Multidisciplinary collaboration is one of the hallmarks of gerontological education and led to the development of the current article. Using a case study approach based on the 2000 summer workshop, Getting Aging Public Policy into the Curriculum hosted by the Center for Policy Research at Syracuse University, the authors discuss some of the pedagogical implications for cooperative learning and collaboration among faculty teaching aging and public policy courses. Consistent with cooperative learning strategies, three modules have been developed on grandparents, public policy and the law; Social Security reform; and international aging policy and women. Each module includes class activities and flexible cooperative learning approaches to use in the development and implementation of courses that include aging and public policy content. Puberty is a time of intense reorganization of brain structure and a high-risk period for the onset of mental health problems, with variations in pubertal timing and tempo intensifying this risk. We conducted 2 systematic reviews of articles published up to February 1, 2024, focusing on 1) the role of brain structure in the relationship between puberty and mental health, and 2) precision psychiatry research evaluating the utility of puberty in making individualized predictions of mental health outcomes in young people. The first review provides inconsistent evidence about whether and how pubertal and psychopathological processes may interact in relation to brain development. While most studies found an association between early puberty and mental health difficulties in adolescents, evidence on whether brain structure mediates this relationship is mixed. The pituitary gland was found to be associated with mental health status during this time, possibly through its central role in regulating puberty and its function in the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axes. In the second review, the design of studies that have explored puberty in predictive models did not allow for a quantification of its predictive power. However, when puberty was evaluated through physically observable characteristics rather than hormonal measures, it was more commonly identified as a predictor of depression, anxiety, and suicidality in adolescence. Introduction: More than 1 in 10 people are thought to experience a mental health problem during adolescence, with most adult psychopathology beginning during this time. Experiences of stress or adversity during childhood are important risk factors for poorer mental health outcomes and are also associated with alterations in neurodevelopment. There is evidence to suggest that this relationship is mediated by inflammation and the immune system. The eBRAIN study (The Impact of Early Adversity on Trajectories of Brain Maturation and Mental Health in Young Adolescents) will assess how early life adversity might affect trajectories of brain development throughout adolescence, whether these neurobiological changes are associated with psychopathology, and if they can potentially be explained by an activation of the immune system., Methods: A cohort of 220 adolescents between the ages of 11-14 will be recruited into this study. Each participant will complete three study visits, each one year apart, at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, King's College London, London (UK). At each study visit, they will be assessed with structural and functional MRI scans, biological sample collection as well as questionnaires and interviews to collect demographic information, assess experiences of adversity, and details of psychopathology. The study will also collect information about factors such as diet and nutrition, physical exercise, and cognition., Ethics and Dissemination: Ethical approval for this study has been received by King's College London Research Ethics Committee (REC reference: HR-18/19-9033). Recent preliminary PHENIX data are consistent with a negative and sizable longitudinal double-spin asymmetry A(pi)(LL) for pi(0) production at moderate transverse momentum p( perpendicular ) approximately 1-4 GeV and central rapidity. By means of a systematic investigation of the relevant degrees of freedom, we show that the perturbative QCD framework at leading power in p( perpendicular ) produces at best a very small negative asymmetry in this kinematic range.

Bartonella henselae causes cat-scratch disease and bacillary angiomatosis peliosis. The bacteria reside in erythrocytes of asymptomatic cats, which represent the natural reservoir for this pathogen. B. henselae is usually grown on blood-enriched media. Growth experiments on Brucella medium without blood demonstrated that heme compounds are essential for the growth of B. henselae and can completely substitute the addition of blood components. The heme precursor protoporphyrin IX alone, or in combination with FeCl(2) or FeCl(3), as well as transferrin or lactoferrin did not support growth, indicating that B. henselae cannot synthesize heme itself. Hemin supported growth even when free iron was chelated, indicating that hemin is also used as an iron source. Binding assays showed that hemin starvation increased the binding capacity of B. henselae for hemin, providing evidence that the bacteria carry a specific hemin uptake system, which might be regulated by hemin.

Purpose: To evaluate the role of in vivo 1H MR spectroscopic determination of relaxation times and of fat and water content to differentiate between infiltration of multiple myeloma or osteoporosis in patients with roentgenologic unclear demineralization of the lumbar spine., Patients, Materials and Methods: Ten patients each with osteoporotic reduction of bone mineral density (BMD), histologically proven multiple myeloma who showed only diffuse tumor manifestations without tumor compression fractures in the spine, and volunteers were investigated. Osteoporosis was confirmed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) (Hologic QDR 2000 device, Siemens Medical Systems). The MR investigations were performed with a 1.5 T whole body system (Gyroscan S15/ACS II, Philips Medical Systems). Localized MR spectra from a cubic volume of about 8 cm3 were acquired by the PRESS technique. Chemical shift selective T1 relaxation times were obtained from an IR series, T2 was measured by variation of the interval between the first and the second echo in the volume selection scheme. Statistical analysis was done using the Kruskal-Wallis test and the Mann-Whitney test with the software SPSS., Results: There were highly significant differences in T2 values and fat content between patients with osteoporosis and multiple myeloma. T2 values were decreased in osteoporosis (37 ms and 59 ms vs. 44 ms and 70 ms in plasmocytoma) and fat content was decreased in multiple myeloma (20% vs 31% and 34% in volunteers and osteoporosis). Between volunteers and patients with osteoporosis the differences in the T2 of the fat component was significantly different., Conclusions: In our preliminary experience MRS is helpful in the differential diagnosis of bony demineralization. It enables a differentiation between osteoporosis and diffuse multiple myeloma. T2 value measurements may be helpful in the diagnostic trial of osteoporosis.

Relaxation times of water were measured in human vertebral bodies by a fat-suppressed dual-echo turbo spin echo/turbo inversion recovery MRI sequence. Comparison was made with T1 and T2 values obtained by localized 1H-MR spectroscopy. The accuracy of the results and the diagnostic potential of the fast quantitative MRI technique were evaluated in 20 volunteers, 11 patients with osteoporosis, 6 patients with lymphoma, and 6 patients with bone marrow metastasis. No significant alterations of T1 and T2 relaxation times of water and fat were found in osteoporosis. With both methods, an increase in the T1 values of the water resonance by 16% was observed in lymphomas, which was highly significant (P < .001) in the MRS measurements, and an elevation by the same amount was obtained by the MRI sequence for the metastases (P = .040). A strong reduction of fat fraction was quantified by MRS in the tumorous cases. T2 of the water resonance increased by more than 30% (P < .003) in metastases. Water T2 values obtained by the MRI sequence showed systematic deviations from the MRS results, especially at short echo spacings.
