The objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence of CKD in COPD patients using estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) based on creatinine (Cr) and cystatin C (Cys) levels. Methods: The prevalence of CKD and the values of various CKD-related parameters were compared between 108 stable COPD outpatients (COPD group) and a non-COPD control group consisting of 73 patients aged 60 years or more without a history of COPD or kidney disease. CKD was defined as an eGFR less than 60 mL/min/1.73 m2. Results: The Cr level was significantly higher in the COPD group, but eGFR based on serum Cr (eGFRCr) was not significantly different between the two groups (73.3±25.3 vs 79.7±15.5 mL/min/1.73 m2). Abstract

H3K9 trimethylation (H3K9me3) plays emerging roles in gene regulation, beyond its accumulation on pericentric constitutive heterochromatin. It remains a mystery why and how H3K9me3 undergoes dynamic regulation in male meiosis. Here, we identify a novel, critical regulator of H3K9 methylation and spermatogenic heterochromatin organization: the germline-specific protein ATF7IP2 (MCAF2). We show that in male meiosis, ATF7IP2 amasses on autosomal and X-pericentric heterochromatin, spreads through the entirety of the sex chromosomes, and accumulates on thousands of autosomal promoters and retrotransposon loci. On the sex chromosomes, which undergo meiotic sex chromosome inactivation (MSCI), the DNA damage response pathway recruits ATF7IP2 to X-pericentric heterochromatin, where it facilitates the recruitment of SETDB1, a histone methyltransferase that catalyzes H3K9me3. In the absence of ATF7IP2, male germ cells are arrested in meiotic prophase I. Analyses of ATF7IP2-deficient meiosis reveal the protein's essential roles in the maintenance of MSCI, suppression of retrotransposons, and global up-regulation of autosomal genes. We propose that ATF7IP2 is a downstream effector of the DDR pathway in meiosis that coordinates the organization of heterochromatin and gene regulation through the spatial regulation of SETDB1-mediated H3K9me3 deposition.

Abstract

We propose an upper bound on the Atiyah-Singer index in the effective action of string theory. For $E_8 \times E_8^\prime$ and $SO(32)$ heterotic string theories on smooth Calabi-Yau threefolds with line bundles, we find that the tadpole cancellation and supersymmetry conditions lead to an upper bound on the generation number of quarks and leptons as well as Higgs doublets. By taking into account the observed value of four-dimensional gauge couplings and the supergravity approximation, we explicitly evaluate the bound on favorable complete intersection Calabi-Yau threefolds. The bound can be extended to Calabi-Yau threefolds in the Kreuzer-Skarke database. Abstract

Voice conversion systems have made significant advancements in terms of naturalness and similarity in common voice conversion tasks. However, their performance in more complex tasks such as cross-lingual voice conversion and expressive voice conversion remains imperfect. In this study, we propose a novel approach that combines a jointly trained speaker encoder and content features extracted from the cross-lingual speech recognition model Whisper to achieve high-quality cross-lingual voice conversion. Additionally, we introduce a speaker consistency loss to the joint encoder, which improves the similarity between the converted speech and the reference speech. To further explore the capabilities of the joint speaker encoder, we use the phonetic posteriorgram as the content feature, which enables the model to effectively reproduce both the speaker characteristics and the emotional aspects of the reference speech.

61. Significantly fast spinodal decomposition and inhomogeneous nanoscale martensitic transformation in Ti–Nb–O alloys

Abstract

The β phase spinodal decomposition during continuous cooling in Ti‒Nb‒O alloys is investigated by the phase-field method. Addition of only a few at.%O to Ti‒23Nb (at.%) alloy remarkably increases the driving force of the β phase spinodal decomposition. During isothermal heat treatment at 1000 K and 1100 K in Ti‒23Nb‒3O (at.%) alloy, the β phase separates into β1 phase denoted as (Ti)1(O, Va)3 and β2 phase denoted as (Ti, Nb)1(Va)3, resulting in the formation of nanoscale concentration modulation. The phase decomposition progresses in 0.3‒20 ms. In Ti‒23Nb‒XO alloys (X = 1.0, 1.2, 2.0), the spinodal decomposition occurs during continuous cooling with the rate of 500 K s‒1, indicating that the spinodal decomposition occurs during water quenching in the alloys. It is assumed that there is a threshold value of oxygen composition for inducing the spinodal decomposition because it does not occur during continuous cooling in Ti‒23Nb‒0.6O (at.%) alloy. The concentration modulation introduced by the β phase decomposition has significant effect on the β→α” martensitic transformation. Hence, it seems that for controlling microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti‒Nb‒O alloys, careful control of heat treatment temperature and cooling rate condition is required.

Abstract

Asteroid systems such as binaries and pairs are indicative of physical properties and dynamical histories of the Small Solar System Bodies. Although numerous observational and theoretical studies have been carried out, the formation mechanism of asteroid pairs is still unclear, especially for near-Earth asteroid (NEA) pairs. We conducted a series of optical photometric and polarimetric observations of a small NEA 2010 XC$_{15}$ in 2022 December to investigate its surface properties. The rotation period of 2010 XC$_{15}$ is possibly a few to several dozen hours and color indices of 2010 XC$_{15}$ are derived as $g-r=0.435\pm0.008$, $r-i=0.158\pm0.017$, and $r-z=0.186\pm0.009$ in the Pan-STARRS system. The linear polarization degrees of 2010 XC$_{15}$ are a few percent at the phase angle range of 58$^{\circ}$ to 114$^{\circ}$. We found that 2010 XC$_{15}$ is a rare E-type NEA on the basis of its photometric and polarimetric properties. Taking the similarity of not only physical properties but also dynamical integrals and the rarity of E-type NEAs into account, we suppose that 2010 XC$_{15}$ and 1998 WT$_{24}$ are of common origin (i.e., asteroid pair). These two NEAs are the sixth NEA pair and first E-type NEA pair ever confirmed, possibly formed by rotational fission. We examine symmetries of chiral four-dimensional vacua of Type IIB flux compactifications with vanishing superpotential $W=0$. We find that the ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric MSSM-like and Pati-Salam vacua possess enhanced discrete symmetries in the effective action below the mass scale of stabilized complex structure moduli and dilaton. Abstract

A firm cognitive subject or ``individual'' is presupposed for the emergence of mind. However, with the development of recent information technology, the ``individual'' has become more dispersed in society and the cognitive subject has become increasingly unstable and adaptive, necessitating an update in our understanding of the ``individual''. Autopoiesis serves as a model of the cognitive subject, which is unstable and requires effort to maintain itself to adapt to the environment. In this study, we evaluated adaptivity for a highly extensible multi-particle system model Particle Lenia through the response perturbation. As a result, we found that Particle Lenia has a particle configuration that is both temporally unstable and has multiple stable states. Abstract

We conducted optical polarimetry and near-infrared spectroscopy of JAXA's Hayabusa2# mission target, (98943) 2001 CC21, in early 2023. Our new observations indicated that this asteroid has a polarimetric inversion angle of ~21 deg, absorption bands around 0.9 and 1.9 um, and a geometric albedo of 0.285 +- 0.083. All these features are consistent with those of S-type but inconsistent with L-type. Magnetic nanoparticles of Fe3O4 (MgNPs-Fe3O4) can enhance the delivery and efficacy of anticancer drugs. We investigated the effects of MgNPs-Fe3O4 or DTX alone, and in combination with prostate cancer cell growth in vitro, as well as with the mechanism underlying the cytotoxic effects. MgNPs-Fe3O4 caused dose-dependent increases in reactive oxygen species levels in DU145, PC-3, and LNCaP cells; 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine levels were also elevated. MgNPs-Fe3O4 alone reduced the viability of LNCaP and PC-3 cells; however, MgNPs-Fe3O4 enhanced the cytotoxic effect of a low dose of DTX in all three cell lines. MgNPs-Fe3O4 also augmented the percentage of DU145 cells undergoing apoptosis following treatment with low dose DTX. Expression of nuclear transcription factor κB in DU145 was not affected by MgNPs-Fe3O4 or DTX alone; however, combined treatment suppressed nuclear transcription factor κB expression. Abstract

An increasing number of companion robots have started reaching the public in the recent years. These robots vary in their appearance and behavior. Since these two factors can have an impact on lasting human–robot relationships, it is important to understand their effect for companion robots.We have conducted an experiment that evaluated the impact of a robot’s appearance and its behaviour in repeated interactions on its perceived empathy, trustworthiness and anxiety experienced by a human. The results indicate that a highly humanlike robot is perceived as less trustworthy and empathic than a more machinelike robot. Moreover, negative behaviour of a machinelike robot reduces its trustworthiness and perceived empathy stronger than for highly humanlike robot. In addition, we found that a robot which disapproves of what a human says can induce anxiety felt towards its communication capabilities. Our findings suggest that more machinelike robots can be more suitable as companions than highly humanlike robots. Moreover, a robot disagreeing with a human interaction partner should be able to provide feedback on its understanding of the partner’s message in order to reduce her anxiety.

Abstract

Current Spoken Dialogue Systems (SDSs) often serve as passive listeners that respond only after receiving user speech. To achieve human-like dialogue, we propose a novel future prediction architecture that allows an SDS to anticipate future affective reactions based on its current behaviors before the user speaks. In this work, we investigate two scenarios: speech and laughter. In speech, we propose to predict the user's future emotion based on its temporal relationship with the system's current emotion and its causal relationship with the system's current Dialogue Act (DA). In laughter, we propose to predict the occurrence and type of the user's laughter using the system's laughter behaviors in the current turn. Preliminary analysis of human-robot dialogue demonstrated synchronicity in the emotions and laughter displayed by the human and robot, as well as DA-emotion causality in their dialogue. Abstract

With the development of automatic speech recognition (ASR) and text-to-speech (TTS) technology, high-quality voice conversion (VC) can be achieved by extracting source content information and target speaker information to reconstruct waveforms. However, current methods still require improvement in terms of inference speed. In this study, we propose a lightweight VITS-based VC model that uses the HuBERT-Soft model to extract content information features without speaker information. Through subjective and objective experiments on synthesized speech, the proposed model demonstrates competitive results in terms of naturalness and similarity. Importantly, unlike the original VITS model, we use the inverse short-time Fourier transform (iSTFT) to replace the most computationally expensive part. Experimental results show that our model can generate samples at over 5000 kHz on the 3090 GPU and over 250 kHz on the i9-10900K CPU, achieving competitive speed for the same hardware configuration.
