51. The origins of noise in the Zeeman splitting of spin qubits in natural-silicon devices

Abstract

We measure and analyze noise-induced energy-fluctuations of spin qubits defined in quantum dots made of isotopically natural silicon. Combining Ramsey, time-correlation of single-shot measurements, and CPMG experiments, we cover the qubit noise power spectrum over a frequency range of nine orders of magnitude without any gaps. We find that the low-frequency noise spectrum is similar across three different devices suggesting that it is dominated by the hyperfine coupling to nuclei. The effects of charge noise are smaller, but not negligible, and are device dependent as confirmed from the noise cross-correlations. We also observe differences to spectra reported in GaAs {[Phys. Rev. Lett. 118, 177702 (2017), Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 236803 (2008)]}, which we attribute to the presence of the valley degree of freedom in silicon. Finally, we observe $T_2^*$ to increase upon increasing the external magnetic field, which we speculate is due to the increasing field-gradient of the micromagnet suppressing nuclear spin diffusion., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

This study challenges strictly guaranteeing ``dissipativity'' of a dynamical system represented by neural networks learned from given time-series data. Dissipativity is a crucial indicator for dynamical systems that generalizes stability and input-output stability, known to be valid across various systems including robotics, biological systems, and molecular dynamics. By analytically proving the general solution to the nonlinear Kalman-Yakubovich-Popov (KYP) lemma, which is the necessary and sufficient condition for dissipativity, we propose a differentiable projection that transforms any dynamics represented by neural networks into dissipative ones and a learning method for the transformed dynamics. Utilizing the generality of dissipativity, our method strictly guarantee stability, input-output stability, and energy conservation of trained dynamical systems. Finally, we demonstrate the robustness of our method against out-of-domain input through applications to robotic arms and fluid dynamics. Abstract

Catheter ablation has limited therapeutic efficacy against non-paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF), and electrophysiological studies using mapping catheters have been applied to evaluate the AF substrate. However, many of these approaches rely on detecting excitation timing from electrograms (ECGs), potentially compromising their effectiveness in complex AF scenarios. Herein, we introduce Deep-learning-based Electrode Action Potential Mapping (DEAP Mapping), a deep learning model designed to reconstruct membrane potential images from annotation-free unipolar ECG signals. We conducted ex vivo experiments using porcine hearts (N = 6) to evaluate the accuracy of DEAP Mapping by simultaneously performing fluorescence measurement of membrane potentials and measurements of epicardial unipolar ECGs. Membrane potentials estimated via DEAP Mapping were compared with those measured via optical mapping. We assessed the clinical applicability of DEAP Mapping by comparing the DEAP Mapping's estimations from clinically measured catheter electrode signals with those from established electrode-mapping techniques. DEAP Mapping accurately estimated conduction delays and blocks in ex vivo experiments. Phase variance analysis, an AF substrate evaluation method, revealed that the substrate identified from optical mapping closely resembled that identified from DEAP Mapping estimations (structural similarity index of >0.8). In clinical evaluations, DEAP Mapping estimation observed several conduction delays and blocks that were not observed with existing methods, indicating that DEAP Mapping can estimate excitation patterns with higher spatiotemporal resolution. Abstract

Self-supervised learning, such as with the wav2vec 2.0 framework significantly improves the accuracy of end-to-end automatic speech recognition (ASR). Wav2vec 2.0 has been applied to single-channel end-to-end ASR models. In this work, we explored a self-supervised learning method for a multi-channel end-to-end ASR model based on the wav2vec 2.0 framework. As the multi-channel end-to-end ASR model, we focused on a multi-channel neural transducer. In pre-training, we compared three different methods for feature quantization to train a multi-channel conformer audio encoder: joint quantization, feature-wise quantization and channel-wise quantization. In fine-tuning, we trained the multi-channel conformer-transducer. All experiments were conducted using the far-field in-house and CHiME-4 datasets. The results of the experiments showed that feature-wise quantization was the most effective among the methods. We observed a 66% relative reduction in character error rate compared with the model without any pre-training for the far-field in-house dataset.

55. Intermediate direct preference optimization

Abstract

We propose the intermediate direct preference optimization (DPO) method to calculate the DPO loss at selected intermediate layers as an auxiliary loss for finetuning large language models (LLMs). The conventional DPO method fine-tunes a supervised fine-tuning (SFT) model by calculating the DPO loss using logits from the final layer. In our intermediate DPO approach, DPO losses are calculated using the logits from K-selected intermediate layers and averaged to obtain the intermediate DPO loss. For training the intermediate DPO model, the final loss is obtained by calculating the weighted sum of the DPO and intermediate DPO losses. During inference, the intermediate DPO model decodes using the final layer logits similarly to the conventional DPO model. In experiments using the ultrafeedback dataset, the performance of the intermediate DPO model was evaluated using GPT-4. As a result, the intermediate DPO model trained using the intermediate DPO loss calculated at the 22nd layer of a 32-layer SFT model achieved win rates of 52.5% and 67.5% against the conventional DPO and SFT models, respectively, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed method. Furthermore, we report the relationships among the position of the selected intermediate layers, the number of layers, and performance.

Abstract

We present a measurement of $|V_{ub}|$ from a simultaneous study of the charmless semileptonic decays $B^0\to\pi^- \ell^+ \nu_{\ell}$ and $B^+\to\rho^0 \ell^+\nu_{\ell}$, where $\ell = e, \mu$. This measurement uses a data sample of 387 million $B\overline{B}$ meson pairs recorded by the Belle~II detector at the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider between 2019 and 2022. The two decays are reconstructed without identifying the partner $B$ mesons. We simultaneously measure the differential branching fractions of $B^0\to\pi^- \ell^+ \nu_{\ell}$ and $B^+\to\rho^0 \ell^+\nu_{\ell}$ decays as functions of $q^2$ (momentum transfer squared). From these, we obtain total branching fractions $B(B^0\to\pi^- \ell^+ \nu_{\ell}) = (1.516 \pm 0.042 (\mathrm{stat}) \pm 0.059 (\mathrm{syst})) \times 10^{-4}$ and $B(B^+\to\rho^0 \ell^+\nu_{\ell}) = (1.625 \pm 0.079 (\mathrm{stat}) \pm 0.180 (\mathrm{syst})) \times 10^{-4}$. By fitting the measured $B^0\to\pi^- \ell^+ \nu_{\ell}$ partial branching fractions as functions of $q^2$, together with constraints on the non-perturbative hadronic contribution from lattice QCD calculations, we obtain $|V_{ub}|$ = $(3.93 \pm 0.09 \pm 0.13 \pm 0.19) \times 10^{-3}$. Here, the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is theoretical.

Abstract

We report measurements of time-dependent $CP$ asymmetries in $B^0 \to K^0_S \pi^0 \gamma$ decays based on a data sample of $(388\pm6)\times10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ events collected at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance with the Belle II detector. The Belle II experiment operates at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. We measure decay-time distributions to determine $CP$-violating parameters $S$ and $C$. We determine these parameters for two ranges of $K^0_S \pi^0$ invariant mass: $m(K^0_S \pi^0)\in (0.8, 1.0)$ $GeV/c^2$, which is dominated by $B^0 \to K^{*0} (\to K^0_S \pi^0) \gamma$ decays, and a complementary region $m(K^0_S \pi^0)\in (0.6, 0.8)\cup(1.0, 1.8)$ $GeV/c^2$. Abstract

We present measurements of $B^{+}\rightarrow\rho^{+}\gamma$ and $B^{0}\rightarrow\rho^{0}\gamma$ decays using a combined data sample of $772 \times 10^6$ $B\overline{B}$ pairs collected by the Belle experiment and $387\times 10^6$ $B\overline{B}$ pairs collected by the Belle II experiment in $e^{+}e^{-}$ collisions at the $\Upsilon (4S)$ resonance. After an optimized selection, a simultaneous fit to the Belle and Belle II data sets yields $114\pm 12$ $B^{+}\rightarrow\rho^{+}\gamma$ and $99\pm 12$ $B^{0}\rightarrow\rho^{0}\gamma$ decays. The measured branching fractions are $(13.1^{+2.0 +1.3}_{-1.9 -1.2})\times 10^{-7}$ and $(7.5\pm 1.3^{+1.0}_{-0.8})\times 10^{-7}$ for $B^{+}\rightarrow\rho^{+}\gamma$ and $B^{0}\rightarrow\rho^{0}\gamma$ decays, respectively, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. We also measure the isospin asymmetry $A_{\rm I}(B\rightarrow\rho\gamma)=(10.9^{+11.2 +7.8}_{-11.7 -7.3})\%$ and the direct CP asymmetry $A_{CP}(B^{+}\rightarrow\rho^{+}\gamma)=(-8.2\pm 15.2^{+1.6}_{-1.2})\%$., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We present a search for the baryon number $B$ and lepton number $L$ violating decays $\tau^- \rightarrow \Lambda \pi^-$ and $\tau^- \rightarrow \bar{\Lambda} \pi^-$ produced from the $e^+e^-\to \tau^+\tau^-$ process, using a 364 fb$^{-1}$ data sample collected by the Belle~II experiment at the SuperKEKB collider. No evidence of signal is found in either decay mode, which have $|\Delta(B-L)|$ equal to $2$ and $0$, respectively. Upper limits at 90\% credibility level on the branching fractions of $\tau^- \rightarrow \Lambda\pi^-$ and $\tau^- \rightarrow \bar{\Lambda}\pi^-$ are determined to be $4.7 \times 10^{-8}$ and $4.3 \times 10^{-8}$, respectively., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

A series of data samples was collected with the Belle~II detector at the SuperKEKB collider from March 2019 to June 2022. We determine the integrated luminosities of these data samples using three distinct methodologies involving Bhabha ($e^+e^- \to e^+e^-(n\gamma)$), digamma ($e^+e^- \to \gamma\gamma(n\gamma)$), and dimuon ($e^+e^- \to \mu^+ \mu^- (n\gamma)$) events. The total integrated luminosity obtained with Bhabha, digamma, and dimuon events is ({426.88} $\pm$ 0.03 $\pm$ {2.61})~fb$^{-1}$, ({429.28} $\pm$ 0.03 $\pm$ {2.62})~fb$^{-1}$, and ({423.99} $\pm$ 0.04 $\pm$ {3.83})~fb$^{-1}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. Abstract

The notion of ordinal concavity of utility functions has recently been considered by Hafalir, Kojima, Yenmez, and Yokote in economics while there exist earlier related works in discrete optimization and operations research. In the present note we consider functions satisfying ordinal concavity and introduce a weaker notion of ordinal weak-concavity as well. We also investigate useful behaviors of ordinally (weak-)concave functions and related choice correspondences, show a characterization of ordinally weak-concave functions, and give an efficient algorithm for maximizing ordinally concave functions. We further examine a duality in ordinally (weak-)concave functions and introduce the lexicographic composition of ordinally weak-concave functions.

Abstract

Highly efficient anti-Stokes (AS) photoluminescence (PL) is observed from halide perovskite quantum dots (QDs) due to their strong electron-phonon interactions. The AS PL is particularly intriguing as it suggests the potential for semiconductor optical cooling if the external quantum efficiency approaches 100%. However, the PL quantum efficiency in QDs is primarily dominated by multiparticle nonradiative Auger recombination processes under intense photoexcitation, which impose limits on the optical cooling gain. Here, we investigate the Auger recombination of dot-in-crystal perovskites. We quantitatively estimate the maximum optical cooling gain and the corresponding excitation intensity. We further conducted optical cooling experiments and demonstrate a maximum photo-cooling of approximately 9 K from room temperature. Additionally, we confirmed that increasing the excitation intensity leads to a transition from photo-cooling to photo-heating. These observations are consistent with our time-resolved measurements, offering insights into the potential and limitations of optical cooling in semiconductor QDs.

Abstract

Unveiling the emergence and prevalence of massive/bright galaxies during the epoch of reionization and beyond, within the first 600 million years of the Universe, stands as a pivotal pursuit in astronomy. Remarkable progress has been made by JWST in identifying an immense population of bright galaxies, which hints at exceptionally efficient galaxy assembly processes. However, the underlying physical mechanisms propelling their rapid growth remain unclear. With this in mind, millimeter and submillimeter-wave spectroscopic observations of redshifted far-infrared spectral lines, particularly the [O III] 88 micron and [C II] 158 micron lines, offers a crucial pathway to address this fundamental query. To this end, we develop a dual-polarization sideband-separating superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) mixer receiver, FINER, for the Large Millimeter Telescope (LMT) situated in Mexico. Harnessing advancements from ALMA's wideband sensitivity upgrade (WSU) technology, FINER covers radio frequencies spanning 120-360 GHz, delivering an instantaneous intermediate frequency (IF) of 3-21 GHz per sideband per polarization, which is followed by a set of 10.24 GHz-wide digital spectrometers. At 40% of ALMA's light-collecting area, the LMT's similar atmospheric transmittance and FINER's 5 times wider bandwidth compared to ALMA culminate in an unparalleled spectral scanning capability in the northern hemisphere, paving the way for finer spectral-resolution detection of distant galaxies., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, and 3 tables. Abstract

Spectroscopic observations of the far-infrared [O III] and [C II] lines present a pathway to explore the mechanisms of the emergence of massive galaxies in the epoch of reionization and beyond, which is one of the most fundamental questions in astronomy. To address this question, the Far-Infrared Nebular Emission Receiver (FINER) project is developing two wideband dual-polarization sideband-separating heterodyne receivers at 120--210 GHz and 210--360 GHz for the Large Millimeter Telescope (LMT) in Mexico. Compared with Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), LMT provides 40% of ALMA's light-collecting area and a similar atmospheric transmittance, but FINER plans to have an instantaneous intermediate frequency (IF) of 3--21 GHz per sideband per polarization which is five times wider than current ALMA's bandwidth. Therefore, FINER is going to offer cutting-edge spectral scanning capability in the next several years. The project is currently in an active development phase. Abstract

We present measurements of the branching fractions of eight $\overline B{}^0\to D^{(*)+} K^- K^{(*)0}_{(S)}$, $B^{-}\to D^{(*)0} K^- K^{(*)0}_{(S)}$ decay channels. The results are based on data from SuperKEKB electron-positron collisions at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance collected with the Belle II detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $362~\text{fb}^{-1}$. The event yields are extracted from fits to the distributions of the difference between expected and observed $B$ meson energy, and are efficiency-corrected as a function of $m(K^-K^{(*)0}_{(S)})$ and $m(D^{(*)}K^{(*)0}_{(S)})$ in order to avoid dependence on the decay model. These results include the first observation of $\overline B{}^0\to D^+K^-K_S^0$, $B^-\to D^{*0}K^-K_S^0$, and $\overline B{}^0\to D^{*+}K^-K_S^0$ decays and a significant improvement in the precision of the other channels compared to previous measurements. The helicity-angle distributions and the invariant mass distributions of the $K^- K^{(*)0}_{(S)}$ systems are compatible with quasi-two-body decays via a resonant transition with spin-parity $J^P=1^-$ for the $K^-K_S^0$ systems and $J^P= 1^+$ for the $K^-K^{*0}$ systems. We propose a Bayesian method for deriving the distribution of restricted mean survival time (RMST) using posterior samples, which accounts for covariates and heterogeneity among clusters based on a parametric model for survival time. We derive an explicit RMST equation by devising an integral of the survival function, allowing for the calculation of not only the mean and credible interval but also the mode, median, and probability of exceeding a certain value. Additionally, We propose two methods: one using random effects to account for heterogeneity among clusters and another utilizing frailty. We developed custom Stan code for the exponential, Weibull, log-normal frailty, and log-logistic models, as they cannot be processed using the brm functions in R. We evaluate our proposed methods through computer simulations and analyze real data from the eight Empowered Action Group states in India to confirm consistent results across states after adjusting for cluster differences. In conclusion, we derived explicit RMST formulas for parametric models and their distributions, enabling the calculation of the mean, median, mode, and credible interval. Our simulations confirmed the robustness of the proposed methods, and using the shrinkage effect allowed for more accurate results for each cluster.

Abstract

We consider a machine learning setup where one training dataset is used to train multiple models across slightly different data distributions. This occurs when customized models are needed for various deployment environments. To reduce storage and training costs, we propose the DRSSS method, which combines distributionally robust (DR) optimization and safe sample screening (SSS). The key benefit of this method is that models trained on the reduced dataset will perform the same as those trained on the full dataset for all possible different environments. In this paper, we focus on covariate shift as a type of data distribution change and demonstrate the effectiveness of our method through experiments.

Abstract

Topological design of pi-electrons in zigzag-edged graphene nanoribbons (ZGNRs) leads to a wealth of magnetic quantum phenomena and exotic quantum phases. Symmetric ZGNRs typically exhibit antiferromagnetically coupled spin-ordered edge states. Eliminating cross-edge magnetic coupling in ZGNRs not only enables the realization of a new class of ferromagnetic quantum spin chains, enabling the exploration of quantum spin physics and entanglement of multiple qubits in the 1D limit, but also establishes a long-sought carbon-based ferromagnetic transport channel, pivotal for ultimate scaling of GNR-based quantum electronics. However, designing such GNRs entails overcoming daunting challenges, including simultaneous breaking of structural and spin symmetries, and designing elegant precursors for asymmetric fabrication of reactive zigzag edges. Here, we report a general approach for designing and fabricating such ferromagnetic GNRs in the form of Janus GNRs with two distinct edge configurations. Guided by Lieb's theorem and topological classification theory, we devised two JGNRs by asymmetrically introduced a topological defect array of benzene motifs to one zigzag edge, while keeping the opposing zigzag edge unchanged. This breaks structural symmetry and creates a sublattice imbalance within each unit cell, initiating a spin symmetry breaking. Three Z-shape precursors are designed to fabricate one parent ZGNR and two JGNRs with an optimal lattice spacing of the defect array for a complete quench of the magnetic edge states at the defective edge. Characterization via scanning probe microscopy/spectroscopy and first-principles density functional theory confirms the successful fabrication of Janus GNRs with ferromagnetic ground state delocalised along the pristine zigzag edge., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We present a study of $\Xi_{c}^{0}\to\Xi^{0}\pi^{0}$, $\Xi_{c}^{0}\to\Xi^{0}\eta$, and $\Xi_{c}^{0}\to\Xi^{0}\eta^{\prime}$ decays using the Belle and Belle~II data samples, which have integrated luminosities of 980~$\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ and 426~$\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$, respectively. We measure the following relative branching fractions $${\cal B}(\Xi_{c}^{0}\to\Xi^{0}\pi^{0})/{\cal B}(\Xi_{c}^{0}\to\Xi^{-}\pi^{+}) = 0.48 \pm 0.02 ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.03 ({\rm syst}) ,$$ $${\cal B}(\Xi_{c}^{0}\to\Xi^{0}\eta)/{\cal B}(\Xi_{c}^{0}\to\Xi^{-}\pi^{+}) = 0.11 \pm 0.01 ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.01 ({\rm syst}) ,$$ $${\cal B}(\Xi_{c}^{0}\to\Xi^{0}\eta^{\prime})/{\cal B}(\Xi_{c}^{0}\to\Xi^{-}\pi^{+}) = 0.08 \pm 0.02 ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.01 ({\rm syst}) $$ for the first time, where the uncertainties are statistical ($\rm stat$) and systematic ($\rm syst$). By multiplying by the branching fraction of the normalization mode, ${\mathcal B}(\Xi_{c}^{0}\to\Xi^{-}\pi^{+})$, we obtain the following absolute branching fraction results $(6.9 \pm 0.3 ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.5 ({\rm syst}) \pm 1.3 ({\rm norm})) \times 10^{-3}$, $(1.6 \pm 0.2 ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.2 ({\rm syst}) \pm 0.3 ({\rm norm})) \times 10^{-3}$, and $(1.2 \pm 0.3 ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.1 ({\rm syst}) \pm 0.2 ({\rm norm})) \times 10^{-3}$, for $\Xi_{c}^{0}$ decays to $\Xi^{0}\pi^{0}$, $\Xi^{0}\eta$, and $\Xi^{0}\eta^{\prime}$ final states, respectively. The third errors are from the uncertainty on ${\mathcal B}(\Xi_{c}^{0}\to\Xi^{-}\pi^{+})$.
