Abstract

Polyvinyl alcohol‐engineered cementitious composite (PVA‐ECC) exhibits strain hardening and multiple cracking characteristics under tension. Its superior tensile behavior may also influence the flexural behavior of reinforced PVA‐ECC beams. This paper investigates the load capacity and failure mode of reinforced PVA‐ECC beams in bending. Seven beams with different tensile reinforcement ratios, including six PVA‐ECC beams and one conventional concrete beam, were tested in the experimental program. The influence of reinforcement ratio on load capacity and failure characteristics was discussed in detail. Test results showed that with increasing reinforcement ratio, the ultimate load of beams was increased, but the failure mode was changed from fracture of PVA‐ECC in the tension zone to crushing in the compression zone, thereby limiting the full development of beam ductility. An analytical model is proposed to calculate the load and the vertical deflection of beams. In the model, the tension‐stiffening effect of reinforcement after cracking of PVA‐ECC is considered by defining the bond–slip relationship of reinforcement embedded in PVA‐ECC. Comparisons are made between experimental results in the literature and those calculated by using the analytical model to show the accuracy of the model in predicting the load–deflection relationship, the moment–rotation relationship, and the moment–curvature relationship. Behaviour of Building Structures Subjected to Progressive Collapse gives in-depth and up-to-date quantitative and numerical analysis of building structures against progressive collapse. It does so at various levels, including bare steel joints, composite joints and sub-assemblages and frames under quasi-static loading conditions. The book provides analysis of the force transfer mechanisms of composite structures and reinforced concrete structures, along with detailed numerical models that shed light on the effects of critical parameters on progressive collapse resistances. It includes direct design methods that take into account various collapse-resisting mechanisms. Abstract

This paper presents an experimental study on the behaviour of precast beam-column sub-assemblages under middle column removal scenarios. By using Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC) in the beam-column joint and the cast-in-situ structural topping, the resistance and deformation capacity of the sub-assemblage was investigated. Besides, the compatible deformation between ECC and longitudinal steel reinforcement was observed at the initial stage, until the tensile strain capacity of ECC was exhausted. With increasing vertical displacement, a major crack was formed in the plastic hinge region, and severe localisation of rotation was recorded at large deformations. Top reinforcement in the beam eventually ruptured near the face of the end column stub, leading to collapse of the sub-assemblage. Conclusion was drawn from the experimental results that application of ECC to the precast beam-column sub-assemblage limits its deformation capacity as a result of higher bond strength between ECC and reinforcing bars. Abstract

This paper presents an experimental study on the structural behaviour of precast beam-column sub-assemblages under column removal scenarios, in which conventional concrete and engineered cementitious composites (ECC) were used in the cast-in-situ concrete topping and the beam-column joint. The specimens were restrained by horizontal and vertical load cells and tested under quasi-static loading condition. Experimental results indicate that at the initial stage ECC and steel reinforcement sustained tensile stresses compatibly and multiple cracking was observed in the ECC topping. When the tensile strain capacity of ECC was exhausted, major cracks were formed in the plastic hinge region, whereas at other sections ECC remained intact to transfer tensile stresses across cracks. Compared to conventional concrete, ECC resulted in more severe localisation of rotations in a limited region due to its tension-stiffening behaviour. Conclusions are drawn that application of ECC to structural topping and beam-column joints did not significantly enhance structural resistance of sub-assemblages under column removal scenarios. However, the calculated pseudo-static resistance of ECC sub-assemblage is greater than that of concrete specimen due to better energy-absorption capacity of ECC. Accepted version
