Abstract

The manufacturing industry's work and performance metrics are of primary significance at the present scenario. To enhance such performance metric outputs, the implementation of lean manufacturing is playing the pivotal role and took the organizations towards excellence. Even though lean concepts have been effectively used in industries, which have led to improvement, they nevertheless have an influence on the environment in one way or another. In addition, due to several manufacturing industries' indiscriminate use of a variety of natural resources and energy, greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere, causing climate change and global warming. Here, the green manufacturing approach can play the important role in eliminating the environmental concerns associated with the manufacturing industries. Similar to lean manufacturing, industries have implemented green manufacturing practises in an effort to increase production capacity and reduce waste. As depicted from the literature, both the lean and green strategies have so far been used separately in order to examine the effects on organisational performance and, ultimately, manufacturing excellence. The focus of the current study is to explore the use of the Lean and Green Approach combined in manufacturing industry to achieve both the operational as well as environmental benefits to the organizations. Current literature on lean green approach has been explained to ascertain the benefits achieved from this approach. Similarities and dissimilarities between lean with green approaches has been explained. Case studies and surveys on lean and green approach have been explained in systematic manner. This will be useful for industrial managers and engineers, and academicians to know the benefits and significance of strategic implementation of lean and green approach.
