Abstract

Matching of particle-size distribution (PSD) and further blending of cowpea paste made from dry milled seeds are used as tool for producing akara of comparable quality to the traditional West African wet-milled product. The conclusion states that dry milled meal can be used to produce akara that is comparable in quality to that made by the traditional wet milling process.

Abstract

The magnetic properties and microstructure of ultrathin Co films grown on a Si(111)-7×7 surface were investigated. The experimental results observed by surface magneto-optic Kerr effect (SMOKE) and scanning tunneling microscopy show that the surface morphological evolution of x ML (monolayer) Co/Si(111) films is strongly related to their magnetic properties. Due to the formation of a CoSi2 layer, no magnetic signal could be detected by SMOKE for x=2.1. Both longitudinal and polar hysteresis loops appear for 4.2–8.5 ML Co/Si(111) films because of their rougher surfaces. When the Co thickness is increased to 11 ML, a magnetic hysteresis loop only occurs in the longitudinal configuration, which can be attributed to the contribution of volume anisotropy. After annealing an 11 ML Co/Si(111) film at 400 and 500 K, the surface becomes rougher, inducing magnetic anisotropy on the polar configuration. When the annealing temperature was increased to 600 K, however, the Co could react with Si to form a nonmagnetic cobalt silicide compound, and consequently, the hysteresis loops disappeared. Abstract

Heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems in commercial buildings consume the largest amount of energy. Recent surge in energy cost necessitates constant re-evaluation of HVAC system for most of the buildings. The objective of this study is to present the strategic approach on energy saving analysis of the HVAC system and chiller sizing optimization for a library building. Energy modeling code (eQUEST) for buildings simulation has been applied to verify and predict the long-term energy consumption of HVAC systems. To improve the accuracy of simulation results, the actual performance curves of the chillers and pumps were the inputs of curve fitting data from on-site field measurements data. Energy consumption data acquisition from the building energy management system (BEMS) for one year has been conducted comprehensively to calibrate energy modeling and to quantify energy saving results. The results revealed good agreement between energy modeling and BEMS data with the error of less than 10%. Besides, energy savings through the chillers’ sizing based on cooling load profile could be achieved satisfactorily by utilizing energy modeling by using the actual chiller performance curve. The energy saving for HVAC system can be obtained satisfactorily at the saving of 110,362 kWh per year. It is expected that the study will stimulate a more robust investigation of energy-efficient and cost-effective HVAC system specific for library buildings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Microstructural differences between unbruised and bruised apple tissues were evaluated. Cell connections appeared to be looser in bruised tissue than in unbruised tissue. Bruised tissue exhibited more empty regions which are not occupied by cells than unbruised tissue. Empty reg ions in unbruised and bruised tissues were about 0.7 and 2.4 per mm2, respectively, comprising 0.7% and 2.7% of the respective total volume. Stereology is a body of mathematical methods relating three-dimensional parameters defining a structure to two- dimensional measurements. Two methods based on a stereological principle were also used to quantify the fraction of total volume occupied by cells. In unbruised tissue, about 99.5% of the volume was occupied by cells compared to only 97.4% in bruised tissue. Both methods successfully quantifled microstructural differences between unbruised and bruised apple tissues.
