Abstract

Waste cooking oil (WCO) is being investigated as a rejuvenator to utilise higher amount of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) in asphalt mixtures. Past studies have evaluated the potential of WCO as rejuvenator without considering the performance of the rejuvenated binder after the secondary aging (long-term aging). The studies did not reveal any optimum amount of WCO required for the appropriate rejuvenation for incorporation of particular amount of RAP binder or aged binder. In this study, the potential of WCO is evaluated as rejuvenator of the binders incorporating higher aged binder by considering the anti-aging effect of WCO on the performance of rejuvenated binder after secondary aging. The study proposes a concept to determine the optimum dose of WCO for binders with different percentage of aged binder based on Equi-viscous concept and rutting criteria for short-term aged binder.Optimum dosages for the rejuvenated binders with 45, 60 and 75% RAP binder were found to be 6.45, 7.07 and 7.59%, respectively. The rejuvenated binders with different RAP contents and optimum WCO dosage showed lower susceptibility against fatigue and rutting. 60. Data-Assisted Non-Intrusive Model Reduction for Forced Nonlinear Finite Elements Models

Abstract

Spectral submanifolds (SSMs) have emerged as accurate and predictive model reduction tools for dynamical systems defined either by equations or data sets. While finite-elements (FE) models belong to the equation-based class of problems, their implementations in commercial solvers do not generally provide information on the nonlinearities required for the analytical construction of SSMs. Here, we overcome this limitation by developing a data-driven construction of SSM-reduced models from a small number of unforced FE simulations. We then use these models to predict the forced response of the FE model without performing any costly forced simulation. This approach yields accurate forced response predictions even in the presence of internal resonances or quasi-periodic forcing, as we illustrate on several FE models. Our examples range from simple structures, such as beams and shells, to more complex geometries, such as a micro-resonator model containing more than a million degrees of freedom. In the latter case, our algorithm predicts accurate forced response curves in a small fraction of the time it takes to verify just a few points on those curves by simulating the full forced-response.

84. Effect of lime and cement fillers on moisture susceptibility of cold mix asphalt

Abstract

Cold mix asphalt (CMA) has many economic and environmental benefits but its higher moisture susceptibility reduce its use to minor construction and repairing work. To increase the field implementation of CMA, it is very necessary to reduce its moisture susceptibility. So present study examines the effect of lime and cement filler on the moisture susceptibility of CMA. In the study, lime and cement fillers were used in varying proportions i.e. 1% to 5%. Based on volumetric properties and minimum emulsion content criteria, 2% was found to be optimum content for both lime and cement fillers. From Marshall stability, retained Marshall stability, Indirect tensile strength, and Tensile strength ratio values it was found that both fillers considerably improve moisture susceptibility of cold mixes. Energy consumption and cost comparison further concluded that as compared to HMA, incorporation of cement and lime fillers in cold mixes results in economic and environment-friendly mixes.

Abstract

Only 4% of brief resolved unexplained events (BRUE) are caused by a serious underlying illness. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) guidelines do not distinguish patients who would benefit from further investigation and hospitalization. We aimed to derive and validate a clinical decision rule for predicting the risk of a serious underlying diagnosis or event recurrence.We retrospectively identified infants presenting with a BRUE to 15 children’s hospitals (2015–2020). We used logistic regression in a split-sample to derive and validate a risk prediction model.Of 3283 eligible patients, 565 (17.2%) had a serious underlying diagnosis (n = 150) or a recurrent event (n = 469). The AAP’s higher-risk criteria were met in 91.5% (n = 3005) and predicted a serious diagnosis with 95.3% sensitivity, 8.6% specificity, and an area under the curve of 0.52 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.47–0.57). A derived model based on age, previous events, and abnormal medical history demonstrated an area under the curve of 0.64 (95%CI: 0.59–0.70). In contrast to the AAP criteria, patients >60 days were more likely to have a serious underlying diagnosis (odds ratio:1.43, 95%CI: 1.03–1.98, P = .03).Most infants presenting with a BRUE do not have a serious underlying pathology requiring prompt diagnosis. We derived 2 models to predict the risk of a serious diagnosis and event recurrence. Abstract

Abstract Background Semantic similarity measures are useful to assess the physiological relevance of protein-protein interactions (PPIs). They quantify similarity between proteins based on their function using annotation systems like the Gene Ontology (GO). Proteins that interact in the cell are likely to be in similar locations or involved in similar biological processes compared to proteins that do not interact. Thus the more semantically similar the gene function annotations are among the interacting proteins, more likely the interaction is physiologically relevant. However, most semantic similarity measures used for PPI confidence assessment do not consider the unequal depth of term hierarchies in different classes of cellular location, molecular function, and biological process ontologies of GO and thus may over-or under-estimate similarity. Results We describe an improved algorithm, Topological Clustering Semantic Similarity (TCSS), to compute semantic similarity between GO terms annotated to proteins in interaction datasets. Our algorithm, considers unequal depth of biological knowledge representation in different branches of the GO graph. The central idea is to divide the GO graph into sub-graphs and score PPIs higher if participating proteins belong to the same sub-graph as compared to if they belong to different sub-graphs. Conclusions The TCSS algorithm performs better than other semantic similarity measurement techniques that we evaluated in terms of their performance on distinguishing true from false protein interactions, and correlation with gene expression and protein families. We show an average improvement of 4.6 times the F1 score over Resnik, the next best method, on our Saccharomyces cerevisiae PPI dataset and 2 times on our Homo sapiens PPI dataset using cellular component, biological process and molecular function GO annotations.

Abstract

Seizures can have varied presentations and may have different etiological factors. A multidisciplinary approach should be used to treat them. It becomes difficult to diagnose seizures if they have an atypical presentation, particularly so when they manifest as behavioral disturbances. This case series demonstrates four cases with different psychiatric and behavioral manifestations of seizures where the diagnosis had to be done in a multi-disciplinary approach.
