58. Inter-annual reduction in rice Cd and its eco-environmental controls in 6-year biannual mineral amendment in subtropical double-rice cropping ecosystems

Abstract

The alkaline mineral amendment is a practical means of alleviating Cd concentration in rice grain (CdR) in the short-term; however, the long-term remediation effect of mineral amendment on the CdR and the eco-environmental controls remains unknown. Here a mineral (Si–Ca–Mg) amendment, calcined primarily from molybdenum tailings and dolomite, was applied biannually over 6 years (12 seasons) to acidic and moderately Cd-contaminated double-rice cropping ecosystems. This study investigated the inter-annual variation of Cd in the rice-soil ecosystem and the eco-environmental controls in subtropical rice ecosystems. CdR was reduced by 50%–86% following mineral amendment. The within-year reduction in CdR was similar between early rice (50%–86%, mean of 68%) and late rice (68%–85%, mean of 74%), leading to CdR in all early rice and in 83% of late rice samples below the upper limit (0.2 mg kg−1) of the China National Food Safety Standards. In contrast, the inter-annual reduction in CdR was moderately variable, showing a greater CdR reduction in the later 3 years (73%–86%) than in the former 3 years (54%–79%). Three years continuous mineral amendment was required to guarantee the safety rice production. The concentrations of DTPA-extractable and exchangeable Cd fractions in soil were reduced, while the concentration of oxides-bound Cd was increased. In addition, the soil pH, concentrations of Olsen-P and exchangeable Ca and Mg were elevated. These imply a lower apparent phytoavailability of Cd in the soil following mineral amendment. An empirical model of the 3-variable using soil DTPA-Cd, soil Olsen-P, and a climatic factor (precipitation) effectively predicted temporal changes in CdR. Our study demonstrates that Cd phytoavailability in soil (indexed by DTPA-extractable Cd) and climatic factors (e.g., temperature and precipitation) may directly/indirectly control the inter-annual reduction in CdR following mineral amendment in slightly and moderately Cd-contaminated paddy ecosystems.

Abstract

Due to the lack of phase angle information in the low-voltage (LV) distribution network, the existing three-phase power flow calculation methods in LV distribution network assume that the voltage phase angle of the slack bus is symmetric. In practice, the LV side of the actual distribution transformer is often asymmetric. Based on the actual smart meter measurements, taking phase A of the slack bus as zero phase reference point, the PV and PQ model of phase B and phase C for the slack bus are constructed. Considering the actual access mode and control mode of the photovoltaic inverter power supply (PIPS) in the LV distribution network, a more realistic power and voltage independent control model of three phase relative to the neutral point is established. Based on the above two constructed models, three-phase power flow model of low-voltage distribution network considering phase asymmetry and photovoltaic access is further proposed. The effectiveness of the model built in this paper is verified on the modified IEEE-13 bus distribution system. The simulation results show that the model constructed in this paper can effectively and accurately calculate the three-phase power flow in the LV distribution network.

Abstract

The Cretaceous Huahui basin lies along the Dunhua–Mishan fault (Dun–Mi fault), which is one of the northern branches of Tan–Lu fault in northeastern China. The study of the formation and the tectonic movements that took place in the basin can provide very important information for deciphering the tectonic evolution of northeastern China during Cretaceous–Early Cenozoic. The field analysis of fault-slip data collected from different units in the basin, demonstrates changes in the paleo-stress state that reveals a three-stage tectonic movement during the Cretaceous–Early Cenozoic. The earliest tectonic movement was NW–SE extension, which was responsible for the formation of the basin and sedimentary infilling during the Early Cretaceous. Dating of the andesite in the fill indicates it began during about 119.17 ± 0.80 Ma. The extensional structures formed in the Latest Early Cretaceous imply that this tectonic movement lasted until the beginning of the Late Cretaceous. The second stage began during the Late Cretaceous when the tectonic stress state changed and was dominated by NW–SE compression and NE–SW extension, which caused the inversion of the extensional basin. This compression folded the Early Cretaceous deposits and reactivated pre-existing faults and uplifted pre-existing granite in the basin. The strata and the unconformity in the basin shows that this compressive phase probably took place during the Late Cretaceous and ended in the Early Paleogene by a compressional regime with NE–SW compression and NW–SE extension that constitutes the third stage. The tectonic stress fields documented in the Huahui basin provide insight into the influences of plate tectonics on the crustal evolution of northeastern China during the Cretaceous to Early Cenozoic. These results show that the development of Huahui basin was controlled by the northwestward subduction of the paleo-Pacific plate during the Cretaceous, and later by the far-field effects of India–Asia collision in the Paleogene.

Abstract

Due to the guarded nature of technology and industry with respect to their proprietary information, real-time data sharing among subsystems of an interconnected power grid is not a viable option. To estimate external equivalent parameters accurately when the external network information is unavailable or not considered, a two-port black-box external equivalent method, using an improved branch outage simulation based on direct current (DC) power flow (BOSDC) approach, is proposed as an alternative to some existing non-topology based, static equivalent techniques with an assumption lies in that the state of the external network remains almost unchanged before and after the branch outage. Moreover, use of BOSDC improves the accuracy of equivalent parameters and the performance of static security analysis in particular by retaining the quadratic term, which is represented as the product between network susceptance increment and the voltage phase angle increment. The linearity of the parameter estimation equation in the proposed method gets rid of potential issues with setting initial values and convergence criteria. Additionally, the significant power flow change before and after the branch outage can effectively adapt the interference of measurement errors. Simulation results on the modified IEEE 39-bus system and the practical Guangdong-Hong Kong power system verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract

MAP kinase phosphatase 1 (MKP1) has been identified as an antiapoptotic protein via sustaining mitochondrial function. However, the role of MKP1 in neuroinflammation has not been fully understood. The aim of this study is to figure out the influence of MKP1 in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)‐treated microglia BV‐2 cells and investigate whether MKP1 reduces BV‐2 cell death via modulating endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and mitochondrial dysfunction. The results of this study demonstrated that MKP1 was rapidly downregulated after exposure to LPS. However, the transfection of MKP1 adenovirus could reverse cell viability and attenuate LPS‐mediated BV‐2 cell apoptosis. Mechanistically, MKP1 overexpression alleviated ER stress and corrected LPS‐induced calcium overloading. Besides, MKP1 adenovirus transfection also reversed mitochondrial bioenergetics, maintained mitochondrial membrane potential, and blocked mitochondria‐initiated apoptosis signals. Furthermore, we found that MKP1 overexpression is associated with inactivation of mitogen‐activated protein kinase–c‐Jun N‐terminal kinase (MAPK–JNK) pathway. Interestingly, the activation of MAPK–JNK pathway could abolish the protective effects of MKP1 on BV‐2 cells survival and mitochondrial function in the presence of LPS. Altogether, our results identified MKP1 as a primary defender of neuroinflammation via modulating ER stress and mitochondrial function in a manner dependent on MAPK–JNK pathway. Abstract

Three generations of calcite veins filling in fractures have been recognized in Dabashan Thrust and Fold Belt in China. Reconstruction of the paleostress states corresponding to and studies on fluid inclusions and stable isotopes from the wall-rocks and the veins filled in the fractures have been carried out. The first vein, which occurs in the fractures limited to competent bed and perpendicular to the layer, was precipitated from liquids during diagenesis. Homogenization temperatures (Th) of fluid inclusions in the veins range from 126°C to 267°C, which are similar to those obtained by the wall-rocks, i.e., from 152°C to 227°C. The second-generation veins were filled in three groups of faults corresponding to NE-SW compression. Homogenization temperatures of the fluid inclusions show bimodal distribution, with peak Th-population values from 140°C to 210°C and 230°C to 270°C. The salinity values exhibit evidently two groups either. The bimodal distribution of both homogenization temperatures and salinities indicates that the fluid flowing within the fractures posses two stages of evolution. The third-generation vein was filled in NNW-SSE to NWW-SEE trending strike-slip faults, which were formed under NW-SE tectonic compression. The homogenization temperatures obtained by fluid inclusions in the veins range from 101°C to 257°C. The wide change in Th values possibly indicates that re-equilibrium has occurred for the fluid inclusions during the activity of the faults. The δ 13 C and δ 18 O values of the wall rocks range from -1.6‰ to 5.6‰ and 16.7‰ to 25.2‰, respectively. The values of δ 18 O are similar to or lower slightly than marine carbonate(29‰). The δ 13 C and δ 18 O values of the first-generation veins are from -1.8‰ to 2.2‰ and 18.4‰ to 23.1‰, respectively, which are similar to those of wallrocks except showing smaller variation. The δ 13 C and δ 18 O values of the second-generation veins range from -9.2‰ to 4.7‰ and 13.2‰ to 27.9‰. Compared to wallrocks and the first-generation veins, the second-generation veins exhibit larger variability in both δ 13 C and δ 18 O values. The third-generation veins show similar situation to the second-generation veins in δ 13 C values and the large variation in carbon isotopic compositions with the δ 13 C values from -9.2‰ to 4.8‰. But the δ 18 O values are not as large variable as that of the second-generation veins, and the δ 18 O values are from 12.8‰ to 19.8‰. The δD values measured by fluid inclusions from the second- and third-generation veins are from -62‰ to -90‰ and -74‰ to -87‰, respectively. On the plot of δ 18 O fluids vs δD fluids , parts of samples are fall in the scope of formation water, some samples show slightly lower δD values relative to formation water.

Abstract

High-pressure(HP) veins were extensively developed in western Tianshan high-pressure(HP) metamorphic belt. The HP vein and host-rocks were analyzed by electronic microprobe to trace the origin of vein-forming fluids. Analytical data show that the immediately adjacent host-rocks of the studied HP vein are eclogites and gradually turned into blueschist as the distance from the veins increases, which indicates that the vein-forming fluid was derived from adjacent host-rocks; the boundaries between the vein and the host-rocks are sharp, which indicates that the fracture of the host-rocks is brittle during the vein-forming process. It is suggested that this type of HP veins is precipitated from the liquid formed by the dehydration of the host-rocks during the prograde metamorphism from blueschist to eclogite facies, which results in hydrofracturing of the rocks and provides the space for the vein to precipitate. The width of the eclogite-facies host-rocks is usually 1–2 cm, which provides the direct evidence that the fluid flow is on centimeter-scale.

79. Rapid Detection of Uropathogens Using an Integrated Multiplex Digital Nucleic Acid Detection Assay Powered by a Digital-to-Droplet Microfluidic Device

Abstract

The digital nucleic acid detection assay features the capability of absolute quantitation without the need for calibration, thereby facilitating the rapid identification of pathogens. Although several integrated digital nucleic acid detection techniques have been developed, there are still constraints in terms of automation and analysis throughput. To tackle these challenges, this study presents a digital-to-droplet microfluidic device comprising a digital microfluidics (DMF) module at the bottom and a droplet microfluidics module at the top. Following sample introduction, the extraction of nucleic acid and the dispensation of nucleic acid elution for mixing with the multiple amplification reagents are carried out in the DMF module. Subsequently, the reaction droplets are transported to the sample inlet of the droplet microfluidic module via a liquid outlet, and then droplet generation in four parallel units within the droplet microfluidics module is actuated by negative pressure generated by a syringe vacuum. The digital-to-droplet microfluidic device was employed to execute an integrated multiplex digital droplet nucleic acid detection assay (imDDNA) incorporating loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP). This assay was specifically designed to enable simultaneous detection of four uropathogens, namely, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Enterococcus faecalis. The entire process of the imDDNA is completed within 75 min, with a detection range spanning 5 orders of magnitude (9.43 × 10–2.86 × 104copies μL–1). The imDDNA was employed for the detection of batched clinical specimens, showing a consistency of 91.1% when compared with that of the conventional method. The imDDNA exhibits simplicity in operation and accuracy in quantification, thus offering potential advantages in achieving rapid pathogen detection.

Abstract

Shaxi porphyry Cu-Au deposit was one of the important discoveries of the exploration in the middle-lower reaches of Yangtze River in China in 1970’s. Gold occurrence in the Shaxi porphyry copper-gold deposit (central Anhui province, eastern China) was investigated by means of microscope analyses, EPMA and PIXE. Combined with geological and mineralogical methods, the characteristies of occurrence of gold in the large scale sulfide mineralization in this region were fully investigated. The results show that gold distributes in both chalcopyrite and pyrite as submicroscopic inclusions (less than 1 µm). Au is positively correlated with As, Fe, S, Cu, Zn and Ti. The condition of gold transformation in thermal fluid system controlling deposition of Au in the region is probably the oxidation potential of the red sedimentary rocks of shale and fine grain sandstone which may be crucial as a geochemical barrier to the reducing fluid. This study lays foundation for the further research and exploration of the porphyry copper-gold deposit both theoretically and practically in the lower reaches of Yangtze region.

Abstract

Since the mid-late Eocene, North China has been subjected to extensional stress, resulting in the formation and development of basins. The dynamic origin of this crustal extension has long been an issue of debate. This paper presents the results of kinematic analyses of faults obtained from two seperated areas in North China. In the Weihe graben situated on the southernmost margin of the Ordos block, analyses of fault kinematics were coupled with an analysis of the basin's subsidence history. Three successive extensional tectonic phases accompaning the basin's formation and development have been distinguished. The Palaeogene extension was oriented in a WNW-ESE direction; the Neogene extension in a NE-SW direction and the Pliocene-Quaternary extension in a NW-SE direction. Such changes have also been recorded by fault kinematics along the southern Tanlu fault zone. This has been demonstrated by three successive sets of fault striations indicating normal dip slip resulting from NW-SE extension, then left-lateral slip with a normal component resulting from NE-SW extension, and right-lateral slip with a minor normal component, respectively. The kinematic history of faults and their chronological evolution indicate changes in continental dynamics acting in North China over Cenozoic time.

For a corpus-based Mandarin text-to-speech system, the quality of synthesized speech is highly affected by the accuracy of unit boundaries. In this paper, we proposed a hybrid model method for automatic segmentation of Mandarin text-to-speech corpus. The boundaries of acoustic units are categorized into eleven phonetic groups. For a given phonetic group of boundaries, the proposed method selects an appropriate model from initial-final monophone-based HMM, semi-syllable monophone-based HMM and initial-final triphone-based HMM. Abstract

The Zhangbaling Tectonic Belt (ZTB) is located in eastern Anhui province, adjacent to the Tan-Lu fault zone to the W and the Lower and Middle Yangtze River metallogenic zone to the E. Two types of gold deposits: (1) altered-tectonite gold and (2) quartz-vein gold are present in the ZTB. Three ranges of homogenization temperatures (Th) were obtained by fluid inclusion investigations of the altered-tectonite gold deposits: 115-165°C, 235-275°C, and 335-395°C; and of the quartz-vein gold deposits: 145-195°C, 205-255°C, and 255-335°C, respectively. δD values of the ore-forming fluids range from -52.2‰ to -75.3‰, and their isotopic compositions calculated from quartz analytical data show negative δ18O values (-6.3-0.1‰) for the quartz-vein gold deposits. The calculated δ18O values of water are evidently lower than magmatic water, and probably were derived from mixtures of magmatic and meteoric water. Although the total rare earth elements (REE) content of the quartz-vein gold ores are much lower than those of the spatially associated granites, their chondrite-normalized patterns are similar, indicating that ore-forming elements in the ZTB quartz-vein gold deposits probably were derived from the plutons. Ores from the altered-tectonite gold deposits show δEu values and chondrite-normalized REE patterns similar to those of the granites, indicating that ore-forming elements of the altered-tectonite gold deposits also were sourced in the Yanshanian plutons. The gold deposits in the ZTB are remarkably similar to those in the Jiaodong gold metallogenic province with regard to tectonic settings, mineralization-controlling factors, mineralization ages, and the ore-forming temperatures and the stable isotopic compositions. AbstractCoprinus comatus is an edible mushroom and its fermented product possesses antioxidant activity. In this study, to further enhance the antioxidant activity and improve the reusability of the strain, calcium alginate hydrogel was used as the carrier for embedding and immobilizing Coprinus comatus. The effects of CaCl2 concentration, sodium alginate concentration, microsphere diameter, and the amount of magnetic particle on the antioxidant activity of fermented products were investigated. The results showed that the magnetic immobilized microsphere prepared by 2.50% CaCl2, 2.00% sodium alginate and 0.50% Fe3O4 had the best fermentation antioxidant activity (EC50 was 0.43 ± 0.01 mg/mL) when the diameter was 5 mm, which increased by 24.56% compared to the initial activity. Besides, the microsphere showed strong reusability, the antioxidant activity was still better than the free strain after being used five times. This study not only enhanced the antioxidant activity of Coprinus comatus fermented product through immobilization, but also provided an effective method for microbial fermentation.
