Background/Aims: As a source of hematopoietic stem cells, peripheral blood stem cells have been used more frequently in both malignant and non-malignant diseases. There are some difficulties in the collection of PBSC from children compared to adults such as vascular access and, extracorporeal circuit volume, especially in small children.Methods: In this study, we present our experience in 63 children who underwent peripheral blood stem cell collection and transplantation between November 2016 and September 2023. Results: The median age and weight of the children at the time of apheresis procedures were 10.25 years and 34 kg, respectively. Of 63 peripheral blood stem cell collection and transplantations, 48 were autologous and 15 were allogeneic. The median cell yield per apheresis procedure was 2.6 x 106 CD34+ cells/kg (0.6-9.66). Four of the total 63 patients and donors required multiple apheresis procedures. No significant side effects were observed after apheresis procedures. Conclusions: We observed that in experienced hands, peripheral blood stem cell collection and transplantation in children is at least as safe and effective as in adults.

Çalışmada, hicrî 2. asrın son yarısı ile 3. asrın ilk üçte birlik döneminde yaşayan, hakkında hem olumlu hem de olumsuz değerlendirmelerin yapıldığı Süleymân b. Dâvûd eş-Şâzekûnî’nin hadis ilmindeki yerinin tespit edilmesi amaçlanmıştır. Şâzekûnî, hadis meclislerinin ve rihlelerin yoğun bir şekilde yapıldığı bir dönemde yaşamış, ismi Yahyâ b. Maîn, Ali b. el-Medînî ve Ahmed b. Hanbel ile birlikte anılmıştır. Bir yandan “hâfız” olarak meşhur olmuşken diğer yandan cerh edilmiştir. Bu sebeple hakkında birbirine tezat oluşturan bilgi ve değerlendirmeler varit olmuştur. Şâzekûn kelimesi, Yemen’de bez ve büyük giysi ticaretiyle meşgul olanlara verilen bir addır. Süleymân b. Dâvûd babasının bu mesleğine izafeten Şâzekûnî nisbesiyle anılmıştır. O, Minkar b. Ubeyd b. Kays kabilesine mensup olduğu için el-Minkarî olarak da tanınmıştır. Basra’da doğup büyüdüğü için el-Basrî nisbesine de sahip olan Şâzekûnî’nin künyesi Ebû Eyyûb olup o, “hâfız” olarak şöhret bulmuştur. Şâzekûnî’nin vefat tarihi ve yeri hususunda ihtilaf edilmiştir. Bununla birlikte genel kabul gören görüşe, onun 234 yılında İsfahan’da vefat etmiş olduğu şeklindeki görüştür. Şâzekûnî’nin muasırları olan Abdürrezzâk, İbn Ebî Şeybe, Ebû Zür‘a ve daha başka muhaddisler onu; “ashâbü’l-hadis”, ahfezu’n-nâs, “ondan daha iyi hâfız görmedim” ve “hadis ilmini en iyi bilenimiz” olarak nitelemişlerdir. Şâzekûnî’nin hadis “hâfızı” olduğu tabakat kitaplarında da yer almıştır. İbn Sa‘d onun Basralı muhaddislerden sekizinci, Ebü’ş-Şeyh ise İsfahan muhaddislerinden beşinci tabakadan “hâfız” unvanıyla meşhur olduğunu kaydetmiştir. Zehebî, onu nadir yetişen; Süyûtî de hadisin bablarını ve inceliklerini en iyi bilen bir hâfız olarak tabakatında tanıtmıştır. Şîa’nın hadis kaynaklarında da bir râvi olarak yer alan Şâzekûnî, ilmî meclislere katılıp müzakere yapmak ve hadis yazmak için Kûfe, Basra, Bağdat ve İsfahan’a birçok rihle yapmıştır. Kütüb-i Tis‘a müellifleri içerisinde sadece Ahmed b. Hanbel, Feḍâʾilü’ṣ-ṣaḥâbe adlı eserinde hocası İbrâhim b. Muhammed senediyle ondan iki rivayet nakletmiştir. Mevcut hadis kaynakları içinde Şâzekûnî’den doğrudan hadis rivayet eden Ebû Ya‘lâ el-Mevsılî’dir. Taberânî ondan en fazla rivayet aktaran muhaddistir. Rûyânî, Ebû Avâne, Harâitî, Tahâvî, Âcurrî, Hâkim en-Nîsâbûrî, Ebû Nuaym, Beyhakî ve daha başka muhaddisler eserlerinde ondan rivayetler nakletmişlerdir. Şâzekûnî’nin büyük tepki çeken; “Ümeyye oğulları rüyamda minberime çıkan maymunlar ve domuzlar şeklinde bana gösterildi ve bu benim çok zoruma gitti, bunun üzerine Kadir Sûresi indirildi.” gibi “metrûk” ve “batıl” rivayetleri bulunmaktadır. Ona ait meşhur olmuş “İlim kendisiyle hamama girdiğin şeyden başka bir şey değildir.” gibi sözleri kaynaklarda yerini almıştır. Muhaddislerden Şâzekûnî’yi tümden tevsîk eden, İbn Hibbân’dır. Yahyâ b. Maîn, Ahmed b. Hanbel, Buhârî, Ebû Hâtim, Nesâî ve daha başkaları başka sebeplerle onu “zayıf” kabul etmişlerdir. Yaşadığı süreç ile ilgili bilgi veren kaynakları “bütüncül bir bakışla” ele aldığımızda onun kendi döneminde bazı hususlarda temayüz ettiği, ilerleyen yıllarda bu vasıflarına halel gelecek tutumlar sergilediği, kitaplarını kaybettiği için ezberden hadis rivayetinde hatalar yaptığı, hakkındaki bazı suçlamaların ise bir iddia olmaktan öteye geçemediği, bilerek hadis uydurmadığı, vehm sahibi bir râvi olduğu ve rivayetlerinin “i‘tibar” için alınabileceği anlaşılmaktadır. Şâzekûnî’nin mütkın bir hâfız olarak kayıtlara geçmesi, onun tek başına adalet sahibi bir râvi olduğu anlamına gelmemektedir. Bir unvan olarak kullanılan bu kelime, ta‘dîl lafzı olabilmesi için “sikatün hâfızün”, “sikatün âkilun hâfızün” gibi râvinin güvenilir olduğunu belirten başka lafızlarla gelmelidir. Nitekim “hâfız” unvanıyla meşhur olduğu halde cerh edilen; Ebû Muâviye, Muhammed b. Yûnus el-Küdeymî ve Ebû Bişr Ahmed b. Muhammed el-Mus‘abî gibi râviler de vardır.

Bu çalışmada, İslâm hukukunun ibadetler bölümü içerisinde konu edinen, fukaha tarafından yer yer müstakil başlık altında incelenen istihâre namazına ilişkin ileri sürülen bazı hükümler nitel araştırma ve istidlâl yöntemleri kullanılarak ele alınmıştır. İstihâre namazı hakkında varit olan birtakım rivâyetlerde Hz. Peygamber’in –kendisi kılmamasına rağmen- sahâbîlere söz konusu namazı tavsiye ettiği görülmüştür. Binaenaleyh istihâre namazının meşruiyeti, şer‘î deliller içerisinde sünnete dayanmaktadır. Meşrûiyeti hususunda herhangi bir hilaf söz konusu olmamasına rağmen istihâre namazına dair rivâyet edilen birtakım nasların senedinin tenkite tabi tutulduğu, ilgili naslarda yer alan bazı kavramların da te’vile açık olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Bu ve benzeri hususlar, istihâre namazının hükmü yanında istihâre namazının rekât sayısı, istihâre duasının nerede okunacağı, hangi işler hakkında uygulanabilir olduğu, namaz kılınması mekruh sayılan vakitlerde kılınıp kılınamayacağı gibi bazı fıkhî meselelerin ortaya çıkmasına yol açmıştır. Bu durum ise, doktrin içerisinde kayda değer muhtelif görüş ve fikirlerin tezahür etmesine sebebiyet vermiştir. Dolayısıyla ele alınan bu çalışmada müctehidlerin istihâre namazı ve buna taalluk eden bazı fıkhî meselelere dair ileri sürdükleri görüşler, olabildiğince delilleriyle birlikte sunulmuş; meselelere ilişkin serdedilen rivâyetler cerh ve ta‘dîl açısından tahlil edilerek mezkûr konular bir bütünlük içerisinde incelenmeye çalışılmıştır.

This study investigates how monotheistic religions depict God with masculine or feminine attributes, considering historical context. The issue arises from questioning the portrayal of a masculine God within these religions, influenced by a patriarchal socio-cultural backdrop. Instances mainly from Christianity and lesser from Judaism and Islam, the study analyzes the characteristics of religious theological language used in the depiction of God. In this context, we explore the linguistic challenge encountered by religious traditions when employing anthropomorphic language. Since the core issue revolves around expressing and labeling the divine, the paper initiates with a conceptual examination of God’s characterization as either masculine or feminine. In this analysis, tracing back historically, archaeological and anthropological evidence indicates that language used to describe God was initially predominantly feminine. Feminist perspectives contend that over time, particularly within monotheistic religions, this language has become masculine and that this historical shift has been a major factor in the social and cultural exclusion of women. Against this claim, the study aims to substantiate the claim that despite the effective historical dominance of the theological masculine language, the feminine divine image persists in both theistic and non-theistic traditions. Both the Holy Scriptures and early theological writings occasionally employ feminine language when discussing God, although less frequently than masculine language. Within this context, anthropomorphic depictions of God in the Holy Books of monotheistic religions—where God is perceived as an immaterial being—are interpreted metaphorically, analogically, or symbolically. In particular, the mystical traditions of these religions have emphasized feminine qualities more intensely in their depiction of the divine. They portray God not only as a father or male figure but also with feminine attributes, such as a mother, lover, or friend. These traditions contend that qualities like divine beauty and mercy find their fullest expression in women and the feminine manifestation of existence. Notably, the Nag Hammadi tradition, rooted in Jewish mysticism, highlights the feminine dimensions of the divine, emphasizing love and compassion. Medieval Christian mystics such as Meister Eckhart and Julian of Norwich also emphasized the feminine dimension of God in their experience of the divine. Similarly, within Islamic Sufism, influenced by the Our’an’s balance and harmony of tanzih(exoneratin God from human attributes) and tashbih (drawing similitude) the Ibn Arabi tradition, emphasizing the feminine portrayal of the divine. They recognized the divine presence within the feminine elements of creation. Additionally, a lesser-known figure, Molla al-Jaziri, dealt extensively with the theme of woman as a divine mirror. This study aimed aligns with the feminist theological approach, advocating for the reinterpretation of theological and religious language in order to liberate it from the dominance of a patriarchal language and reveal its feminine aspect. Additionally, study also suggests further research by examining specific time periods, approaches and individual scholars’ perspectives.

Bu çalışma, günümüz toplumunun dinamikleri içinde bireylerin yaşadığı belirsizlik, değişim hızı, stres ve kaygı gibi durumlar karşısında ortaya çıkan yeni dini ve spiritüel arayışları ve bu arayışların mutluluk endüstrisi ile nasıl ilişkilendirildiğini ele almaktadır. Spiritüel hareketlerin performans toplumunda ticarileşerek eğlence ahlakının ve mutluluk endüstrisinin bir parçası haline geldiği bu çalışmanın temel iddiasıdır. Modernleşmeyle beraber yaşanan hızlı değişim ve dönüşüm bireylerin iç dünyasında baş etmekte zorlandıkları çeşitli sorunlar yaratmaktadır. Özellikle sekülerleşme tartışmalarıyla günümüz dünyasının dinden arındırılması çabaları bireyleri farklı arayışlara itmektedir. Bu amaçla da belirsizlik ve değişim karşısında, bireyler yeni dini ve spiritüel arayışlara yönelerek içsel huzur ve doyuma ulaşmaya çalışmaktadır. Kişisel gelişim, spiritüellik ve mutluluk endüstrisi, bireylerin hayat kalitesini artırma arayışı ve içsel doyum hedefiyle yakından ilişkilenmekte ve mutluluk endüstrisinin büyümesine ve yayılmasına olanak sağlamaktadır. Mutluluk endüstrisi, bireylerin yaşamlarına anlam ve amaç katma, stres ve kaygılarını azaltma, öz farkındalıklarını artırma ve manevi açıdan doyum sağlama gibi vaatlerle pazarlanmakta ve modern toplumun belirsizlik ve rekabet ortamı içinde yaşayan bireylerin ilgisini çekmektedir. Bu bağlamda, makale, mutluluk endüstrisinin bireyleri performans odaklı içsel huzur ve doyuma ulaştırma çabalarını detaylı bir şekilde değerlendirmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Performans toplumu, mutluluk endüstrisi ve eğlence ahlakı gibi temel kuramlar kullanılarak, bu çabalar teorik bir çerçeve içinde kapsamlı bir şekilde analiz edilecektir. Performans toplumu kuramı, günümüzde bireylerin sosyal ve ekonomik başarılarına odaklanan bir kültürde yaşadıklarını savunur ve bireylerin sürekli olarak başarıya ulaşma ve mükemmeliyeti elde etme baskısı altında olduklarını vurgular. Bu bağlamda, mutluluk endüstrisinin bireyleri performansın ötesinde bir içsel huzur ve doyuma ulaştırmak için nasıl bir çaba sarf ettiğini anlamak, performans toplumu kuramının perspektifinden önemli bir analiz sunacaktır. Mutluluk endüstrisi, günümüzde yaygın olarak benimsenen eğlence ahlakıyla da bağlantılıdır. Eğlence ahlakı, bireylerin yaşamlarını daha keyifli hale getirmek adına sürekli bir arayış içinde oldukları bir yaklaşımı ifade eder. Mutluluk endüstrisinin bireylere sunulan ürün ve hizmetleri, eğlence ahlakı çerçevesinde nasıl konumlandırdığı ve bireylerin yaşamlarına nasıl anlam kattığı daha geniş bir teorik perspektiften ele alınması gereken bir konudur. Bu bağlamda, endüstrinin potansiyel riskleri ve bireyler üzerindeki olası negatif etkileri, performans toplumu ve eğlence ahlakı kuramları üzerinden incelenecektir. Literatürde, mutluluk endüstrisi, eğlence ahlakı ve spiritüel hareketler arasındaki ilişkiyi irdeleyen çalışmaların eksikliği göze çarpmakta, çalışma, tam da bu alanlar arasındaki ilişkiyi ele alması açısından literatürdeki boşluğu doldurmayı, mutluluk endüstrisinin bireylerin içsel potansiyellerini keşfetmelerine yardımcı olup olamayacağını, aynı zamanda bireyleri kendi içsel değerlerini görmezden gelmeyi ve performans baskısı altında tutmaya yönlendiren faktörleri anlamayı amaçlamaktadır. Çalışmada, bireylerin modern yaşamın zorluklarına nasıl yanıt verdikleri ve mutluluk endüstrisinin bu süreçte oynadığı rolü anlamak için nitel bir yaklaşımla kapsamlı bir veri toplama ve analiz süreci temel alınmıştır. Literatür taraması ve eleştirel okumaların öne çıktığı çalışmanın sonunda mutluluk endüstrisinin spiritüel arayışları kullanarak bireyleri tüketici birer nesne haline getirdiği, bireyin kendisini eğlence ahlakına dayalı gündelik performanslar sergilemek zorunda hissettiği, spiritüel araçlara ulaşamamanın sosyal eşitsizliği derinleştirdiği ve mutlu olmamanın adeta bir suç olarak görüldüğü sonucuna varılmıştır.

Arap dilini her yönüyle inceleyen nahivcilerin üzerinde durdukları hususlardan biri de asıl ve fer‘ meselesidir. Çünkü Arap dil ilimlerinin tamamında asıl ve fer‘ nazariyesinin önemli bir etkisi vardır. Bunların başında ise nahiv ilmi gelmektedir. Zira ‘amel, i‘râb, binâ, mu‘reb ve mebnî gibi nahiv ilminin önemli konularında asıl ve fer‘ nazariyesi etkin bir biçimde yer almaktadır. Nitekim ‘amel bakımından fiilin asıl, harf ve ismin fer‘ olduğu ittifakla kabul edilmiştir. Çünkü fiilin fâile olan şiddetli ihtiyacı, onda zorunlu olarak ‘amel etmesini gerektirmiştir. Dolayısıyla hiçbir fiil fâilsiz olamadığı için her fiil mutlaka ref‘ ‘amelini yapar ve bu da onun ‘amelde asıl olmasını sağlamıştır. Fakat isim ve harf için aynı şey söylenemez. Ancak bazı isim ve harflerin fiil gibi ‘amel etmesi, fiile olan çeşitli benzerliklerinden kaynaklanmaktadır. Bu nedenle onların ‘ameli fer‘îdir. Aynı şekilde i‘râb, isimde aslî fakat fiilde fer‘îdir. Zira i‘râbın asıl gayesi fâillik, mef‘ûlluk gibi temel gramatik anlamları birbirinden ayırt etmektir ve bu anlamlar ise sadece isimde meydana gelir. Bu yüzden isim i’râba zorunlu bir şekilde ihtiyaç duymuş ve i‘râb da isimde asıl kabul edilmiştir. Bazı fiillerin isim gibi i‘râb alması ise fer‘î bir durum olup çeşitli hususlarda isme olan benzerliğinden kaynaklanmaktadır. İ‘râbın Arapçadaki öneminden dolayı nahivciler, aldığı i‘râba göre isimleri; merfû‘ât, mansûbât, mecrûrât ve tevâbi şeklinde genel kısımlara ayırmışlardır. Bu genel başlıklara dâhil olan alt kısımlardan bazılarını asıl, diğerlerini ise fer‘ kabul etmişlerdir. Ancak hangilerinin asıl, hangilerinin fer‘ olduğu hususunda nahivciler arasında çeşitli ihtilaflar meydana gelmiştir. Ayrıca bir ögenin asıl kabul edilmesini sağlayan kriterlerin neler olduğu hususunda da görüş birliği bulunmamaktadır. Bu ihtilafların cereyan ettiği konulardan biri de mübteda, haber, fâil, nâib-i fâil gibi birçok isim grubunu kapsayan merfû‘ isimler konusudur. Çünkü bu isimlerden sadece biri ya da birkaçı merfû‘ olma hususunda asıl diğerleri ise fer‘dir. Nitekim bazı nahivciler mübtedayı asıl kabul etmişlerdir. Mübtedanın cümlenin başında yer alması ve haberden sonra getirilse dahi mübtedalığını yitirmemesi gibi bazı önemli özelliklerini kanıt olarak göstermişleridir. Buna karşılık bazı nahivciler ise fâilin asıl olduğu görüşünü savunmuşlardır. Bunların ileri sürdükleri en önemli argümanları ise; ‘âmil bakımından fâilin mübtedadan daha güçlü olması ve mübtedaya göre ref‘ i‘râbına daha fazla ihtiyaç duymasıdır. Zira fâili mef‘ûlden ayıran temel unsur ref‘ i‘râbıdır. Zaten i‘râbın asıl gayesi de ögeleri birbirinden ayırmaktır. Bu iki temel görüşün yanı sıra hem fâil hem de mübtedanın müsnedun ileyh olup içinde bulundukları cümlelerin de mahiyet bakımından birbirinden farklı olmalarını gerekçe göstererek aralarında asıl – fer‘ ilişkisinin olamayacağını ve bu nedenle her ikisinin de asıl olduğunu söyleyen nahivciler de vardır. Bu ihtilaflar eserlerin konu tertip metotlarına da yansımıştır. Nitekim merfû‘ isimler bâbında kimi müellifler mübtedayı kimileri ise fâili başa almıştır. Zira asıl olan ögeler genellikle diğerlerinden önce ele alınır. Asıl ve fer‘ nazariyesinin nahiv ilmindeki öneminden dolayı çalışmamızda mübteda ile fâilin asaleti çerçevesinde meydana gelen ihtilaflar ve buna dair öne sürülen deliller değerlendirilmiştir.

Objective: Abnormal localization of the placenta with complete or partial closure of the cervix is called placenta previa. Placenta previa occurs in approximately 0.3-0.5% of pregnancies. In this study, we aimed to determine the risk factors and adverse fetal outcomes by comparing the neonatal outcomes of patients who underwent cesarean section for placenta previa with those of patients who underwent cesarean section for other indications. Method: Patients with singleton pregnancies diagnosed with placenta previa were retrospectively analyzed. Placenta previa, risk factors, and adverse neonatal outcomes were estimated using multivariate logistic regression models. Results: A total of 61,110 deliveries were analyzed, and 632 deliveries (288 patients, 344 controls) were included in the study. The prevalence of placenta previa was 0.47%. Advanced maternal age [odds ratio (OR)=3.03], multigravida (≥5) (OR=2.31), previous abortion (OR=1.58) and curettage (OR=2.32) were significant risk factors for placenta previa. However, these patients had an increased risk of 1st minute Apgar score 37 weeks gestational age group with placenta previa were more likely to have a lower birth weight (OR=4.21) and an Apgar score

Strong coupling between resonantly matched surface plasmons of metals and excitons of quantum emitters results in the formation of new plasmon-exciton hybridized energy states. In plasmon-exciton strong coupling, plasmonic nanocavities play a significant role due to their ability to confine light in an ultrasmall volume. Additionally, two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) have a significant exciton binding energy and remain stable at ambient conditions, making them an excellent alternative for investigating light-matter interactions. As a result, strong plasmon-exciton coupling has been reported by introducing a single metallic cavity. However, single nanoparticles have lower spatial confinement of electromagnetic fields and limited tunability to match the excitonic resonance. Here, we introduce the concept of catenary-shaped optical fields induced by plasmonic metamaterial cavities to scale the strength of plasmon-exciton coupling. The demonstrated plasmon modes of metallic metamaterial cavities offer high confinement and tunability and can match with the excitons of TMDCs to exhibit a strong coupling regime by tuning either the size of the cavity gap or thickness. The calculated Rabi splitting of Au-MoSe2 and Au-WSe2 heterostructures strongly depends on the catenary-like field enhancement induced by the Au cavity, resulting in room-temperature Rabi splitting ranging between 77.86 and 320 meV. These plasmonic metamaterial cavities can pave the way for manipulating excitons in TMDCs and operating active nanophotonic devices at ambient temperature.

Abstract Background: Pain is globally prevalent, affecting quality of life and driving most people to seek medical care. Nurses are essential for pain assessment and treatment. Adequate nursing awareness, attitudes, and skills are vital for optimal management. This study investigates nurses' awareness and practice toward pain assessment and management as the fifth vital sign in Sudan. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional, hospital-based study. Convenience sampling was performed to collect information from nurses working at four government hospitals using a self-administered questionnaire 24 November 2020 and 18 April 2021. The study utilized descriptive and inferential statistics for data analysis. Results: A total of 393 registered nurses participated in this study. Most (66.7%) were women, 46.6% were aged 20–25 years, and 69.2% had a bachelor degree. More than half of the nurses had low awareness of pain assessment (51.7%) and management practices (53.7%). A weak positive correlation was observed between awareness and practice (r = 0.280, P = 0.000). Women nurses showed a higher awareness (204.80, P = 0.048). Nurses with a high level of education showed higher awareness (249.32, P = 0.031) and higher practice (272.00, P = 0.029). Nurses working in the critical care unit performed significantly better than others (234.61, P = 0.001). Conclusion: There is a low level of awareness regarding pain assessment and management practices. This study suggests the need for more research and training programs, especially for nurses with low educational levels.

Introduction The underlying factors of oral squamous cell cancers (OSCC) have been elucidated, but studies have focused little on etiological differences in affected oral cavity sites. The aim of this retrospective study was to clarify the role of carcinogen exposure in OSCC of different oral cavity areas. Methods A cross-sectional study of patients with primary OSCC was conducted retrospectively, based on patient records from Helsinki University Hospital, Finland, between January 2016 and December 2020. The patients’ self-reported history of tobacco smoking and alcohol use was explained by tumor site, age, sex, tumor size, and lymph node status in a logistic regression model. The information on smoking and alcohol use was compiled from a patient background form. Results In 519 patients, tumors occurred most often in the tongue (51%), gingiva (21%), or floor of the mouth (FOM; 15%). Background: Physical exercise helps to mitigate cardiovascular risks in people with diabetes mellitus (DM), but there are limited data in Nigeria. This study aimed to assess cardiovascular risk awareness, exercise practices and metabolic outcomes among Nigerians with diabetes. Materials and Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study at five tertiary hospitals using questionnaire interviews and clinical assessments. Participants’ knowledge of cardiovascular risk factors and knowledge of exercise were assessed on 12- and 5-item scores, while exercise practices were classed as adequate if performed regularly on 3 or more days weekly for a total of 150 min or more based on the American Diabetes Association recommendations. Mean body mass index (BMI), blood pressure (BP), fasting blood glucose, serum haemoglobin A1C (HbA1c), lipid profile, urea, creatinine and uric acid were then compared among participant groups. Results: We studied 426 participants with DM, 58.7% females. The mean age was 52.9 ± 13.1 years, with males significantly older than females (54.6 ± 12.2 vs. 51.8 ± 13.5 years; 95% confidence interval: 0.27–5.28, P = 0.03). The mean age at diabetes diagnosis was 44.8 ± 11.7 years, and the median duration of diabetes was 84 months. There was low knowledge of cardiovascular risk factors and low knowledge of exercise (mean scores of 2.94 and 2.31, respectively). Forty-three per cent of participants reported adequate exercise, which was significantly associated with younger age (P = 0.007), male gender (P = 0.001) and formal education (P = 0.021). Participants with adequate exercise had lower systolic BP and serum urea compared to those with inadequate exercise, but there were no significant differences in BMI, fasting glucose, HbA1c, serum lipids, creatinine or uric acid. Conclusion: Participants had low knowledge of cardiovascular risks and the appropriate exercise practices for diabetes patients. There is a need for better patient education on diabetes self-care and exercise at clinic visits.

Background: The world over, women are victims of violence in close and intimate relationships where they are expected to be safe and protected. Intimate partner violence (IPV) significantly impacts the physical and mental well-being of those affected. This study assessed the prevalence, pattern and effects of IPV amongst women in Abeokuta South Local Government Area (LGA) of Ogun State, South West Nigeria. Materials and Methods: This community-based cross-sectional study was carried out in Abeokuta – South LGA in Ogun State. Data were collected from 339 women in intimate relationships using a structured interviewer-administered questionnaire. Ethical approval (HPRS/381/471) was obtained from the Ogun State Ministry of Health Ethical Review Committee. Analysis was done using IBM® SPSS version 23, and results were presented in frequencies and proportions using tables and charts. Results: About three-quarters (73.2%) of the 339 respondents had experienced one form of IPV. Psychological/emotional violence, 224 (66.1%), and physical violence, 161 (47.5%), were the study’s most commonly reported forms of violence. Amongst those affected, 186 (54.9%) were ‘insulted’, 87 (25.7%) were ‘embarrassed in public’ and another 124 (36.6%) were slapped. The effects of IPV reported were bruises/lacerations, unwanted pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections and attempted suicide. Conclusion: The prevalence of IPV of all forms were high in the studied population. Therefore, the government needs to create more awareness of the problem and promote investments in women’s empowerment to reverse this trend.

The proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) devices introduces significant challenges in network security and scalability. Software-Defined Networking (SDN) emerges as a promising framework to offer more flexible and intelligent network management capabilities. This paper delves into the integration of SDN principles within an IoT environment to bolster security and scalability. Through a proof-of-concept deployment utilizing the Floodlight controller and Mininet-WiFi, the approach involves the collection and analysis of data on average latency, packet loss, throughput, and jitter to evaluate network performance. Additionally, Python scripts and Wireshark are employed for an in-depth network analysis. The findings illustrate that SDN integration can adeptly manage the augmented network load, evidenced by minimal increases in latency and packet loss, while maintaining acceptable throughput and jitter levels. Furthermore, the Floodlight controller's capability to identify and counter Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks underscores its potential to enhance IoT network security. The results affirm that SDN can significantly elevate the scalability and security of IoT networks, presenting a viable solution to manage the escalating demands of IoT deployments. Future endeavors will aim to extend the network scale and investigate alternative SDN controllers to substantiate the scalability of the conclusions.

Generation Z faces diverse challenges in education amidst the swift evolution of technology. This study investigates the factors shaping Generation Z's acceptance and adoption of AI and Cloud-based applications in Oman's higher education sector. Despite limited attention to this area in Oman and the Gulf Cooperative Council countries (GCC), this research addresses the gap by employing the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) framework, recognized for its effectiveness in understanding technology adoption. Through a quantitative approach, Generation Z students in Omani higher education institutions were surveyed, and SmartPLS was utilized for analysis. Results indicate a significant positive relationship between all UTAUT antecedent factors, with Performance Expectancy being non-significant. This study offers novel insights into global understandings of Generation Z's learning trends with AI and Cloud-based applications in higher education, aiming to enhance pedagogical approaches. Notably, it pioneers such efforts within the GCC context. Recommendations for similar research in other GCC countries are provided to enrich regional perspectives. Limitations and future directions are addressed, emphasizing the importance of comprehending Generation Z's interaction with technology to advance educational practices in the digital age. The dynamics of plant-herbivore interactions are essential for understanding ecosystem stability and resilience. This article investigated the effects of incorporating a harvesting effect on the dynamics of a discrete-time plant-herbivore system. An analysis was performed to determine the existence and stability of fixed points. In addition, studies have shown that the system experienced transcritical, period-doubling, and Neimark-Sacker bifurcations. Moreover, we provided numerical simulations to substantiate our theoretical results. Our research indicated that harvesting in excessive amounts may have negative effects on the populations of both plants and herbivores. However, when harvesting was done at moderate levels, it promoted the coexistence and stability of both populations. The findings of our analysis provided a deep understanding of the intricate dynamics of ecological systems and underscored the need to use sustainable harvesting methods for the management and preservation of ecosystems.

Roller-compacted concrete pavement (RCCP) is a brittle material with low tensile strength that does not contain steel or dowel bars. This, in addition to the rigidity of the RCCP, causes degradation or cracking before the RCCP reaches its service life. To improve the performance of the RCCP, crumb rubber (CR) can be used as an aggregate. Hence, in this study, CR was used to replace 0, 10, 20, and 30% of the fine aggregate in the RCCP. To mitigate the adverse effect of the CR on the properties of the RCCP, nano-silica (NS) was added by weight of cement in proportions of 0, 1, 2, and 3%. To select an optimal mix based on various performance criteria, multicriteria-based optimization was carried out using techniques such as order of preference by similarity to ideal solution, evaluation based on distance from average solution, weighted sum model, and weighted product model techniques. During experimentation, CR improved the consistency and reduced the mechanical and durability properties of the RCCP, while NS reduced the consistency and improved the mechanical and durability performance of the RCCP. The M2 mix (mix containing 0% CR and 1% NS) is consistently ranked as the best choice for multi-criteria decision-making techniques and sensitivity analyses due to its exceptional physical, mechanical, and durability attributes, ensuring reliability across various decision-making scenarios. This study provides insights into the decision-making process for the choice of appropriate RCCP mix produced with CR and NS for improved performance in pavement applications and the importance of utilizing waste tire rubber in concrete pavements to promote sustainability.

The current paper included studying the effects of soft storey locations on dynamic response of reinforced concrete (RC) buildings under the impacts of earthquakes. Soft storey is essential to provide the building with a functional space such as vehicle garages or open meeting rooms. Further analytical investigation was necessary to understand the impact of these flexible floors on the building's response during earthquakes, as conducting experimental research to address this issue is highly difficult. The research encompassed the effects of soft storey location in two types of buildings, one with equal spans and the other with unequal spans, on the nonlinear time history response. Each building consists of a 10-stories (G+9) RC residential structure subjected to earthquake effects. The analysis was carried out using program sap2000 v23. An analogous diagonal strut was used to illustrate the infill panels. The study included the effect of soft storeys on the natural period, the change in base shear with time, and the change of displacement and acceleration along time for each building. The obtained results showed that including a soft storey in the analysis for buildings having either equal or unequal spans increased the time period, displacement, and storey drift, causing a decrease in the acceleration and base shear forces. Building with the soft storey on the fifth floor (at the mid-height of the building) showed a better dynamic response compared with that using the soft storey on the ground and last floors.

Abstract Background Children with congenital heart diseases (CHD) may have developmental delays including delayed language development (DLD) and learning difficulties. The purpose of this study was to observe the effects of CHD on language developmental profile and scholastic achievement (SA) with particular emphasis on prevalence of DLD and SA, potential risks, and need for early intervention. Results This case–control study included 158 children with CHD and 145 healthy children as controls. Participants’ ages ranged from 6 months to 15 years. Data were collected by reviewing clinical records and questionnaires covering potential risks, motor and language development, and SA. Potential risks were analyzed using the Fisher test, while language development and SA were compared using Mann–Whitney test. Abstract Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a frequent cause of cancer-related mortality in the Palestinian population. This cross-sectional study was conducted from July 2019 to March 2020 and examined attitudes toward CRC and colonoscopy, as well as the interplay between both. Participants were recruited using convenience sampling from public spaces, governmental hospitals, and primary healthcare centers across 11 governorates in Palestine. Displaying a positive attitude was defined as agreeing on at least the median number of questions related to CRC (5 of 11 questions) or colonoscopy (6 of 10 questions). A total of 4623 participants were included. Most participants agreed that ‘early detection of CRC increases the possibility of more effective treatment’ (n = 4161, 89.7%). Similarly, the majority of participants agreed on ‘preferring a physician with a gender similar to the participants to perform the colonoscopy’ (n = 3738, 80.9%) and ‘willingness to have colonoscopy even if the participant had to pay for it’ (n = 3727, 80.6%). Furthermore, 3115 participants (67.4%) demonstrated positive attitudes toward CRC, while 2540 participants (55.0%) displayed similar attitudes toward colonoscopy. Participants from the West Bank and Jerusalem were more likely than those from the Gaza Strip to display positive attitudes toward colonoscopy (59.2% vs. 48.9%). Participants with positive attitudes toward CRC were more likely to also display positive attitudes toward colonoscopy and vice versa. About two thirds of study participants exhibited positive attitudes toward CRC, and 55.0% displayed positive attitudes toward colonoscopy. There was a reciprocal relationship between having positive attitudes toward CRC and colonoscopy.

Abstract In this study, the complete plastome sequence of Nigella sativa (black seed), was analyzed for the first time. The plastome spans approximately 154,120 bp, comprising four sections: the Large Single-Copy (LSC) (85,538 bp), the Small Single-Copy (SSC) (17,984 bp), and two Inverted Repeat (IR) regions (25,299 bp). A comparative study of N. sativa’s plastome with ten other species from various genera in the Ranunculaceae family reveals substantial structural variations. The contraction of the inverted repeat region in N. sativa influences the boundaries of single-copy regions, resulting in a shorter plastome size than other species. When comparing the plastome of N. sativa with those of its related species, significant divergence is observed, particularly except for N. damascena. Among these, the plastome of A. glaucifolium displays the highest average pairwise sequence divergence (0.2851) with N. sativa, followed by A. raddeana (0.2290) and A. coerulea (0.1222). Furthermore, the study identified 12 distinct hotspot regions characterized by elevated Pi values (> 0.1). These regions include trnH-GUG-psbA, matK-trnQ-UUG, psbK-trnR-UCU, atpF-atpI, rpoB-psbD, ycf3-ndhJ, ndhC-cemA, petA-psaJ, trnN-GUU-ndhF, trnV-GAC-rps12, ycf2-trnI-CAU, and ndhA-ycf1. Approximately, 24 tandem and 48 palindromic and forward repeats were detected in N. sativa plastome. The analysis revealed 32 microsatellites with the majority being mononucleotide repeats. In the N. sativa plastome, phenylalanine had the highest number of codons (1982 codons), while alanine was the least common amino acid with 260 codons. A phylogenetic tree, constructed using protein-coding genes, revealed a distinct monophyletic clade comprising N. sativa and N. damascene, closely aligned with the Cimicifugeae tribe and exhibiting robust support. This plastome provides valuable genetic information for precise species identification, phylogenetic resolution, and evolutionary studies of N. sativa.

Abstract Ternary oxides are currently emerging as promising materials for optoelectronic devices and spintronics, surpassing binary oxides in terms of their superior properties. Among these, zinc stannate (Zn2SnO4) stands out due to its stability and attractive physical characteristics. However, despite its outstanding attributes, there is a need to further develop its magnetic properties for spintronic applications. In this study, Ni-doped Zn2SnO4 thin films were synthesized using the sol–gel method, and their magnetic characteristics were investigated for the first time. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the high crystallinity of the synthesized samples, even after the incorporation of Ni dopants, without any secondary phases. SEM imaging revealed the cubic structure morphology of the thin films. An increase in the bandgap, dependent on the Ni dopant concentration, was observed for doped zinc stannate, suggesting potential for tailored electronic properties. FTIR spectroscopy confirmed the presence of functional groups within the material. Notably, the magnetic properties of the thin films were analyzed using a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), revealing diamagnetic behavior for pure zinc stannate and ferromagnetic properties for Ni-doped Zn2SnO4, which increased with dopant concentration. Overall, the results highlight the excellent structural, optical, and ferromagnetic properties of Ni-doped Zn2SnO4 thin films, positioning them for diverse applications, particularly in optoelectronic and spintronic technology.

Abstract The profiles of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in selected heat-processed meat and fish were evaluated to determine the potential health risk associated with consumption. The samples were analysed using a gas Chromatography-Mass spectrometer. Different concentrations of individual PAHs were detected in the samples, with the smoked samples having the highest concentrations. The total PAHs (mg/kg) in smoked samples were 2.763 ± 0.185 (game meat), 1.618 ± 0.102 (mackerel fish), and 1.718 ± 0.129 (catfish), whereas levels (mg/kg) in grilled samples were 0.771 ± 0.049 (chicken) and 0.911 ± 0.053 (fish). The total carcinogenic PAH (PAH7) concentrations (mg/kg) in grilled chicken and fish and smoked (game meat, mackerel fish, and catfish) samples were 0.231, 0.294, 0.440, 0.309, and 0.332, while their total PAH8 concentrations were 0.356, 0.371, 0.537, 0.465, and 0.476 respectively. The non-carcinogenic PAH risk estimations, both individually (hazard quotient) and cumulatively (hazard index), were below 1 in all the samples. The mean concentrations of PAH markers B[a]P and the PAH4 were above the EU limits in both the smoked and the grilled samples tested. This implies that exposure to high levels of these PAHs through regular consumption of these products may increase the risk of developing certain types of cancer and other health issues. The smoked fishes has the lowest MOE values for the PAH8 compared to the other samples. The margin of exposures (MOEs), carcinogenic toxic equivalent (TEQ), and excess cancer risk (ECR) also indicated that frequent consumption of smoked fish (mackerel or catfish) by an adult of 70 kg body weight above the reported intake rate of 0.0019 kg/AME/day for a prolonged period may have higher cancer risks than in other samples. Smoked game meat had the highest PAH16 level, but indicated a relatively lower risk level, possibly because of its relatively low intake rate (0.0004 kg/AME/day).

Abstract The present research work investigates some new results for a fractional generalized Sturm–Liouville–Langevin (FGSLL) equation involving the Ψ-Caputo fractional derivative with a modified argument. We prove the uniqueness of the solution using the Banach contraction principle endowed with a norm of the Ψ-Bielecki-type. Meanwhile, the fixed-point theorems of the Leray–Schauder and Krasnoselskii type associated with the Ψ-Bielecki-type norm are used to derive the existence properties by removing some strong conditions. We use the generalized Gronwall-type inequality to discuss Ulam–Hyers (UH), generalized Ulam–Hyers (GUH), Ulam–Hyers–Rassias (UHR), and generalized Ulam–Hyers–Rassias (GUHR) stability of these solutions. Lastly, three examples are provided to show the effectiveness of our main results for different cases of (FGSLL)-problem such as Caputo-type Sturm–Liouville, Caputo-type Langevin, Caputo–Erdélyi–Kober-type Langevin problems.

Abstract Background The purpose of this study was to investigate the morphology of maxillary first premolar mesial root concavity and to analyse its relation to periodontal bone loss (BL) using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and panoramic radiographs. Methods The mesial root concavity of maxillary premolar teeth was analysed via CBCT. The sex and age of the patients, starting position and depth of the root concavity, apicocoronal length of the concavity on the crown or root starting from the cementoenamel junction (CEJ), total apicocoronal length of the concavity, amount of bone loss both in CBCT images and panoramic radiographs, location of the furcation, length of the buccal and palatinal roots, and buccopalatinal cervical root width were measured. Results A total of 610 patients’ CBCT images were examined, and 100 were included in the study. The total number of upper premolar teeth was 200. The patients were aged between 18 and 65 years, with a mean age of 45.21 ± 13.13 years. All the teeth in the study presented mesial root concavity (100%, n = 200). The starting point of concavity was mostly on the cervical third of the root (58.5%). The mean depth and buccolingual length measurements were 0.96 mm and 4.32 mm, respectively. Depth was significantly related to the amount of alveolar bone loss (F = 5.834, p = 0.001). The highest average concavity depth was 1.29 mm in the group with 50% bone loss. The data indicated a significant relationship between the location of the furcation and bone loss (X2 = 25.215, p = 0.003). Bone loss exceeded 50% in 100% of patients in whom the furcation was in the cervical third and in only 9.5% of patients in whom the furcation was in the apical third (p = 0.003). Conclusions According to the results of this study, the depth of the mesial root concavity and the coronal position of the furcation may increase the amount of alveolar bone loss. Clinicians should be aware of these anatomical factors to ensure accurate treatment planning and successful patient management.

Recently, corruption has become widespread, and firms' responses to corruption carry significant implications. The aim of this study is to check how corruption levels in Jordan influence the capital structure of 80 non-financial companies listed on the Amman Stock Exchange (ASE) from 2013 to 2022. Capital structure is the main dependent variable, and corruption is the crucial variable analyzed as the independent factor. Control variables include company age, profitability, asset tangibility, company size, and the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), in addition to the inflation rate, to create a solid framework for analyzing this nexus. This quantitative research paper applies the fixed-effect (FE) estimation to examine the static model of the study and the generalized method of moment (GMM) for the dynamic model via panel data investigation encompassing 800 company-year observations. The R2 results explain 42.1% of the variations in capital structure level. Accordingly, a 1% upsurge in corruption is accompanied by a 0.0367-unit upsurge in the capital structure ratio. This response is interpreted through the lens of the shielding theory, suggesting that firms raise debt to protect themselves against the predations of corrupt officials. The analysis reveals meaningful connections between the control variables and the capital structure. Specifically, increases in tangibility, firm size, inflation, and GDP correspond to a 3.56%, 1.07%, 6.06%, and 2.143% increase in capital structure, respectively, indicating a positive influence. Conversely, the firm age and profitability variables show adverse effects on capital structure, with coefficients of –1.46% and –7.3%, respectively.

Background: Gynecological cancers are one of the most important threats to women's health worldwide. The objective of this review is to synthesize and present the best available evidence on the experiences relating to sexual well-being among Muslim women with gynecological cancer. Methods: The databases searched included Web of Science, Scopus, SID, Google Scholar, ProQuest, MEDLINE, and CINAHL from the inception of the database until August 2021. The review was guided by the JBI methodology used for qualitative systematic reviews. Findings were collated using the meta-aggregation method through JBI SUMARI. Results: Eight studies involving Muslim women cancer survivors were included in the review. Meta-synthesis of the eight included studies generated 59 findings, which were organized into 14 categories and combined into four synthesized findings. Conclusions: Gynecological cancer and its treatment results in numerous challenges with sexual well-being among Muslim women cancer survivors. Providing information about sexual activity following gynecological cancer, better communication from health care professionals, and support from the husband is essential to overcome the struggle with intimacy and femininity experienced by the women, thus improving the sexual quality of life of Muslim gynecological cancer survivors.

India has been actively pursuing digital financial transformation, and the government has implemented various initiatives to promote a cashless economy. The recent demonetization policy led to a significant push towards digital payments and a surge in the usage of digital wallets, mobile banking, and other cashless methods. These digital transformations aimed to enhance financial inclusion by providing banking and financial services to a larger population segment, especially in rural areas. Despite the push for digital transactions, certain challenges persisted, especially the existence of physical cash. This paradox is evident in many economies worldwide, including India. This study tries to analyze the trend towards the digital financial transformation of the Indian economy and prove the paradoxical situation of the cash-based economy. The study also examines the impact of digital infrastructures (DI) and payment modes and channels (PMC) on total digital payment (TDP) in India.

Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC)–based small-scale power plants are becoming a promising instrument in the recent drive to utilize renewable sources and reduce carbon emissions. But the effectiveness of such systems is limited by the low efficiency of gas expanders, which are the main part of an ORC system. Limaçon-based expansion machines with a fast inlet control valve have great prospects as they could potentially offer efficiencies over 50%. However, the lack of a highly reliable and significantly fast control valve is hindering its possible application. In this paper, a push–pull solenoid valve is optimized using a stochastic optimization technique to provide a fast response. The optimization yields about 56–58% improvement in overall valve response. A performance comparison of the initial and optimized valves applied to a limaçon expander thermodynamic model is also presented. Additionally, the sensitivity of the valve towards a changing inlet pressure and expander rotor velocity is analyzed to better understand the effectiveness of the valve and provide clues to overall performance improvement.

In this work, an artificial neural network (ANN)-based model is proposed to describe the input–output relationships in a Limaçon-To-Circular (L2C) gas expander with an inlet valve. The L2C gas expander is a type of energy converter that has great potential to be used in organic Rankine cycle (ORC)-based small-scale power plants. The proposed model predicts the different performance indices of a limaçon gas expander for different input pressures, rotor velocities, and valve cutoff angles. A network model is constructed and optimized for different model parameters to achieve the best prediction performance compared to the classic mathematical model of the system. An overall normalized mean square error of 0.0014, coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.98, and mean average error of 0.0114 are reported. This implies that the surrogate model can effectively mimic the actual model with high precision. The model performance is also compared to a linear interpolation (LI) method. It is found that the proposed ANN model predictions are about 96.53% accurate for a given error threshold, compared to about 91.46% accuracy of the LI method. Thus the proposed model can effectively predict different output parameters of a limaçon gas expander such as energy, filling factor, isentropic efficiency, and mass flow for different operating conditions. Of note, the model is only trained by a set of input and target values; thus, the performance of the model is not affected by the internal complex mathematical models of the overall valved-expander system. This neural network-based approach is highly suitable for optimization, as the alternative iterative analysis of the complex analytical model is time-consuming and requires higher computational resources. A similar modeling approach with some modifications could also be utilized to design controllers for these types of systems that are difficult to model mathematically.

We diagnosed Sturge-Weber syndrome after a thorough neurological and radiological evaluation. ABSTRACT:The continuous expansion of the internet usage network has provided many opportunities for social media users. The cultural effects of social media are reflected in people's activities. Social media culture has transformed into new platforms where individuals with different cultural characteristics interact with their cultural values. The research aims to include the keywords that the authors emphasize most in social media culture research and the relationship power of these words. Within the scope of the purpose of the research, social media culture studies from Türkiye and France were examined separately. The research sample consisted of social media culture publications in the Web of Science database. The bibliometric analysis method was used in the application. In the research, authors, publications, growth rates, and highlighted keywords in social media culture research are included. As a result of the analysis, the words most emphasized by the authors in the social media culture research on Türkiye were social media, culture, Türkiye, media, popular culture, covid-19, Twitter, Facebook, new media, social, gender, multiculturalism, religiosity, and sustainability. In research on France, the words social media, culture, media, social, covid-19, communication, gender, France, journalism, religion, trust, Twitter, advertising, body image, and networks were emphasized. In research on Türkiye, the strongest relationships were between the words social media, Türkiye, culture, and media. In studies based in France, strong relationships were found between the words social media, culture, media, and social.

Abstract Background Little is known regarding economic impacts of intimate partner violence (IPV) in humanitarian settings, especially the labor market burden. Examining costs of IPV beyond the health burden may provide new information to help with resource allocation for addressing IPV, including within conflict zones. This paper measures the incidence and prevalence of different types of IPV, the potential relationship between IPV and labor market activity, and estimating the cost of these IPV-associated labor market differentials. Methods The association between labor market outcomes, IPV experience, and conflict exposure among women ages 15–49 in Nigeria were studied using the 2018 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey and 2013–17 Uppsala Conflict Data Program data. Descriptive analysis was used to identify patterns of IPV and labor outcomes by region. Based on this, multivariable logistic regression models were used to estimate the association between labor market participation and lifetime IPV exposure. These models were combined with earnings data from the United Nations Human Development Report 2021/2022 and a top-down costing approach to quantify the impacts in terms of lost productivity to the Nigerian economy. Results Substantial differences in IPV exposure and labor market outcomes were found between conflict and non-conflict-affected areas. Women with past year or lifetime exposure to physical, emotional, or “any” IPV were more likely to withdraw from the labor market in the past year, although no differences were found for sexual IPV or conflict-affected regions. We estimate an average reduction of 4.14% in the likelihood of working, resulting in nearly $3.0 billion USD of lost productivity, about 1% of Nigeria’s total economic output. Conclusions Increased odds of labor market withdraw were associated with several measures of IPV. Withdrawal from the formal labor market sector has a substantial associated economic cost for all of Nigerian society. If stronger prevention measures reduce the incidence of IPV against women in Nigeria, a substantial portion of lost economic costs likely could be reclaimed. These costs underscore the economic case, alongside the moral imperative, for stronger protections against IPV for girls and women in Nigeria.

Abstract Background Nitrogen (N) availability is crucial in regulating plants’ abiotic stress resistance, particularly at the seedling stage. Nevertheless, plant responses to N under salinity conditions may vary depending on the soil’s NH4 + to NO3 − ratio. Methods In this study, we investigated the effects of different NH4 +:NO3 − ratios (100/0, 0/100, 25/75, 50/50, and 75/25) on the growth and physio-biochemical responses of soybean seedlings grown under controlled and saline stress conditions (0-, 50-, and 100-mM L− 1 NaCl and Na2SO4, at a 1:1 molar ratio). Results We observed that shoot length, root length, and leaf-stem-root dry weight decreased significantly with increased saline stress levels compared to control. Moreover, there was a significant accumulation of Na+, Cl−, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and malondialdehyde (MDA) but impaired ascorbate-glutathione pools (AsA-GSH). They also displayed lower photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll-a and chlorophyll-b), K+ ion, K+/Na+ ratio, and weakened O2 •−-H2O2-scavenging enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, catalase, peroxidase, monodehydroascorbate reductase, glutathione reductase under both saline stress levels, while reduced ascorbate peroxidase, and dehydroascorbate reductase under 100-mM stress, demonstrating their sensitivity to a saline environment. Moreover, the concentrations of proline, glycine betaine, total phenolic, flavonoids, and abscisic acid increased under both stresses compared to the control. They also exhibited lower indole acetic acid, gibberellic acid, cytokinins, and zeatine riboside, which may account for their reduced biomass. However, NH4 +:NO3 − ratios caused a differential response to alleviate saline stress toxicity. Soybean seedlings supplemented with optimal ratios of NH4 +:NO3 − (T3 = 25:75 and T = 4 50:50) displayed lower Na+ and Cl− and ABA but improved K+ and K+/Na+, pigments, growth hormones, and biomass compared to higher NH4 +:NO3 − ratios. They also exhibited higher O2 •−-H2O2-scavenging enzymes and optimized H2O2, MDA, and AsA-GSH pools status in favor of the higher biomass of seedlings. Conclusions In summary, the NH4 + and NO3 − ratios followed the order of 50:50 > 25:75 > 0:100 > 75:25 > 100:0 for regulating the morpho-physio-biochemical responses in seedlings under SS conditions. Accordingly, we suggest that applying optimal ratios of NH4 + and NO3 − (25/75 and 50:50) can improve the resistance of soybean seedlings grown in saline conditions.

Abstract To assess the effects of warm-up music and low dose (3 mg·kg−1) of caffeine (CAF) on female taekwondo athlete’s activity profile and psychophysiological responses during simulated combat. In a double-blinded, randomized, crossover study, 16 female athletes participated in simulated combats under one control and 5 experimental conditions [i.e., CAF alone (CAF), placebo alone (PL), CAF with music (CAF + M), PL with music (PL + M), and no supplement with music (M)]. After warming-up, athletes rated their felt arousal (FAS). Mean (HRmean) and peak (HRpeak) heart rate values were determined for each combat. Abstract Hemolysis is a crucial factor in various biomedical and pharmaceutical contexts, driving our interest in developing advanced computational techniques for precise prediction. Our proposed approach takes advantage of the unique capabilities of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and transformers to detect complex patterns inherent in the data. The integration of CNN and transformers' attention mechanisms allows for the extraction of relevant information, leading to accurate predictions of hemolytic potential. The proposed method was trained on three distinct data sets of peptide sequences known as recurrent neural network-hemolytic (RNN-Hem), Hlppredfuse, and Combined. Our computational results demonstrated the superior efficacy of our models compared to existing methods. The proposed approach demonstrated impressive Matthews correlation coefficients of 0.5962, 0.9111, and 0.7788 respectively, indicating its effectiveness in predicting hemolytic activity. With its potential to guide experimental efforts in peptide design and drug development, this method holds great promise for practical applications. Integrating CNNs and transformers proves to be a powerful tool in the fields of bioinformatics and therapeutic research, highlighting their potential to drive advancement in this area.

Abstract Background Among gynaecological malignancies, endometrial cancer (EC) is the most prevalent type of uterine cancer affecting women. This study explored the proteomic profiles of plasma samples obtained from EC patients, those with hyperplasia (Hy), and a control group (CO). A combination of techniques, such as 2D-DIGE, mass spectrometry, and bioinformatics, including pathway analysis, was used to identify proteins with modified expression levels, biomarkers and their associated metabolic pathways in these groups. Methods Thirty-four patients, categorized into three groups—10 with EC, 12 with Hy, and 12 CO—between the ages of 46 and 75 years old were included in the study. Untargeted proteomic analysis was carried out using two-dimensional difference in gel electrophoresis (2D-DIGE) coupled with matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS). Results In all three groups, 114 proteins that were significantly (p ≤ 0.05 and fold change ≥ 1.5) altered were successfully identified using peptide mass fingerprints (PMFs). Compared with those in the control group (CO), the EC samples had 85 differentially expressed proteins (39 upregulated and 46 downregulated), and in the Hy group, 81 proteins were dysregulated (40 upregulated and 41 downregulated) compared to those in the CO group, while 33 proteins exhibited differential regulation (12 upregulated and 21 downregulated) in the EC plasma samples compared to those in the Hy group. Vitamin D binding protein and complement C3 distinguished Hy and EC from CO with the greatest changes in expression. Among the differentially expressed proteins identified, enzymes with catalytic activity represented the largest group (42.9%). In terms of biological processes, most of the proteins were involved in cellular processes (28.8%), followed by metabolic processes (16.7%). STRING analysis for protein interactions revealed that the significantly differentially abundant proteins in the three groups are involved in three main biological processes: signalling of complement and coagulation cascades, regulation of insulin-like growth factor (IGF) transport and uptake by insulin-like growth factor binding proteins (IGFBPs), and plasma lipoprotein assembly, remodelling, and clearance. Conclusion The identified plasma protein markers have the potential to serve as biomarkers for differentiating between EC and Hy, as well as for early diagnosis and monitoring of cancer progression.

ABSTRACT: Objective: Here we describe a novel IncFIA plasmid harbouring mcr-10 gene in a clinical Enterobacter ludwigii strain isolated at the University Hospital in Pilsen in the Czech Republic. Methods: The strain was subjected to antibiotic susceptibility testing. Whole genome sequencing was performed using Illumina for short-read sequencing and Oxford Nanopore Technologies for long-read sequencing followed by hybrid assembly. The resulting genome was used to detect species using average nucleotide identity, resistance genes, plasmid replicon and MLST (using centre for genomic epidemiology databases; ResFinder, PlasmidFinder and MLST, respectively) and virulence genes using VFDB. Results: Τhe strain showed susceptibility against tetracycline, cefuroxime and chloramphenicol, and it was susceptible to the second and third generation of cephalosporins, carbapenems and colistin. Genome analysis identified the strain as E. ludwigii sequence type ST20 and located the mcr-10 gene on an IncFIA (HI1)/IncFII (Yp) plasmid (pI9455333_MCR10; 129 863 bp). Upon blasting the nucleotide sequence of pI9455333_MCR10 against the NCBI database, no similar plasmid sequence was detected, implying a novel plasmid structure. Nevertheless, it showed a partial similarity with pRHBSTW-00123_3 and FDAARGOS 1432, which were detected in Enterobacter cloacae complex (ECC) strains in wastewater samples in 2017 in UK and in 2021 in the United States, respectively, and pEC81-mcr, which was detected in a clinical Escherichia coli strain in 2020 in China. Moreover, I9455333cz genome carried virulence genes coding for curli fibers, fimbrial adherence determinants, siderophore aerobactin, iron uptake proteins and regulators of sigma factor. Conclusion: In conclusion, we identified a novel IncF plasmid harbouring mcr-10 gene in a clinical Enterobacter ludwigii strain. To our knowledge, this is the first clinical report of mcr-10 in the Czech Republic.

Since the emergency of coronavirus disease 2019, no specific drug has been developed within the fighting program against its spread. In Cameroon, it has been reported that the dish “yellow soup” can significantly curb the progress of the disease, while no chemical investigations have been done so far to support that conclusion. Chemical investigations of four selected spices of that dish led to the isolation of a total of 44 distinct pure compounds, which were identified using spectroscopic data. Furthermore, the docking scores of the isolated compounds were inspected by AutoDock4.2.6 software toward SARS-CoV-2 multi-targets involving main protease (Mpro), helicase, papain-like protease (PLpro), and human angiotensin‐converting enzyme 2 (ACE2). The most potent isolated compounds underwent molecular dynamics (MD) simulations over 100 ns. Stigmasterol demonstrated outstanding potency toward Mpro and PLpro with ΔG binding values of −35.6 and −36.6 kcal/mol, respectively, compared to nirmatrelvir. Nevertheless, 3β-taraxeryl acetate revealed good binding affinity against helicase and lupeol unveiled superior binding energy toward ACE2 compared to nirmatrelvir. Post-MD analyses manifested great steadiness of the isolated compounds within the binding pockets of SARS-CoV-2 targets throughout 100 ns MD simulations. Stigmasterol, 3β-taraxeryl acetate, and lupeol are recommended for further in vivo/in vitro tests toward SARS-CoV-2 multi-targets.

Abstract Extracellular vesicles (EVs) harbor several signaling molecules to maintain intercellular communication. Based on the exosomal cargo type, metabolic, genomic, and proteomic status of parent cells can be investigated. Due to the existence of trivial levels of target molecules inside EVs, the application of accurate and sensitive detection methods is mandatory. Here, we used an electrochemical immunosensor using a biotinylated monoclonal CD63 antibody as the capturing element for the detection of EVs isolated from MDA-MB-231 cells and cancer patients. Simultaneously, breast cancer biomarker CA-15-3 was detected in isolated EVs using a sandwich method to increase specificity. Data indicated a linear dynamic range of 2000–10000 EVs/µL and a lower limit of quantification of 2000 EVs/µL. Based on data from real sample analysis, the levels of exosomal CA-15-3 can differ according to the severity and systemic content of this factor. Pd-perovskite-based immunosensor provides a platform for quick and in-depth analysis of EVs isolated for cancer cells.

Abstract Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) is a heterogeneous spectrum of clonal hematopoietic disorders with varying degrees of cytopenia and morphologic dysplasia. The hemoglobin, albumin, lymphocyte, and platelet (HALP) score is a prognostic marker in several types of malignant tumors. Prognostic value of HALP score remains unclear for MDS. To determine the prognostic value of baseline HALP score in MDS. We retrospectively analyzed data from 130 newly diagnosed MDS patients evaluated and classified under HALP score. By the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, the optimal cut-off value of HALP was > 67.5 in predicting mortality. Patients were divided into two groups: with low and high HALP scores, and the characteristics were compared between both groups. Patients’ median age was 68 (19–84) years, and 79 (60.8%) were male. Higher HALP score was detected in MDS patients with intermediate-risk under IPSS score, and at high and very high risks under IPSS-R score, and those receiving azacitidine (AZA) treatment. The survival rates of those with a HALP score > 67.5 were significantly lower than those with low HALP score at 17.77 ± 3.98 (median ± SE) (p 67.5 were found as 25, 18, and 11%, respectively. Median overall survival (OS) was also determined as 33.10 (95% CI 16.34–49.88) months by the Kaplan–Meier method. HALP score has shown an ability to be a useful prognostic biomarker in various cancers, including MDS. The meaningful cut-off value of HALP is disease-specific and largely study-specific. High HALP score is associated with unfavorable clinicopathological characteristics. Also, it may be useful in predicting OS and mortality of MDS.

Abstract Background Individuals who have the ability to bounce back from stressful events, to recover from their troubles and adverse environmental conditions by getting stronger each time are known as resilient people. Some professions may cause more occupational anxiety than others due to their characteristics and working conditions. In this research, we aimed to develop a professional commitment scale for the ambulance team. Another aim was to analyze the relationships between professional commitment, occupational anxiety, resilience, gender, job, seniority and working unit variables. Methods In the study, data were collected from a total of 1142 emergency ambulance workers working in Emergency Ambulance and Emergency Call Centers in 34 different cities in Turkey. Data were collected using the “Professional Commitment of Ambulance Team Scale (PCATS), Occupational Anxiety Scale for Emergency Medical Service Professionals (OASEMSP), and Resilience Scale for Adults (RSA). Scale development analyses were carried out using Classical Test Theory (CTT) and Item Response Theory (IRT). Regression analysis were used to examine the relationships between professional commitment, occupational anxiety, resilience, gender, job, seniority and working unit. Results As a result of the exploratory factor analysis (EFA), it was determined that 8 items remaining in the professional commitment scale formed a single-factor structure, explaining 46% of the variance of professional commitment of the team. The Cronbach’s Alpha reliability value was 0.867. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) confirmed the results of exploratory factor analysis. The Cronbach’s Alpha reliability coefficient obtained through CTT was 0.868, and the marginal reliability coefficient within the scope of IRT was 0.877. The test-retest reliability coefficient was calculated as 0.832, which indicates that the scale is valid and reliable. Conclusions The study revealed that resilience has a positive effect for professional commitment while occupational anxiety has a negative effect for professional commitment. In addition, having a moderate seniority has a negative (reducing) effect for professional commitment. Other variables (gender, job, and working unit) was found to have no significant impact on professional commitment.

Abstract Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI) therapy is common among perinatal populations for the treatment of mood disorders. Medications can affect diversity and composition of the gut microbiome, which plays a key role in modulating health. While previous studies have examined the effects of antidepressant exposure on the maternal gut microbiome, whether SSRI exposure affects the offspring gut microbiome is unknown. We investigated the effects of maternal fluoxetine exposure on the gut microbiome of maternal and offspring mice during pregnancy and lactation (embryonic day 10–lactation day 21; E10–L21). Stool samples collected on E17, L11, L15, and L21 were examined using 16S rRNA sequencing. Our results suggest that maternal fluoxetine exposure may result in decreased alpha diversity of the offspring gut microbiome in early life. Furthermore, we observed several genera-specific differences in the gut microbiome based on treatment, specifically of Turicibacter, Parasutterella, and Romboutsia. These findings support our understanding of gut health, as dysbiotic development of the gut microbiome has been associated with local and systemic health problems including gastrointestinal morbidities and interrupted growth patterns in infants. Future research should pursue study in human populations and those at high risk for gut microbial dysbiosis and intestinal injury.

Abstract One of the most prevalent disorders of the urinary system is urinary tract infection, which is mostly brought on by uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC). The objective of this study was to evaluate the regenerative therapeutic and antibacterial efficacy of PRP for induced bacterial cystitis in dogs in comparison to conventional antibiotics. 25 healthy male mongrel dogs were divided into 5 groups (n = 5). Control negative group that received neither induced infection nor treatments. 20 dogs were randomized into 4 groups after two weeks of induction of UPEC cystitis into; Group 1 (control positive; G1) received weekly intravesicular instillation of sodium chloride 0.9%. Group 2 (syst/PRP; G2), treated with both systemic intramuscular antibiotic and weekly intravesicular instillation of PRP; Group 3 (PRP; G3), treated with weekly intravesicular instillation of PRP, and Group 4 (syst; G4) treated with an intramuscular systemic antibiotic. Animals were subjected to weekly clinical, ultrasonographic evaluation, urinary microbiological analysis, and redox status biomarkers estimation. Urinary matrix metalloproteinases (MMP-2, MMP-9) and urinary gene expression for platelet-derived growth factor -B (PDGF-B), nerve growth factor (NGF), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) were measured. At the end of the study, dogs were euthanized, and the bladder tissues were examined macroscopically, histologically, and immunohistochemically for NF-κB P65 and Cox-2. Abstract IL-17F single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) can affect IL-17F expression and activity and this can lead to the increased susceptibility to several autoimmune diseases. The aim was to investigate the association of IL-17F (rs763780) SNP with the development of multiple sclerosis (MS) in a cohort of Egyptian patients and to evaluate the effect of this polymorphism on the disease course. IL-17F (rs763780) gene polymorphisms was typed by TaqMan genotyping assay for 231 Egyptians divided into 102 MS patients and 129 healthy controls with matched age and sex. The IL-17F rs763780 C containing genotypes (CT+CC) and C allele have statistically significant increased frequency in MS patients when compared with controls (p = 0.005 and 0.004 respectively) especially in females’ patients (p = 0.005 and 0.006 respectively). The heterozygous CT genotype was associated with the presence of optic neuritis (p = 0.038). The multivariable regression analysis revealed significant associations between smoking, the higher frequency of attacks and the prediction of higher EDSS score (p = 0.032, 0.049 respectively). It can be concluded that the IL-17F rs763780 C containing genotypes (CT and CC) and C allele may be risk factors for the development of MS in the studied Egyptian cohort by a gender-dependent mechanism that contributes to tendency for predisposition in females and optic neuritis is more common in patients carrying the CT heterozygous genotype.

Abstract Background To compare the diagnostic value of 120-kV with conventional 96-kV Cone-Beam CT (CBCT) of the temporal bone after cochlear implant (CI) surgery. Methods This retrospective study included CBCT scans after CI surgery between 06/17 and 01/18. CBCT allowed examinations with 96-kV or 120-kV; other parameters were the same. Two radiologists independently evaluated following criteria on 5-point Likert scales: osseous spiral lamina, inner and outer cochlear wall, semi-circular canals, mastoid trabecular structure, overall image quality, metal and motion artefacts, depiction of intracochlear electrode position and visualisation of single electrode contacts. Effective radiation dose was assessed. Results Seventy-five patients (females, n = 39 [52.0%], mean age, 55.8 ± 16.5 years) were scanned with 96-kV (n = 32, 42.7%) and 120-kV (n = 43, 57.3%) protocols including CI models from three vendors (vendor A n = 7; vendor B n = 43; vendor C n = 25). Nigeria has the largest population in Africa, a high fertility rate, and unmet needs for family planning. Family planning is a key strategy for sustainable development. A good knowledge of factors that determine contraceptive uptake is imperative for policy formulation. A nationally representative secondary dataset of 41,821 women aged 15–49 years who participated in the 2018 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey was analyzed. Multivariate logistic regression was used to examine the association between various factors and the current use of modern contraceptives. The respondents’ average age was 35.9 ± 7.9 years. Overall, contraceptive prevalence was 16.6% for traditional methods and 12.2% for modern methods. Predictors of an increase in modern contraception use were age 40–44 (aOR = 1.07, 95% CI: 0.75–1.53); being a working-class woman (aOR = 1.15, 95% CI: 0.99–1.33); living in an urban area (aOR = 1.14, 95% CI: 0.97–1.33); living in the South West (aOR = 1.36, 95% CI: 1.03–1.79); increasing wealth (aOR = 0.78, 95% CI: 0.66–0.93); and health insurance (aOR = 1.22, 95% CI: 0.89–1.68). Couple dynamics influencing modern contraceptive use were joint decision (aOR = 2.16, 95% CI: 1.81–2.59), self-decision on health care (aOR = 1.34, 95% CI: 1.06–1.70), and earning more than a partner (aOR = 1.14, 95% CI: 0.78–1.66). There are significant variations in contraceptive uptake attributable to socioeconomic and political inequalities, requiring a holistic approach to mitigate barriers and improve contraceptive uptake.

By categorising and ranking these barriers, the study seeks to prioritise the most significant hindrances to smart city development. The research analysed 31 barriers, classified them into six groups, and examined them through existing literature. Semi‐structured interviews with stakeholders responsible for implementing the SSC strategy provided additional valuable insights. The study used the Partial Least Squares Path Modelling method to prioritise the selected barriers. The results showed that the most significant barriers to SSC development were in the Economic category, followed by Technology, Governance, Social, Legal, Ethical, and Environmental barriers. This research provides valuable insights for policymakers and the Abu Dhabi government to eliminate obstacles that hinder SSC development initiatives.
