Abstract

Results from the strangeness production experiment NA36 for 200 Gev/c 32 g and proton beams are presented. Strange particles are indentified by the topology of their decays in a Time Projection Chamber. Lambda mass, transverse momentum and rapidity distributions are shown as well as inclusive distributions for negative particles.

Abstract

π+-Nuclei coherent interactions with 2, 3, 4 and 5 pions in the final state have been looked for in a heavy-liquid bubble chamber experiment with direct detection of π0,s. Abundant coherent production has been found in the three-pion channels π+π+π− and π+π0π0, essentially in the A1 mass region, but the available statistics did not allow to put in evidence coherence in the 2, 4 and 5π channels, for which upper limits of cross-sections are given. The branching ratioR=Γ(A1→+ρ0)/Γ(A1→0ρ+) was found to beR=0.67±0.22.

Abstract

The following decays of η0 mesons produced in 350 000 photographs of a heavy liquid bubble chamber have been observed: η0 → π+π−π0, η0 → 3π0 → 6γ, η0 → γγ. All the γ-rays coming from these decays have been observed and measured; this provides a direct separation of the two neutral modes and independent measurements of the two following branching ratios: R1 = Γ (η0 → 3π0)/Γ(η0 → π+π−π0 and R2 = Γ(gh0 → γγ)/Γ(η0 → π+π−π0). This analysis has been done with 526 η0 → π+π−π0(π0 → γγ), 199 η0 → 3π0 → 6γ and 401 η0 → γγ events. The result R 1 = 1.50 −0.29 +0.15 is in agreement with the theoretical predictions assuming that η0 → 3π decays are pure ΔI = 1 transitions. The result R2 = 1.72 ± 0.25, combined with with R1 and compared with the present world average of the ratio Γ(η0 → neutrals)/gG(η0 → π+π−π0) is compatible with the absence of the mode η0 → π0γγ or with only a small decay rate for this last mode. Then η0 → 3π0 Dalitz plot has been studied, the three π0 being reconstructed from the measurements of the 6γ-rays, using kinematical fits. No significant variation of the η0 → 3π0 amplitude has been found. The coefficient of the term quadratic in pion energies in this amplitude is found to be α = −0.32 ± 0.37.

Abstract

The coherent production process K+-nucleus→K+π+π−-nucleus has been analysed at 10 GeV/c, in a heavy liquid bubble chamber. Evidence for a coherent process is obtained from the momentum transfer distribution; the cross section is 2.12 ± 0.36 mb per nucleus. The K+π+π−, mass distribution of the coherent events shows abundant production of the so-called Q+ state, with a cross section of 1.70 ± 0.30 mb per nucleus. A Dalitz plot analysis of the K+π+π− system indicates JP=1+ for the Q+ with a high probability. The predominant decay is K∗π with some contribution of Kϱ. The density matrix elements for Q+ -production have been studied.

Experience with the NA36 high-speed FASTBUS-based data acquisition system is presented. The multicrate system operates with a 35 m cable segment and extensive local data compression and processing. The principle data sources are a time projection chamber and associated calorimetry. A special FASTBUS interface was developed for drift- and proportional chamber readout. © 1989.

Abstract

From 199 η O → 3 π O → 6 γ , 526 η O → π + π − π O and 401 η O → γγ events with all γ-rays reconstructed in a heavy liquid bubble chamber, we obtain direct and independent measurements of the branching ratios: R 1 = Γ ( η O → 3 π O )/ Γ ( η O → π + π - π O ) = 1.50 -0.29 +0.15 and R 2 = Γ ( η O → γγ )/ Γ ( η O → π + π - π O ) = 1.72 ± 0.25. We also study the Dalitz-plots for the modes η O → 3π O and η O → π + π - π O , and find no significant variation of the amplitude of the decay η O → 3 π O .

Abstract

We present a study of the charge exchange reaction K+n → Kop using 10 GeV/c interactions on nuclei. The differential cross section is compared with that of the reaction K−p → Kon. The total cross section is estimated to be 76 ± 13 μ b per nucleon which agrees with the SU3 prediction.

Abstract

A sample of 766 antineutrino charged current elastic events has been used to extract the variation of the elastic cross section with antineutrino energy and the distribution of d N /d q 2 . The best fit value for the parameter M A obtained from these measurements is M A = 0.91 ± 0.04 GeV/ c 2 for M V = 0.84 GeV/ c 2 . A simultaneous determination of M A and M V gives M A = 0.94 ± 0.07, M V = 0.81

Cross sections are presented for antineutrino production of Λ, Σ0 and K0 in strangeness changing reactions. Associated production reactions (ΔS = 0) have been observed in the charged and the neutral current channels. For the elastic reaction vp → μ+Λ, estimates have been made of the axial transition form factor.

Abstract

The cross section ratio of the elastic neutral current reaction νp→νp to the quasi-elastic charged current reaction νn→μ−p has been measured in the kinematical region 0.3⩽q2⩽1.0 (GeV/c)2. The measured value is RM=0.17±0.08. Model dependent corrections are applied, especially for νn→νn contamination, and the result is compared to various models.

Abstract

Single pion production, in antineutrino-nucleon interactions via the neutral current, has been studied in the bubble chamber Gargamelle, filled with propane. Complete analysis of the secondaries, including π0,s, has allowed a detailed study of all channels. After background and nuclear corrections, results are obtained which can be interpreted in terms of isospin structure of the neutral weak current and of the Salam-Weinberg angle. Agreement is found with the currently accepted value of sin2θW and the data suggest an important contribution of I = 32 final states.

Abstract

We have studied coherent production of K ππ , Kπππ and Kππππ systems using 10 GeV/ c K + interactions of nuclei. In the K + π + π − channel we observe the Q + enhancement. The Q + -nucleon interaction cross-section is estimated to be 20 ± 8 mb.

Abstract

The use of CMOS Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors for high precision minimum ionizing particle tracking has been proven to be a viable and powerful novel experimental technique. In this approach a lightly doped thin and partially depleted silicon epitaxial layer is used as a radiation sensitive detector volume. The readout electronics circuitry is integrated directly on top of epitaxy using standard commercial CMOS process. For the pixel pitch of 20/spl mu/m particle tracking precision of below 2/spl mu/m and full efficiency have been measured in the past. In this work measurements with CMOS MAPS fabricated on non-epitaxial, high resistivity substrate are presented. Efficient and performing MIP tracking is demonstrated, also for a large 40/spl mu/m pixel readout pitch. These results proves that the use of epitaxial substrate for MAPS fabrication is not mandatory, opening much larger choice of possible CMOS processes in the future.

Abstract

Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) diamond is a radiation-hard sensor material that may be used for charged particle tracking near the interaction region in experiments at high-luminosity colliders. The goal of the work described in this paper is to investigate the use of several detector planes made of CVD diamond strip sensors for charged particle tracking. Toward this end, a tracking telescope composed entirely of CVD diamond planes has been constructed. The telescope was tested in muon beams, and its tracking capability has been investigated.

Abstract

The adequacy of Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors for charged particle tracking has been assessed, based on prototypes fabricated in 0.6, 0.35 and 0.25 /spl mu/m CMOS processes. First radiation hardness studies of these prototypes are presented. Measurements were performed using a 30 MeV/c proton beam, a fast neutron beam from a nuclear reactor and a 10 keV X-ray generator as irradiation sources. The losses in the collected charge were measured after 5/spl times/10/sup 11/ protons/cm/sup 2/ as well as after a total fluence of 10/sup 12/ neutrons/cm/sup 2/. Moderate doses (hundreds of kRads) of X-ray photons induces an important increase of a leakage current, showing also limited effect on the collected charge. Test results are reviewed and new charge collecting radiation tolerant structures are proposed.

Abstract

We present recent results on the use of Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) diamond microstrip detectors for charged particle tracking. A series of detectors was fabricated using 1 x 1 cm 2 diamonds. Good signal-to-noise ratios were observed using both slow and fast readout electronics. For slow readout electronics, 2 μs shaping time, the most probable signal-to-noise ratio was 50 to 1. For fast readout electronics, 25 ns peaking time, the most probable signal-to-noise ratio was 7 to 1. Using the first 2 x 4 cm 2 diamond from a production CVD reactor with slow readout electronics, the most probable signal-to-noise ratio was 23 to 1. The spatial resolution achieved for the detectors was consistent with the digital resolution expected from the detector pitch.

Abstract

CVD diamond shows promising properties for use as a position sensitive detector for experiments in the highest radiation areas at the Large Hadron Collider. In order to study the radiation hardn ess of diamond we exposed CVD diamond detector samples to 24~GeV/$c$ and 500~MeV protons up to a fluence of $5\times 10^{15}~p/{\rm cm^2}$. We measured the charge collection distance, the ave rage distance electron hole pairs move apart in an external electric field, and leakage currents before, during, and after irradiation. The charge collection distance remains unchanged up to $1\ times 10^{15}~p/{\rm cm^2}$ and decreases by $\approx$40~\% at $5\times 10^{15}~p/{\rm cm^2}$. Leakage currents of diamond samples were below 1~pA before and after irradiation. The particle indu ced currents during irradiation correlate well with the proton flux. In contrast to diamond, a silicon diode, which was irradiated for comparison, shows the known large increase in leakage curren t. We conclude that CVD diamond detectors are radiation hard to 24~GeV/$c$ and 500~MeV protons up to at least $1\times 10^{15}~p/{\rm cm^2}$ without signal loss.

Abstract

Real time dosimetry is a critical issue in most radiotherapy applications. SUCIMA (Silicon Ultra fast Cameras for electron and gamma sources In Medical Applications) is a project addressing the development of an imaging technique of extended radioactive sources based on monolithic and hybrid position sensitive silicon sensors, where "imaging" has to be understood as the record of a dose map. The requirements for the detectors are given by the main applications, namely brachytherapy and real time monitoring of a proton beam for oncology. The key issues in the sensor and DAQ development are described together with the most relevant medical applications. SUCIMA is a project supported by the European Commission.

Abstract

A systematic search for the decay mode η 0 → π + π − π 0 γ has been made with direct detection of the two charged pions and of the three γ -rays in the Ecole Polytechnique heavy liquid bubble chamber. The branching ratio R = Γ ( η 0 → π + π − π 0 γ )/ Γ ( η 0 → π + π − π 0 ) is found to have an upper limit of 1.7% with 90% confidence level.
