. There was no significant difference in the postoperative ANB angle and mandibular deviation between the BSSRO group and the USSRO group. In two preoperative FEA models, the maximum stresses of non-deviation side TMJ structures were greater than the deviation side during functional movements. The unbalanced stress distribution was corrected postoperatively in both BSSRO/USSRO FE models. Both BSSRO/USSRO can improve the ANB angle and mandibular deviation. The bilateral TMJ structure in patients with asymmetric mandibular prognathism had unbalanced stress, which could be significantly improved with the USSRO as effectively as BSSRO.

Background: Sorafenib is an effective treatment for radioiodine (RAI)-refractory differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC), but adverse events limit its use. We investigated the synergistic anticancer effects of silencing lncRNA-PVT1 and sorafenib in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) cell lines.Methods: B-CPAP, TPC-1, IHH-4 and K1 papillary thyroid carcinoma cell lines were used. A small interfering RNA (siRNA)-PVT1 sequence was used to silence lncRNA-PVT1 expression. Cell proliferation, migration and invasion, apoptosis, and cell cycle assays were conducted following PVT1 silencing and/or sorafenib treatment.Results: Sorafenib had inhibitory effects on PTC cell lines, and the cell survival rate decreased with increasing concentrations. LncRNA-PVT1 knockdown combined with 9 μM sorafenib in B-CPAP cells and 13 μM sorafenib in TPC-1 cells synergistically reduced the number of colonies formed, reduced invasion and migration, and promoted cell apoptosis.Conclusion: Sorafenib had inhibitory effects on TPC-1, B-CPAP, IHH4, and K1 cells, and lncRNA-PVT1 knockdown combined with sorafenib in B-CPAP and TPC-1 cells synergistically reduced the number of colonies formed, reduced invasion and migration, and promoted cell apoptosis.

Bedload flux is notoriously challenging to measure and model. The dynamics of bedload, therefore, remains largely unknown in most fluvial systems worldwide. We present a global scale bedload flux model as part of the WBMsed modeling framework. Our results show that the model can very well predict the distribution of water discharge and suspended sediment and well predict bedload. We analyze the model’s bedload predictions sensitivity to river slope, particle size, discharge, river width, and suspended sediment. We found that the model is most responsive to spatial dynamics in river discharge and slope. We analyze the relationship between bedload and total sediment flux globally and in representative longitudinal river profiles (Amazon, Mississippi, and Lena Rivers). We show that while, as expected, the proportion of bedload is decreasing from headwater to the coasts, there is considerable variability between basins and along river corridors. The latter is largely responsive to changes in suspended sediment and river slope due to dams and reservoirs. We provide a new estimate of water and sediment fluxes to global oceans from 2,067 largest river outlets (draining 67% of the global continental mass). Estimated water discharge (30,579 km3/y) corresponds well to past estimates however sediment flux is considerably higher. Of the total 22 Gt/y estimated average sediment flux to global oceans, 19 Gt/y is transported as washload, 1 Gt/y as bedload, and 2 Gt/y as suspended bed material. The largest 25 rivers are predicted to transport over 55% of total sediment flux to global oceans.

Bed-material sediment particle size data, particularly the median sediment particle size (D50), are critical for understanding and modeling riverine sediment transport. However, sediment particle size observations are primarily available at individual sites. Large-scale modeling and assessment of riverine sediment transport are limited by the lack of continuous regional maps of bed-material sediment particle size. We hence present a map of D50 over the contiguous US in a vector format that corresponds to approximately 2.7 million river segments (i.e., flowlines) in the National Hydrography Dataset Plus (NHDPlus) dataset. We develop the map in four steps: (1) collect and process the observed D50 data from 2577 U.S. Geological Survey stations or U.S. Army Corps of Engineers sampling locations; (2) collocate these data with the NHDPlus flowlines based on their geographic locations, resulting in 1691 flowlines with collocated D50 values; (3) develop a predictive model using the eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) machine learning method based on the observed D50 data and the corresponding climate, hydrology, geology, and other attributes retrieved from the NHDPlus dataset; and (4) estimate the D50 values for flowlines without observations using the XGBoost predictive model. We expect this map to be useful for various purposes, such as research in large-scale river sediment transport using model- and data-driven approaches, teaching environmental and earth system sciences, planning and managing floodplain zones, etc. The map is available at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.4921987 (Li et al., 2021a).

Phase transitions are a common phenomenon in condensed matter and act as a critical degree of freedom that can be employed to tailor the mechanical or electronic properties of materials. Understanding the fundamental mechanisms of the thermodynamics and kinetics of phase transitions is, thus, at the core of modern materials design. Conventionally, studies of phase transitions have, to a large extent, focused on pristine bulk phases. However, realistic materials exist in a complex form; their microstructures consist of different point and extended defects. The presence of defects impacts the thermodynamics and kinetics of phase transitions, but has been commonly ignored or treated separately. In recent years, with the significant advances in theoretical and experimental techniques, there has been an increasing research interest in modeling and characterizing how defects impact or even dictate phase transitions. The present review systematically discusses the recent progress in understanding the kinetics of defect-characterized phase transitions, derives the key mechanisms underlying these phase transitions, and envisions the remaining challenges and fruitful research directions. We hope that these discussions and insights will help to inspire future research and development in the field.

Risk management has reduced vulnerability to floods and droughts globally1,2, yet their impacts are still increasing3. An improved understanding of the causes of changing impacts is therefore needed, but has been hampered by a lack of empirical data4,5. On the basis of a global dataset of 45 pairs of events that occurred within the same area, we show that risk management generally reduces the impacts of floods and droughts but faces difficulties in reducing the impacts of unprecedented events of a magnitude not previously experienced. If the second event was much more hazardous than the first, its impact was almost always higher. This is because management was not designed to deal with such extreme events: for example, they exceeded the design levels of levees and reservoirs. In two success stories, the impact of the second, more hazardous, event was lower, as a result of improved risk management governance and high investment in integrated management. The observed difficulty of managing unprecedented events is alarming, given that more extreme hydrological events are projected owing to climate change3.

Phenolic compounds are considered the main bioactive components in kiwifruit. In order to well understand the accumulation pattern of health-beneficial phenolics, and to obtain high-quality kiwifruits with health-promoting characteristics, the changes of physicochemical properties, phenolic compounds, antioxidant capacities, and inhibitory effects on digestive enzymes of “Donghong” kiwifruits during maturation were systematically investigated. Noticeable variations in physicochemical properties and phenolic profiles were observed throughout the maturation stages of “Donghong” kiwifruit. According to the HPLC analysis, phenolic compounds, including chlorogenic acid, (−)-epicatechin, procyanidin B2, quercetin-3-O-rhamnoside, gallic acid, neochlorogenic acid, and caffeic acid, were found in “Donghong” kiwifruit, while chlorogenic acid was the most abundant phenolic compound. Considering the accumulation patterns of both total phenolics and soluble solids content, the optimum harvest time of kiwifruit with relatively high level of health-beneficial components was determined. Furthermore, “Donghong” kiwifruit exerted remarkable antioxidant capacities, and inhibitory effects on pancreatic lipase and α-glucosidase. Indeed, the Pearson’s correlation showed that chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, (−)-epicatechin, and quercetin-3-O-rhamnoside could be major contributors to the antioxidant activity and inhibitory effects on digestive enzymes. Results are beneficial for better understanding of the accumulation patterns of health-beneficial phenolic compounds, which can aid in the targeting of specific developmental stages with an optimal phenolic profile for the production of health-beneficial products.

Polyoxometalates (POMs) are intriguing catalysts for various reactions. However, the function of their counter-cations is overlooked. Here, we show that flexible counter-cations of methyltrioctylammonium can trigger polyoxovanadates to transform from octahedrally coordinated H2V10O284- to tetrahedrally coordinated V10O262-. This structural transformation enhances the performance tunability of POM chemistry and improves catalyst design.

Vanadium(V) valence analysis is of great significance to the vanadium recovery and environmental safety of the vanadium extraction industry. The stability constants and stereo structures of complexes between EDTA and vanadium ions with various valences are only roughly estimated, which hinders the development of vanadium valence analysis. This work investigates in detail the complexation behavior of V(IV) and V(V), the most common valences in aqueous solution, with EDTA. The stability constants of [VO(EDTA)]2− and [VO2(EDTA)]3− complexes are determined to be 107.03±0.14 and 105.47±0.25 at pH 6, respectively. First-principles calculations reveal that the stereo structure of the [VO(EDTA)]2− complex is comprised of three 5-membered rings while that of the [VO2(EDTA)]3− complex is comprised of one 8-membered ring, which calls for the reconsideration of V–EDTA structures assumed commonly. This work has corrected the assumed stability constants and stereo structures of V–EDTA complexes and provided the essential knowledge to develop vanadium valence analysis in the vanadium industry.

An effective and environment-friendly method based on one-step sodium hydroxide roasting was proposed to extract vanadium and chromium from vanadium-chromium slag. In optimal conditions (roasting temperature 800 °C and NaOH addition dosage 30%), vanadium spinel was converted into NaVO3 while chromium spinel was converted into Na2CrO4 and CaCrO4. Leaching efficiencies of vanadium and chromium reached 94.87% and 80.51%, respectively. During sodium roasting, Na also reacted with Si, Fe, Ti and Al to produce sodium salts of high melting points, which inhibits sintering of reaction mixture and facilitates the formation of vanadates and chromates. The leaching residues consist mainly of Fe2O3, which can be recycled to converter as flux of slagging materials to achieve resource recycling and zero-discharge of solid wastes. This work has provides a simple green way to extract vanadium and chromium from vanadium-chromium slag, which puts forward the green comprehensive utilization of vanadium-titanium magnetite ores with high chromium contents.

To increase vanadium recovery, it is critical to understand the intrinsic phase evolution during vanadium slag roasting. This work proposes the novel concept of `atomic atmosphere' to effectively evaluate and recognize the microscopic state of the vanadium atom in vanadium slag before and after roasting. Atomic atmosphere includes the chemical state, chemical environment and spatial environment of the atom, and provides a universal way to explore the microscopic phase evolution mechanism during the metal-extraction process from minerals.

In order to well understand the physicochemical characteristics and biological activities of polysaccharides (OPPs) from different cultivars of okra collected in China, the chemical characteristics, rheological properties, antioxidant activities, in vitro binding properties, and in vitro inhibitory effects on α-glucosidase of polysaccharides from five representative okra cultivars, including ‘Lvjian’, ‘Kalong8’, ‘Shuiguo’, ‘Taiwanwufu’, and ‘Kalong3’, were investigated and compared. Results showed that the constituent monosaccharides of OPPs were similar, which composed of rhamnose, galacturonic acid, galactose, and arabinose. However, their weight-average molecular weights varied from 2.76 × 103 to 4.20 × 103 kDa, and from 0.11 × 103 to 0.90 × 103 kDa, respectively. The uronic acids and degrees of esterification of OPPs ranged from 39.32% to 61.68%, and from 21.66% to 30.02%, respectively. OPPs exhibited typical shear-thinning behavior and viscoelastic properties. Furthermore, OPPs exhibited remarkable antioxidant activities, in vitro binding capacities, and inhibitory effects on α-glucosidase, which might be attributed to their relatively high content of uronic acids, high degrees of esterification, and high molecular weights. Results are helpful for better understanding of the physicochemical structures and bioactivities of OPPs, and OPPs had good application prospects as functional food ingredients for industrial applications.

Non-starch polysaccharides are considered the main bioactive ingredients in kiwifruits. In order to well understand the chemical structures and antioxidant activities of non-starch polysaccharides from different varieties of kiwifruits (KPSs), the physicochemical characteristics and antioxidant activities of KPSs extracted by hot water extraction from Actinidia deliciosa cv. Hayward, A. chinensis cv. Hort16A, A. chinensis cv. Jinshi, A. chinensis cv. Hongshi, A. polygama , A. macrosperma , and A. arguta were investigated and compared. Results showed that extraction yields and contents of total uronic acids in KPSs ranged from 2.60% to 5.52%, and from 35.07% to 42.20%, respectively. Molecular weights and intrinsic viscosities of KPSs ranged from 1.405 × 10 5 to 1.620 × 10 6 Da, and from 0.34 dL/g to 1.24 dL/g, respectively. The dominant constituent monosaccharides of KPSs were galacturonic acid, arabinose, and galactose. Furthermore, KPSs from kiwifruits, especially KPSs extracted from A. arguta , exerted remarkable 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid and nitric oxide radical scavenging activities, which might be partially attributed to their high content of unmethylated galacturonic acids. Results are helpful for better understanding of the chemical structures and antioxidant activities of KPSs, and KPSs had potential to be further explored as natural antioxidants for the application in the functional food industry.

Introduction We discuss our findings on the retention of the medially displaced residual condyle during the treatment of type III temporomandibular joint ankylosis, as well as the postoperative results observed during follow-up. Materials and methods Thirty-two patients with type III temporomandibular joint ankylosis that met the inclusion criteria of the study were included as subjects. The morphological integrity of the medially displaced residual condyle was verified in all of the participating patients through the use of cone beam computed tomography. The duration of the ankylosis ranged from 2 to 12 years. The maximum length that patients were able to open their mouths ranged from 6 mm to 14 mm. The surgical treatments used in this report included the separation of bony fusions between the condyle and the glenoid fossa, resection of the ankylosed sites, preservation of the displaced condyles in their medial position and suturing the remains of the disc to its typical position or taking the temporalis myofascial flap instead. The long-term results were evaluated by computed tomography and clinical follow-up examinations. Results Three-year postoperative follow-up examinations were performed for all of the patients included in this study. No recurrences were observed in the patients who adhered to the postoperative therapeutic advice. Patients had an average maximal mouth opening distance of 34.50 ± 5.75 mm as recorded during the final follow-up examination. Conclusions The released medially residual condyle can still function normally in temporomandibular joint movement and without reankylosis after a bone fusion resection. The displaced condyle should thus be preserved instead of being removed during the treatment of type III temporomandibular joint ankylosis.

In China, the wastewater produced after vanadate precipitation (AVP wastewater) from industrial vanadium extraction contains toxic V(V) and carcinogenic Cr(VI). When considering environmental protection and wastewater use, V(V) and Cr(VI) must be extracted and separated from the hazardous AVP wastewater. However, separating V(V) and Cr(VI) is difficult because of their highly similar physicochemical properties. Herein, we propose a novel anion exchange method based on the in situ selectively reductive desorption of Cr(VI) to separate and extract V(V) and Cr(VI) using a weak organic reductant (ethanol) to selectively reduce Cr(VI) anions and transform them into Cr3+ cations, while maintaining V(V) in a H2V10O284- anion form. We indicate that the efficient separation of Cr(VI) from V(V) can be attributed to selective Cr(VI) anion reduction via ethanol. We applied this anion exchange method to separate and recover Cr(VI) and V(V) in AVP wastewater with a Cr(VI) recovery of 95.59% and a V(V) recovery of 94.54%. The final Cr2O3 and V2O5 products had a purity of 98.03% and 96.82%, respectively. This study provides novel insights into the simultaneous separation and extraction of analog transition metals and a comprehensive method to use hazardous wastewater.

The high-chromium vanadium slag is treated by magnesium roasting-acid leaching to obtain Cr-containing tailings, which are not the solid waste but important valuable resources for various fields. In order to extract Cr from these tailings, sodium carbonate as annexing agent mixed tailings was roasted and then leached by water. There are several factors that were investigated including roasting temperature, roasting time, the molar ratio of Na/(V+Cr), leaching time, leaching temperature, and the ratio of L/S. The Cr-containing tailings before and after roasting and the residue after leaching were characterized by XRD. It is indicated that Cr in tailings was all entered into leaching solution due to residue not found Cr-containing phase. Under the optimal conditions, the maximum leaching rate of Cr was 92.49%.

Based on two considerations of making full use of the residual heat of V-slag and exploring a novel green V extraction process, this paper employs MgO as the roasting additive, blows oxygen into the molten V-slag, and uses the residual heat of the V-slag for pre-roasting at high temperature. The influence of MgO on the phase structure of V-slags during oxidation has been investigated by XRD and SEM/EDS. The result shows that MgO as the roasting additive can convert V-slag at a high temperature of 1723 K. With the increase of blowing time of oxygen, the trivalent V in the spinel phase gradually disperses in the silicate matrix and then concentrates in the form of magnesium vanadate solid solution (Mg, Mn, Ca)2V2O7. Furthermore, with the increase of MgO content, the peak intensity of the Mg2V2O7 diffraction peak increases significantly. When the MgO content in V-slag increases from 4.01 to 12.74 wt%, the extraction efficiency increases from 18.99 to 64.07%.
