Abstract

In this paper, a self‐powered piezoelectric sensor is developed for pressure monitoring. Though molecular design and processing optimum of piezoelectric materials, the the accuracy of pressure sensing was significantly improved, and the sphygmic signal of the human body can be detected. In particular, the prepared sensor is capable to be integrated under flexible OLED display to realize sphygmic signal detection. 53. Stretchable and self-healing electronic skin based on a piezoelectric/triboelectric polyester elastomer for deep and superficial sensation.

Abstract

Fully emulating the function of human skin through electronic skin depends on the simultaneous realization of both superficial and deep sensations. However, the majority of current research on electronic skin is limited to tactile-based bionics, focusing only on superficial sensation. In this study, a stretchable and self-healing elastomer based on 2,3-BDO (BBPE) is fabricated as electronic skin through molecular structure design with abundant dipoles and restricted crystallinity in the linear backbone. By realizing the piezoelectric and triboelectric output, our electronic skin (PBES) is capable of detecting various contact and contactless signals to realize not only superficial sensations of touch and stretch but also deep sensations of position and state. Furthermore, the PBES exhibits human-skin-like properties with elastic elongation higher than 300% even after 100 cycles and self-healing properties with a recovery of 77.34% of its electrical performance at 37 °C within 10 minutes. Moreover, the utilization of bio-based monomers ensures its biocompatibility and hydrophobicity similar to human skin. Abstract

Polymers that release small molecules in response to mechanical force are promising for a wide variety of applications. While offering a general platform for mechanically triggered release, previous mechanophore designs based on masked 2-furylcarbinol derivatives are limited to polar protic solvent environments for efficient release of the chemical payload. Here, we report a masked furfuryl carbonate mechanophore incorporating a tethered primary alcohol that enables efficient release of a hydroxycoumarin cargo in the absence of a protic solvent. Density functional calculations also implicate an intramolecular hydrogen bonding interaction between the tethered alcohol and the carbonyl oxygen of the carbonate that reduces the activation barrier for carbonate fragmentation leading to molecular release. This new mechanophore design expands the generality of the masked 2-furylcarbinol platform for mechanically triggered release, enabling the implementation of this strategy in a wider range of chemical environments.

Abstract

Ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury during renal transplantation remains a prevalent challenge. Recent studies proposed protective effects against renal I/R injury using electric fields during organ preservation stage. However, I/R process extends to the post reperfusion stage and traditional electrical stimulation methods face limitations, requiring power sources and electrodes. Hence, there is a need for implantable, biodegradable materials capable of continuously generating electrical stimulation to treat kidney I/R injury over an extended period. In this work, a polylactide/Vitamin B2(PLLA/VB2) composite nanofibrous membrane was designed. The incorporation of VB2into PLLA, coupled with electrospinning, significantly enhanced its piezoelectric performance and flexibility, thereby enabling optimal adherence and efficient in-situelectrical stimulation. Experimental results underscored that PLLA/VB2nanofibrous membrane could mitigate tubular injury, facilitate cell regeneration, and alleviate interstitial fibrosis possibly by preserving mitochondrial structure and function. This innovative approach not only pioneers new strategies for addressing I/R related conditions but also offers potential treatments for a range of diseases linked to oxidative stress.

83. Leaders are not created equal: reexamining the assumptions of effective leadership in the context of power distance

Abstract

People give meaning to their experience through sense-making devices such as culture. Power distance, for example, is a critically important sense-making mechanism (Hofstede, 1980). Leadership can also be seen as a sense-making device that helps people understand organizational outcomes (Meindl, Ehrlich, & Dukerich, 1985). This thesis explores the intersection of these two things. Using both experimental and field research designs, I test whether and how understanding follower power distance values encourages us to rethink some of the classical assumptions scholars have made about leadership. In one empirical paper, I re-examine the assumption that election, as compared with appointment, grants a leader more legitimacy in the eyes of followers. Through correlational and experimental designs, I find that power distance is positively (negatively) associated with the legitimacy of appointed (elected) leaders. In my second empirical paper, I address the dark side of leader humor expression. Across a series of studies involving multiple cultural samples, I demonstrate the potential emotional cost, in the form of employee emotional labor (surface acting), posed by leader humor expression at work. I also find the effect of leader humor expression on employee surface acting to be particularly strong among people with high power distance values. The third empirical paper highlights the role of power distance at team levels. Using multi-source top management team data that were collected at different time points, I show that leaders who seek prestige in the eyes of group members reduce task-related debates in high power distance groups. Together, these findings explain how and why many 'effective' leadership characteristics and practices may have entirely different consequences for followers with different cultural programming.

Abstract

The highly miniaturized and integrated electronic devices have demanded contactless current sensors with scale miniaturization, structure flexibility, self‐powering and heat resistance. Herein, a novel magnetoelectric current sensor (MCS) based on polylactide/VB2 composites and FeCoV is prepared using in‐situ coating and poling‐free methods. The use of polylactide/VB2 composite makes the MCS self‐powered and heat resistant, and the use of FeCoV makes the MCS highly flexible. The in‐situ coating and poling‐free methods endow the polylactide/VB2 composite and FeCoV good interfacial coupling. As a result, the MCS possesses good linearity over 0.999 and high sensitivity of 0.64 mV/A to the external current, even at a high temperature of 120 °C. Besides, the MCS presents high durability after 200 000 cycles. The MCS with mini size, self‐powering, heat resistance, high flexibility and durability has great potential in safety monitoring of electronic devices fields. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The polyvinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene (PVDF-TrFE) piezoelectric film was obtained by the in-situ polarization, which 10x increased the piezoelectric coefficient d33. By using our polarizing system, the PVDF-TrFE film can be polarized in 5 minutes at room temperature. Compared with the traditional polarization method, the in-situ polarization was performed with low poling voltage, short poling time, and can ensure the obtained PVDF-TrFE film with enhanced piezoelectric performances and uniform distribution among large area. The results provide a new method for PVDF-TrFE films with large area and high piezoelectric coefficient, which improves the piezoelectric performance and broadens the application in energy harvesting.

96. Photoswitch generation using mechanical force

Abstract

The field of polymer mechanochem. investigates the use of mech. force to promote selective chem. transformations. Polymer chains transduce external mech. forces to a particular covalent bond in mech. sensitive mols. called mechanophores, resulting in a specific chem. reaction. We report on a new mechanophore based on a cyclopentadienemaleimide Diels-Alder adduct that undergoes a retro-[4+2] cycloaddn. reaction promoted by mech. force to reveal a diarylethene (DAE) photoswitch. Initially, the mechanophore is photochem. inert because it does not possess the necessary 6p electronic framework required for electocyclization; however, ultrasound-induced mech. activation of the mechanophore covalently linked to polymer chains generates a DAE photoswitch, which isomerizes between colorless and colored forms upon exposure to UV and visible light. Control expts. confirm the mech. origin of the revealed photochromic activity and illustrate the thermal stability and reversible switching properties of the cyclopentadiene-based DAE photoswitch.

Abstract

Materials that change properties upon exposure to applied stimuli have received tremendous interest. Among various stimuli, light has unique advantages because it allows precise control over the location and timing. Moreover, irradn. parameters, such as light intensity and wavelength, can easily be modulated to comply with the system. Mol. design of polymers incorporating photocleavable groups enables photochem. control of covalent bonds or non-covalent intermol. interactions in polymer materials. We have developed three classes of new light-responsive polymer systems: 1) layer-by-layer polyelectrolyte films that switch interlayer charge-charge interactions from attractive to repulsive, 2) photopatternable conjugated polymers with photocleavable solubilizing sidechains that switches soly. in orthogonal solvents, and 3) polymer gels with phototunable viscoelastic properties and solubilities. Such novel photochem. approaches to control polymers have potential applications in three-dimensional photolithog. and photolabile drug delivery systems.
