Abstract

This paper deals with the characterisation by means of electrochemical, gravimetric and analytical methods of chloride-induced-corrosion behaviour of steel coupons embedded in chloride-containing-cement pastes. Corrosion rates were estimated from electrochemical measurements as well as gravimetric ones. They vary from 2.6 to 5.7 µm/year for 5 and 10 g/L chloride-containing-cement pastes. Analytical characterisations (including optical and electronical microscopy and Raman micro-spectroscopy) showed that corrosion patterns are not depending on the chloride content of the cement paste (5 and 10 g/L chloride in the interstitial solution). A localised corrosion pattern composed of pits growing inside the metallic substratum, a corrosion products layer (CPL) and a transformed medium (TM) was pointed out. CPL can be divided into two sub-layers (CPL1 and CPL2), characterised by the presence or absence of calcium coming from the cement matrix. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

For reinforced concrete structures a localisation of all significant critical areas can only be done by a full surface inspection. The economic advantages are obvious: uncritical areas have not to be repaired expensively 1. The first step of the assessment should always be a visual inspection 2. The range of deterioration causes can be limited and the degree of deterioration may be estimated roughly. The inspection program can be adjusted to the requirements. By means of a full surface potential mapping areas with a high risk for chloride induced reinforcement corrosion can be localised, although no deteriorations are visually detectable at the concrete surface. In combination with concrete cover depth and resistivity measurements areas with corrosion promoting exposure conditions can be localised even if the reinforcement is not yet depassivated. The following publication gives an overview about the essential full surface investigation methods to localise critical areas regarding corrosion of steel in concrete. 61. Passive corrosion of steel in concrete in context of nuclear waste disposal.

Abstract

A large experimental campaign has been developed in order to study the passivity of steel embedded in mortar. Mortar samples, containing steel pill (initially polished or precorroded), have been placed in various conditions [relative humidities of 80, 90 and 95%; solution simulating the clay rock underground water of the French candidate site of Bure at two temperatures (25 and 50°C) and in aerated and anoxic conditions]. The passive corrosion behaviour of steel has been assessed after 6 months and after 1 year for each experiment. Gravimetric measurements (average corrosion rate evaluation), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy characterisations (identification of the passive film and corrosion product nature) as well as optical and electronic microscopy analyses (corrosion layer thickness and steel/mortar interface elementary analysis) have been performed. Such analyses have been also carried out after 15 days and 1 and 3 months in order to consider the first stages of passivity in mortars. The results show that average corrosion rates determinate for polished steels are typical of passive conditions (<1 μm/year) and vary from 0·4 to 5 μm/year for the precorroded pills. Moreover, iron is detected within the cementitious material, up to 5-50 μm from the metal, indicating the transport of iron species. Most of these materials have beneficial particle size distribution and/or chemical composition, leading to concrete with lower permeability and higher electrical resistivity. At the same time, their different chemistry leads to changes in pH values of pore solution and in concrete microstructure, which could consequently lead to the changes in corrosion properties of reinforcing steel, especially when concrete is exposed to long-term carbonation process. The aim of this paper is to research the difference in corrosion behaviour of steel in carbonated mortar based on different types of alternative binders. In the paper results on three mortar mixes are presented, all having different type of binder – reference mix with ordinary Portland cement, mix with high volume of fly ash and silica fume and mix with blast furnace slag cement with the addition of nanosilica. Mixes of binders were taken from the literature, in which they are studied as an alternative to the classical Portland cement, mainly due to their lower ecological footprint and beneficial properties. After curing reinforced mortar samples were carbonated at 3% CO2 to ensure representativeness with natural carbonation. During early ages and after carbonation changes of corrosion potential, corrosion rate and electrical impedance parameters are monitored. The first unit started operation in 1977 and in the early 1980's all four units were in use. During the last few years the aging management of the Nuclear Power Plant's (NPP) concrete structures has grown an important issue because the existing structures are reaching the end of their licensed operating lifetime (about 40 years). Therefore the nuclear power companies are developing aging management systems to avoid premature degradation of NPP facilities and to be able to extend their operating lifetime. This paper is about the development of a computerized ageing management system for the nuclear power plants concrete structures. The computerized ageing management system is built upon central database and implementation applications. It will assist the personnel of power companies to implement the aging management activities at different phases of the lifetime of a power plant.
