Abstract

AbstractThe choice of capital structure (capst) has significant implications for a firm’s financial performance and value. It is always a challenge for the firms to make the right decision on the capst proportion. The study identifies the firm variables that sway the capst decisions of the US automotive industry. In this study, we utilize unbalanced panel data from 86 firms for the period 2011–2022 making up a total of 670 firm/year observations. The dependent variable is the firm’s capital structure proxied by total debt ratio, long-term debt ratio, and short-term debt ratio, while the independent variables are sales growth, firm size, profitability of firm, and tangibility ratio. Through a quantitative approach and panel regression, the study concluded that profitability of firm has a negative and significant impact on both total debt ratio and short-term debt, while sales growth, firm size, and tangibility ratio have no significant impact on any of the debt variables representing capital structure. These findings provide insights into the financial practices of the US automotive industry sample and can support future decision-making in the industry. These insights can inform decision-making related to capst choices, financial risk management, and strategic planning for automotive industry firms.

Abstract

AbstractOne of the most pressing issues facing developing economies is how to provide expansion capital for existing businesses. However, this issue is more pressing in China, where private enterprises suffer significant financial constraints from capital market limitations. Therefore, the significance of obtaining third-party loan guarantees rises among private firms in the secondary loan market. This study investigates the relationship between loan guarantees and the firm’s cost of debt and the moderating effect of management earnings forecasts. We find that loan guarantees have a significant negative relationship with the firm’s cost of debt. However, a positive relationship between information asymmetry measures and loan guarantees is more pronounced, suggesting that loan guarantees reduce the significance of information asymmetry issues, which impair borrowing firms’ re-payment ability and increase the credit risk of guarantors and banks. In contrast, frequent and quality management earnings forecasts help firms to build their reputation in the market by reducing the concerns of information asymmetry, information risk, agency problems, and loan repayment with banks, which, in turn, benefit firms in reducing their cost of debt. Our study results are robust to the use of two-stage least square analysis, and Heckman two-stage treatment effect model. This work offers the latest contribution to the recent understanding of the effects of loan guarantees in reducing the cost of debt and the vital role of management earnings forecasts in firms’ growth.

Abstract

AbstractDrawing upon the resource-based view of the firm, this article employs this perspective to examine how new venture adaptiveness and innovative ambidexterity mediate the relationship between entrepreneurial bricolage and new venture growth within Bangladesh’s Ready-Made Garment Industry. The research employed purposive, convenience and snowball sampling techniques to gather data from 303 individuals engaged in wholesale and retail businesses. The study’s findings indicate a positive correlation between entrepreneurial bricolage and new venture growth. Moreover, the mediating effects of new venture adaptiveness and innovative ambidexterity in the relationship between entrepreneurial bricolage and new venture growth are statistically significant. This article proposes a set of tactics aimed at enhancing resource reconfiguration through adaptability and explores novel approaches to optimize resource effectiveness. The study offers substantial insights into new venture growth that could prove valuable to policymakers, entrepreneurs and authorities operating within Bangladesh’s Ready-Made Garment Industry.

Abstract

Considering the period of crises, the fluctuations in the stock market returns increase sharply. Consequently, volatility spillovers are observed across the equities. Thus, this paper investigates the volatility spillovers across the sector indices of the Russian economy during the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict (2022). For this purpose, the Diebold and Yilmaz (2012) spillover index methodology was used to model the risk spillover effects among the ten stock market sectors namely; chemicals, consumer, electric utilities, financials, metal and mining, oil and gas, telecommunications, and transport throughout February 24th, 2022-May 31st, 2023. The empirical findings showed significant volatility transmissions across the stock market sectors. Moreover, the market sectors including chemicals, electric utilities, transport, and telecommunications were the net recipients of the volatility spillovers. Meanwhile, the sectors consumer, financials, metal and mining, and oil and gas were recognized as the net transmitters. Furthermore, these findings provide useful implications for policymakers to investigate the volatility spillovers across stock market sectors, especially during times of crisis. Additionally, the empirical findings assist investors in gaining insight regarding the diversification of the investor’s portfolio assets to optimize returns, forecast possible future volatilities, and construct optimal portfolios.

Abstract

This study aims to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the impact of macro trade determinants on carbon dioxide emissions within Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) economies spanning from 1995 to 2022. Specifically, it explores this influence through the theoretical frameworks of the Pollution Haven Hypothesis (PHH) and the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC). Advanced econometric methods, including stepwise regression employing the fully modified least square method and Pool ordinary least square method, are utilized in this research. Granger causality and Johnson cointegration tests are employed to assess both long- and short-term dynamics. The findings reveal that macro trade factors such as total investment, trade reserves, per capita income, and net inflow of foreign direct investment exhibit significant associations with carbon dioxide emissions across both short and long-term timeframes. Particularly noteworthy is the positive and statistically significant impact of per capita income, total investment, foreign direct investment, and gross national savings on CO2 emissions. In contrast, trade reserves demonstrate a significant and negative impact on greenhouse gas emissions.

Abstract

The study aims to examine the influence of ‘firm-specific’ variables that determine the capital decisions of firms in the healthcare industry, considering the pre-pandemic and pandemic evidence. The study sample period is 2011-2021. With the present study, the interaction between factors specified by company and the impact due to pandemic on capital structuring decisioning in the healthcare field is thoroughly explored. The study considers all listed corporations from developed Asia Pacific Regions including Hong Kong, Australia, Japan, New Zealand and Singapore. The data is extracted from Refinitiv Database comprising annual data and omitting those records which are not complete or required data for variables resulting to a non-uniform cross sectional panel dataset. We used panel regression, supported by descriptive statistics and correlation. We found that factors such as size, profit and asset tangibility significantly influence borrowing decisions with notable differences in both pre and post pandemic period. This study supports future academics and has practical implications for the healthcare sector in deciding on their capital structure decisions for existing and future business expansion.

Abstract

Escalating utility costs and challenging financial circumstances make it increasingly difficult for consumers to afford essential services. This financial strain also spills over into the workplace, where employees resort to pilfering company assets, resulting in significant annual losses for these utility firms. Our study aims to identify the organizational factors and individual personality traits that motivate employees to engage in cable theft and vandalism, subsequently driving up tariffs. Utilizing the frameworks of the Reasoned Action Theory (TRA) and the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), we seek to elucidate the underlying motivations for such theft and destruction of property. Factors such as an unsatisfactory work environment, perceived unfair treatment by management, subpar wages, and easy opportunities for theft are identified as key motivators. To effectively mitigate these issues, targeted policy measures and strategies need to be implemented to influence employee attitudes and perceptions, thereby reducing incidents of theft and vandalism.

Abstract

The nano-precipitates with minimal misfit strengthen Al–Zn–Mg alloys by impeding dislocation motion. However, grain boundary precipitates (GBPs) are known to have a completely incoherent relationship with the matrix, making them less effective in strengthening the alloys. Instead, GBPs are recognized for preoccupying elements such as Zn or Mg, thereby diminishing the quantity of nano-strengthening phases. GBPs significantly influence the deformation and fracture behaviors of Al–Zn–Mg alloys by accelerating stress localization and crack formation. In this study, we investigated how the accumulation of dislocations in the GBP areas leads to stress localization and subsequent cracking, using micropillar tests and crystal plasticity finite element method (CP-FEM) analysis. The dislocation pile-up in the GBPs causes stress localization around the grain boundaries, inducing crack initiation and leading to intergranular fracture. These findings enhance our understanding of the role of GBPs in the deformation and cracking of Al–Zn–Mg alloys and may pave the way for new concepts in managing GBPs.

76. Innovative Teaching Learning Approaches to Distance Education: Measuring Students Learning Perceptions

Abstract

This research study was designed to explore the teaching-learning approaches to distance education and measuring students' learning perceptions. Using the multi-stage sampling technique, eight hundred and two (802) students of the Master of Arts in a distance education university were taken using the universal sampling. Data were collected through a self-developed questionnaire. The validity and reliability were properly ensured. Descriptive statistics such as mean gained score and standard deviation were applied to analyze the data. The study found that the time for solving home assignments was enough but the students were confused about the procedure to upload it on the learning management system (LMS).Online workshops were conducted by using the learning management system (LMS) but communication flaws were found in using (LMS) Aaghai portal. The students were quite satisfied with teaching-learning techniques, TV and radio programs, and the study material. It was also concluded that the students were not satisfied with the conduction of the online workshop through LMS due to unstable internet, no familiarization with LMS and the slow process of the Aaghai portal. It is recommended that the AIOU may provide proper guidelines through the conduction of training about the use of technology for assignments and workshops purposes.

Abstract

Recently, a significant amount of carbon dioxide emissions has grabbed the attention of global community. Thus, this study attempts to investigate the impact of inward foreign direct investment, and economic growth on carbon dioxide emissions in case of Italy. We took Italy as our sample country as it has committed to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. We took annual time series data for the dependent variable (CO2) and explanatory variables (GDP, FDI, Natural Resources) for the period ranging from 1990 to 2021. To examine the long run relationship between the variables we used autoregressive distributed lags bounds test of cointegration. The empirical findings revealed the existence of long-run relationships among the variables of the model. Furthermore, we also found that natural resources unidirectionally caused CO2 and GDP.

Abstract

This study examines the effects of ethical leadership on individual unlearning, explorative learning, and exploitative learning. We test the mediating role of affective supervisory commitment in the relationship between ethical leadership and these three types of learning. Structural equation modeling and bootstrapping are used to test these interrelationships based on three-wave survey data collected from 508 employees at five dental and surgical manufacturing firms in Pakistan. The results show that ethical leadership positively affects unlearned, explorative, and exploitative learning. We also find that affective commitment significantly mediates the effects of ethical leadership on unlearning and explorative learning but not the effect of ethical leadership on exploitative learning. In addition to the theoretical implications, this study has practical implications, especially for managers who are concerned about employees’ destructive behaviors and practices and who want to enhance employees’ skills and knowledge, as well as their organizations’ knowledge base.

Abstract

Summary: Human genetic studies of critical COVID-19 pneumonia have revealed the essential role of type I interferon-dependent innate immunity to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Conversely, an association between the HLA-B∗15:01 allele and asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection in unvaccinated individuals was recently reported, suggesting a contribution of pre-existing T cell-dependent adaptive immunity. We report a lack of association of classical HLA alleles, including HLA-B∗15:01, with pre-omicron asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection in unvaccinated participants in a prospective population-based study in the United States (191 asymptomatic vs. 945 symptomatic COVID-19 cases). Moreover, we found no such association in the international COVID Human Genetic Effort cohort (206 asymptomatic vs. 574 mild or moderate COVID-19 cases and 1,625 severe or critical COVID-19 cases). Finally, in the Human Challenge Characterisation study, the three HLA-B∗15:01 individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2 developed symptoms. As with other acute primary infections studied, no classical HLA alleles favoring an asymptomatic course of SARS-CoV-2 infection were identified.

Abstract

This study offers a multidimensional solution to mitigate the risk raised due to oil price volatility for navigating investments within the Russian financial landscape. This study assesses spillover effects between crypto assets and traditional financial assets encompassing equities, bonds, precious metals, foreign currency reserves, and crude oil prices. It adopts a significant temporal perspective to assess the potential ramifications of various financial crises, including global health crises and regional conflicts, on oil prices. Utilizing a daily frequency dataset spanning from January 1, 2018, to December 30, 2023, this study investigates the contagion effects of financial crises across normal, bullish, and bearish market conditions. It introduces oil price shocks for the first time to effectively gauge the impact of exogenous shocks on both crypto and conventional asset classes. Additionally, the study employs Cross Quantilogram (CQ) and TVP-VAR spillover estimation techniques to examine interconnectedness among the underlined assets. Furthermore, the study utilizes the quantile wavelet coherence estimation model to unveil volatility patterns, laying the groundwork for hypotheses related to diversification, hedging, and safe-haven investment strategies among the assets. The findings underscore the effectiveness of crypto assets in diversifying risk and serving as a hedge, particularly evident during crises, leading to heightened volatility. Conversely, government-owned bonds exhibit the lowest resilience to external shocks. Moreover, the dynamic interconnectedness among assets provides guidance to investors for implementing the proposed hypotheses that underscores the importance of prudent asset allocation policies for risk management, optimizing portfolio utilization.

Abstract

Although statins have served as the cornerstone for pharmacological lowering of lipid levels in atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk reduction, many patients are unable to achieve target doses of statin medication due to side effects or target levels of cholesterol reduction on statin monotherapy. The landscape of lipid-lowering strategies has expanded in recent years, with the emergence of therapies that make use of small interfering RNA (siRNA) and antisense oligonucleotides, in addition to traditional small-molecule agents. Non-statin therapies that have shown promising results in randomized controlled trials include adenosine triphosphate-citrate lyase inhibitors, proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin 9 (PCSK9)-inhibiting antibodies and siRNA, omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, and lipoprotein(a) gene-inhibiting siRNA and ASOs, in addition to older therapies such as ezetimibe. In contrast, cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) inhibitors have shown less promising results in randomized trials. The purpose of this narrative review is to summarize the evidence for these medications, with a focus on phase III randomized trials.
