El diseño de edificios sustentables hace uso de herramientas de simulación energética como EnergyPlus. Un elemento clave en la eficiencia energética es la ventana, y particularmente el marco, debido a su transmitancia térmica generalmente elevada en relación a los elementos que componen la envolvente edilicia. Además, el diseño de marco reduce la superficie vidriada, disminuyendo el recurso solar aprovechable por ganancia directa. Por lo tanto, cuando se realice una simulación en EnergyPlus, resulta fundamental la adecuada definición del diseño de ventanas a través de los elementos de entrada (inputs). Este trabajo analiza las distintas opciones posibles para la modelización de los marcos de ventanas en EnergyPlus, y los compara entre sí mediante simulación. Los resultados evidencian la elevada sensibilidad de los datos de salida (outputs) frente a la falta de precisión posible en la carga de inputs de marco, resaltando los riesgos de impericia por parte de los profesionales proyectistas., The design of sustainable buildings makes use of energy simulation tools like EnergyPlus. A key element in energy efficiency is the window, and more specifically the window frame, since it generally has a higher thermal transmittance than the other building envelop components. Moreover, the frame reduces the glazing area, decreasing the solar gain. Therefore, when carrying out a simulation in EnergyPlus, it is essential to specify the design of window frames through the correct definition of inputs. In this paper, the different possible options for the modeling of window frames in EnergyPlus are analyzed, then compared with each other through simulations. El paisaje construido modifica los parámetros micro-climáticos de un sitio. Una de las principales alteraciones es el aumento de la temperatura del aire, que da origen al fenómeno de isla de calor urbano (ICU). La ICU aumenta la demanda de energía eléctrica y disminuye la habitabilidad de los espacios interiores y exteriores. Este trabajo busca identificar formas urbanas que colaboren a reducir el efecto de la ICU en Mendoza; mediante el análisis y comparación del comportamiento térmico de 10 canales viales urbanos (CVU), durante el periodo de verano. Los resultados del trabajo muestran que los CVU de tipo abierto-forestado se mantienen más frescos en comparación al caso compacto-sin forestación, lT°media=2.5°C. Pero, para proponer un esquema de crecimiento urbano de tipo abierto-forestado en ciudades de clima árido es necesario analizar en profundidad otros aspectos del urbanismo, además del energético-ambiental, que sirvan para asegurar el desarrollo urbano sustentable., The built landscape modifies the micro-climatic parameters of a site. One of the major impacts is the increase of the air temperature, which gives rise to the phenomenon of urban heat island (UHI). The UHI increases the demand for electricity and decreases the livability of the interior and exterior spaces. This paper aims to identify urban forms that help to mitigate the effect of the UHI in Mendoza; analyzing and comparing the thermal behavior of 10 representative urban canyons during the summer. The results show that the open-forested group of cases keeps cooler compared to the compact-without forestation, lT°mean=2.5°C. En el mundo actual, el conocimiento de las condiciones ambientales y climáticas a nivel local, en especial la dinámica de la radiación solar, juega un rol importante frente a los escenarios de cambio climático descritos por organismos internacionales. La necesidad de generar energía de forma renovable y sustentable presenta un desafío directo sobre el manejo de los datos satelitales y su integración a la investigación aplicada. Este artículo presenta el desarrollo del método geoestadístico para la corrección de valores anómalos de radiación solar emitida en un área de 7,5 km2 usando una grilla cuadrangular de 150 m2. Procesos atmosféricos que bloquean la llegada de parte de la onda electromagnética son un tema logístico para la localización y el aprovechamiento potencial de granjas solares para la producción de energía en la región latinoamericana. El mapa resultante indica cambios en la variable estudiada debido a condiciones independientes de la cobertura vegetal explicitando dos sectores (A y B) para la comparación del estimado en la misma zona. In today`s world, knowledge of the local climatic and environmental conditions,especially the dynamics of solar radiation, plays an important role in climate change scenarios developed by international organizations. The need for energy supply in a renewable and sustainable form creates a challenge for data satellite management and its integration to applied research. This article presents the development of the geostatistical method for correcting outliers of solar radiation emitted in a 7.5 km2 field using a 150 m2 quadrangular grid. Theatmospheric processes that block the arrival of a portion of the electromagnetic wave represent a logistic matter for the localisation and potential exploitation of solar farms for energy production in Latin America. This study presents a 2014 high-resolution spatially disaggregated emission inventory (0.025°× 0.025° horizontal resolution), of the main activities in the energy sector in Argentina. The sub-sectors considered are public generation of electricity, oil refineries, cement production, transport (maritime, air, rail and road), residential and commercial. The following pollutants were included: greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4, N2O), ozone precursors (CO, NOx, VOC) and other specific air quality indicators such as SO2, PM10, and PM2.5. This work could contribute to a better geographical allocation of the pollutant sources through census based population maps. Considering the sources of greenhouse gas emissions, the total amount is 144 Tg CO2eq, from which the transportation sector emits 57.8 Tg (40%); followed by electricity generation, with 40.9 Tg (28%); residential + commercial, with 31.24 Tg (22%); and cement and refinery production, with 14.3 Tg (10%). This inventory shows that 49% of the total emissions occur in rural areas: 31% in rural areas of medium population density, 13% in intermediate urban areas and 7% in densely populated urban areas. However, if emissions are analyzed by extension (per square km), the largest impact is observed in medium and densely populated urban areas, reaching more than 20.3 Gg per square km of greenhouse gases, 297 Mg/km2 of ozone precursors gases and 11.5 Mg/km2of other air quality emissions. A comparison with the EDGAR global emission database shows that, although the total country emissions are similar for several sub sectors and pollutants, its spatial distribution is not applicable to Argentina. The road and residential transport emissions represented by EDGAR result in an overestimation of emissions in rural areas and an underestimation in urban areas, especially in more densely populated areas. Currently, quantifying global solar radiation at surface in Argentina is crucial for the development of projects related to solar energy, calculation of evapotranspiration and eco-sustainability architecture, among other environmental issues. In recent years, several models have been developed to estimate the solar energy resources by means of various techniques, e.g. satellite imaging, kriging, or Artificial Neural Networks. The use of satellite data allows for a better spatial representation, being of great relevance in areas with lack of terrain measurements. In this paper, we use the CERES_SYN1deg to develop a new Global Solar Radiation Atlas for Argentina. In this study, we developed maps of annual and monthly mean daily global solar radiation using CERES_SYN1deg data between 2000 and 2016. In order to validate the global solar radiation data provided by CERES_SYN1deg, they were compared with ground-based measurements in the time overlap of both instruments, in four monitoring sites of the SAVER-Net project and an additional site in Tandil, which belongs to the Remote Sensing Group of IHLLA. The maps show the spatial and temporal variation of global solar radiation in Argentina. Comparisons with ground-based pyranometers reveal relative differences of around 3% at a monthly scale for all sites, while the biases can be neglected. Therefore, it is possible to conclude that the maps could be very useful for different technical and scientific purposes, and the comparison with ground-based data demonstrates CERES_SYN1deg´s reliability. El objetivo principal de este proyecto de extensión es fomentar, impulsar y realizar distintas iniciativas de actuación, para el desarrollo y la aplicación de las tecnologías energéticas para el ahorro en el hogar. También persigue una mejora en el ahorro y la eficiencia energética, el fomento del uso racional de la energía y, en general, la óptima gestión de los recursos energéticos. En este sentido, la Universidad en conjunto con la Asociación Civil: “Fortalecer Misiones” realiza labores de difusión y concienciación mediante campañas informativas, edición de guías técnicas y organización de jornadas, así como la integración de las actuaciones energéticas de la Comunidad. Este proyecto, destinado a la comunidad del Barrio Néstor Kirchner, aborda de una manera sencilla, pautas de ahorro energético, para fomentar el consumo responsable y sostenible de energía que contribuya a una disminución de la intensidad energética, a un menor impacto sobre el medio ambiente, contribuyendo a la lucha contra el cambio climático y al desarrollo sostenible de las regiones de la zona. El control del agua de consumo es importante, ya sea que provenga desistemas de potabilización o de agua sin tratamiento. El acceso crecientea agua potabilizada ha sido monitoreado a lo largo de los últimos años afin de alcanzar los Objetivos del Desarrollo del Milenio cuyo plazo secumplió en 2015. Para el año 2030 se propusieron los Objetivos deDesarrollo Sostenible buscando asegurar cada vez más el acceso a aguasegura de toda la población mundial. En el marco de estas metas mundialeses importante el monitoreo de sistemas locales y por lo tanto, en estetrabajo, se ha estudiado una población que cuenta con diferentes sistemasde agua, incluidos sistemas de agua tratada y sin tratar. Se realizó elmonitoreo de todos los indicadores microbiológicos regidos por el CódigoAlimentario Argentino, y de diversas variables fisicoquímicas haciendouna evaluación exhaustiva para diferenciar los sitios de muestreo deacuerdo a la estacionalidad, al tipo de fuente de provisión de agua, y ala correlación entre variables microbiológicas y fisicoquímicas. Seobservó que el agua proveniente de fuentes con tratamiento han presentadodesviaciones en algunas de sus variables en época de lluvias, mientrasque las fuentes sin tratamiento no cumplen con los requerimientosbacteriológicos en forma permanente. Este estudio pone de manifiesto laimportancia de reevaluar los sistemas de potabilización que deberíangarantizar su potabilidad de manera constante, y la inmediata necesidadde nuevos sistemas de tratamiento para dar solución a la población queaún no cuenta con agua de consumo segura. Drinking water monitoring plans are important to characterize both treated and untreated water used for drinking purposes. Access to drinking water increased in recent years as a response to the Millennium Development Goals set for 2015. The new Sustainable Development Goals aim to ensure universal access to safe drinking water by 2030. Within the framework of these global goals, it is crucial to monitor local drinking water systems. In this paper, treated and untreated water from different sources currently consumed in a specific town in Salta, northern Argentina, was thoroughly assessed. Monitoring extended along several seasons and included the physical, chemical and microbiological variables recommended by the Argentine Food Code. On the one hand, treated water mostly complies with these standards, with some non-compliances detected during the rainy season. Untreated water, on the other hand, never meets microbiological standards and is unfit for human consumption. Monitoring seems essential to detect anomalies and help guarantee a constant provision of safe drinking water. The gas–solid separation has several industrial applications in engineering process. The collection efficiency and the energy consumption are critical variables in particles separation process. In this study, a non-linear programming problem is proposed to maximise the cyclone efficiency in a 34,560.0 ton/year particles separation–classification plant. A new process integration scheme is proposed to energy consumption minimisation. The units included in the model are a powder feeder, a high efficiency cyclone, a bag filter and a blower. Stairmand and Swift’s high efficiency cyclones models are evaluated and compared. Four particulate materials are considered: limestone, dolomite, sawdust and toner. The particles diameters range studied is 0.1–1000 (Formula presented.)m. Mass and energy balances are solved with an initial solid concentration of 500 g/m(Formula presented.). Stairmand’s cyclone proved to be more efficient than Swift for all materials analysed. The highest cyclone efficiency is achieved for sawdust ((Formula presented.) 99%). The cyclone separates more than 34,000 ton/year of particles (Formula presented.)m. The energy integration scheme consumes 43% less energy than the basic one for all cases studied. The proposed optimisation model results a valuable tool for optimal process design, reducing the environment process impact and adaptable to operate at high temperatures values with different materials. En las últimas décadas, las ciudades latinoamericanas han experimentado un marcado crecimiento como consecuencia directa de la alta tasa demográfica y de la transformación de las estructuras económicas. En particular, la expansión urbana en Mendoza, Argentina, ha seguido dos direcciones: una, hacia el oasis irrigado, limitada zona de producción agrícola y otra, hacia el oeste, sobre el piedemonte, de marcada vulnerabilidad ambiental. Con el fin de asegurar la sostenibilidad del desarrollo urbano del Área Metropolitana de Mendoza - AMM es imperativo regular su crecimiento.En este contexto, la presente investigación efectúa una revisión bibliográfica crítica de las normativas existentes en materia de ordenamiento del piedemonte a nivel mundial, con el objeto de detectar pautas que han acompañado el crecimiento urbano de otras ciudades de piedemonte, y comparar sus principios rectores con aquellos que ha fijado el marco regulatorio de Mendoza a fin de descubrir sus fortalezas y debilidades. Se observa que a pesar de que en los últimos treinta años, la provincia ha tratado de ordenar este crecimiento mediante un conjunto de reglamentaciones, la urbanización del piedemonte no contempla su vulnerabilidad ambiental e induce a un constante deterioro del ecosistema.Finalmente, la presente investigación pretende sistematizar el estado del arte y contribuir de modo original, al desarrollo de regulaciones que contribuyan a la sustentabilidad de la expansión urbana en zonas de piedemonte. En particular, l'expansió urbana a Mendoza (Argentina) ha seguit dues direccions: l'una, cap a l'oasi irrigat, limitada zona de producció agrícola i una altra, cap a l'oest, sobre el piedemonte, de marcada vulnerabilitat ambiental. Per tal d'assegurar la sostenibilitat del desenvolupament urbà de l'Àrea Metropolitana de Mendoza – l’AMM, és imperatiu regular el seu creixement.En aquest context, la present investigació fa una revisió bibliogràfica crítica de les normatives existents en matèria d'ordenament del piedemonte a nivell mundial, amb l'objecte de detectar pautes que han acompanyat el creixement urbà d'altres ciutats de piedemonte, i comparar els seus principis rectors amb aquells que ha fixat el marc regulador de Mendoza a fi de descobrir les seves fortaleses i debilitats. S'observa que tot i que en els últims trenta anys, la província ha tractat d'ordenar aquest creixement mitjançant un conjunt de reglamentacions, la urbanització del piedemonte no contempla la seva vulnerabilitat ambiental i indueix a un constant deteriorament de l'ecosistema.Finalment, la present investigació pretén sistematitzar l'estat de l'art i contribuir de manera original, al desenvolupament de regulacions que contribueixin a la sostenibilitat de l'expansió urbana en zones de piedemonte. In recent decades, Latin American cities have experienced a marked increase as a direct result of the high population rate and the transformation of economic structures. In particular, the urban expansion in Mendoza, Argentina, has followed two directions: one toward the irrigated oasis, limited area of agricultural production and another to the west, on the hillsides with marked environmental vulnerability. In order to ensure the sustainability of the urban development in the Metropolitan Area of Mendoza - MAM, it is imperative to regulate its growth.In this context, the present investigation makes a critical bibliographical revision of the worldwide existing norms on the piedmont, in order to detect patterns that have accompanied the urban growth of other piedmont cities, and to compare its guiding principles with those that have set the regulatory framework of Mendoza in order to discover its strengths and weaknesses. It is observed that although in the last thirty years, the province has tried to order this growth through a set of regulations; the urbanization of the piedmont does not contemplate its environmental vulnerability and induces a constant deterioration of the ecosystem.Finally, the present research aims to systematize the state of the art and contribute in an original way to the development of regulations that contribute to the sustainability of the urban expansion in piedmont area.

In this paper, different strategies of aeration and organics feed in the reactor were studied toevaluate the simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) process efficiency for a sequencing batchrotating disk biofilm reactor (SBRDR). The effect of C/N ratio on biological nitrogen removal was also studied.Among the four strategies used, the ones with organic feeding showed the best results to promote SND. It wasalso observed a different behavior: the efficiency of SND as a function of the C/N ratio shows a tendency to ahave a lower value than values previously reported in the literature. A continuous or intermittent aeration in theprocess did not improved the nitrogen removal. La Ciudad de Comodoro Rivadavia, se ha desarrollado al pie del cerro Chenque. La urbanización ha ido avanzando parcialmente sobre la base del faldeo Sur de esta singular elevación aledaña a la costa atlántica, en el golfo de San Jorge. Históricamente, el cerro Chenque ha manifestado sus condiciones de inestabilidad con sucesivos deslizamientos en sus laderas. En este trabajo se presenta un análisis de las características geológicas y geotécnicas relevantes consideradas para el proyecto de estabilización del faldeo Sur de este cerro ubicado en el sector Norte de la ciudad de Comodoro Rivadavia, sobre la costa marítima de la provincia de Chubut, aproximadamente a los 45º52´, entre las Rutas Provinciales 26 y 39. El estudio consistió en proyectar los taludes verificando la estabilidad local y general de los mismos. Para ello se utilizó modelos numéricos basados en análisis de equilibrio límite y modelaciones utilizando el método de elementos finitos. Los resultados obtenidos permitieron arribar a la geometría de los taludes con niveles de seguridad recomendados en la literatura y minimizando el volumen de excavaciones. The City of Comodoro Rivadavia, has developed at the foothill of the “Cerro Chenque” and the urbanization has expanded partially towards the lower part of the southern slope of this formation, adjacent to the Atlantic coast, in the gulf of San Jorge. Historically, the Chenque hill has undergone several landslides, of considerable magnitude in some cases, with tragic outcomes for the population dwelling in the vicinity of the hill. This paper presents an analysis of the geological and geotechnical features relevant for a stabilization project of the southern hill of the Chenque, located in the north sector of the city of Comodoro Rivadavia, along the coastline of the Chubut province, at latitude of 45º52´, among the RP 26 and 39 routes. Local and global safety of slopes was verified by means of limit equilibrium and finite element methods. El seguimiento de inundaciones y sequías tiene un amplio desarrollo a nivel internacional y nacional. En nuestro país, el desarrollo científico es consistente pero con limitaciones de aplicación práctica (95% de las cuencas hidrológicas de Argentina no disponen de redes de alerta). En este marco se desarrolla el proyecto FONARSEC N°19, donde se inserta el presente trabajo, el cual consiste en la utilización de técnicas de teledetección para la identificación de zonas no anegadas que puedan ser tenidas en cuenta para la instalación de las estaciones de monitoreo ambiental. Los métodos analizados fueron: Índice de Agua de Diferencia Normalizada (NDWIgao), Índice de Agua de Diferencia Normalizada Modificado (NDWIXu), análisis de la banda infrarroja media (1,566-1,651 µm), Transformación de Tasseled Cap (TTC), clasificación no supervisada (ISODATA) y supervisada (máxima verosimilitud). Como producto final de cada método, aplicado a imágenes del satélite Landsat 8, se obtuvieron imágenes binarias (zonas anegadas/zonas no anegadas) de la cuenca del Río Salado. La consistencia se analizó con información suplementaria de Google Earth, de vectores de cuerpos de agua permanente y de cursos de agua provistos por el Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN), de las imágenes en falso color compuesto de las bandas de reflectividad, y de las características hidrológicas de la cuenca. De este modo, se seleccionaron los dos métodos que mejores resultados brindaron y se realizó un mapa final del estado hídrico de la cuenca y la ubicación potencial de las estaciones de monitoreo ambiental, con el fin de buscar la disminución del riesgo de que dichas estaciones se inunden y generen inconvenientes en los registros de los instrumentos., The monitoring of floods and droughts enjoys a wide development at national and international levels. In our country, scientific development is consistent. However, it presents limitations as regards its practical application (95% of the hydrological basins in Argentina do not have available warning networks). The FONARSEC No 19 project, where the present work is conducted, is developed within this framework, and it involves the use of remote sensing techniques for the identification of nonflooded areas that may be taken into consideration in the establishment of the environmental monitoring stations. The analyzed methods were: Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWIgao), Modified Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWIXu), analysis of mid-infrared band (1,566-1,651 μm), Tasseled Cap Transformation (TCT), unsupervised classification (ISODATA) and supervised classification (maximum likelihood). Binary images (nonflooded areas/flooded areas) of the Río Salado basin were obtained as the final product of each method applied to Landsat 8 satellite images. Facultad de Ingeniería y Ciencias Agrarias; Argentina Abstract: Annual anomalies of Lambertian equivalent reflectivity (LER) retrieved from the total ozone mapping spectrometer spanning the period November 1978–November 2005 were studied in the Southern Hemisphere, in a region bounded by 0° S and 60° S, and their trends were estimated. With the exception of few regions where the variable may represent the contribution of both cloudiness and snow, trends in LER anomalies provided an evolution of total cloudiness. On average, the study region experienced a net increase in LER values of 0.78 reflectivity units (RU) decade−1; if only significant trend values are considered this figure increased to 1.18 RU decade−1. The region that showed the largest upward trend, up to 4 RU decade−1, was located over the eastern Pacific, off the coasts of Chile and Peru, where the presence of marine stratocumulus is frequent. Despite the overall positive trend there were regions that yielded a negative one, most notably the tropical latitudes of South America and Africa. The yearly zonal means also showed a positive trend at all latitudes, but significance occurred beyond 20° S only. Correlation maps between LER anomalies and five different circulation indices were also introduced. The indices with the highest and lowest number of significant correlation values were the Madden–Julian oscillation at 70° E and the quasi-biennial Oscillation, respectively.

La sustentabilidad alimentaria es importante pues trata de un sector productivo imprescindible en escenarios futuros de crecimiento poblacional y limitación de recursos. El sector alimentario involucra procesos biológicos, químicos y físicos que impactan el medio ambiente de formas diversas: uso de energía y gases de efecto invernadero (GEI), uso y contaminación del agua, eutrofización, pesticidas y productos farmacéuticos, deforestación y desertificación, entre otros. Por lo tanto, el análisis de impactos ambientales y sustentabilidad de la producción y consumo de alimentos presenta desafíos particulares teniendo en cuenta su complejidad. En este trabajo estudiamos el uso de energía y la emisión de GEI en la producción de maíz, soja y trigo por métodos convencionales con agroquímicos en el Estado de Paraná, Brasil. Se obtuvieron datos de los insumos y maquinaria utilizada, y se realizó el inventario de ciclo de vida. Los resultados muestran que el mayor impacto energético y de gases de efecto invernadero se encuentra, para maíz y trigo, en el uso de fertilizantes, y para la soja en el uso de herbicidas. El combustible utilizado en la maquinaria agrícola es el tercero en importancia tanto en energía como en GEI. Se evaluó además la mano de obra en la finca, determinando que su incidencia es mínima comparada con otros impactos. Los resultados por kg de producto en la puerta de la finca muestran valores similares a los obtenidos en producciones comparables de Europa y Estados Unidos. Del análisis se concluye que la sustentabilidad de la provisión alimentaria actual depende fuertemente de insumos externos a las fincas. Sustainable food production will be an essential activity in a future scenario of growing population and resource scarcity. The food production sector involves biological, chemical and physical processes that impact the environment in different ways: by energy demand, greenhouse gas (GHG) emission, eutrophication, use of pesticides and pharmaceuticals, deforestation, and desertification, among others. Thus, the environmental impacts and sustainability of food production and consumption are of challenging complexity. For this paper, we studied energy usage and GHG emission in the production of maize, wheat and soybeans by current conventional methods that include the use of agrochemicals in the State of Paraná, Brazil. Detailed data on agricultural inputs and machinery were obtained, and life cycle inventories performed. The results show that fertilizers contribute with the highest GHG emissions and energy impacts in maize and wheat production, while herbicides contribute the most in the soybean production. Fuel is third in importance regarding energy and GHG impact. Labor was found to cause a negligible impact on such productions. Impacts on farm gate value per kilogram are similar to those in the USA and Europe. We conclude that the sustainability of the current food production depends largely on external inputs. The Uruguay River is receptor of pollutants, such as pesticides, from agriculture activities along its course. The present study reports concentration levels of organochlorinate, organophosphorus, and other pesticides in water and suspended solids in nine sampling sites of the Uruguay River. Data analyses included principal component analysis (PCA) to assess differences between sampling sites contamination. Most of the tested pesticides were ubiquitous due to the widely use in the chemical control of pests implemented in the region. Detected concentrations of aldrin, chlordane, dieldrin, endrin, heptachlor epoxide, lindane, 4,4′-DDT, endosulfan, chlorpyrifos, diazinon, methyl-parathion, and malathion were found to be over regional and international concentration level guidelines, according to the European Union, the US Environmental Protection Agency, or the Argentinean Secretariat of Environment and Sustainable Development. El objetivo del trabajo fue analizar el impacto de diferentes dosis de compost, obtenido a partir de los residuos de grasas de la industria láctea mezclado con un sustrato comercial a base de turba (CS) en el desarrollo de plántulas de pimiento. Además, se buscó determinar los efectos de estas mezclas sobre la germinación de las plántulas de pimiento. El compost de grasas (FC) se obtuvo mediante el compostaje aeróbico de las aguas residuales de dicha industria mezcladas con restos de poda (chips de madera y césped). A fin de comprobar la madurez del compost, y de esta forma poder ser aplicado como sustrato, se preparó un extracto acuoso del mismo y se analizó su fitotoxicidad en la germinación de semillas y desarrollo radicular. El resultado obtenido indicó un 99,7% de germinación relativa de las semillas y 74,10% de índice de germinación. Diferentes medios de cultivo se prepararon mezclando 0, 10, 20 y 40% de FC con CS. Los resultados mostraron que la aplicación de FC en CS, respectivamente, produjeron el aumento de la materia seca (DM) de las plantas. Las plántulas germinadas y desarrolladas en FC 40 alcanzaron 250 mg planta-1 de MS. La aplicación de FC en la germinación y el desarrollo de las plántulas mostró una notable mejoría en cuanto al desarrollo en general, DM de la planta, relación altura / diámetro en tallo, área foliar y la concentración de clorofilas totales. The present article addresses the quantification of damping in a parametric pendulum, with a view on further applications in the design of energy harvesting devices. Detailed new experimental data is obtained for such purpose, and a novel mathematical model is presented. Linear and quadratic viscous damping and also dry friction are taken into account. To introduce the dry friction component, the pendulum axis is mounted on ball bearings. This is considered as a very realistic situation of a harvester. Damping parameters are determined by minimizing the difference between numerical and experimental time histories. It is shown that the damping model here presented is more adequate to replicate experiments than commonly used linear models, which consider only a linear viscous damping term characterized by means of free decay tests. It is also pointed that linear models are not adequate for refined studies, since they can lead to erroneous predictions of rotation zones, and consequently to wrong considerations in the design of pendulum harvesters. Nanoporous iron oxide ceramics were studied for the removal of virus contamination from water. Supported and unsupported iron oxide nanostructured hematite was fabricated by a green chemistry route from ferroxane nanoparticles. The material had a surface area of approximately 30 m2/g and a mean pore size of 65 nm. Bacteriophage P22 was chosen as a model for human virus. The kinetics and equilibrium of the attachment process was investigated. P22 adsorption isotherms on iron oxide were described by the Freundlich equation. Batch experiments resulted in 1.5 LRVs. Removal proceeded rapidly for the first 7 h; next, a diffusion-limited stage occurred. Dynamic attachment experiments demanded extensive recirculation to achieve significant reduction levels. Up to 3 LRV were observed. The enhanced performance can be explained by the higher iron oxide area available and the facilitated access to inner porosity sites that were previously unavailable due to slow diffusion. The role of electrostatic interactions in the attachment mechanisms was confirmed by the dependence of the isotherm on the ionic strength of the suspension medium. P22 bacteriophage is expected to attach to the iron oxide by electrostatic forces up to a pH of 6.5. DLVO theory predicts moderately well the interaction energies between P22 particles themselves and between the phage and the ceramic. The aim of this work is to study biodiesel production using Butia Yatay coconut oil. This oil has acid values between 109 and 140 mg KOH/g, and phosphorus content in the order of 600 ppm. A three-step degumming pre-treatment of the raw material was adjusted in order to decrease the phosphorus content to approximately 200 ppm. Afterwards, a two-step esterification followed by transesterification was required in order to obtain a high-quality product. The esterification kinetics was studied including the simultaneous reactions that take place during the esterification of free fatty acids: autocatalysis, triacylglycerides hydrolysis, transesterification, and the reaction of sulphuric acid with the alcohol, being the most important ones. The kinetic parameters for the esterification and autocatalysis reactions were also obtained, being different compared to sunflower oil, due to the presence of short chain fatty acids. The kinetic constant for the esterification reaction rapidly decreases as a function of time, due to the consumption of the catalyst by the alkyl-sulphate formation reaction. The technologies conventionally used for biodiesel purification imply high consumptions of both energy and water. In the present work, biodiesel was produced by transesterification using a very active calcium glyceroxide catalyst and purified using water-free processes. The study focused on soaps removal that was the main product impurity. The best results were obtained when the crude biodiesel (methyl ester content of 90.2–91.2 wt.% and calcium content of 372–393 ppm) was pretreated with Na2CO3 and afterward treated by an ion-exchange resin (6 wt.%) or a ceramic membrane (0.1 μm). The purification was effective using biodiesel produced from both soybean oil and waste frying oil and the quality of the product agreed with the one obtained using the conventional water washing process. The effectiveness of the treatment could be explained by calcium elimination through precipitation as CaCO3 during pretreatment and sodium soaps removal by absorption into the resin or filtration by the ceramic membrane, according to the micelle formation mechanism. Understanding the behavior of bentonite dispersions is of remarkable importance in many industrial and engineering applications. Dispersion behavior depends on interparticle interactions. These mechanisms are influenced by the volumetric content of solid particles, ionic concentration in suspending fluid, ion valence, and pH. In this research, natural sodium bentonite dispersions were analyzed. Tests were performed in dispersions prepared with different volumes of particles in solutions of sodium chloride, calcium chloride, and magnesium sulphate with different concentrations. The rheology of dispersions was analyzed by fitting three rheological models, namely the power law, Bingham plastic, and Herschel-Bulkley models. Changes in shear stress and model parameters with ionic strength were analyzed. The observed behavior was interpreted in terms of particle-particle association and was later confirmed by computing the Derjaguin, Landau, Verwey and Oberbeek (DLVO) interparticle interaction energy. Finally, electroviscous effects were analyzed by computing the importance of the electroviscous parameter considering Einstein's equation and the Dougherty-Krieger equation. The electroviscous parameter was found to decrease with the increase in ionic concentration. The influence of ion type had a negligible effect on the electroviscous parameter. One of the problems that mining represents in relation to the natural watercourses is the possible formation of what we call acid mine drainage, which consists in the emission or formation of water effluents of great acidity, usually rich in sulfate and with variable contents in heavy metals. The drainage mentioned is developed from the metal sulfide and sulfate leaching. Researches about the creation of acid drainage suggest that the formation of these depends directly on various factors: primary mineralogy (neutralizer sulfides and minerals), water presence (whether), oxygen diffusion, grain size, microbiological interaction (bacterium), among others. To study these variables and to relate them with geological factors, static (Acid-Base Accounting) and dynamic (Humidity Cell) tests have been developed, among others. The mentioned tests are applied to a case of a gold deposit situated in the Province of San Juan, which is currently very argued because of its mining activity due to its leaching process. In the sterile mineral obtained from the process, kinetics tests were carried out in humidity cells to simulate the natural oxidation of the primary mineral samples. In the obtained leaching, pH values closer to neutrality and a limited solution metal presence were detected, indicating the neutralization ability due to the carbonates ores presence. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the aptitude of two residual soils for the remediation of groundwater contaminated by arsenic (As). Batch and soil column tests were performed to evaluate removal of As from water. Permeable soil columns were prepared with mixtures of sand (90%) and two lateritic soils (10%). Results showed that removal of As in batch tests ranged from 95-99% when using a solid-liquid ratio equal to 1:10. Experimental results obtained in the soil column tests and calibrated simulation models showed that the amount of water that can be decontaminated depends on the initial As concentration and the flow rate. Maximum adsorption capacities in bath test and removal efficiency in soil columns tests clearly relates with the amount of iron compounds in the solid phase. The quality of residual soil samples are related to a high iron content to favor As removal and low clay-size particle content to achieve acceptable flow rates for water purification in low-cost permeable filters and permeable reactive barriers. The optimization of a corrugated wall photocatalytic reactor for air treatment was addressed using the concept of efficiencies in series. A new concept has been introduced: the inner incidence efficiency, associated with the internal configuration of the reactor (for instance, the folding angle in the considered case). The goal of the study was to obtain an optimum for the folding angle, subjected to certain constraints: fixed reactor volume, radiation flux, and gas flow rate. Previous experimentally determined degradation kinetics of a gaseous pollutant was used in the reactor modeling. The simulations of the reactor were performed computationally by using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) package. The results showed opposed behaviors for the relative catalytic area per unit window area and the relative incident flux with the folding angle. An experimental comparative study of different meshes as support materials for photocatalytic applications in gas phase is presented. The photocatalytic oxidation of dichloromethane in air was addressed employing different coated meshes in a laboratory-scale, continuous reactor. Two fiberglass meshes and a stainless steel mesh were studied regarding the catalyst load, adherence, and catalytic activity. Titanium dioxide photocatalyst was immobilized on the meshes by dip-coating cycles. Results indicate the feasibility of the dichloromethane elimination in the three cases. When the number of coating cycles was doubled, the achieved conversion levels were increased twofold for stainless steel and threefold for the fiberglass meshes. An alternative for commercial Raman-Optical Time Domain Reflectometry (OTDR) distributed temperature sensors is presented, where a pseudorandom pulse sequence is used to increase the signal to noise ratio. Additionally, a deconvolution algorithm is proposed to eliminate distortions in the reconstruction arising from the real correlation properties of the sensing signal. An improvement in SNR of a factor 11 respect to the Raman-OTDR method at the same peak power was achieved, allowing 2 m and 1.5 °C resolution in a 6 s measurement using a 90-mW Continuous wave semiconductor laser. El incremento en la eutrofización de los cuerpos de agua es un problema mundial. En Uruguay, los tambos contribuyen a la eutrofización del agua y a la proliferación de cianobacterias. En la tesis se estudió en el laboratorio la co-digestión anaeróbica mesófila (30 ºC) de cianobacterias naturales (CB) y efluente de tambo (EF), utilizando la metodología del potencial bioquímico de metano (BMP) por triplicado. Las pruebas BMP mostraron buenos rendimientos con respecto al potencial de producción de biogás de los sustratos. Las mezclas con diferentes proporciones de CB:EF tuvieron un potencial similar: por ejemplo ensayos con solamente CB, mezcla 1:1 (CB:EF en gramos de sólidos volátiles) y solamente EF devolvieron un potencial de biogás similar, de 554±50, 605±47 y 608±48 NmLbiogas/gVSsubstrato respectivamente. El contenido de metano en el biogás se estimó en un 60%. Lodo anaeróbico de una laguna de tratamiento del tambo fue utilizado como inóculo de la digestión. Relaciones inóculo-sustrato (ISR) de 2, 3 y 4 mostraron rendimientos similares. Finalmente, se utilizó glicerol para equilibrar la relación carbono-nitrógeno (C/N). An Aerobic Granular Sludge (AGS) and an Activated Sludge (AS) laboratory-scale reactors started-up with seed sludge originated from the same wastewater, and fed with the same synthetic wastewater containing Escherichia coli, were operated and weekly sampled during four months in order to compare the removal of Escherichia coli between both set-ups. Both reactors were aimed to remove organic matter, nitrogen, and phosphate. The removal of organic matter and phosphate was successful, whereas nitrogen removal efficiency fluctuated in the AGS reactor, and was never achieved in the AS reactor. In order to enhance nitrification, several changes were introduced in the AS cycle, whilst the AGS cycle was maintained unchanged during the entire research period, only varying DO concentrations. E. coli was added to the reactors after 1.5 months of operation, and weekly samples were analysed with the spread-plate technique. The log removal of E. coli for the AGS reactor was above 1.5 for the first five weeks of E. coli addition, presenting a maximum of 3.5 log removal and an average of 2.5 log removal. After the fifth week, the removal dropped to zero, and started to slowly increase again, achieving 2.5 log removal by the end of the research period. The removal of E. coli was mainly attributed to predation of E. coli cells by stalked ciliates of the genus Vorticella during aeration. Vorticella were observed by optical microscopy attached to granules, in high amounts during the periods of high E. coli removal, and in lower amounts when E. coli removal decreased. The factors affecting the fluctuations in the presence of ciliates were analysed, finding as the most relevant an event of high copper concentration and the possible depletion of particulate food eroded from the granules. Analysing the concentration of E. coli in the sludge and supernatant, it was deducted that there was attachment of some E. coli cells to the granules. When E. coli removal was significant, on average, 26% of the influent E. coli ended-up in the sludge and 0.2% in the effluent. E. coli removal in the AS reactor was never achieved. Despite AGS and AS reactors were started with seed sludge originated from the same influent wastewater, ciliates were not detected in the AS reactor on samples taken after two months of operation onwards. It was assumed that the main cause of the absence of ciliates was the lack of particulate food. Attachment of E. coli cells to bacterial flocs was not detected neither, this might be attributed to the high SRT of the reactor. A basic analysis of the applicability of AGS treatment in two case studies in Uruguay was performed, finding that the technology would be in principle suitable for the treatment of the wastewater of both localities aiming to comply the Uruguayan standards. In the case of Mercedes, it seems that an AGS WWTP would result in a more cost-effective solution than a conventional treatment. However, a pre-design and cost analysis should be performed to confirm this hypothesis. Montevideo’s wastewater has a high conductivity, and despite according to lab-scale research, AGS performance would not be affected by its level of salinity, the suitability of the technology for Montevideo’s wastewater would only be confirmed after AGS is proven to be successful in treating wastewater with these characteristics. South America has a large proportion of wetlands compared with other continents. While most of these wetlands were conserved in a relatively good condition until a few decades ago, pressures brought about by land use and climate change have threaten their integrity in recent years. The aim of this article is to provide a bibliometric analysis of the available scientific literature relating to the remote sensing of wetlands in South America. From 1960 to 2015, 153 articles were published in 63 different journals, with the number of articles published per year increasing progressively since 1990. This rise is also paralleled by an increase in the contribution of local authors. The most intensively studied regions are the wetland macrosystems of South American mega-rivers: the Amazon and Paraná Rivers, along with the Pantanal at the headwaters of Paraguay River. Few studies spanned more than two countries. The most frequent objectives were mapping, covering all types of wetlands with optical data, and hydrology, focusing on floodplain wetlands with microwave data as the preferred data source. The last decade substantial growth reflects an increase in technological and scientific capacities. Nevertheless, the state of the art regarding the remote sensing of wetlands in South America remains enigmatic. Fundamental questions and guidelines which may contribute to the understanding of the functioning of these ecosystems are yet to be fully defined and there is considerable dispersion in the use of data and remote-sensing approaches. The present study aims at proposing a kinetic model that can capture the complexity and non-linear nature of the Fenton and photo-Fenton processes in the degradation of a model pollutant. Moreover, the proposed model is also able to account for the effect of the Local Volumetric Rate of Photon Absorption (LVRPA), depending on the radiation field within the annular photoreactor and consequently including the reactor dimensions and lamp characteristics. Paracetamol (PCT) was selected as model pollutant, because it is widely used as antipyretic and analgesic. Three kinetic parameters, accounting for the Fenton-like reaction and the hydroxyl radical attack to hydrogen peroxide and paracetamol, were estimated. Gymnopilus pampeanus (GP) is a mushroom consumed in Argentina. Spent Populus sawdust (SPS) obtained from the cultivation of GP was used to test methane production. The effect of two substrate/inoculums (S/I) ratios was analysed. Three treatments were carried out, T1: 80% SPS + 20% I, T2: 40% SPS + 60% I and T3: 40% PS (Populus sawdust) + 60% I. After 105 days the cumulative biogas production resulted in 201.2 and 147.8 mL/g VS for T2 and T1 respectively. Methane production increased 62.2% when S/I decreased 83.3% (112.9 and 71.7 mL/g VS for T1 and T2 respectively) while for treatments which used the same percentage of inoculums (60%) the fungal action on the sawdust improved methane production in 970%. Regarding the kinetics of methane production, Gompertz equation demonstrated a good performance of the adjustment of experimental data (R2 > 0.98) and the values of the kinetic parameters indicated that SPS structure showed better accessibility than PS to the methanogenic system. The long time of adaptation (32.2 days) and the low methane production rate (1.7 mL/g VS d) observed in SPS, revealed that the methane production is still not enough for energy purposes. Aunque la lu natural es altamente deseable en una neonatología, debe ser cuidadosamente diseñada de acuerdo a las diferentes cantidades de radiación solar incidente a lo largo del año para minimizar los problemas de control asociados a la misma. En el marco de un asesoramiento técnico para la remodelación del sector neonatología del Hospital Humberto Notti (Mendoza, Argentina), se evaluó el comportamiento de la luz natural de acuerdo a la remodelación propuesta por la institución. Por medio de simulaciones dinámicas se analizó el porcentaje de espacio que presenta iluminancias entre 200-600 lx más del 50% del tiempo de disponibilidad de luz natural (UDI). Este diagnóstico indicó la baja eficiencia de los sistemas de control solar empleados. Landfill gas (LFG) management is one of the most important tasks for landfill operation and closure because of its impact in potential global warming. The aim of this work is to present a case history evaluating an LFG capture and treatment system for the present landfill facility in Cordoba, Argentina. The results may be relevant for many developing countries around the world where landfill gas is not being properly managed. The LFG generation is evaluated by modeling gas production applying the zero order model, Landfill Gas Generation Model (LandGEM - EPA), Scholl Canyon model and triangular model. Variability in waste properties, weather and landfill management conditions are analyzed in order to evaluate the feasibility of implementing different treatment systems. The results show the advantages of capturing and treating LFG in order to reduce the emissions of gases responsible for global warming and to determine the revenue rate needed for the project´s financial requirements. This particular project reduces by half the emission of equivalent tons of CO2 compared with the situation where there is no gas treatment. In addition, the study highlights the need for a change in the electricity prices if it is to be economically feasible to implement the project in the current Argentine electricity market. Implications: Methane has 23 times more greenhouse gas potential than carbon dioxide. Because of that is of great importance to adequately manage biogas emissions from landfills. In addition to that it is environmentally convenient to use this product as an alternative energy source since it prevents methane emissions while prevents fossil fuel consumption minimizing carbon dioxide emissions. Performed analysis indicated that biogas capturing and energy generation implies three times less equivalent carbon dioxide emissions, however a change in the Argentinean electrical market fees are required to guarantee the financial feasibility of the project. The island city country of Singapore served as a model to validate the use of host-associated Bacteroidales 16S rRNA gene marker assays for identifying sources of fecal pollution in the urban tropical environment of Southeast Asia. A total of 295 samples were collected from sewage, humans, domesticated animals (cats, dogs, rabbits and chicken), and wild animals (birds, monkeys and wild boars). Samples were analyzed by real time PCR using five human-associated assays (HF183-SYBR Green, HF183, BacHum, BacH and B. thetaiotaomicron α-1-6, mannanase (B. theta), one canine-associated assay (BacCan), and a total Bacteroidales assay (BacUni). The best performing human-associated assay was B. theta with a diagnostic sensitivity of 69% and 100% in human stool and sewage, respectively, and a specificity of 98%. BacHum achieved the second highest sensitivity and specificity for human stool at 65% and 91%, respectively. The canine-associated Bacteroidales assay (BacCan) had a sensitivity and specificity above 80% and was validated for tracking fecal pollution from dogs. BacUni demonstrated a sensitivity and specificity of 100% for mammals, thus BacUni was confirmed for total Bacteroidales detection in the region. We showed for the first time that rabbit fecal samples cross-react with human-associated assays (HF183-SYBR Green, HF183, BacHum and BacH) and with BacCan. Our findings regarding the best performing human-associated assays differ from those reported in Bangladesh and India, which are geographically close to Southeast Asia, and where HF183 and BacHum were the preferred assays, respectively. En la cuenca del Sauce Chico el uso del agua de riego es desordenado, conduciendo a los productores a reclamar al gobierno la realización de estudios de sistematización y obras de regulación de caudales. El estudio analiza la variabilidad temporal de la disponibilidad y aptitud de las aguas del curso principal y se relaciona la oferta hídrica con la demandada para riego. Se analizaron estadísticamente registros históricos diarios de un limnígrafo. Esto permitió calcular los porcentajes de probabilidad de ocurrencia de los caudales medios mensuales. Registros meteorológicos permitieron determinar los requerimientos de riego de los cultivos con la ayuda del CROPWAT 8.0. La evaluación de la calidad de las aguas superficiales se realizó en 8 sitios, aplicando la clasificación del Proyecto IPG-INTA. Durante los meses de enero, febrero, junio, julio, agosto y diciembre el escurrimiento medio no supera al módulo anual. Los meses (diciembre y enero) de mayor demanda de agua utilizada para regar los cultivos coinciden con el período de los caudales más bajos, resultando insuficiente, aún con una probabilidad del 50 % de los caudales disponibles y con eficiencias de riego del 70 %. El agua utilizada para riego es de excelente calidad. In the basin of Sauce Chico the use of irrigation water is disorganized, leading producers to claim the government to undertake systematization studies and flow regulation works. The study analyzes the temporal variability of the availability and suitability of the waters of the main channel, and relates the water supply to the amount of water demanded for irrigation. Historical daily records registered by a limnigraph were analyzed statistically. That allowed calculating percentages of probability of occurrence of the monthly average flows. Meteorological records allowed determining the requirements for crop irrigation with the aid of CROPWAT 8.0. The quality of surface water was evaluated at 8 sampling stations, applying the classification IPG-INTA Project. During the months of January, February, June, July, August and December, the average runoff does not exceed the annual module. The months of greater demand (December and January) for irrigation water coincide with the period of the lowest flow rates, resulting insufficient, even with a probability of 50% of available flows and irrigation efficiencies of 70%. Argentina has been among the world leaders in the production and export of agricultural products since the 1990s. The Carcarañá River Lower Basin (CRLB), a cropland of the Pampas region supplied by extensive rainfall, is located in an area with few streamgauging and other hydrologic/water-quality stations. Therefore, limited hydrologic data are available resulting in limited water-resources assessment. This work explores the application of Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model to the CRLB in the Santa Fe province of the Pampas region. The analysis of field and remote-sensing data characterizing hydrology, water quality, soil types, land use/land cover, management practices, and crop yield, guarantee a comprehensive SWAT modeling approach. A combined manual and automated calibration and validation process incorporating sensitivity and uncertainty analysis is performed using information concerning interior watershed processes. Eleven N/P fertilizer rates are selected to simulate the impact of N fertilizer on crop yield, plant uptake, as well as runoff and leaching losses. Different indices (partial factor productivity, agronomic efficiency, apparent crop recovery efficiency of applied nutrient, internal utilization efficiency, and physiological efficiency) are considered to assess nitrogen-use efficiency. The overall quality of the fit is satisfactory considering the input data limitations. This work provides, for the first time in Argentina, a reliable tool to simulate yield response to soil quality and water availability capable to meet defined environmental targets to support decision making on planning public policies and private activities on the Pampas region. The presence and transport of emerging Engineered Nano Particles (ENPs) in the environment is driven by combination of multiple factors comprising their size, charge and aggregation/agglomeration rate along with interactions with different soil types. Due to the complexity of the soil, it is difficult to associate an exact concentration with the possible transport pathways, interactions and transformation mechanisms. Major uncertainties arise with the increased number of extraction and filtration steps required for determining the exact toxicity doses of ENPs. Due to these issues, TiO2 and Ag behavior, characterization, transport, and environmental effects in soils are still not clear. In soils, TiO2 and Ag have been mainly reported to be present in the surroundings of point sources and are driven by their aggregation/agglomeration rate in combination with different soil types. TiO2 and Ag are mainly transported by interstitial water depending on their zeta-potential in the local soil. Along the transport route, TiO2 and Ag undergo alteration in dissolution, corrosion, redox reaction and coatings with the soil matrix. Their mobility is better across mineral soil in comparison to soil rich in organic colloids. The bioavailability gets modified and, in consequence, they are retained until complete degradation of the organic matrix. Depending on the soil matrix composition in terms of water content, minerals, and biological structure, the current most used methods for TiO2 and Ag characterization are FFFF and UV spectroscopy coupled with ICP-MS and LCMS/MS. La protesta sobre las nuevas tarifas del gas natural es similar a la que ocurrió en 2008 con los aumentos propuestos en ese momento. También son similares los argumentos judiciales, que en 2008 frenaron una parte sustancial del aumento, justamente el que correspondía a gas importado y a las categorías de mayor consumo. En 2016, con las tarifas aún más atrasadas que en 2008, seguimos sin identificar el verdadero problema en los dos intentos de recomposición, y que es: la baja eficiencia térmica de las construcciones conduce a consumos muy altos, aun en viviendas y emprendimientos pequeños. No es válida la hipótesis “a mayor consumo, mayor poder adquisitivo”. Ésta sí sería válida si los edificios contaran con aislamiento térmico adecuado. En lo que sigue se resume un estudio de caso para la ciudad de Bariloche, de clima frío, y que debido a la falta de calidad térmica conduce a consumos de gas natural promedio en viviendas de 5.000 m3 /año. Firewood is the major fuel for household heating in south-central Chile and combustion of wood is the major source of air pollution by particulate matter (PM) emissions in this region. This paper discusses various strategies for lowering emissions from household wood combustion and their effectiveness in reducing air contamination. A survey of 2025 households and previous analysis performed with these data showed large consumption of wood fuel for heating in dwellings in Valdivia. The main variable identified is the low thermal efficiency of household envelope. Low efficiency of household envelope, low comfort, and a large share of income dedicated to energy, determines a high level of energy poverty. We have modeled the thermal retrofitting of dwellings under three efficiency scenarios, including stoves' and house's envelope improvements. Retrofitting houses led to energy poverty alleviation; in contrast, improvement of heating appliances alone does not alleviate energy poverty nor improve indoor comfort. Fil: Schueftan, Alejandra. Las represas hidroeléctricas surgen como una alternativa al uso de energía del petróleo para la obtención de energía eléctrica, ya que tienen una huella ecológica considerablemente inferior a la de los combustibles fósiles. Sin embargo, no siempre el resultado final cumple con esta premisa y muchas grandes represas no han satisfecho los objetivos para las que fueron construidas y/o han causado impactos ecológicos y sociales imprevistos El artículo discute las posibles consecuencias sociales y ambientales de las represas y sugiere estrategias para evitarlas. En este trabajo se han evaluado doce sistemas de tratamiento descentralizado de aguas residuales domésticas ubicados en distintos sectores del área metropolitana del Valle de Lerma, en la provincia de Salta (Argentina).Se muestrearon los efluentes de tres tipos de sistemas: (A) Cámara séptica; (B) Cámara séptica y reactor UASB; (C) Cámara séptica, UASB y filtro lento. Los resultados muestran que en términos de DQO los sistemas cumplen con la normativa aplicable para volcamiento en pozos absorbentes o absorción por suelo, siendo el sistema de tipo A el que mostro mayor concentración de DQO. Los niveles de coliformes fecales fueron altos en todos los sistemas evaluados, por lo que sería necesaria una etapa final de desinfección a los fines de minimizar los riesgos de contaminación de cuerpos de agua y afectaciones a la salud humana. Los sistemas descentralizados podrían ser una opción válida a ser tenida en cuenta formalmente en la planificación territorial y urbana en el área metropolitana del Valle de Lerma (AMVL). Sin embargo, es necesario profundizar la evaluación del funcionamiento de los sistemas, analizar las perspectivas sociales existentes y avanzar en la construcción de un marco legal que de formalidad y control a estas alternativas tecnológicas. In this paper was evaluated twelve decentralized treatment systems of domestic wastewater located in different sectors of the metropolitan area of the Valle de Lerma, in the province of Salta (Argentina). Have been sampled three types of systems: (A) septic tank; (B) septic tank and UASB reactor; (C) Septic tank, UASB and slow filter. The results show that in terms of COD all systems comply with the regulations applicable to final disposal in wells or absorption by ground, with a system type A which showed higher concentration of COD. Fecal coliform levels were high in all systems evaluated, so a final disinfection stage coul be necessary in order to minimize the risks of contamination of water bodies and human health. Decentralized systems could be a valid option to be formally taken into account in territorial and urban planning in the AMVL. However, it is necessary to deepen the performance evaluation of systems, assess existing social perspectives and progress in building a legal and formal framework to control the performance of these technological alternatives. Las crisis energéticas que se han vivido internacionalmente y a nivel regional, renovaron el interés en las energías renovables en el marco de la sustentabilidad, destacándose la promoción de la iluminación natural como una de las estrategias de diseño bioclimático. Para analizar, desarrollar y transferir estas interacciones donde la iluminación natural es protagonista, diferentes enfoques disciplinarios se interrelacionan para su óptima aplicación. Una de ellas dio lugar a implementar una aplicación de iluminación natural en construcciones de espacios para la propagación agámica de plantas.os dispositivos innovativos de iluminación natural representan actualmente una oportunidad de aportar respuestas de desarrollo regional replicable de uso de energía renovable para iluminación interior diurna. No son de aplicación limitada a edificios residenciales (viviendas y edificios públicos) y pueden resolver problemas asociados a los altos costos de energía en la producción, como en el presente caso, de plantas. Se ha diseñado un dispositivo anidólico que pretende optimizar el uso de luz natural en una aplicación que requiere niveles altos (1500 a 3000 lux). El estudio aquí expuesto examinó el potencial de las características del perfil urbano -morfología y materialidad- para disminuir las temperaturas urbanas. El objetivo consistió en identificar pautas de diseño y rehabilitación urbana, que permitan densificar áreas residenciales de la ciudad de Mendoza, Argentina. Para ello fueron simulados 32 escenarios con el programa ENVI-met 3.1, en los cuales se combinó distintos niveles de reflectancia solar (albedo) de los materiales que conforman las envolventes, diversas morfologías de perfil urbano, y presencia y ausencia de forestación dentro del canal vial, variando su orientación E-O y N-S. A partir de los resultados obtenidos por las simulaciones, se infiere que aquellos canales viales que presentan un comportamiento térmico más eficiente, están vegetados, y, morfológicamente, su perfil urbano es continuo sobre la línea municipal. En cuanto a la materialidad de sus envolventes, presentan niveles de albedo altos (0.7) en techos y pavimentos, y niveles de albedo bajo (0.3) en fachadas. This study examined the numerical modeling performance of morphological and materials alternatives for reducing urban temperatures. The aim was to identify design and urban regeneration guidelines that enable the densification of residential areas in the city of Mendoza, Argentina. To this end, using ENVI-met 3.1 software 32, scenarios were simulated that combined: different levels of solar reflectance (albedo) of building envelope materials, different urban profile morphologies, the presence or absence of forestation in urban canyons, and E-W/N-S variation in orientation. From the simulation results it can be inferred that there is more efficient thermal performance in the vegetated scenarios that morphologically have a continuous urban profile above the municipal building line. The Latin American Lidar Network, ALINE a.k.a LALINET is a federation lidar network established in 2008 which became a member of GALION/GAW program in 2013. Currently the network consists of 9 operational stations with the perspective of two more stations to be included. The network today covers more than 18 million Km2 and spans in latitude from -52o to 21o and in longitude from -78o to -47o . Las ventanas son un factor clave para el diseño de edificios energéticamente eficientes, en particular el área del marco que puede producir alta puentes térmicos. Este artículo trata de estimar con precisión la transferencia de calor a través de los marcos de ventana bajo la fluctuación de coeficientes de película. El modelo de la conductancia de una dimensión de trama utilizado tradicionalmente mediante la construcción de programas de simulación se analiza y se propone un modelo alternativo, que tiene en cuenta la morfología no plana de tramas estudiadas. Este modelo muestra un acuerdo positivo con los resultados obtenidos a partir de un programa de simulación de transferencia de calor de dos dimensiones, lo que demuestra que el rendimiento térmico de alta conductancia marcos no planas depende fuertemente de la relación entre el área de la superficie límite y el área del marco proyectada. De acuerdo a los resultados,2 K; sin embargo, las tramas con un factor U superior a 6,2 W / m 2 K necesita un modelo de conductancia alternativa que refleja mejor la naturaleza 2D de secciones de marco. Windows are a key factor for designing energy-efficient buildings, particularly the frame area that can produce high thermal bridging. This paper deals with accurately estimating heat transfer through window frames under fluctuating film coefficients. The one-dimensional frame conductance model traditionally used by building simulation programs is analysed and an alternative model is proposed, which takes into account the non-planar morphology of studied frames. This model shows a positive agreement with the results obtained from a two-dimensional heat-transfer simulation program, demonstrating that the thermal performance of high-conductance non-planar frames strongly depends on the ratio between the boundary surface area and the projected frame area. According to the results, the traditional conductance model seems to be suitable for all frames with a thermal transmittance lower than 5 W/m2K; however, frames with a U-factor higher than 6.2 W/m2K need an alternative conductance model that better reflects the 2D nature of frame sections. Las ciudades modifican los parámetros climáticos de su sitio de inserción. Una de las principales alteraciones es el aumento dela temperatura del aire que origina la isla de calor urbano (ICU). La ICU aumenta la demanda de energía eléctrica y disminuyela habitabilidad de los espacios interiores y exteriores. El presente trabajo busca determinar morfologías urbanas que permitanreducir el consumo de energía eléctrica y el efecto ICU. Para ello se seleccionaron, caracterizaron y monitorearon térmicamente,durante el periodo de verano, 9 canales viales urbanos (CVU) representativos del área metropolitana de Mendoza, Argentina.Con los indicadores utilizados para caracterizar los casos se construyó un modelo estadístico multivariado que predice latemperatura máxima (R2=0.85 y RSME=2.41%). Se utilizó este modelo para testear 20 posibles escenarios urbanos (16 CVU forestados y 4 sin forestación). Como resultado, se observa que la temperatura máxima en los casos forestados se mantiene hasta 12.7ºC más fresca versus los casos no forestados. Además, existe una diferencia de hasta 9.8ºC entre los casos forestados, lo cual revela el impacto sobre la respuesta térmica que puede generar la elección de una combinación urbana "forestación + morfología" al momento de diseñar y planificar los esquemas de desarrollo de una ciudad Cities modify the climatic parameters of the sites where they are located. One of the main changes is the increase in air temperature caused by urban heat islands (UHI). UHIs increase electricity demand and decrease the livability of indoor and outdoor spaces. This paper seeks to determine urban morphologies that help to reduce electric energy consumption and the UHI effect. To this end, 9 representative urban canyons (UC) in the metropolitan area of Mendoza, Argentina were selected, characterized and thermally monitored. With the indicators used to characterize the UCs, a predictive multivariate statistical model for maximum temperature was created (R2 = 0.85 and RSME = 2.41 %). This model was used to test 20 possible urban scenarios (16 forested and 4 non-forested UCs). As a result, it was observed that the maximum temperature in the forested cases remains up to 12.7 ºC cooler than in the non-forested cases. Additionally, there is a difference of up to 9.8 ºC between the forested cases. This reveals the impact that the choice of urban combinations "forestation + morphology" can have on thermal response when designing and planning city development schemes. Fil: Sosa, María Belén. Continuous monitoring of aerosol profiles using lidar is helpful for a quasi-real-time indication of aerosol concentration. For instance, volcanic ash concentration and its height distribution are essential information for plane flights. Depolarization ratio and multi-wavelength measurements are useful for characterizing aerosol types such as volcanic ash, smoke, dust, sea-salt, and air pollution aerosols. High spectral resolution lidar (HSRL) and Raman scattering lidar can contribute to such aerosol characterization significantly since extinction coefficients can be measured independently from backscattering coefficients. In particular, HSRL can measure aerosol extinction during daytime and nighttime with a high sensitivity. We developed an HSRL with the iodine filter method for continuous observation of aerosols at 532nm in the northern region of Argentina in the framework of the South American Environmental Atmospheric Risk Management Network (SAVER.Net)/SATREPS project. The laser wavelength of the HSRL was controlled by a feedback system to tune the laser wavelength to the center of an iodine absorption line. The stability of the laser wavelength with the system satisfied the requirement showing very small systematic errors in the retrieval of extinction and backscatter. Fil: Jin, Yoshitaka. Imazalil (IMZ) is a widely used fungicide for the post-harvest treatment of citrus, classified as “likely to be carcinogenic in humans” for EPA, that can be only partially removed by conventional biological treatment. Consequently, specific or combined processes should be applied to prevent its release to the environment. Biological treatment with adapted microorganism consortium, photo-Fenton, and coupled biological photo-Fenton processes were tested as alternatives for the purification of water containing high concentration of the fungicide and the coadjutants present in the commercial formulation. IMZ-resistant consortium with the capacity to degrade IMZ in the presence of a C-rich co-substrate was isolated from sludge coming from a fruit packaging company wastewater treatment plant. This consortium was adapted to resist and degrade the organics present in photo-Fenton-oxidized IMZ water solution. Bacteria colonies from the consortia were isolated and identified. The effect of H2O2 initial concentration and dosage on IMZ degradation rate, average oxidation state (AOS), organic acid concentration, oxidation, and mineralization percentage after photo-Fenton process was determined. The application of biological treatment to the oxidized solutions notably decreased the total organic carbon (TOC) in solution. The effect of the oxidation degree, limited by H2O2 concentration and dosage, on the percentage of mineralization obtained after the biological treatment was determined and explained in terms of changes in AOS. The concentration of H2O2 necessary to eliminate IMZ by photo-Fenton and to reduce TOC and chemical oxygen demand (COD) by biological treatment, in order to allow the release of the effluents to rivers with different flows, was estimated. Stratospheric poor ozone air masses related to the polar ozone hole overpass subpolar regions in the Southern Hemisphere during spring and summer seasons, resulting in increases of surface Ultraviolet Index (UVI). The impact of these abnormal increases in the ultraviolet radiation could be overestimated if clouds are not taking into account. The aim of this work is to determine the percentage of cases in which cloudiness attenuates the high UV radiation that would reach the surface in low total ozone column situations and in clear sky hypothetical condition for Río Gallegos, Argentina. For this purpose, we analysed UVI data obtained from a multiband filter radiometer GUV-541 (Biospherical Inc.) installed in the Observatorio Atmosférico de la Patagonia Austral (OAPA-UNIDEF (MINDEF - CONICET)) (51 °33´ S, 69 °19´ W), Río Gallegos, since 2005. The database used covers the period 2005-2012 for spring seasons. Measured UVI values are compared with UVI calculated using a parametric UV model proposed by Madronich (2007), which is an approximation for the UVI for clear sky, unpolluted atmosphere and low surface albedo condition, using the total ozone column amount, obtained from the OMI database for our case, and the solar zenith angle. It is observed that ∼76% of the total low ozone amount cases, which would result in high and very high UVI categories for a hypothetical (modeled) clear sky condition, are attenuated by clouds, while 91% of hypothetical extremely high UVI category are also attenuated. Activated carbons (ACs) with a highly developed porosity have been prepared from a lignocellulosic precursor (coffee husk) for environmental pollutant adsorption. Characterization results show that these materials exhibit a high amount oxygen groups and high specific surface area with micro mesopores. From SEM results we can see the collapse of large pores at longer activation times. The ACs obtained from coffee husk waste is a promising adsorbent material, with high adsorption capacity for the methylene blue dye (MB). Thus, the use of the coffee husk for AC preparation, with porosity development, showed as a good alternative for the waste transformation.
