Given the overexploitation of fisheries and the growing consumption of sea products, aquaculture is emerging as an alternative to meet the demand for protein at regional, national, and global levels. In northern Chile, the foothills of the Andes offer an opportunity for sustainable economic diversification. In this study, results of a rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) culture in a recirculation system are presented, analyzing its growth and performance under altitude conditions. The research was carried out in Copaquilla, a small area in the foothills of northern Chile, 3000 m above sea level. Five thousand 15 g juvenile trout were acquired and transported by land from the Rio Blanco fish farm, successfully traveling more than 2100 km. During the 20-month-long culture, several growth parameters were evaluated, including specific growth rate, percentage of weight growth, feed conversion factor, survival, and Fulton’s condition factor. All these parameters were within the normal growth range for trout, evidencing good-quality growth of the organisms. The results offer evidence that rainbow trout farming at 3000 m above sea level is viable and presents a viable performance, opening new opportunities for aquaculture in northern Chile.

Attosecond science is well developed for atoms and promising results have been obtained for molecules and solids. Here, we review the first steps in developing attosecond time-resolved measurements in liquids. These advances provide access to time-domain studies of electronic dynamics in the natural environment of chemical reactions and biological processes. We concentrate on two techniques that are representative of the two main branches of attosecond science: pump-probe measurements using attosecond pulses and high-harmonic spectroscopy (HHS). In the first part, we discuss attosecond photoelectron spectroscopy with cylindrical microjets and its application to measure time delays between liquid and gaseous water. We present the experimental techniques, the new data-analysis methods and the experimental results. We describe in detail the conceptual and theoretical framework required to fully describe attosecond chronoscopy in liquids at a quantum-mechanical level. This includes photoionization delays, scattering delays, as well as a coherent description of electron transport and (laser-assisted) photoemission and scattering. As a consequence, we show that attosecond chronoscopy of liquids is, in general, sensitive to both types of delays, as well as the electron mean-free paths. Through detailed modeling, involving state-of-the-art quantum scattering and Monte-Carlo trajectory methods, we show that the photoionization delays dominate in attosecond chronoscopy of liquid water at photon energies of 20-30 eV. This conclusion is supported by a near-quantitative agreement between experiment and theory. In the second part, we introduce HHS of liquids based on flat microjets. These results represent the first observation of high-harmonic generation (HHG) in liquids extending well beyond the visible into the extreme-ultraviolet regime., Comment: Chapter submitted as a contribution to the Book "Ultrafast electronic and structural dynamics" edited by Prof. Kiyoshi Ueda

Key Clinical Message In patients with infectious symptoms and severe muscle pain, it is crucial to consider pyomyositis as a significant potential cause. A normal complete blood count should not exclude this possibility early in the course. Early advanced imaging modalities and blood cultures are crucial in narrowing the differential. Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus is increasingly implicated.

Although the liability of foreignness has been shown to present real economic barriers for foreign firms in various contexts around the globe, scholars continue to debate what drives this liability in different market contexts: lack of information due to institutional distance, lack of social embeddedness, discrimination, or something else. In this study, we propose a new theory, that in corporate lobbying within the nonmarket strategy context, the liability of foreignness is driven in no small part by a values-based ideological conflict stemming from the divide between democracy and autocracy. Private-sector firms from autocratic countries face costs of illegitimacy in Washington, D.C., and professional corporate lobbyists charge such firms a fee premium, in effect, to pay for legitimacy. We conduct an empirical study of the lobbying fees charged by professional corporate lobbyists in Washington, D.C., to their domestic and foreign firm clients, and the results strongly support the predictions of our theory. We also show that the liability of foreignness in this context endures for foreign firms from autocratic countries over the 15-year length of our sample period. Offering a new theoretical perspective as well as new empirical findings regarding the liability of foreignness, our study has practical implications for managers of foreign firms and may also generalize to other market contexts. 523.1 ,redshift galaxies ,Wide-Field Infra-Red Survey Explorer (WISE) - Abstract
This thesis presents observations of dusty, luminous, high redshift galaxies using mid Infra-Red and radio observations of samples of galaxies uncovered using the Wide-Field Infra-Red Survey Explorer (WISE) All-Sky Mission. Observations of these galaxies are critical to understanding the evolution of galaxies during the epoch of the peak in mergers and star formation activity. Two samples of galaxies are investigated in Chapter 3 and Chapter 4. The galaxies in Chapter 3 were selected using the WISE-All Sky mission, with additional constraints at 1.4 GHz (21 cm) to select for radio-intermediate emission. These galaxies are expected to have radio jets still embedded in their galactic hosts, and the sample within this thesis resides between redshifts of 1.3 < z < 2.9. To understand the nature of the environments that these powerful, luminous galaxies inhabit, the possibility of mergers between nearby galaxies is estimated using mid Infra-Red Spitzer observations over square 5.12' x 5.12' fields. The galaxies in Chapter 4 were also discovered using the WISE-All Sky mission, but with no constraints on their radio power. These galaxies are among the most luminous known, with Infra-Red luminosities in excess of 10¹⁴ L⊙, placing them in the HyLIRG regime. These luminous, dusty galaxies are expected to contain extremely powerful AGN in their centres, heating the surrounding dust to temperatures ≳ 60 K. Using ~ 30 GHz observations of a sample of these galaxies, estimates of their radio properties can be determined to understand the level of free-free and synchrotron emission, and the rates of star formation in the galaxy hosts.

- Abstract
Human genetic studies of critical COVID-19 pneumonia have revealed the essential role of type I interferon-dependent innate immunity to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Conversely, an association between the HLA-B∗15:01 allele and asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection in unvaccinated individuals was recently reported, suggesting a contribution of pre-existing T cell-dependent adaptive immunity. We report a lack of association of classical HLA alleles, including HLA-B∗15:01, with pre-omicron asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection in unvaccinated participants in a prospective population-based study in the United States (191 asymptomatic vs. 945 symptomatic COVID-19 cases). Moreover, we found no such association in the international COVID Human Genetic Effort cohort (206 asymptomatic vs. 574 mild or moderate COVID-19 cases and 1,625 severe or critical COVID-19 cases). Finally, in the Human Challenge Characterisation study, the three HLA-B∗15:01 individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2 developed symptoms. As with other acute primary infections studied, no classical HLA alleles favoring an asymptomatic course of SARS-CoV-2 infection were identified.

- Abstract
The Peruvian grunt, Anisotremus scapularis, is beginning its domestication as a candidate species for marine aquaculture. The optimal management of fingerling production requires precise knowledge on early development. Herein, we report the methodology for capturing and conditioning wild specimens to find a viable broodstock. The speed of capture and transportation (about 30 min), the post capture preventive treatment (60 min with tetracycline), and the 6-days preventive antiparasitic treatment (29 ppm formalin) maximized survival and a rapid feeding adaptation. Progressive diets based on the copepod Emerita analoga, fish meal, pellets and processed feedstuff prompted the spontaneous broodstock spawning 7 months post-capture. The interannual spawning of this broodstock since September 2016 indicated the optimal control of its reproduction in captivity. The morphogenetic process of the embryo lasted 42 h at 18 °C compared to (31–41) h at 19 °C in northern Peruvian latitudes. The knowledge generated allowed us to work out broodstock and egg management protocols in southern Pacific latitudes (southern Peru and northern Chile). Such protocols would help to escalate larval and juvenile production and to alleviate fishing pressure on the overexploited Peruvian grunt population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Research Summary: We examine the relationship between political competition, corporate bribery, and corporate contributions to politically connected charities, and whether there is a shift from covert to concealed corporate nonmarket action as political competition increases. Panel analysis using rare corporate bribery and charity donations panel data from South Korea reveals that as political competition increases, corporate bribery decreases, whereas corporate contributions to politically connected charities increase. Subsequent panel analysis uncovers that amid increased political competition, firms that made larger bribes in the prior year contribute more to politically connected charities in the subsequent year, and that this form of rechanneling is more pronounced for smaller business groups. Implications are discussed. Managerial Summary: This study argues that the field of strategy needs to do more to analyze firms' illegal strategic behavior, both to gain a deeper understanding of business practices in the corporate world and to develop recommendations for policymakers on how to curb such behavior over time. Using comprehensive and rare firm‐level data on bribery of high‐level government officials and donations to politically connected charities from South Korea, this study analyzes how businesses rechannel their bribery of senior‐level politicians to contributions to politically connected charities as the country's level of political competition becomes stronger. This study proposes a theory of rechanneling and demonstrates support for the theory using the extensive data set on bribery and politically connected charity donations from South Korea. FISH farming ,CONSUMPTION (Economics) ,MARICULTURE ,AGRICULTURE ,FARM size - Abstract
Simple Summary: Well-informed consumers demand world markets increase production transparence and adhere to sustainable fish husbandry practices. The Peruvian grunt inhabiting the rocky shores of American Southern Pacific has a high commercial value but its wild population is being harvested unsustainably. The cultivation of this grunt could alleviate fishing pressure on its natural population. Therefore, a bioeconomic insight would allow researchers to gauge cultivation bottlenecks and optimize processes as well as assess the transfer viability to the private sector. This study analyzes the economic feasibility of recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) in Peruvian grunt farming using field data from previous technological developments. The sensitivity analysis shows that the economic outcome of this grunt aquaculture using photovoltaic solar panels and a 15-month production cycle results in a profitable investment for a farm size of about 400 K/yr. Likewise, a similar profitable exploitation can be achieved by shortening the production cycle to 12 months. These achievements would enable the know-how transference to entrepreneurial initiatives in the semi-desert region of southern Peru and northern Chile. The Peruvian grunt Anisotremus scapularis is one of the most appreciated fish in Peruvian national markets. However, its reduced and irregular fishery is a paradigm of illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing (IUU) in the Peruvian–Chilean coastal region. An important technological advancement has been achieved in the last decade in capture, management, nutrition, and broodstock maintenance to boost pilot experiences on the aquaculture of this species. Therefore, it is pertinent to evaluate the economic viability of this candidate species to identify cultivation bottlenecks, optimize the process, and assess the transfer feasibility of the technical know-how to interest groups. In this study, we performed a sensitivity analysis to assess how market price and production size should make its commercialization profitable. We show that the use of photovoltaic solar panels and a raw production cycle of 15 months enables profitability at a ~400 k unit farm size at a commercial market price of 6.67 USD/kg, i.e., B/C = USD 1.14. Both, time to market and market price exerted the highest influence on the value of grunt farms; whereas, a reduction of the production cycle to 12 months by seed selection, optimized rearing conditions, and nutritional diets also provides a profitable investment, i.e., NPV = USD 287,054 with an IRR = 23.71% at a discount rate of 10% and B/C = USD 1.15. These scenarios pave the way for the transfer of technological know-how to entrepreneurial initiatives in the economically depressed coastal region of the Atacama Desert. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many natural products that show therapeutic activities are often difficult to synthesize or isolate and have unknown targets, hindering their development as drugs. Identifying druggable hotspots targeted by covalently acting anti-cancer natural products can enable pharmacological interrogation of these sites with more synthetically tractable compounds. Here, we used chemoproteomic platforms to discover that the anti-cancer natural product withaferin A targets C377 on the regulatory subunit PPP2R1A of the tumor-suppressor protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) complex leading to activation of PP2A activity, inactivation of AKT, and impaired breast cancer cell proliferation. We developed a more synthetically tractable cysteine-reactive covalent ligand, JNS 1-40, that selectively targets C377 of PPP2R1A to impair breast cancer signaling, proliferation, and in vivo tumor growth. Our study highlights the utility of using chemoproteomics to map druggable hotspots targeted by complex natural products and subsequently interrogating these sites with more synthetically tractable covalent ligands for cancer therapy.

Various regional anesthetics have been used for postoperative analgesia for pediatric craniotomy. In this case series, we report retrospectively collected data on postoperative pain and analgesic use in 44 patients who received ultrasound-guided occipital nerve blocks in addition to intravenous analgesic agents for posterior craniotomy procedures. In the immediate post-anesthesia care unit, pain was rated as zero or well controlled in 77% of patients, with only 43% requiring intravenous or demand patient-controlled analgesia opioids. There were no block-related complications. Occipital nerve blocks may constitute a safe and effective component of multimodal analgesia in this population.

GENE expression ,AMERICANS ,NATIVE Americans ,HAPLOTYPES ,GENETIC mutation - Abstract
Autosomal recessive conditions are often associated with homozygous mutations showing common ancestral origins and are frequently linked to consanguinity. However, an increasing number of compound heterozygotes are found in diverse, admixed populations. Oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) is a recessive condition caused mainly by mutations in the TYR and OCA2 genes involved in skin pigmentation. We previously screened the TYR and OCA2 genes in Colombian OCA families, identifying both known and novel mutations. Affected family members were found to be either homozygous or compound heterozygous for these gene mutations. Compound heterozygosity, where two different recessive alleles inherited from each parent lead to the expression of an autosomal recessive trait, poses a challenge in genetic diagnosis. Estimating the ancestry of these disease-associated variants, in conjunction with understanding the colonization history of admixed populations, can enhance the precision of association mapping in genetic studies. The aim of this study was to determine the ancestral origins of TYR and OCA2 mutations for OCA patients from two populations located in the Andes region of Colombia–Altiplano Cundiboyacense and Marinilla-Santuario. Comparison of OCA patients, and their unaffected relatives, with global reference populations showed a pattern of European and Native American admixture, with little African ancestry, for these two populations. Mutation-bearing TYR and OCA2 haplotypes from Colombian OCA patients were compared against haplotypes from Spanish, Native American, and Sephardic Jewish reference populations to infer their ancestral origins. For 12 OCA1 patients from the Altiplano Cundiboyacense region, 21 out of 24 mutated TYR haplotypes show Spanish origins, two show Native American origins, and one shows a Sephardic Jewish origin. The two Native American TYR haplotypes, and the single Sephardic Jewish haplotype, are all found in compound heterozygote patients, paired with the predominant Spanish TYR haplotype G47D. OCA in these three patients is a result of genetic admixture that brought together disease-causing mutations with distinct ancestral origins. Both OCA2 patients from the Marinilla-Santuario region show homozygous OCA2 mutations with a Spanish origin. These findings underscore the complexity of the genetic architecture of Mendelian disease in admixed American populations, with both consanguinity and admixture contributing to the risk of autosomal recessive OCA in Colombia. The high physiologic demands of sports create dynamic stress on joints, soft tissues, and nerves which may lead to injuries in the athlete. Electrodiagnostic (EDx) assessment is essential to identify the correct diagnosis, localization, and prognosis, to guide management of sports‐related neuropathies. A comprehensive review was performed to provide the EDx medical consultant with a practical approach to the common peripheral nerve disorders seen in athletes. Sports‐related neuropathies reviewed include transient traumatic irritation of the brachial plexus and/or cervical nerve roots (“Burners and stingers,”) suprascapular and axillary neuropathies, ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (UNE) in throwers, ulnar neuropathy at the hand/wrist in cyclists, multi‐ligamentous knee injury, and foot/ankle neuropathies including tarsal tunnel syndrome. A thorough understanding of peripheral anatomy, possible entrapment sites, mechanisms of injury, and key physical examination findings is essential for correct diagnosis. EDx assessments beyond routine studies are generally required for sports‐related neuropathy, which may not necessarily follow typical entrapment patterns. Adjunct diagnostic imaging, such as point‐of‐care ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging, are helpful tools to identify associated musculoskeletal pathology such as compressive cysts or nerve entrapment, which may be amenable to interventional or surgical treatment. When no clear reversible structural pathology exists, management of sports‐related neuropathy is athlete‐specific and generally multi‐modal, involving a combination of physical rehabilitation techniques to address muscle imbalances, load management, protective equipment, and interventional pain procedures. Simple Summary: Aquaculture is presented as a viable solution to overfishing and the growing demand for marine products. This study investigates the rearing of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in a recirculating system at 3000 m above sea level, in Copaquilla, northern Chile. A total of 5000 juvenile trout were transported from the Rio Blanco fish farm over 2100 km. For 20 months, growth parameters were evaluated, including specific growth rate, weight gain, feed conversion, survival, and Fulton's condition factor. The results indicated normal growth and good quality, confirming the feasibility of trout aquaculture at a high altitude. This suggests new opportunities for aquaculture in the Andean region of northern Chile. During the 20-month-long culture, several growth parameters were evaluated, including specific growth rate, percentage of weight growth, feed conversion factor, survival, and Fulton's condition factor. All these parameters were within the normal growth range for trout, evidencing good-quality growth of the organisms. The results offer evidence that rainbow trout farming at 3000 m above sea level is viable and presents a viable performance, opening new opportunities for aquaculture in northern Chile. UnlabelledUnraveling the drivers controlling the response and adaptation of biological communities to environmental change, especially anthropogenic activities, is a central but poorly understood issue in ecology and evolution. Comparative genomics studies suggest that lateral gene transfer (LGT) is a major force driving microbial genome evolution, but its role in the evolution of microbial communities remains elusive. To delineate the importance of LGT in mediating the response of a groundwater microbial community to heavy metal contamination, representative Rhodanobacter reference genomes were sequenced and compared to shotgun metagenome sequences. 16S rRNA gene-based amplicon sequence analysis indicated that Rhodanobacter populations were highly abundant in contaminated wells with low pHs and high levels of nitrate and heavy metals but remained rare in the uncontaminated wells. Sequence comparisons revealed that multiple geochemically important genes, including genes encoding Fe(2+)/Pb(2+) permeases, most denitrification enzymes, and cytochrome c553, were native to Rhodanobacter and not subjected to LGT. In contrast, the Rhodanobacter pangenome contained a recombinational hot spot in which numerous metal resistance genes were subjected to LGT and/or duplication. In particular, Co(2+)/Zn(2+)/Cd(2+) efflux and mercuric resistance operon genes appeared to be highly mobile within Rhodanobacter populations. Evidence of multiple duplications of a mercuric resistance operon common to most Rhodanobacter strains was also observed. Collectively, our analyses indicated the importance of LGT during the evolution of groundwater microbial communities in response to heavy metal contamination, and a conceptual model was developed to display such adaptive evolutionary processes for explaining the extreme dominance of Rhodanobacter populations in the contaminated groundwater microbiome.ImportanceLateral gene transfer (LGT), along with positive selection and gene duplication, are the three main mechanisms that drive adaptive evolution of microbial genomes and communities, but their relative importance is unclear. Some recent studies suggested that LGT is a major adaptive mechanism for microbial populations in response to changing environments, and hence, it could also be critical in shaping microbial community structure. However, direct evidence of LGT and its rates in extant natural microbial communities in response to changing environments is still lacking. Our results presented in this study provide explicit evidence that LGT played a crucial role in driving the evolution of a groundwater microbial community in response to extreme heavy metal contamination. It appears that acquisition of genes critical for survival, growth, and reproduction via LGT is the most rapid and effective way to enable microorganisms and associated microbial communities to quickly adapt to abrupt harsh environmental stresses.

Abstract Introduction This clinical audit aimed to evaluate performance of the Ottawa Knee Rule (OKR) and degree of compliance by emergency referrers for acute knee injuries in adults. Methods Knee radiography requests were analysed retrospectively for eligibility. Data were extracted from eligible requests under headings describing the OKR criteria, patient history, diagnosis and referrer profession. Sensitivity, specificity, negative likelihood ratio and positive likelihood ratio were calculated with 95% CI for the entire sample and each profession (consultant doctors, resident medical officers [RMO], physiotherapists and triage nurses) individually. The frequency of each OKR criterion and correlation with fracture, referrer compliance to the rule and the relative reduction in radiography were also calculated. Results Of 713 patients identified, 149 were enrolled by the eligibility criteria. The overall sensitivity, specificity, negative likelihood ratio and positive likelihood ratio of the OKR for knee fracture were 71% (95%CI, 49‐87%), 46% (95%CI, 37‐55%), 0.64 (95%CI, 0.33‐1.22) and 1.3 (95%CI, 0.96‐1.76), respectively. Physiotherapists and triage nurses demonstrated better rule performance than consultant doctors and RMOs, with a sensitivity of 100% and negative likelihood ratio of 0.0. Physiotherapists were most compliant at 73% (19/26). Only 85 requests were OKR positive and, when abiding by the rule, this would have reduced radiography by 43% (64/149). Conclusions In this first Australian study, moderate OKR performance and variable compliance by emergency referrers were observed. This led to unnecessary irradiation of patients without a fracture. The findings suggest emergency referrers could benefit from education on applying and documenting the OKR on radiography requests.
