The genus Pyrgomorphella Bolivar, 1904, is heterogeneous and badly in need of revision (Kevan, 1956, Publ. cult. Com,panh. Diamant. Angola, 29: 107-133; 1962, Ent. mon. Mag. 98: 4-7; 1962, Proc. Calif. Acad. Sci. (4), 31: 227-248). Several species originally placed in it have already been transferred to other genera, but, in the course of recent investigations by the authors on the phallic structures of the Pyrgomorphidae as a whole, it has been found necessary to remove three more species from the genus, namely, P. serbica (PanCie in Brunner von Watten wyl, 1882), P. rugosa Key, 1937, and P. capensis Key, 1937. Since these species do not fit into previously recognized genera, it has also become necessary to erect new ones to contain them —that for the first species being the only genus peculiar to the Palaeartic region proper. On the basis of the description of the female, P. turcica Karabat 1961, appears to belong to the same genus also.

3 láminas, Descamps and Wintrebert (1966 a, b) have recently shown that previous concepts of the genus Geloius Saussure were erroneously founded, that the type species, Geloius nasutus Saussure is related quite closely to Pseudogeloius Dirsh, and that, consequently, the tribal names Geloiini Bolivar, 1905, and Pseudogeloiini Kevan and Akbar, 1964, are synonyrnous. The best known species of Geloius (namely finoti Bolivar), which had formed the basis of Kevan and Akbar's interpretation of the tribe Geloiini, was found to be generically distinct and has become the type species of Acanthopyrgus Descamps et Wintrebert. The tribe containing this genus was renamed Sagittacrini — or, more correctly, Sagittacridini — the type genus of which is the related Sagittacris Dirsh.

During investigations into the taxonomy of Atractomorpha (Banerjee and Kevan, 1960; Banerjee, 1960), certain morphological observations were made, and, since very little previous information has been published on the morphology of Pyrgomorphidae (cf. Uvarov, 1948), it was considered that it might be of some value to set down such facts as are now known concerning Atractomorpha. Owing to the lack of living, or suitably preserved material, however, it was not found possible to study the circulatory, tracheal or excretory systems, or to add to what was previously known about the musculature.

Es werden die orthopteroiden Insekten behandelt, welche H. Knipper zwischen dem 7. Januar und dem 10. Dezember 1952 in Ostafrika sammelte. Der größte Teil des Materials stammt aus dem nordöstlichen Tanganyika; außerdem wurde auch eine kleine Anzahl Arten hinzugenommen, welche er während einer Unterbrechung der Hinreise in und um Mogadishu (Mogadiscio) eintrug. Bei den neubeschriebenen Arten wurden auch von D. K. McE. Kevan und anderen Personen gesammelte Exemplare einbezogen. Zwei neue Acridoidea-Arten aus Nordost-Tanganyika, von denen keiner der beiden Verfasser Material sammelte, werden ebenfalls beschrieben. Ökologische Angaben werden für fast alle, biologische für einige Arten gemacht. 34 Arten einbegriffen, welche nur bis zur Gattung bestimmt werden können, werden für Tanganyika gemeldet: 2 Arten Phasmida, 3 Gryllacridoidea, 16Tettigonioidea, 13 Grylloidea, 1 Tridactyloidea, 4 Tetrigoidea, 78 Acridoidea, 2 Dermapteroida, 23 Mantodea und 11 Blattodea. 16 weitere Arten Acridoidea und eine Art Mantodea werden lediglich aus Somalia, eine weitere Art Acridoidea wird aus Somalia, Kenya und Abessinien gemeldet. Nachstehende Arten und Formen werden von Kevan neu beschrieben: Tettigonioidea: Homorocoryphus curvipennis; Acridoidea: Usambilla affinis, Parepistaurus rufijianus, Caloptenopsis somalica, Kassongia orientalis, K. vittata, Acrotylus knipperi, A. trifasciatus, A. t. ab. roseus, Pycnodictya galinieri ab. citrina. Ferner wird das bisher unbekannte 9 von Orthochtha lindneri Kevan, 1955, beschrieben. Kevan (1952), in discussing the genus Borneacris Ramme, 1941, erected a tribe, Borneacridini within what was then the subfamily Trigonopteryginae, to contain it. In this tribe he included also the genus Moultonia I. Bolivar, 1914, but with a query, since he had been unable to see a specimen. Neither the male holotype of the single included species, M. violacea I. Bolivar, 1914, nor the only other known specimen, a female erroaeously designated as an allotype of the same species by Ramme (1941), had been traced when Kevan (1957) confirmed bis opinion that Moultonia and Borneacris belonged to the same group, Ramme's illustrations leaving little doubt of tue correctness of this action. The tribe containing the two genera was raised to subfamily status rwithin the Trigonopterygidae (recently elevated to family status by Dirsh (1956)), since the Borneacridines, although clearly related to the Trigonopterygines, are very distinct trom them.

The mainly tropical and subtropical acridoid family Pyrgomorphidae includes over 140 genera grouped in 30 tribes. The present work serves as a general introduction to a comparative morphological study of the phallic structures, female subgenital armature and receptacula seminis of every tribe and almost every known g-enus and subgenus. A general accottnt and literature review in respect of the acridoid phallic complex are given and the special features of the Pyrgomorphidae are discussed. An attempt is made to homologize phallic terminology throughout the Acridoidea. A synopsis of the phallic characters of the Pyrgomorphidae in general is given. A general account and literature review are also given in respect of the female subgenital armature and receptaculum seniins of the Acridoidea, with special reference to the Pyrgomorphidae. In discussing the receptaculum seminis, different orthopteroid orders are considered with particular reference to the bifid or paired nature of the organ and the varous modifications as they occur throughout the group. The paired condition is believed to be primitive in Dictyoptera, Isoptera and Orthoptera, s. str. In the last order, parallel variations exist within the suborders Ensifera and Caelifera, particularly Pyrgomorphidae. The homologies in the receptaculum seminis throug-hout the different families of Acridoidea are discussed and a hypothetical generalized form of the organ is illustrated. Terminology is reviewed and revised for both subgenital armature and receptaculum seminis. Synonymic glossaries of the terms adopted in the present studies for both male and female genitalic structures in the Pyrgomorphidae are given. For the most part the terms used are generally applicable throughout the Acridoidea, although there are a few structures that are peculiar to Pyrgoinorphidae. Some structures found in other groups are absent in Pyrgomorphidae.

A year or two ago, the author published a monograph of the Chrotogonini (Kevan, 1959). This contained a very comprehensive bibliography and full synonymies for the different genera and species, but, as is inevitable in such cases, there were a few minor errors and olle or two omissions which should be corrected. One of the missing type specimens has come to light and is also reported on. A number of references have also appeared since the Monograph lwent to press and opportunity is now taken to bring the bibliography more up to date. Not included in the following are references made by Kevan (1959 a), since that article was published consecutively and together with the Monograph, and citations from it would be redundant. Neither are additional locality records for the various species 'which have since come to hand included since they add nothing to the known pattern of distribution.

1 lámina, The Desmopterini, other than the genus Desmopterella Ramme, 1941, were revised by Kevan (1963). Since then, ,Kevan and Akbar (1964) have erected a new subgenus, Desmopterula, of Desmoptera Bolivar, 1884, to contain D. degenerata Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1898 (with its subspecies D. molucensis Bolivar, 1905) and D. truncatipennis S jöstedt, 1920. As indicated by Kevan (1966), however, Desmopterula is a synonym of Platydesmoptera Ramme, 1941, which must now be revived for the species indicated. Kevan (1966) discusses the Philippine genus Apodesmoptera Rehn, 1951, has erected a new species and has elevated A. mira luzonica Kevan, 1963, to full specific status within a new subgenus.
