Abstract

Nanoparticles are the magic bullets and at the leading edge in the field of nanotechnology, and their unique properties make these materials indispensable and superior in many areas, including the electronic field. Extensive applications of nanomaterials are incontrovertibly entering our living system. The increasing use of nanomaterials into the ecosystem is one of the crucial environmental factors that human being is facing. Nanomaterials raise noticeable toxicological concerns; particularly their accumulation in plants and the resultant toxicity may affect the food chain. Here, we analyzed the characterization of nanomaterials, such as graphene, Al2O3, TiO2, and semi‐insulating or conducting nanoparticles. Quantitative evaluation of the nanomaterials was conducted and their commercialization aspects were discussed. Various characterization techniques, scanning electron microscopy, X‐ray diffraction, and ultraviolet rays were utilized to identify the morphology, phase, absorbance, and crystallinity. In addition, we analyzed the effects of nanomaterials on plants. The toxicity of nanoparticles has severe effects on loss of morphology of the plants. Potential mechanisms including physical and physiological effects were analyzed. In future studies, it is indispensable to assess widely accepted toxicity evaluation for safe production and use of nanomaterials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This study deals with the development of new friction materials by incorporating Miscanthus fiber (5, 10, and 15 weight %, noted Mat1, Mat2, and Mat3, respectively). The friction materials were tested for their physical, mechanical, and microstructural properties as per international standard. The performance analysis was carried out using Chase friction test rig. Results revealed that the biomass is beneficial with good fade, wear resistance, and recovery characteristics, with the same trend of other natural fibers. 65. Characterization Shear Properties of PVC Foams Instrumented by Optical Fiber under Flexural Loading.

Abstract

The bending behavior of foam core sandwich composites has increasingly attracted attention and application in industries such as shipbuilding, aircraft, and wind turbine industries. The main objective of this research work is the assessment of shear strain in a foam core beam by means of optical fiber sensors during a bending test. Experimental studies were conducted on a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) foam beam in which three optical fibers were embedded in a longitudinal plane across the thickness of the foam core; straight optical fibers measure strains due to the tension/compression load, whereas the sinusoidal fibers catch strains due to the shear load. A finite element model was used to predict strain levels in order to validate and explain optical fiber sensor measurements from three- and four-point bending tests. The concordance of the shear properties identified by optical fiber sensor results and obtained by finite element simulation was evaluated to validate the newly developed technique of characterization. Abstract

Corrosion wreaks havoc on our properties, our lives, and environment. So, prevention of corrosion is of the utmost importance. Inorganic inhibitors are used to prevent corrosion, but these are toxic. Therefore, environment-friendly inhibitor is necessary. Green corrosion inhibitors are a probable solution to this. Their demand both environmentally and economically, is increasing. This review article briefly deals with different types of corrosion prevention methods, various green inhibitors with their source and methods of their efficient applications. The working principle of green inhibitors in different media is also explained. Corrosion determination methods are briefly discussed. Abstract

In the first part of this paper, a viscoelastic model is used to numerically study the cellular foam core fatigue behaviour. Material's temperature evolution is quantified with a numerical/experimental confrontation. In the second part, the slamming phenomenon is discussed by measuring the panel flexural strain on a racing sailboat during navigation. Making use of these results, a new slamming test rig was developed to evaluate the fatigue of sandwich structure under realistic loading. 72. Impact of hot molding temperature and duration on braking behavior of friction material.

Abstract

The manufacturing process of brake materials used for braking applications consists of a succession of steps among which the hot molding has a major impact on properties and performance of materials. In this paper, impact of hot molding temperature and duration on mechanical and thermal properties of friction materials developed with simplified formulation was investigated. Two different hot molding conditions were studied: condition 1 (low temperature associated to long duration) and condition 2 (high temperature associated to short duration). Braking behavior, thermo-mechanical phenomena and wear and friction mechanisms were also investigated. Results indicated that hot molding conditions did not significantly affect mechanical properties and tribological behavior, but they had impact on thermal properties (material molded according to condition 1, material A presented a higher thermal conductivity) and on wear mechanisms involved in the contact. In addition, results revealed that the studied hot molding conditions impacted thermal localization recorded during braking that was denser for the disc rubbed against material B (material molded according to condition 2). Abstract

This article describes and explains the tribological tests and methods for the evaluation of the performance of the brake friction materials. It starts by discussing the particularities of these materials and the variation of characterization tests, which can experimentally simulate many aspects of brake situation but with a large field of tribo-test, from standard to specific protocol. Examples of preparation, procedures, instrumentation, and analysis results for the tribological aspect testing ranging from the scale of vehicle braking performance (by methods including inertia dynamometers, Krauss testing, friction assessment screening test, and Chase testing) to simplified test using reduced-scale prototypes for small-sample friction, are explained. A particular attention is attributed to the discussion of the viability of the friction coefficient report in relation to the material properties and brake compound performance. At the end of this article, the guarantee of the performance output or ranking evaluated by such experimental methods is discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Life time improvement of hot working tools becomes one of the major industrial issue unsufficiently mastered. Indeed, loadings induced by hot forming involve coupling between thermal, mechanical, tribological and physicochemical phenomena. They lead to multiple degradation modes (mainly by plastic deformation, thermo-mechanical fatigue, friction and oxidation). Friction induces one of the most detrimental damage, which is difficult to apprehend and to control allowing for the complexity of engaged couplings.This thesis deals with wear of tool steel X40CrMoV5-1 in the case of hot forging of brass. Damage and wear mechanisms were analyzed through an expertise of matrices after used in production. It reveals different types of damage, activated thanks to location and exposure of the matrix surface to cyclic loadings induced during forging. A scenario of a three-body abrasion is proposed maintained by working cycles and wherein brass and toll steel oxides are crucial.Oxidation and pre-oxidized tribological behavior of tool steel were investigated. An original test is proposed to study the influence of hot working cycling on friction-oxidation coupling and its effects on the wear of tool steel. A specific tribometer has been developed. The friction tests are defined by analogy with the hot-working cycle, without reproducing the forming process, favoring formation and trapping of oxides inside the contact; L’amélioration de la durée de vie des outillages de mise en forme à chaud constitue un enjeu industriel important et encore mal maitrisé. En effet, les sollicitations induites lors de la mise en forme mettent en jeu des couplages impliquant des phénomènes thermiques, mécaniques, tribologiques et physicochimiques. Les modes de dégradation engendrés sont multiples, principalement par déformation plastique, par fatigue thermomécanique, par frottement et par oxydation. Les dégradations par frottement demeurent parmi les plus pénalisantes et les plus difficiles à appréhender et à maîtriser compte tenu de la complexité des couplages mis en jeu.Cette thèse aborde l’usure de l’acier à outil X40CrMoV5-1 dans le cas du matriçage à chaud du laiton. Les mécanismes d’endommagement et d’usure ont été analysés par le biais d’une expertise de matrices usées en production. Elle révèle différents types de dégradations, activés selon la localisation et l’exposition des surfaces aux sollicitations cycliques de matriçage. Elle a permis d’établir un scénario d’usure par abrasion à trois corps entretenu par le cyclage et dans lequel les oxydes du laiton et de l’acier à outil sont déterminants.L’oxydation de l’acier à outil et son comportement tribologique dans un état pré-oxydé ont été étudiés. Un essai original est proposé pour étudier l’influence du cyclage de matriçage sur le couplage frottement oxydation et ses conséquences sur l’usure. Un tribomètre spécifique a été développé et mis au point. Les essais de frottement reposent sur une analogie avec le cycle de matriçage, sans reproduire la mise en forme, et un contact conforme favorable à la formation et au piégeage des oxydes

Abstract

International audience; Study of friction-wear behaviour of X40CrMoV5-1 steel under static oxidation on slow sliding. This article deals with the friction-wear behaviour of X40CrMoV5-1 steel under static oxidation, slow sliding velocity and small sliding distance, without overlap to study oxide-induced friction and wear mechanisms. Characterisation of oxide-layer growth is established using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), optical profilometry and X-ray diffraction. Friction tests are carried out on a pin-on-disc configuration. The study shows a transition between a severe-wear regime driven by abrasion and debris detachment to a low-wear regime induced by a tribological circuit where oxides contribute to the formation of a protective third-body layer.
