Search

This write-up document is a summary of International workshop on the project for the extended hadron experimental facility which was held from March 26 to 28, 2018 at KEK Tokai Campus. This document is a collection of Letter Of Intents (LOIs) related to the proposed beam lines in the extended hadron experimental facility at J-PARC.

Photoproduction of the $\omega$ meson on the proton has been experimentally studied near the threshold. The total cross sections are determined at incident energies ranging from 1.09 to 1.15 GeV. The 1/2 and 3/2 spin-averaged scattering length $a_{\omega p}$ and effective range $r_{\omega p}$ between the $\omega$ meson and proton are estimated from the shape of the total cross section as a function of the incident photon energy: $a_{\omega p} = \left(-0.97^{+0.16_{\rm stat}}_{-0.16_{\rm stat}}{}^{+0.03_{\rm syst}}_{-0.00_{\rm syst}}\right)+i \left(0.07^{+0.15_{\rm stat}}_{-0.14_{\rm stat}}{}^{+0.17_{\rm syst}}_{-0.09_{\rm syst}}\right)$ fm and $r_{\omega p}=\left(+2.78^{+0.68_{\rm stat}}_{-0.54_{\rm stat}}{}^{+0.11_{\rm syst}}_{-0.13_{\rm syst}}\right)+i\left(-0.01^{+0.46_{\rm stat}}_{-0.50_{\rm stat}}{}^{+0.07_{\rm syst}}_{-0.00_{\rm syst}}\right)$ fm, resulting in a repulsive force. The real and imaginary parts for $a_{\omega p}$ and $r_{\omega p}$ are determined separately for the first time. We study $\eta$ photoproduction off the deuteron ($\gamma d\to\eta pn$) at a special kinematics: $\sim 0.94$ GeV of the photon beam energy and $\sim 0^\circ$ of the scattering angle of the proton. This kinematics is ideal to extract the low-energy $\eta$-nucleon scattering parameters such as $a_{\eta N}$ (scattering length) and $r_{\eta N}$ (effective range) because the $\eta$-nucleon elastic scattering is significantly enhanced. We show that if a ratio $R$, the $\gamma d\to\eta pn$ cross section divided by the $\gamma p\to\eta p$ cross section convoluted with the proton momentum distribution in the deuteron, is measured with 5% error, ${\rm Re}[a_{\eta N}]$ (${\rm Re}[r_{\eta N}]$) can be determined at the precision of $\sim\pm$0.1 fm ($\sim\pm$0.5 fm), significantly narrowing down the currently estimated range of the parameters. We observed a distinct peak in the $\Lambda p$ invariant mass spectrum of $^{3}{\rm He}(K^-, \, \Lambda p)n$, well below the mass threshold of $m_K + 2 m_p$. By selecting a relatively large momentum-transfer region $q = 350 \sim 650$ MeV/$c$, one can clearly separate the peak from the quasi-free process, $\overline{K}N \rightarrow \overline{K}N$ followed by the non-resonant absorption by the two spectator-nucleons $\overline{K}NN \rightarrow \Lambda N $. We found that the simplest fit to the observed peak gives us a Breit-Wigner pole position at $B_{\rm {\it Kpp}} = 47 \pm 3 \, (stat.) \,^{+3}_{-6} \,(sys.)$ MeV having a width $\Gamma_{\rm {\it Kpp}} = 115 \pm 7 \, (stat.) \,^{+10}_{-9} \,(sys.)$ MeV, and the $S$-wave Gaussian reaction form-factor parameter $Q_{\rm {\it Kpp}} = 381 \pm 14 \, (stat.)\,^{+57}_{-0} \,(sys.)$ MeV/$c$, as a new form of the nuclear bound system with strangeness -- "$K^-pp$"., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures

Coherent double neutral-pion photoproduction on the deuteron, $\gamma{d}${$\to$}$\pi^0\pi^0{d}$, has been experimentally studied at incident photon energies ranging from 0.75 to 1.15 GeV. The total cross section as a function of the $\gamma{d}$ center-of-mass energy shows resonance-like behavior, which peaks at approximately 2.47 and 2.63 GeV. The measured angular distribution of deuteron emission is rather flat, which cannot be reproduced by the kinematics of quasi-free $\pi^0\pi^0$ production with deuteron coalescence. In $\pi^0d $ invariant-mass distributions, a clear peak is observed at $2.14{\pm}0.01$ GeV$/c^2$ with a width of $0.09{\pm}0.01$ GeV$/c^2$. The spin-parity of this state is restricted to $1^+$, $2^+$ or $3^-$ from the angular distributions of the two $\pi^0$s. The present work shows strong evidence for the existence of an isovector dibaryon resonance with a mass of 2.14 GeV$/c^2$. The $2^+$ assignment is consistent with the theoretically predicted ${\cal{D}}_{12}$ state, and also with the energy dependence of the $\pi{d}$ partial-wave amplitude $^3\!P_2$ for the $\pi^{\pm}d${$\to$}$\pi^{\pm}d$ and $\pi^+d${$\to$}${pp}$ reactions., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

Evaluation of a wide variety of Feynman diagrams with multi-loop integrals and physical parameters and its comparison with high energy experiments are expected to investigate new physics beyond the Standard Model. We have been developing a direct computation method of multi-loop integrals of Feynman diagrams. One of features of our method is that we adopt the double exponential rule for numerical integrations which enables us to evaluate loop integrals with boundary singularities. Another feature is that in order to accelerate the numerical integrations with multi-precision calculations, we develop an accelerator system with Field Programmable Gate Array boards on which processing elements with dedicated logic for quadruple/hexuple/octuple precision arithmetic operations are implemented. In addition, we also develop a programming interface designed for easy use of the system. The development is continued for practical use of the system. The direct computation method(DCM) is developed to calculate the multi-loop amplitude for general masses and external momenta. The ultraviolet divergence is under control in dimensional regularization. In this paper we report on the progress of DCM to several scalar multi-loop integrals after the presentation in ACAT2016. Differential cross sections and photon-beam asymmetries for the gamma p -> pi- Delta++(1232) reaction have been measured for 0.7

We study the electronic structure of Tsai-type cluster-based quasicrystalline approximants, Au$_{64}$Ge$_{22}$Yb$_{14}$ (AGY-I), Au$_{63.5}$Ge$_{20.5}$Yb$_{16}$ (AGY-II), and Zn$_{85.4}$Yb$_{14.6}$ (Zn-Yb), by means of photoemission spectroscopy. In the valence band hard x-ray photoemission spectra of AGY-II and Zn-Yb, we separately observe a fully occupied Yb 4$f$ state and a valence fluctuation derived Kondo resonance peak, reflecting two inequivalent Yb sites, a single Yb atom in the cluster center and its surrounding Yb icosahedron, respectively. The fully occupied 4$f$ signal is absent in AGY-I containing no Yb atom in the cluster center. The results provide direct evidence for a heterogeneous valence state in AGY-II and Zn-Yb.

We report the measurement of the $\gamma p \rightarrow K^{+}\Lambda$ and $\gamma p \rightarrow K^{+}\Sigma^{0}$ reactions at SPring-8. The differential cross sections and photon-beam asymmetries are measured at forward $K^{+}$ production angles using linearly polarized tagged-photon beams in the range of $E_{\gamma}=1.5$--3.0 GeV. With increasing photon energy, the cross sections for both $\gamma p \rightarrow K^{+}\Lambda$ and $\gamma p \rightarrow K^{+}\Sigma^{0}$ reactions decrease slowly. Distinct narrow structures in the production cross section have not been found at $E_{\gamma}=1.5$--3.0 GeV. The forward peaking in the angular distributions of cross sections, a characteristic feature of $t$-channel exchange, is observed for the production of $\Lambda$ in the whole observed energy range. A lack of similar feature for $\Sigma^{0}$ production reflects a less dominant role of $t$-channel contribution in this channel. The photon-beam asymmetries remain positive for both reactions, suggesting the dominance of $K^{*}$ exchange in the $t$ channel. These asymmetries increase gradually with the photon energy, and have a maximum value of +0.6 for both reactions. Comparison with theoretical predictions based on the Regge trajectory in the $t$ channel and the contributions of nucleon resonances indicates the major role of $t$-channel contributions as well as non-negligible effects of nucleon resonances in accounting for the reaction mechanism of hyperon photoproduction in this photon energy regime., Comment: published version, two-column format, 10 pages, 8 figures

A large-acceptance spectrometer, Neutral Kaon Spectrometer 2 (NKS2), was newly constructed to explore various photoproduction reactions in the gigaelectronvolt region at the Laboratory of Nuclear Science (LNS, currently ELPH), Tohoku University. The spectrometer consisted of a dipole magnet, drift chambers, and plastic scintillation counters. NKS2 was designed to separate pions and protons in a momentum range of less than 1 GeV/$c$, and was placed in a tagged photon beamline. A cryogenic H$_{2}$/D$_{2}$ target fitted to the spectrometer were designed. The design and performance of the detectors are described. The results of the NKS2 experiment on analyzing strangeness photoproduction data using a 0.8--1.1 GeV tagged photon beam are also presented., Comment: 62 pages, 29 figues. Submitted to Nucl. Instrum. The differential cross sections and decay angular distributions for coherent $\phi$-meson photoproduction from helium-4 have been measured for the first time at forward angles with linearly polarized photons in the energy range $E_{\gamma} = \text{1.685-2.385 GeV}$. Thanks to the target with spin-parity $J^{P} = 0^{+}$, unnatural-parity exchanges are prohibited, and thus natural-parity exchanges can be investigated clearly. The decay asymmetry with respect to photon polarization is shown to be very close to the maximal value. This ensures the dominance ($> 94\%$) of natural-parity exchanges in this reaction. To evaluate the contribution from natural-parity exchanges to the forward cross section ($\theta = 0^\circ$) for the $\gamma p \rightarrow \phi p$ reaction near the threshold, the energy dependence of the forward cross section ($\theta = 0^\circ$) for the $\gamma {^{4}\text{He}} \rightarrow \phi {^{4}\text{He}}$ reaction was analyzed. The comparison to $\gamma p \rightarrow \phi p$ data suggests that enhancement of the forward cross section arising from natural-parity exchanges, and/or destructive interference between natural-parity and unnatural-parity exchanges is needed in the $\gamma p \rightarrow \phi p$ reaction near the threshold., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Differential cross sections at $t=t_{\text{min}}$ and decay asymmetries for the $\gamma p\rightarrow\phi p$ reaction have been measured using linearly polarized photons in the range 1.5 to 2.9 GeV. These cross sections were used to determine the Pomeron strength factor. The cross sections and decay asymmetries are consistently described by the $t$-channel Pomeron and pseudoscalar exchange model in the $E_{\gamma}$ region above 2.37 GeV. In the lower energy region, an excess over the model prediction is observed in the energy dependence of the differential cross sections at $t=t_{\text{min}}$. This observation suggests that additional processes or interference effects between Pomeron exchange and other processes appear near the threshold region., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures

Differential cross sections and photon beam asymmetries for the gamma p -> pi+ n reaction have been measured for 0.6

We develop a reaction model for $\eta$ photoproduction off the deuteron ($\gamma d\to\eta pn$), and study the reaction at a special kinematics, where the photon beam energy is $\sim 0.94$ GeV and the scattered proton is detected at $\sim 0^\circ$, for the purpose of determining the $\eta$-nucleon scattering length ($a_{\eta N}$) and effective range ($r_{\eta N}$). In this kinematics, the $\eta$-nucleon elastic rescattering is significantly enhanced while other background mechanisms being suppressed. We show that a ratio $R$, the $\gamma d\to\eta pn$ cross section divided by the $\gamma p\to\eta p$ cross section convoluted with the proton momentum distribution in the deuteron, has a very good resolving power of $a_{\eta N}$ and $r_{\eta N}$. We conclude that the $R$ data with 5% error, binned in 1 MeV width of the $\eta$-neutron invariant mass, can determine ${\rm Re}[a_{\eta N}]$ (${\rm Re}[r_{\eta N}]$) at the precision of $\sim\pm$0.1 fm ($\sim\pm$0.5 fm), significantly narrowing down the previously estimated ranges of the parameters. To arrive at the conclusion, it is essential to use the $\gamma d\to\eta pn$ reaction model equipped with elementary amplitudes that are well constrained by $\pi N$ and $\gamma N$ reaction data through a sophisticated coupled-channels analysis. We have found the possible region of parameters of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) within the bounds from the experimental results of the Higgs mass, the rare decay mode of $b$-quark, the muon $g-2$, the dark matter abundance, and the direct searches for the lighter stop (i.e., one of the supersymmetric partners of top quark) at the LHC. A superconducting qubit in the strong dispersive regime of a circuit quantum electrodynamics system is a powerful probe for microwave photons in a cavity mode. In this regime, a qubit spectrum is split into multiple peaks, with each peak corresponding to an individual photon number in the cavity (discrete ac Stark shift). Here, we measure the qubit spectrum in the cavity that is driven continuously with a squeezed vacuum field generated by a Josephson parametric amplifier. By fitting the qubit spectrum with a model which takes into account the finite qubit excitation power, the photon number distribution, which is dissimilar from the apparent peak area ratio in the spectrum, is determined. The photon number distribution shows the even-odd photon number oscillation and quantitatively fulfills Klyshko's criterion for the nonclassicality., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures, 1 table

We give numerical integration results for Feynman loop diagrams such as those covered by Laporta [1] and by Baikov and Chetyrkin [2], and which may give rise to loop integrals with UV singularities. We explore automatic adaptive integration using multivariate techniques from the PARINT package for multivariate integration, as well as iterated in- tegration with programs from the QUADPACK package, and a trapezoidal method based on a double exponential trans- formation. PARINT is layered over MPI (Message Passing Interface), and incorporates advanced parallel/distributed techniques including load balancing among processes that may be distributed over a cluster or a network/grid of nodes. Results are included for 2-loop vertex and box diagrams and for sets of 2-, 3- and 4-loop self-energy diagrams with or without UV terms. We develop an event mixing technique with a missing mass consistency (MMC) cut and a pion energy (PE) cut for the measurement of two-pion Bose-Einstein correlations (BEC) in reactions with only two identical pions produced in the final state. A multi mixing mode that allows one event to be mixed with multiple other events is proposed for the purpose of improving the statistics of mixed samples, and compared with the single mixing mode which requires one original event can be mixed only once. Numerical tests using the {\gamma}p -> {\pi}^0 {\pi}^0 p events are used to testify its ability to measure two-pion correlations. A large $\mu^-$ polarization was achieved in muonic Bi atoms with the help of the strong hyperfine field in a polarized nuclear target. Using $^{209}$Bi nuclei polarized to ($59\pm9$)% in ferromagnetic BiMn, we observed a $\mu$-$e$ decay asymmetry of ($13.1\pm3.9$)%, which gives $\mu^-$ polarization per nuclear polarization equal to $-1.07\pm 0.35$. This value is almost consistent with $-0.792$ calculated for nuclei with spin $I= \frac{9}{2}$ and a positive magnetic moment under the assumption that the hyperfine interaction becomes effective in the lowest muonic states., Comment: Corrected version of original paper, 4 pages, 2 figures, corrections indicated by red

The total cross sections were measured for coherent double neutral-pion photoproduction on the deuteron at incident energies below 0.9 GeV for the first time. No clear resonance-like behavior is observed in the excitation function for $W_{\gamma d}=2.38$--2.61 GeV, where the $d^*(2380)$ dibaryon resonance observed at COSY is expected to appear. The measured excitation function is consistent with the existing theoretical calculation for this reaction. The upper limit of the total cross section is found to be $0.034$~$\mu$b for the dibaryon resonance at $W_{\gamma d}=2.37$~GeV (90\% confidence level) in the $\gamma d \to \pi^0\pi^0 d$ reaction., Comment: submitted to Physics Letters B

We report on new results of a search for two-photon interaction with axionlike particles (ALPs). The experiment was carried out at a synchrotron radiation facility using a "light shining through a wall (LSW)" technique. For this purpose, we have developed a novel pulsed-magnet system, composed of multiple racetrack-magnets and a transportable power supply. It produces fields of about 10 T over 0.8 m with a high repetition rate of 0.2 Hz and yields a new method of probing vacuum with high intensity fields. The data obtained with a total of 27,676 pulses provide a limit on the ALP-two-photon coupling constant that is more stringent by a factor of 5.2 compared to a previous x-ray LSW limit for the ALP mass below 0.1 eV., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

We report a search for photon-photon elastic scattering in vacuum in the X-ray region at an energy in the center of mass system of \omega_{cms} =6.5 keV for which the QED cross section is \sigma_{QED} =2.5 \times 10^{-47} m^2. An X-ray beam provided by the SACLA X-ray Free Electron Laser is split and the two beamlets are made to collide at right angle, with a total integrated luminosity of (1.24 \pm 0.08) \times 10^{28} m^{-2}. No signal X rays from the elastic scattering that satisfy the correlation between energy and scattering angle were detected. We obtain a 95% C.L. upper limit for the scattering cross section of 1.9 \times 10^{-27} m^2 at \omega_{cms}=6.5 keV. We demonstrated a frequency offset locking between two laser sources using a waveguide-type electro-optic modulator (EOM) with 10th-order sidebands for magneto-optical trapping of Fr atoms. The frequency locking error signal was successfully obtained by performing delayed self-homodyne detection of the beat signal between the repumping frequency and the 10th-order sideband component of the trapping light. Sweeping the trapping-light and repumping-light frequencies with keeping its frequency difference of 46 GHz was confirmed over 1 GHz by monitoring the Doppler absorption profile of I2. This technique enables us to search for a resonance frequency of magneto-optical trapping of Fr., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

The strong light-field effect of (TMTTF)2AsF6 was investigated utilizing 1.5-cycle, 7-fs infrared pulses. The ultarfast (20 fs) and large (40%) response of the plasma-like reflectivity edge (0.7 eV) was analyzed by the changes in omega_p=sqrt(ne2/(epsilon_0*epsilon(infty)*m)} (n: number of charges in the 1/4 filled-band, m: mass of charge, epsilon(infty): dielectric constants for high-frequency and vacuum, e: elementary charge). The 3% reduction in omega_p is attributed to the 6% increase in m. Furthermore, 20 fs oscillation of omega_p in the time domain indicates that the plasma-like edge is affected by the charge gap (0.2 eV) nature. Theoretical calculations suggest that the Coulomb repulsion plays an important role in the increase in m., Comment: Phys. Rev. B accepted (26, March, 2016)

The $\phi$-$\Lambda(1520)$ interference effect in the $\gamma p\to K^+K^-p$ reaction has been measured for the first time in the energy range from 1.673 to 2.173 GeV. The relative phases between $\phi$ and $\Lambda(1520)$ production amplitudes were obtained in the kinematic region where the two resonances overlap. The measurement results support strong constructive interference when $K^+K^-$ pairs are observed at forward angles, but destructive interference for proton emission at forward angles. Furthermore, the observed interference effect does not account for the $\sqrt{s}=2.1$ GeV bump structure in forward differential cross sections for $\phi$ photoproduction. This fact suggests possible exotic structures such as a hidden-strangeness pentaquark state, a new Pomeron exchange and rescattering processes via other hyperon states.

We have developed an event mixing technique to observe Bose-Einstein correlations (BEC) between two identical neutral pions produced in photo-induced reactions in the non-perturbative QCD energy region. It is found that the missing-mass consistency cut and the pion-energy cut are essential for the event mixing method to effectively extract BEC observables. A Monte Carlo (MC) simulation is used to validate these constraints and confirms the efficiency of this method. Our work paves the way for similar BEC studies at lower energies where the multiplicity of emitted bosons is limited.

To search for an S= -1 di-baryonic state which decays to $\Lambda p$, the $ {\rm{}^3He}(K^-,\Lambda p)n_{missing}$ reaction was studied at 1.0 GeV/$c$. Unobserved neutrons were kinematically identified from the missing mass $M_X$ of the $ {\rm{}^3He}(K^-,\Lambda p)X$ reaction in order to have a large acceptance for the $\Lambda pn$ final state. The observed $\Lambda p n$ events, distributed widely over the kinematically allowed region of the Dalitz plot, establish that the major component comes from a three nucleon absorption process. A concentration of events at a specific neutron kinetic energy was observed in a region of low momentum transfer to the $\Lambda p$. To account for the observed peak structure, the simplest S-wave pole was assumed to exist in the reaction channel, having Breit-Wigner form in energy and with a Gaussian form-factor. A minimum $\chi^2$ method was applied to deduce its mass $M_X\ =$ 2355 $ ^{+ 6}_{ - 8}$ (stat.) $ \pm 12$ (syst.) MeV/c$^2$, and decay-width $\Gamma_X\ = $ 110 $ ^{+ 19}_{ - 17}$ (stat.) $ \pm 27$ (syst.) MeV/c$^2$, respectively. The form factor parameter $Q_X \sim$ 400 MeV/$c$ implies that the range of interaction is about 0.5, Comment: 12pages, 8 figures

The origin of successive phase transitions observed in the layered perovskite $\alpha$-Sr$_2$CrO$_4$ is studied by the density-functional-theory-based electronic structure calculation and mean-field analysis of the proposed low-energy effective model. We find that, despite the fact that the CrO$_6$ octahedron is elongated along the $c$-axis of the crystal structure, the crystal-field level of nondegenerate $3d_{xy}$ orbitals of the Cr ion is lower in energy than that of doubly degenerate $3d_{yz}$ and $3d_{xz}$ orbitals, giving rise to the orbital degrees of freedom in the system with a $3d^2$ electron configuration. It is well known that a moving intrinsic localized mode (ILM) in a nonlinear physical lattice looses energy because of the resonance between it and the underlying small amplitude plane wave spectrum. By exploring the Fourier transform (FT) properties of the nonlinear force of a running ILM in a driven and damped 1D nonlinear lattice, as described by a 2-D wavenumber and frequency map, we quantify the magnitude of the resonance where the small amplitude normal mode dispersion curve and the FT amplitude components of the ILM intersect. We show that for a traveling ILM characterized by a specific frequency and wavenumber, either inside or outside the plane wave spectrum, and for situations where both onsite and intersite nonlinearity occur, either of the hard or soft type, the strength of this resonance depends on the specific mix of the two nonlinearities. Examples are presented demonstrating that by engineering this mix the resonance can be greatly reduced. The end result is a supertransmission channel for either a driven or undriven ILM in a nonintegrable, nonlinear yet physical lattice., Comment: CHAOS 2015

A search for double-beta decays of 136Xe to excited states of 136Ba has been performed with the first phase data set of the KamLAND-Zen experiment. The 0+1, 2+1 and 2+2 transitions of 0{\nu}\{beta}\{beta} decay were evaluated in an exposure of 89.5kg-yr of 136Xe, while the same transitions of 2{\nu}\{beta}\{beta} decay were evaluated in an exposure of 61.8kg-yr. No excess over background was found for all decay modes. The lower half-life limits of the 2+1 state transitions of 0{\nu}\{beta}\{beta} and 2{\nu}\{beta}\{beta} decay were improved to T(0{\nu}, 0+ \rightarrow 2+) > 2.6\times10^25 yr and T(2{\nu}, 0+ \rightarrow 2+) > 4.6\times10^23 yr (90% C.L.), respectively. We report on the first experimental lower half-life limits for the transitions to the 0+1 state of 136Xe for 0{\nu}\{beta}\{beta} and 2{\nu}\{beta}\{beta} decay. They are T (0{\nu}, 0+ \rightarrow 0+) > 2.4\times10^25 yr and T(2{\nu}, 0+ \rightarrow 0+) > 8.3\times10^23 yr (90% C.L.). The transitions to the 2+2 states are also evaluated for the first time to be T(0{\nu}, 0+ \rightarrow 2+) > 2.6\times10^25 yr and T(2{\nu}, 0+ \rightarrow 2+) > 9.0\times10^23 yr (90% C.L.). In the late stages of nuclear burning for massive stars ($M>8~M_{\sun}$), the production of neutrino-antineutrino pairs through various processes becomes the dominant stellar cooling mechanism. As the star evolves, the energy of these neutrinos increases and in the days preceding the supernova a significant fraction of emitted electron anti-neutrinos exceeds the energy threshold for inverse beta decay on free hydrogen. This is the golden channel for liquid scintillator detectors because the coincidence signature allows for significant reductions in background signals. We find that the kiloton-scale liquid scintillator detector KamLAND can detect these pre-supernova neutrinos from a star with a mass of $25~M_{\sun}$ at a distance less than 690~pc with 3$\sigma$ significance before the supernova. This limit is dependent on the neutrino mass ordering and background levels. We have developed a polarized hard X-ray photoemission (HAXPES) system to study the ground-state symmetry of strongly correlated materials. The linear polarization of the incoming X-ray beam is switched by the transmission-type phase retarder composed of two diamond (100) crystals. The best degree of the linear polarization $P_L$ is $-0.96$, containing the vertical polarization component of 98%. A newly developed low temperature two-axis manipulator enables easy polar and azimuthal rotations to select the detection direction of photoelectrons. The lowest temperature achieved is 9 K, offering us a chance to access the ground state even for the strongly correlated electron systems in cubic symmetry. The co-axial sample monitoring system with the long-working-distance microscope enables us to keep measuring the same region on the sample surface before and after rotation procedures. Combining this sample monitoring system with a micro-focused X-ray beam by means of an ellipsoidal Kirkpatrick-Baez mirror (25 $\mu$m $\times$ 25 $\mu$m (FWHM)), we have demonstrated the polarized valence-band HAXPES on NiO for voltage application as resistive random access memories to reveal the origin of the metallic spectral weight near the Fermi level., Comment: to be published in Review of Scientific Instruments
