Joining to EU Croatia, based on the Directive 2009/28/EC on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources (ERS) was overtaken obligation to increase national usage of ERS by 2020 to 20% in gross consumption, and accordingly 2013 was adopted National action plan for ERS. Within the scope of that plan, Croatia financially supports construction of electric/heating power plants which use agro/forestry biomass, as one of principal and important ERSs. Annually in Croatia has been running several plants based on biomass, which generate ash material as an important by-product that has to be managed (used) properly. By the chemical properties ash from biomass is extremely alkaline (pH>12) and rich by phyto-nutrients (P, K, Ca, Mg) as well.
