We isolated eight polymorphic microsatellites from the neotropical tree Luehea seemannii for gene flow and genetic structure studies. We used a streptavidin subtractive enrichment technique to develop a library of CA/GT repeats. Eight loci were screened for diversity from 96 individuals from Barro Colorado Island (BCI) and neighbouring Gigante peninsula in Panama. Luehea seemannii shows moderate levels of genetic diversity within these two populations. Allelic richness ranged from four to nine alleles and averaged 6.44 alleles per locus. Average expected heterozygosity was 0.65 on BCI and 0.60 on Gigante. Results are compared to microsatellite data from another wind-dispersed gap colonizing species common in Panama. We isolated 10 microsatellite loci for Jacaranda copaia for direct measurement of seed and pollen movement within the 50 ha Forest Dynamics Plot on Barro Colorado Island, Panama, and for studies of population genetic structure and gene flow across the Isthmus of Panama. Enriched repeat libraries were screened for microsatellite repeats and polymorphic primer pairs were developed. A total of 110 adult individuals were screened for allelic diversity and loci showed high levels of heterozygosity. These loci show both high maternal and paternal exclusion probabilities. Background: The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree culminates in the DNP project, a scholarly project aimed at enhancing health care systems aligned with national standards. While DNP projects are valued, they pose challenges due to resource-intensive demands including faculty time and effort., Problem: Faculty workload models related to DNP projects have not kept pace with increasing enrollment and program expectations., Approach: Consistent with national standards, a large public university convened a task force to examine faculty workload relative to DNP projects and to devise a more equitable and realistic model., Outcomes: Task force output led to the creation of the Collaborative Section-Based Faculty Workload Model that resulted in increases in faculty satisfaction, retention, and student mentorship, while maintaining DNP project rigor., Conclusions: The Collaborative Section-Based Faculty Workload Model responds to the challenge of balancing DNP project oversight with increasing time demands on faculty and increasing enrollment., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflicts of interest., (Copyright © 2024 Wolters Kluwer Health, Inc. Abstract: Simulation has been shown to improve communication and psychometric skills in advanced practice nursing students. Little is known about the impact of a simulation educational intervention with a faculty-facilitated debriefing on the preparation of novice nurse practitioner students for their first clinical practicum. This article describes the development of an educational intervention to accomplish this. The simulation education intervention was implemented with preclinical nurse practitioner students designed to improve their preparation for their first precepted clinical experience. Students were surveyed preintervention and postintervention to explore their self-perception of confidence and preparation for clinicals looking at six domains: health history, physical examination, diagnostics, differentials, final diagnosis, and plan of care. Quantitative results were statistically significant for each domain. Qualitative findings gave deeper insight into the students' perceptions of how the intervention prepared them for clinicals. Abstract: Opioid overdose deaths remain a major public health concern in the United States and led to the recent changes in regulations that allow nurse practitioners (NPs) to prescribe buprenorphine without the previously required Drug Addiction Treatment Act waiver. Previously, waiver requirements included 24 hours of opioid use disorder (OUD) and medications for OUD (MOUD) training. Although this training is no longer required, NPs need education related to providing nonstigmatizing care to individuals with OUD and safe MOUD prescribing practices. A combination of online didactic modules, in-person simulation activities, and experiential learning was provided to psychiatric mental health NP (PMHNP) and family NP (FNP) students enrolled in a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program. OUD was presented through a chronic care lens to normalize treatment and decrease stigma, and harm reduction principles were included to increase safe prescribing of MOUD. Fifty-six students completed the didactic training, 51 students participated in the simulation, and 11 students completed shadowing experiences with an experienced MOUD provider. Background: To understand family nurse practitioner (FNP) students' academic experience during the COVID-19 pandemic, faculty developed an online reflective discussion board assignment. The richness of the responses prompted faculty to gather data and analyze themes., Method: The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the perspectives of FNP students regarding the impact of COVID-19 on their academic experience. Participants were asked to answer four open-ended questions in a discussion board to address the research question. Responses of consenting students were analyzed qualitatively using open, axial, and selective coding., Results: Four main themes emerged: worry and fear, cyclical stress, mitigation of stress, and personal growth of resilience and empathy. Students emphasized that faculty support strategies mitigated stress and anxiety., Conclusion: Understanding students' experience is crucial to facilitating academic success. When Darwin visited the Galapagos archipelago, he observed that, in spite of the islands' physical similarity, members of species that had dispersed to them recently were beginning to diverge from each other. He postulated that these divergences must have resulted primarily from interactions with sets of other species that had also diverged across these otherwise similar islands. By extrapolation, if Darwin is correct, such complex interactions must be driving species divergences across all ecosystems. However, many current general ecological theories that predict observed distributions of species in ecosystems do not take the details of between-species interactions into account. Here we quantify, in sixteen forest diversity plots (FDPs) worldwide, highly significant negative density-dependent (NDD) components of both conspecific and heterospecific between-tree interactions that affect the trees' distributions, growth, recruitment, and mortality. These interactions decline smoothly in significance with increasing physical distance between trees. They also tend to decline in significance with increasing phylogenetic distance between the trees, but each FDP exhibits its own unique pattern of exceptions to this overall decline. Unique patterns of between-species interactions in ecosystems, of the general type that Darwin postulated, are likely to have contributed to the exceptions. We test the power of our null-model method by using a deliberately modified data set, and show that the method easily identifies the modifications. We examine how some of the exceptions, at the Wind River (USA) FDP, reveal new details of a known allelopathic effect of one of the Wind River gymnosperm species. Finally, we explore how similar analyses can be used to investigate details of many types of interactions in these complex ecosystems, and can provide clues to the evolution of these interactions., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.
