Eight compounds were isolated from the 50% ethanol extract of Impatiens pritzllii var.hupehensis through various column chromatography methods including silica gel, Sephadex LH-20, and preparative HPLC. Their structures were elucidated as 2,6-dimethyl-2-vinyl-2,3,4,7-tetrahydrooxepine(1), 1,3,6-trihydroxy-7-methyl-anthraquinone(2),4-hydroxybenzaldehyde(3),4-(3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenyl)-2-butanone(4), podophyllotoxin(5),scopoletin(6), α-spinasterol(7) and 3-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-α-spinasterol(8) based on the NMR and MS spectral data. Compound 1 is new compound and compounds 2-8 are isolated from this plant for the first time.

In 2006-2007, a field trial was conducted to study the effects of applying three kinds of organic-inorganic compound fertilizers [rapeseed cake compost plus inorganic fertilizers (RCC), pig manure compost plus inorganic fertilizers (PMC), and Chinese medicine residues plus inorganic fertilizers (CMC)] on the crop growth and nitrogen (N) use efficiency of rice-wheat rotation system in South Jiangsu. Grain yield of wheat and rice in the different fertilization treatments was significantly higher than the control (no fertilization). In treatments RCC, PMC and CMC, the wheat yield was 13.1%, 32.2% and 39.3% lower than that of the NPK compound fertilizer (CF, 6760 kg x hm(-2)), respectively, but the rice yield (8504-9449 kg x hm(-2)) was significantly higher than that (7919 kg x hm(-2)) of CF, with an increment of 7.4%-19.3%. In wheat season, the aboveground dry mass, N accumulation, and N use efficiency in treatments RCC, PMC, and CMC were lower than those of CF, but in rice season, these parameters were significantly higher than or as the same as CF. In sum, all the test three compound fertilizers had positive effects on the rice yield and its nitrogen use efficiency in the rice-wheat rotation system, being most significant for RCC.

From Valeriana officinalis L., 4 compounds were isolated and identified by various spectral analysis and chemical conversion, as valerenic acid, beta-sitosterol, ursolic acid, 4, 4', 8, 8'-tetrahydroxy-3, 3'-dimethoxyl-dibenzyl-ditetrahydrofuran and caryophyllene acide,valerane, naphthalene, linoleic acid, ethyl ester, myrtenyl acetate were identified by GC-MS. Ursolic acid and 4, 4', 8, 8'-tetrahydroxy-3, 3'-dimethoxyl-dibenzyl-ditetrahydrofuran were discovered in this plant for the first time.

To isolate and identify the differentially expressed genes in spermatogenesis for the understanding molecular mechanism of spermatogenesis.Screening of the cDNA library, Northern blot, expression and purification in E. coli with GST expression system, immunocytochemical staining of testis sections were used.(1) A cDNA fragment designated as RSD-7 was isolated from rat testis cDNA library. It was 1,238 bp in length, coding a protein of 232 amino acids with the GenBank accession number AF315467. The encoding protein of RSD-7 cDNA had a Ubiquitin-like domain. (2) Northern blot indicated that RSD-7 was uniquely expressed in rat testis, and in the testis RSD-7 emerged on the 30th postnatal day and expressed until 120th postnatal day. (3) Expression and purification of RSD-7 protein in E. coli with GST expression system and were used to obtain anti-RSD-7 antibody. (4) Immunolocalization of RSD-7 in rat testis revealed that it is expressed only in Sertoli cells.Transcription pattern of RSD-7 and localization of RSD-7 protein in testis have been made, which established the base for the functional study of RSD-7.

The present study was designed to investigate the relationship between fetal sheep pituitary oestrogen receptor (ER) alpha expression and changes in fetal and maternal plasma 17beta-oestradiol (E2) concentrations during gestation. The results revealed that immunoreactivity for ER was located in the nuclei and distributed throughout the fetal pituitary gland during gestation. The percentage of ERalpha-positive cells was approximately 2% of the total cell population in female fetuses at Day 60 of gestation, increased to approximately 7% and 13% of the total cell population at Days 90 and 120 of gestation, respectively, and then declined to approximately 10% at birth. The fetal plasma E2 concentrations were approximately 19 and 71 pg mL(-1) at Days 90 and 120 of gestation, respectively, and decreased to 22 pg mL(-1) after birth. In male fetuses, plasma E2 concentrations and the percentage of ERalpha-positive cells were similar to values in female fetuses throughout gestation, except on Day 120 when the plasma E2 level in female fetuses was significantly higher than in male fetuses. These data demonstrate that changes in the percentage of fetal pituitary ERalpha-positive cells parallel fetal plasma E2 concentrations throughout gestation.
