Abstract

A collaborative effort is proposed to continue the development, which started in the framework of the CERN-LAA project, of a true 2-dimensional semiconductor particle detector with micrometric precision and with on-chip signal processing, a so called micropattern or pixel detector, for use in high luminosity colliders like the LHC. Different institutes will pursue in a complementary way both the hybrid approach and the monolithic approach. If the Silicon-On- Insulator (SOI) technology can be shown to be effective, both approaches could merge into a single effort. The first experimental devices can be tailored to serve intermediate physics experiments with fixed target or at the LEP collider, thus verifying the feasibility of the pixel detector technology.

We describe a program of studies aimed at determining whether the track stub/preshower technique of electron identification can be used at the highest operating luminosities of the proposed LHC collider. The proposal covers detector and electronics developments required for the construction of a track-stub and preshower detector preceding the electromagnetic calorimeter of an LHC experiment.

Abstract

It is proposed to develop a demonstrator integrated circuit for particle detector analog signal processing using the advanced 1.2 micron HSOI3-HD Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) CMOS radiation hard technology of Thomson-TMS, which has recently become accessible for selected civilian applications. The characteristics announced for this process promise survivability after a total dose in excess of 10 Mrad (SiO2) and 10**14 to 10**15 n/cm2, which is probably satisfactory for applications in LHC detector systems. The properties of such a SOI process look promising, in particular regarding speed. In view of the special analog requirements in the particle physics environment,one should verify the analog characteristics before and after irradiation by producing a demonstrator signal processing circuit which incorporates the most vital functional blocks. This demonstrator would consist of a low noise front-end amplifier, a comparator and an analog pipeline element with associated logic, following the scheme of the Hierarchical Analog Readout Pipelined Processor HARP, which has been developed in the framework of the CERN-LAA detector R&D project.

Abstract

This paper describes the modeling of a standard 0.25 μm CMOS technology at cryogenic temperatures. In the first step of the work, the parameters of the EKV v2.6 model were extracted at different temperatures (300, 150, and 70 K). The extracted parameters were then used to optimize the performance of a room temperature designed active feedback front-end preamplifier (AFP) at 130 K. The results show that with a small adjustment of the extracted parameters it is possible to have a reasonable model at low temperatures. By optimizing the bias conditions at 130 K, a fall time down to 1.5 ns and a double pulse resolution of 6.5 ns were measured for NA60 proton beamscope. The proposed approach will also allow a low temperature design optimization for future projects, which will not be possible using only standard models provided by the foundry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

74. Transport of high energy muons in a soil shield

Abstract

An experiment is described in which measurements were made of the fluence of muons as a function of radial distance at a depth of about 350 m in a soil shield irradiated by a beam of muons at 200, 240 and 280 GeV/c. Three measurement techniques were employed: a scintillator telescope, a semiconductor detector telescope, and nuclear emulsions. The data recorded by the different techniques show agreement among themselves. They are compared with transport calculations based on the Fermi-Eyges model and on Monte Carlo calculations. The differences between the observed data and the calculations are discussed, but there is general agreement between data and calculations to better than a factor of two over a range of four orders of magnitude in fluence per incident muon.

Abstract

The present invention relates to a microchannel plate (1) having an array of channels (5), wherein said microchannel plate comprises a substrate (2) and, deposited on said substrate, a hydrogenated amorphous silicon film (3) having a thickness comprised between 50 [mu]m and 200 [mu]m, preferably comprised between 80 [mu]m and 120 [mu]m, said film comprising said array of channels (5). Preferably, the substrate (2) is an integrated circuit comprising an internal electronic readout circuit and pixilated collection electrodes (8), and the film (3) is integrated on said substrate (2). The channels (5) may be formed by a Deep Reactive Ion Etching (DRIE) process.
