52. Observations of the Very Young Type Ia Supernova 2019np with Early-excess Emission

Early-time radiative signals from type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) can provide important constraints on the explosion mechanism and the progenitor system. We present observations and analysis of SN 2019np, a nearby SN Ia discovered within 1-2 days after the explosion. Follow-up observations were conducted in optical, ultraviolet, and near-infrared bands, covering the phases from $\sim-$16.7 days to $\sim$+367.8 days relative to its $B-$band peak luminosity. The photometric and spectral evolutions of SN 2019np resembles the average behavior of normal SNe Ia. The absolute B-band peak magnitude and the post-peak decline rate are $M_{\rm max}(B)=-19.52 \pm 0.47$mag and $\Delta m_{\rm15}(B) =1.04 \pm 0.04$mag, respectively. No Hydrogen line has been detected in the near-infrared and nebular-phase spectra of SN 2019np. Assuming that the $^{56}$Ni powering the light curve is centrally located, we find that the bolometric light curve of SN 2019np shows a flux excess up to 5.0% in the early phase compared to the radiative diffusion model. Such an extra radiation perhaps suggests the presence of an additional energy source beyond the radioactive decay of central nickel. Comparing the observed color evolution with that predicted by different models such as interactions of SN ejecta with circumstellar matter (CSM)/companion star, a double-detonation explosion from a sub-Chandrasekhar mass white dwarf (WD), and surface $^{56}$Ni mixing, the latter one is favored., Comment: 23 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

ObjectivesTo determine the association of prior use of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitors (RAASIs) with mortality and outcomes in hospitalized patients with COVID-19.DesignRetrospective observational study.SettingMulticenter, international COVID-19 registry.SubjectsAdult hospitalized COVID-19 patients on antihypertensive agents (AHAs) prior to admission, admitted from March 31, 2020, to March 10, 2021.InterventionsNone.Measurements and main resultsData were compared between three groups: patients on RAASIs only, other AHAs only, and those on both medications. Multivariable logistic and linear regressions were performed after controlling for prehospitalization characteristics to estimate the effect of RAASIs on mortality and other outcomes during hospitalization. Of 26,652 patients, 7,975 patients were on AHAs prior to hospitalization. Of these, 1,542 patients (19.3%) were on RAASIs only, 3,765 patients (47.2%) were on other AHAs only, and 2,668 (33.5%) patients were on both medications. Compared with those taking other AHAs only, patients on RAASIs only were younger (mean age 63.3 vs 66.9 yr; p < 0.0001), more often male (58.2% vs 52.4%; p = 0.0001) and more often White (55.1% vs 47.2%; p < 0.0001). After adjusting for age, gender, race, location, and comorbidities, patients on combination of RAASIs and other AHAs had higher in-hospital mortality than those on RAASIs only (odds ratio [OR] = 1.28; 95% CI [1.19-1.38]; p < 0.0001) and higher mortality than those on other AHAs only (OR = 1.09; 95% CI [1.03-1.15]; p = 0.0017). Patients on RAASIs only had lower mortality than those on other AHAs only (OR = 0.87; 95% CI [0.81-0.94]; p = 0.0003). Patients on ACEIs only had higher mortality compared with those on ARBs only (OR = 1.37; 95% CI [1.20-1.56]; p < 0.0001).ConclusionsAmong patients hospitalized for COVID-19 who were taking AHAs, prior use of a combination of RAASIs and other AHAs was associated with higher in-hospital mortality than the use of RAASIs alone. When compared with ARBs, ACEIs were associated with significantly higher mortality in hospitalized COVID-19 patients.

55. Role of Tensor Interaction as Salvation of Cluster Structure in $^{44}$Ti

Background: The $^{44}$Ti nucleus has been known to have a $^{40}$Ca+$\alpha$ cluster structure, and inversion doublet structure has been observed; however, $\alpha$ cluster structure tends to be washed out when the breaking of the $\alpha$ cluster is allowed due to the spin-orbit interaction. Nevertheless, $\alpha$ clustering in medium-heavy nuclei is quite a hot subject recently. Purpose: The tensor interaction has been known to play an essential role in the strong binding of the $^4$He nucleus, which induces the two-particle-two-hole (2p2h) excitation. Since this excitation is blocked when another nucleus approaches, it is worthwhile to show whether the tensor effect works to keep the distance between $^4$He and $^{40}$Ca and becomes the salvation of the clustering in $^{44}$Ti. Methods: The spin-orbit effect is included in the cluster model by using the antisymmetrized quasi cluster model (AQCM) developed by the authors. We have also developed an improved version of the simplified method to include the tensor contribution ($i$SMT), which allows us to estimate the tensor effect within the cluster model. The competition of these two is investigated in the medium-heavy mass region for the first time. Results: According to AQCM, the spin-orbit interaction completely breaks the $\alpha$ cluster and restores the symmetry of $jj$-coupling shell model when the $\alpha$ cluster approaches the $^{40}$Ca core. On the other hand, $i$SMT gives a large distance between $\alpha$ and $^{40}$Ca due to the tensor effect. Conclusions: In $^{44}$Ti, because of the strong spin-orbit and tensor contributions, two completely different configurations ($jj$-coupling shell model and cluster states) almost degenerate, and their mixing becomes important., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

The properties of nuclei with extreme neutron-to-proton ratios, far from those naturally occurring on Earth, are key to understand nuclear forces and how nucleons hold together to form nuclei. $^7$H, with six neutrons and a single proton, is the nuclear system with the most unbalanced neutron-to-proton ratio known so far. However, its sheer existence and properties are still a challenge for experimental efforts and theoretical models. Here we report experimental evidences on the formation of $^7$H as a resonance, detected with independent observables, and the first measurement of the structure of its ground state. The resonance is found at $\sim$0.7 MeV above the $^3$H+4n mass, with a narrow width of $\sim$0.2 MeV and a $1/2^+$ spin and parity. These data are consistent with a $^7$H as a $^3$H core surrounded by an extended four-neutron halo, with a unique four-neutron decay and a relatively long half-life thanks to neutron pairing; a prime example of new phenomena occurring in what would be the most pure-neutron nuclear matter we can access in the laboratory.

59. Optimization of basis functions for the multi-configuration mixing using the Replica Exchange Monte-Carlo method and its application to $^{12}$C

To calculate excited states in quantum many-body systems, multi-configuration mixing has often been employed. However, it has been still unclear how to choose important Slater determinants from a huge model space. We propose a novel efficient method as the Replica Exchange Monte-Carlo (RXMC) method to sample important Slater determinants and optimize and analyze the obtained results. As an application, we apply it to the ground and excited states of $^{12}$C based on the Bloch-Brink $\alpha$ cluster model and show the detailed structure of the obtained states. The RXMC method enables us to efficiently sample Slater determinants following the Boltzmann distribution on the multi-dimensional potential energy surface (PES) under a given model space. To analyze the obtained excited states, we embed sampled basis functions onto the PES calculated with the $\beta$-$\gamma$ constraint method and discuss the main component in the state. The RXMC method can efficiently perform the samplings with a temperature parameter of $T_L=2.5$ MeV in $^{12}$C. We obtain the gas-like state with a wide density distribution in the tail part in the second $0^+$ state. We also obtain the linear-chain-like states with the bending and stretching vibrational modes in the third and fourth $0^+$ states, respectively. In the fifth $0^+$ state, the main component of the basis functions contains expanded equilateral triangle configurations. The second $0^+$ gas-like state emerges at the local minimum in the PES, which is the beginning of the valley structure connected to the linear-chain breakup channel. The third and fourth linear-chain-like states emerge in this valley structure. We conclude that the RXMC method is a powerful method to calculate the excited states of nuclei, which would be applied to much complicated nuclear fission dynamics in heavier nuclei.

60. Antimicrobial activities of lavandulylated flavonoids in Sophora flavences against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus via membrane disruption

Introduction: The continuous emergence and rapid spread of multidrug-resistant bacteria have accelerated the demand for the discovery of alternative antibiotics. Natural plants contain a variety of antibacterial components, which is an important source for the discovery of antimicrobial agents. Objective: To explore the antimicrobial activities and related mechanisms of two lavandulylated flavonoids, sophoraflavanone G and kurarinone in Sophora flavescens against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Methods: The effects of sophoraflavanone G and kurarinone on methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus were comprehensively investigated by a combination of proteomics and metabolomics studies. Bacterial morphology was observed by scanning electron microscopy. Membrane fluidity, membrane potential, and membrane integrity were determined using the fluorescent probes Laurdan, DiSC3(5), and propidium iodide, respectively. Adenosine triphosphate and reactive oxygen species levels were determined using the adenosine triphosphate kit and reactive oxygen species kit, respectively. The affinity activity of sophoraflavanone G to the cell membrane was determined by isothermal titration calorimetry assays. Results: Sophoraflavanone G and kurarinone showed significant antibacterial activity and anti-multidrug resistance properties. Mechanistic studies mainly showed that they could target the bacterial membrane and cause the destruction of the membrane integrity and biosynthesis. They could inhibit cell wall synthesis, induce hydrolysis and prevent bacteria from synthesizing biofilms. In addition, they can interfere with the energy metabolism of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and disrupt the normal physiological activities of the bacteria. In vivo studies have shown that they can significantly improve wound infection and promote wound healing. Conclusion: Kurarinone and sophoraflavanone G showed promising antimicrobial properties against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, suggesting that they may be potential candidates for the development of new antibiotic agents against multidrug-resistant bacteria.

61. Hydrogen Permeation Properties of Ternary Ni–BaCe0.9Y0.1O3–Ce0.9Gd0.1O2 Cermet Membranes

A ternary Ni–BaCe0.9Y0.1O3 (BCY)–Ce0.9Gd0.1O2 (GDC) cermet involving 40 vol% Ni was fabricated, and its hydrogen permeation characteristics were evaluated when the GDC volume fraction was varied from 0 to 30 vol%. The X-ray diffraction results of the cermet after sintering at 1400 °C revealed that GDC was dissolved in BCY when the GDC volume composition was 20 vol%. Regardless of the BCY and GDC volume fractions, the metal conductivity of the cermet was dominated by Ni. After the addition of only 1 vol% GDC, the particle sizes of Ni and BCY in the cermet significantly decreased, and the particle size decreased as the volume fraction of GDC increased. The hydrogen permeability increased with increasing temperature and for up to 10 vol% GDC, and a maximum permeation rate of 0.142 mL min−1 cm−2 was obtained at 700 °C. This value is comparable to or better than previously reported values for Ni-cermets under the same conditions. The amount of hydrogen permeation decreased above 10 vol% GDC. This study demonstrated that Ni-BCY-GDC cermet is a material that has both high hydrogen permeability and CO2 resistance.

We present spectroscopy and photometry of SN 2018zd, a Type IIP core-collapse supernova with signatures of interaction with circumstantial material in its earliest spectra. High ionization lines, the earmark of shock breakout, are not seen in the earliest spectral epoch, and are only seen in a single spectrum at 4.9 d after explosion. The strength and brevity of these features imply a confined circumstellar material shell in the immediate vicinity of the progenitor. Once the narrow emission lines disappear, SN 2018zd evolves similarly to a Type IIP SN, although the blue colour and enhanced plateau magnitude of SN 2018zd suggests an additional source of luminosity throughout the plateau phase. While SN 2018zd has previously been proposed as an electron-capture SN, we suggest that it is an Fe core-collapse from a low mass red supergiant progenitor. Differences in interpretation for SN 2018zd arise in part due to the large uncertainty on the distance to the host-galaxy NGC 2146, which we re-derive here to be $15.6^{+6.1}_{-3.0}$ Mpc. We find the ejected $^{56}$Ni mass for SN 2018zd to be 0.017 M$_{\odot}$, significantly higher than models of ECSNe predict. We also find the Ni/Fe ratio in SN 2018zd to be much lower that would be expected for an ECSN.

68. Persistence of cluster structure in the ground state of $^{11}$B

The persistence of $\alpha+\alpha+t$ cluster configuration in the ground state of $^{11}$B is discussed. The $\alpha$ particles emitted from excited states of $^{12}$C could be utilized for cancer treatment, where the cluster states are created by a clinical proton beam on the $^{11}$B target. Although the cross section has been already available, for the nuclear structure side, whether the ground state of $^{11}$B contains the seeds of the cluster states is a crucial question, since the cluster structure may be washed out by the spin-orbit interaction, which has been known as a driving force to break the $\alpha$ clusters. For this purpose, in addition to the basis states with cluster configurations, we include their breaking effects by employing the antisymmetrized quasi cluster model (AQCM). The inclusion of the breaking effect of $\alpha+\alpha+t$ cluster structure is found to contribute to the lowering of the ground-state energy by about 2 MeV. Assuming the typical three-$\alpha$ cluster state of $^{12}$C as an equilateral triangular configuration with the relative distances of $\approx 4$ fm, the ground state of $^{11}$B is found to have a certain squared overlap with such state when a proton approaches. The third $3/2^{-}$ state has been suggested as a cluster state both theoretically and experimentally, and we confirmed the well-developed clustering.

69. Circumstellar Medium Constraints on the Environment of Two Nearby Type Ia Supernovae: SN 2017cbv and SN 2020nlb

We present deep Chandra X-ray observations of two nearby Type Ia supernovae, SN 2017cbv and SN 2020nlb, which reveal no X-ray emission down to a luminosity $L_X$$\lesssim$5.3$\times$10$^{37}$ and $\lesssim$5.4$\times$10$^{37}$ erg s$^{-1}$ (0.3--10 keV), respectively, at $\sim$16--18 days after the explosion. With these limits, we constrain the pre-explosion mass-loss rate of the progenitor system to be $\dot{M}$$<$7.2$\times$10$^{-9}$ and $<$9.7$\times$10$^{-9}$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ for each (at a wind velocity $v_w$=100 km s$^{-1}$ and a radius of $R$$\approx$10$^{16}$ cm), assuming any X-ray emission would originate from inverse Compton emission from optical photons up-scattered by the supernova shock. If the supernova environment was a constant density medium, we find a number density limit of n$_{CSM}$$<$36 and $<$65 cm$^{-3}$, respectively. These X-ray limits rule out all plausible symbiotic progenitor systems, as well as large swathes of parameter space associated with the single degenerate scenario, such as mass loss at the outer Lagrange point and accretion winds. We also present late-time optical spectroscopy of SN 2020nlb, and set strong limits on any swept up hydrogen ($L_{H\alpha}$$<$2.7$\times$10$^{37}$ ergs s$^{-1}$) and helium ($L_{He, \lambda 6678}$$<$2.7$\times$10$^{37}$ ergs s$^{-1}$) from a nondegenerate companion, corresponding to $M_{H}$$\lesssim$0.7--2$\times$10$^{-3}$ M$_{\odot}$ and $M_{He}$$\lesssim$4$\times$10$^{-3}$ M$_{\odot}$. Radio observations of SN 2020nlb at 14.6 days after explosion also yield a non-detection, ruling out most plausible symbiotic progenitor systems. While we have doubled the sample of normal type Ia supernovae with deep X-ray limits, more observations are needed to sample the full range of luminosities and sub-types of these explosions, and set statistical constraints on their circumbinary environments., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures, ApJ Accepted

We present the spectroscopic and photometric study of five intermediate-luminosity red transients (ILRTs), namely AT 2010dn, AT 2012jc, AT 2013la, AT 2013lb, and AT 2018aes. They share common observational properties and belong to a family of objects similar to the prototypical ILRT SN~2008S. These events have a rise time that is less than 15 days and absolute peak magnitudes of between $-11.5$ and $-14.5$ mag. Their pseudo-bolometric light curves peak in the range $0.5$ - $9.0 \times10^{40}~\mathrm{erg~s}^{-1}$ and their total radiated energies are on the order of (0.3 - 3) $\times$~10$^{47}$~erg. After maximum brightness, the light curves show a monotonic decline or a plateau, resembling those of faint supernovae IIL or IIP, respectively. At late phases, the light curves flatten, roughly following the slope of the $^{56}$Co decay. If the late-time power source is indeed radioactive decay, these transients produce $^{56}$Ni masses on the order of $10^{-4}$ to $10^{-3}$~\msun. The spectral energy distribution of our ILRT sample, extending from the optical to the mid-infrared (MIR) domain, reveals a clear IR excess soon after explosion and non-negligible MIR emission at very late phases. The spectra show prominent H lines in emission with a typical velocity of a few hundred km~s$^{-1}$, along with Ca~II features. In particular, the [Ca~II] $\lambda$7291,7324 doublet is visible at all times, which is a characteristic feature for this family of transients. The identified progenitor of SN~2008S, which is luminous in archival Spitzer MIR images, suggests an intermediate-mass precursor star embedded in a dusty cocoon. We investigated the development and breaking of the dineutron correlation in $^{10}$Be by analyzing the elastic and inelastic scatterings with a framework combing the microscopic structure and reaction models. For studying the structure, the $^{10}$Be nucleus was constructed under the assumption of a four-body ($\alpha + \alpha + n + n$) cluster model. In this work, we focused on the change in the inner structure for the 0$_1^+$, 2$_1^+$, and 2$_2^+$ states when the strength of the spin-orbit interaction is varied. The inner structure, including various physical quantities such as energy, radius, and transition strength, is drastically influenced by the strength of the spin-orbit interaction. In particular, the development and breaking of the dineutron correlation is governed by the spin-orbit strength. The differences in the inner structure can be manifested by applying the obtained wave functions to elastic and inelastic scatterings with a proton target at $E/A =$ 59.4 and 200 MeV. Although the 0$_1^+$ and 2$_1^+$ states are significantly influenced by the spin-orbit strength of the nuclear structure calculation, the elastic and inelastic cross sections are not much affected. On the other hand, the inelastic cross section of the 2$_2^+$ state depends greatly on the spin-orbit strength of the structure calculation. Many preceding works have shown in $^{11}$Li the presence of the halo structure comprised of the weakly bound two neutrons around $^9$Li, and it is intriguing to see how this halo structure changes when another $^9$Li approaches. In this study, we introduce a four-body model for $^{20}$C with two $^9$Li clusters and two valence neutrons. The recent development of the antisymmetrized quasi cluster model (AQCM) makes it possible to generate $jj$-coupling shell-model wave functions from $\alpha$ cluster models. Here, $jj$-coupling shell model wave function of $^9$Li is regarded as a cluster, which corresponds to the subclosure configuration of $p_{3/2}$ for the neutrons, and we discuss how the two neutrons connect two $^9$Li clusters. Until now, most of the clusters in the conventional models have been limited to the closures of the three-dimensional harmonic oscillators, such as $^4$He, $^{16}$O, and $^{40}$Ca; however, owing to AQCM, it is feasible to utilize the $jj$-coupling shell model wave functions as plural subsystems quite easily. We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of the nearby Type Ia SN 2019yvq, from its discovery $\sim$1 day after explosion to $\sim$100 days after its peak brightness. This SN exhibits several unusual features, most notably an extremely bright UV excess seen within $\sim$5 days of its explosion. As seen in Swift UV data, this early excess outshines its "peak" brightness, making this object more extreme than other SNe with early UV/blue excesses (e.g. iPTF14atg and SN 2017cbv). In addition, it was underluminous ($M_B=-18.4$), relatively quickly declining ($\Delta m_{15}(B)=1.35$), and shows red colors past its early blue bump. Unusual (although not unprecedented) spectral features include extremely broad-lined and high-velocity Si absorption. Despite obvious differences in peak spectra, we classify SN 2019yvq as a transitional member of the 02es-like subclass due to its similarities in several respects (e.g. color, peak luminosity, peak Ti, nebular [Ca II]). We model this dataset with a variety of published models, including SN ejecta - companion shock interaction and sub-Chandrasekhar mass WD double detonation models. Radio constraints from the VLA place an upper limit of $(4.5 - 20) \times 10^{-8}$ M$_{\odot}$/yr on the mass-loss rate from a symbiotic progenitor, which does not exclude a red giant or main sequence companion. Ultimately we find that no one model can accurately replicate all aspects of the dataset, and further we find that the ubiquity of early excesses in 02es-like SNe Ia requires a progenitor system that is capable of producing isotropic UV flux, ruling out some models for this class of objects.

Cystoid macular edema (CME) is a rare side effect associated with chemotherapy. Although the development of CME has been reported to occur following treatment with taxane drugs, such as nanoparticle albumin-bound paclitaxel (Nab-PTX), the occurrence of CME with treatment with atezolizumab has not yet been reported. Here, we report the case of a 49-year-old woman who developed CME 19 months into chemotherapy with Nab-PTX and atezolizumab. Improvement was not achieved with steroid injections into the Tenon’s sac, and Nab-PTX and atezolizumab treatments were ceased. One month later, there was subjective improvement in her symptoms. Although many reports have indicated that cessation of chemotherapy has successfully improved CME, a specific treatment for CME has not yet been established. Clinicians should be aware of the ophthalmologic side effects and offer immediate treatment if symptoms develop.

Abstract This study provides the health effects assessment of rice cultivated from plasma-irradiated seeds. The rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivated from seeds with plasma irradiation showed a growth improvement (slope-ratios of with plasma to without plasma were 1.066, 1.042, and 1.255 for tiller, and earing, and ripening periods, respectively) and an 4% increase in yield. The cultivated rice was used for repeated oral administrations to mice for 4-week period. Distilled water and rice cultivated from seeds without plasma irradiation were also used as control. The weights of the lung, kidney, liver, and spleen, with corresponding average values of 0.22 g, 0.72 g, 2.1 g, and 0.17 g for w/ plasma group and 0.22 g, 0.68 g, 2.16 g, and 0.14 g for w/o plasma group, respectively, showing no effect due to the administration of rice cultivated from plasma-irradiated seeds. Nutritional status, liver function, kidney function, and lipid, neutral fat profiles, and glucose metabolism have no significant difference between with and without plasma groups. These results show no obvious subacute effects were observed on rice grains cultivated and harvested from the mother plant that experienced growth improvement by plasma irradiation. This study provides a new finding that there is no apparent adverse health effect on the grains harvested from the plasma-irradiated seeds.

Cluster dynamics and single-particle correlation are simultaneously treated for the description of the ground state of ${}^{12} \mathrm{C} $. The recent development of the antisymmetrized quasi cluster model (AQCM) makes it possible to generate $jj$-coupling shell-model wave functions from $\alpha$ clusters models. The cluster dynamics and the competition with the $jj$-coupling shell-model structure can be estimated rather easily. In the present study, we further include the effect of single-particle excitation; the mixing of the two-particle-two-hole excited states is considered. The single-particle excitation is not always taken into account in the standard cluster model analyses, and the two-particle-two-hole states are found to strongly contribute to the lowering of the ground state owing to the pairing-like correlations. We present the follow-up campaign of the luminous red nova (LRN) AT~2019zhd, the third event of this class observed in M 31. The object was followed by several sky surveys for about five months before the outburst, during which it showed a slow luminosity rise. In this phase, the absolute magnitude ranged from M_r=-2.8+-0.2 mag to M_r=-5.6+-0.1 mag. Then, over a four-five day period, AT 2019zhd experienced a major brightening, reaching at peak M_r=-9.61+-0.08 mag, and an optical luminosity of 1.4x10^39 erg/s. After a fast decline, the light curve settled onto a short-duration plateau in the red bands. Although less pronounced, this feature is reminiscent of the second red maximum observed in other LRNe. This phase was followed by a rapid linear decline in all bands. At maximum, the spectra show a blue continuum with prominent Balmer emission lines. The post-maximum spectra show a much redder continuum, resembling that of an intermediate-type star. In this phase, Halpha becomes very weak, Hbeta is no longer detectable and a forest of narrow absorption metal lines now dominate the spectrum. The latest spectra, obtained during the post-plateau decline, show a very red continuum (T_eff ~ 3000 K) with broad molecular bands of TiO, similar to those of M-type stars. The long-lasting, slow photometric rise observed before the peak resembles that of LRN V1309 Sco, which was interpreted as the signature of the common-envelope ejection. The subsequent outburst is likely due to the gas outflow following a stellar merging event. The inspection of archival HST images taken 22 years before the LRN discovery reveals a faint red source (M_F555W=0.21+-0.14 mag, with F555W-F814W = 2.96+-0.12 mag) at the position of AT 2019zhd, which is the most likely quiescent precursor. In the transitional mass range ($\sim$ 8-10 solar masses) between white dwarf formation and iron core-collapse supernovae, stars are expected to produce an electron-capture supernova. Theoretically, these progenitors are thought to be super-asymptotic giant branch stars with a degenerate O+Ne+Mg core, and electron capture onto Ne and Mg nuclei should initiate core collapse. However, no supernovae have unequivocally been identified from an electron-capture origin, partly because of uncertainty in theoretical predictions. Here we present six indicators of electron-capture supernovae and show that supernova 2018zd is the only known supernova having strong evidence for or consistent with all six: progenitor identification, circumstellar material, chemical composition, explosion energy, light curve, and nucleosynthesis. For supernova 2018zd, we infer a super-asymptotic giant branch progenitor based on the faint candidate in the pre-explosion images and the chemically-enriched circumstellar material revealed by the early ultraviolet colours and flash spectroscopy. The light-curve morphology and nebular emission lines can be explained with the low explosion energy and neutron-rich nucleosynthesis produced in an electron-capture supernova. This identification provides insights into the complex stellar evolution, supernova physics, cosmic nucleosynthesis, and remnant populations in the transitional mass range., Comment: Author version of the published letter in Nature Astronomy, 28 June 2021

Result indicates substantial number of counts of false negatives, i.e. left detection and unclassified detections. Until now most of the clusters in the conventional models have been limited to the closures of the three-dimensional harmonic oscillators, such as $^4$He, $^{16}$O, and $^{40}$Ca. In the neutron-rich nuclei, however, the neutron to proton ratio is not unity, and it is worthwhile to think about more neutron-rich objects with $N>Z$ as the building blocks of cluster structures. Here the nuclei with the neutron number six, which is the subclosure of the $p_{3/2}$ subshell of the $jj$-coupling shell model, are assumed to be clusters, and thus we study the $^8$He and $^9$Li cluster structures in $^{16}$Be ($^8$He+$^8$He), $^{17}$B ($^8$He+$^9$Li), $^{18}$C ($^9$Li+$^9$Li), and $^{24}$C ($^8$He+$^8$He+$^8$He). Recent progress of the antisymmetrized quasi cluster model (AQCM) enables us to utilize $jj$-coupling shell model wave functions as the clusters rather easily. It is shown that the $^8$He+$^9$Li and $^9$Li+$^9$Li cluster configurations cover the lowest shell-model states of $^{17}$B and $^{18}$C, respectively. To predict the cluster states with large relative distances, we increase the expectation value of the principal quantum numbers by adding the nodes to the lowest states under the condition that the total angular momentum is unchanged (equal to $J^\pi =0$). As a result, developed cluster states are obtained around the corresponding threshold energies. The rotational band structure of $^{24}$C, which reflect the symmetry of equilateral triangular configuration ($D_{3h}$ symmetry) of three $^8$He clusters, also appears around the threshold energy.

Cermet films consisting of Ni, BaCe0.4Zr0.4Y0.2O3−δ (BCZY), and Gd0.1Ce0.9Ox (GDC), specifically, 60 wt%Ni–BCZY, 60 wt%Ni–BCZY–GDC, and 60 wt%Ni–GDC, were formed on BCZY electrolyte supports as anodes of proton ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs). The Ni grain size in these films after sintering at 1450 °C was around 2 μm. The GDC addition did not affect the Ni grain size in the case of the BCZY matrix. The anodic properties greatly depended on the oxide phase composition and worsened with increasing the GDC content. This probably occurred because of the addition of GDC, which has low proton conductivity and inhibited the proton conduction path of BCZY, reducing three-phase boundaries in the anode bulk. Since BCZY has a lower grain growth rate during sintering than BaCe0.8Y0.2O3−δ, the Ni grain growth was likely suppressed by the surrounding Ni grains containing small BCZY grains.

Abstract Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is an inherited autosomal dominant disorder that is associated with a high plasma level of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, leading to an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. To develop basic and translational research on FH, we here generated an FH model in a non-human primate (cynomolgus monkeys) by deleting the LDL receptor (LDLR) gene using the genome editing technique. Six LDLR knockout (KO) monkeys were produced, all of which were confirmed to have mutations in the LDLR gene by sequence analysis. The levels of plasma cholesterol and triglyceride were quite high in the monkeys, and were similar to those in FH patients with homozygous mutations in the LDLR gene. In addition, periocular xanthoma was observed only 1 year after birth. Lipoprotein profile analysis showed that the plasma very low-density lipoprotein and LDL were elevated, while the plasma high density lipoprotein was decreased in LDLR KO monkeys. The LDLR KO monkeys were also strongly resistant to medications for hypercholesterolemia. Taken together, we successfully generated a non-human primate model of hypercholesterolemia in which the phenotype is similar to that of homozygous FH patients.

Abstract Aims High mobility group box‐1 (HMGB1) is one of the damage‐associated molecular patterns produced by stress and induces inflammatory responses mediated by receptors of advanced glycation end‐products (RAGE) on the cell surface. Meanwhile, soluble RAGE (sRAGE) exhibits an anti‐inflammatory effect by capturing HMGB1. Animal models have shown upregulation of HMGB1 and RAGE in the brain or blood, suggesting the involvement of these proteins in depression pathophysiology. However, there have been no reports using blood from depressed patients, nor ones focusing on HMGB1 and sRAGE changes associated with treatment and their relationship to depressive symptoms. Methods Serum HMGB1 and sRAGE concentrations were measured by enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay in a group of patients with severe major depressive disorder (MDD) (11 males and 14 females) who required treatment with electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), and also in a group of 25 age‐ and gender‐matched healthy subjects. HMGB1 and sRAGE concentrations were also measured before and after a course of ECT. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAMD). Results There was no significant difference in HMGB1 and sRAGE concentrations in the MDD group compared to healthy subjects. Although ECT significantly improved depressive symptoms, there was no significant change in HMGB1 and sRAGE concentrations before and after treatment. There was also no significant correlation between HMGB1 and sRAGE concentrations and the HAMD total score or subitem scores. Conclusion There were no changes in HMGB1 and sRAGE in the peripheral blood of severely depressed patients, and concentrations had no relationship with symptoms or ECT.

Mollisioid fungi, represented by Mollisia (Fr.) P. Karst., are characterized by soft, sessile apothecia with globose, dark-celled excipula, hyaline ascospores, and worldwide distribution in temperate regions. Their generic and species delimitation is difficult due to the lack of distinct features, and studies based on DNA sequences are urgently required. Two genera of mollisioid fungi, Belonopsis and Trichobelonium, comprise relatively few species and are recognized by (0–)1–3-septate ascospores, medullary excipulum composed of loosely interwoven hyphae, and calcium oxalate crystals in the excipulum. Specimens of undescribed species that are morphologically assignable to Belonopsis or Trichobelonium were collected from various sites in Japan and their assignment to the proper genera was attempted. According to a molecular phylogenetic analysis involving members of Mollisiaceae based on concatenated sequences of ITS, LSU, and RPB1, eight taxonomic entities were placed in a strongly supported single clade with Mollisia diesbachiana, separated from the type species of Belonopsis, B. excelsior. A new genus Neobelonopsis was thus proposed to accommodate the undescribed species. In this study, eight new species of Neobelonopsis and two new species of Trichobelonium were described. A new combination was also proposed for M. diesbachiana. The generic distinction of Neobelonopsis and Trichobelonium was supported by molecular analysis. Some additional characteristics to delimit Trichobelonium were identified, such as the presence of anchoring hyphae between the base of the apothecium and subiculum, and the production of abundant crystals and soluble pigments on the colonies. Derivative species of Neobelonopsis were found to have multi-septa in ascospores.

Abstract We developed a new method to analyze protein–protein interactions using a dual-inducible prokaryotic expression system. To evaluate protein–protein binding, a chimeric fusion toxin gene was constructed using a DNase-treated short DNA fragment (epitope library) and CcdB, which encodes a DNA topoisomerase II toxin. Protein–protein interactions would affect toxin activity, resulting in colony formation. Using this novel system, we found a new binding site in the voltage-dependent calcium channel α1 subunit (CaV1.2) for the voltage-dependent calcium channel β2 subunit. Prokaryotic expression screening of the β2 subunit using an epitope library of CaV1.2 resulted in two overlapping clones of the C-terminal sequence of CaV1.2. In vitro overlay and immunoprecipitation analyses revealed preferential binding of the C-terminal sequences of CaV1.2 and β2.

100. Patients with Taste Disorders in a Hospital’s Dental Department and Strategies for Taste Disorders

Background/Objectives: A retrospective study was conducted to clarify the clinical characteristics of taste disorder cases at the Department of Oral Medicine of Hokkaido University Hospital. The subjects were 322 taste disorder patients (86 male, 236 female, average age: 66 (13.1) years, mean duration of disorder: 15.2 (20.0) months) who were treated at our department from 2007 to 2018. Methods: Associations between symptoms and classification were examined. Results: When looking at the taste symptoms, 154 cases of quantitative taste disorder were observed as taste loss, abscission, and dissociative taste disorder, and 168 cases of qualitative taste disorder were observed as spontaneous abnormal taste, dysgeusia, and maltaste. There was no relationship between sex and quantitative/qualitative taste disorders at V = 0.08. When looking at the causes of taste disorders, the majority were psychogenic, idiopathic, and oral diseases. Conclusions: Approximately 20% of taste disorders are caused by oral diseases, so it should be noted that oral diseases such as oral candidiasis and xerostomia can cause taste disorders and that many of them can be improved with oral treatment.
