A joint measurement is presented of the branching fractions $B^0_s\to\mu^+\mu^-$ and $B^0\to\mu^+\mu^-$ in proton-proton collisions at the LHC by the CMS and LHCb experiments. The data samples were collected in 2011 at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, and in 2012 at 8 TeV. The combined analysis produces the first observation of the $B^0_s\to\mu^+\mu^-$ decay, with a statistical significance exceeding six standard deviations, and the best measurement of its branching fraction so far. Furthermore, evidence for the $B^0\to\mu^+\mu^-$ decay is obtained with a statistical significance of three standard deviations. The branching fraction measurements are statistically compatible with SM predictions and impose stringent constraints on several theories beyond the SM., Comment: Correspondence should be addressed to cms-and-lhcb-publication-committees@cern.ch

Quantum Physics - Abstract
In this paper we study the tunneling using a background independent (polymer) quantization scheme. We show that at low energies, for the tunneling through a single potential barrier, the polymer transmission coefficient and the polymer tunneling time converge to its quantum-mechanical counterparts in a clear fashion. As the energy approaches the maximum these polymer quantities abruptly decrease to zero. We use the transfer matrix method to study the tunneling through a series of identical potential barriers. We obtain that the transmission coefficients (polymer and quantum-mechanical) behave qualitatively in a similar manner, as expected. Finally we show that the polymer tunneling time exhibits anomalous peaks compared with the standard result. Numerical results are also presented.

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
We report the results of a multimessenger search for coincident signals from the LIGO and Virgo gravitational-wave observatories and the partially completed IceCube high-energy neutrino detector, including periods of joint operation between 2007-2010. These include parts of the 2005-2007 run and the 2009-2010 run for LIGO-Virgo, and IceCube's observation periods with 22, 59 and 79 strings. We find no significant coincident events, and use the search results to derive upper limits on the rate of joint sources for a range of source emission parameters. For the optimistic assumption of gravitational-wave emission energy of $10^{-2}$\,M$_\odot$c$^2$ at $\sim 150$\,Hz with $\sim 60$\,ms duration, and high-energy neutrino emission of $10^{51}$\,erg comparable to the isotropic gamma-ray energy of gamma-ray bursts, we limit the source rate below $1.6 \times 10^{-2}$\,Mpc$^{-3}$yr$^{-1}$. We also examine how combining information from gravitational waves and neutrinos will aid discovery in the advanced gravitational-wave detector era.

Using the Euler-Maruyama numerical method, we present calculations of the Ermakov-Lewis invariant and the dynamic, geometric, and total phases for several cases of stochastic parametric oscillators, including the simplest case of the stochastic harmonic oscillator. The results are compared with the corresponding numerical noiseless cases to evaluate the effect of the noise. Besides, the noiseless cases are analytic and their analytic solutions are briefly presented. The Ermakov-Lewis invariant is not affected by the multiplicative noise in the three particular examples presented in this work, whereas there is a shift effect in the case of the phases, Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, 22 references

In this paper we report on a search for short-duration gravitational wave bursts in the frequency range 64 Hz-1792 Hz associated with gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), using data from GEO600 and one of the LIGO or Virgo detectors. We introduce the method of a linear search grid to analyse GRB events with large sky localisation uncertainties such as the localisations provided by the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM). Coherent searches for gravitational waves (GWs) can be computationally intensive when the GRB sky position is not well-localised, due to the corrections required for the difference in arrival time between detectors. Using a linear search grid we are able to reduce the computational cost of the analysis by a factor of O(10) for GBM events. Furthermore, we demonstrate that our analysis pipeline can improve upon the sky localisation of GRBs detected by the GBM, if a high-frequency GW signal is observed in coincidence. We use the linear search grid method in a search for GWs associated with 129 GRBs observed satellite-based gamma-ray experiments between 2006 and 2011. The GRBs in our sample had not been previously analysed for GW counterparts. A fraction of our GRB events are analysed using data from GEO600 while the detector was using squeezed-light states to improve its sensitivity; this is the first search for GWs using data from a squeezed-light interferometric observatory. We find no evidence for GW signals, either with any individual GRB in this sample or with the population as a whole. For each GRB we place lower bounds on the distance to the progenitor, assuming a fixed GW emission energy of $10^{-2} M_{\odot}c^{2}$, with a median exclusion distance of 0.8 Mpc for emission at 500 Hz and 0.3 Mpc at 1 kHz. The reduced computational cost associated with a linear search grid will enable rapid searches for GWs associated with Fermi GBM events in the Advanced detector era., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures, 1 table. Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena ,General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology - Abstract
We present the results of a search for gravitational waves associated with 223 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) detected by the InterPlanetary Network (IPN) in 2005-2010 during LIGO's fifth and sixth science runs and Virgo's first, second and third science runs. The IPN satellites provide accurate times of the bursts and sky localizations that vary significantly from degree scale to hundreds of square degrees. We search for both a well-modeled binary coalescence signal, the favored progenitor model for short GRBs, and for generic, unmodeled gravitational wave bursts. Both searches use the event time and sky localization to improve the gravitational-wave search sensitivity as compared to corresponding all-time, all-sky searches. We find no evidence of a gravitational-wave signal associated with any of the IPN GRBs in the sample, nor do we find evidence for a population of weak gravitational-wave signals associated with the GRBs. For all IPN-detected GRBs, for which a sufficient duration of quality gravitational-wave data is available, we place lower bounds on the distance to the source in accordance with an optimistic assumption of gravitational-wave emission energy of $10^{-2}M_{\odot}c^2$ at 150 Hz, and find a median of 13 Mpc. For the 27 short-hard GRBs we place 90% confidence exclusion distances to two source models: a binary neutron star coalescence, with a median distance of 12Mpc, or the coalescence of a neutron star and black hole, with a median distance of 22 Mpc. Finally, we combine this search with previously published results to provide a population statement for GRB searches in first-generation LIGO and Virgo gravitational-wave detectors, and a resulting examination of prospects for the advanced gravitational-wave detectors., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables; for the science summary, see http://www.ligo.org/science/Publication-IPNS56VSR123grb/index.php

Quantum Physics - Abstract
We demonstrate a client-server quantum key distribution (QKD) scheme, with large resources such as laser and detectors situated at the server-side, which is accessible via telecom-fibre, to a client requiring only an on-chip polarisation rotator, that may be integrated into a handheld device. The detrimental effects of unstable fibre birefringence are overcome by employing the reference frame independent QKD protocol for polarisation qubits in polarisation maintaining fibre, where standard QKD protocols fail, as we show for comparison. This opens the way for quantum enhanced secure communications between companies and members of the general public equipped with handheld mobile devices, via telecom-fibre tethering., Comment: Comments welcome

Astrophysics - Earth and Planetary Astrophysics - Abstract
We present the detection of five planets -- Kepler-62b, c, d, e, and f -- of size 1.31, 0.54, 1.95, 1.61 and 1.41 Earth radii, orbiting a K2V star at periods of 5.7, 12.4, 18.2, 122.4 and 267.3 days, respectively. The outermost planets (Kepler-62e & -62f) are super-Earth-size (1.25 < planet radius/earth radius < 2.0) planets in the habitable zone (HZ) of their host star, receiving 1.2 +- 0.2 and 0.41 +- 0.05 times the solar flux at Earth's orbit. Theoretical models of Kepler-62e and -62f for a stellar age of ~7 Gyr suggest that both planets could be solid: either with a rocky composition or composed of mostly solid water in their bulk., Comment: Published online 18 April 2013 in Science Express

We review some techniques from non-linear analysis in order to investigate critical paths for the action functional in the calculus of variations applied to physics. Previous attempts to analyse when these are minima ex- ist, but mainly based on physical reasoning and only for a restricted class of models. Our main intention in this regard is to develop precise mathematical conditions for critical paths to be minimum solutions in a variety of situations. Our claim is that, with a few techniques, a systematic analysis (including the domain for which critical points are genuine minima) of non-trivial models is possible. We present specific models arising in modern physical theories in order to make clear the ideas here exposed., Comment: Corrected version (minor typos and added acknowledgements). Physics - Physics and Society ,Computer Science - Social and Information Networks - Abstract
The social network maintained by a focal individual, or ego, is intrinsically dynamic and typically exhibits some turnover in membership over time as personal circumstances change. However, the consequences of such changes on the distribution of an ego's network ties are not well understood. Here we use a unique 18-month data set that combines mobile phone calls and survey data to track changes in the ego networks and communication patterns of students making the transition from school to university or work. Our analysis reveals that individuals display a distinctive and robust social signature, captured by how interactions are distributed across different alters. Notably, for a given ego, these social signatures tend to persist over time, despite considerable turnover in the identity of alters in the ego network. Thus as new network members are added, some old network members are either replaced or receive fewer calls, preserving the overall distribution of calls across network members. This is likely to reflect the consequences of finite resources such as the time available for communication, the cognitive and emotional effort required to sustain close relationships, and the ability to make emotional investments., Comment: Revised version, SI Appendix added

- Abstract

- Abstract

- Abstract

It is an effective tool for diagnosing and treating respiratory diseases, and it has the advantage that it does not require forced respiratory maneuvers. IOS reference values are required for each population group. Objective: This study aimed to determine the IOS reference values and bronchodilator response in healthy preschool children living in Bogotá, Colombia. Methods: We performed a cross-sectional study in preschool children who had no history of respiratory disease; 96 children fit the parameters for testing to determine normal values according to the American Thoracic Society and European Respiratory Society criteria. Results: Values for respiratory resistance (Rrs) and reactance (Xrs) at 5, 10, and 20 Hz, respiratory impedance (Zrs, and resonance frequency (Fres) were established. Height was the most influential independent variable for IOS values; an increase in height led to a reduction in Rrs5 and Rrs20 and an increase in Xrs5. After the administration of 400 mcg of salbutamol the values for Rrs5(−17.48%), Rrs20(−8.63%), Fres (−10.68%), and area of reactance (−35.44%) were reduced, meanwhile Xrs5 (15.35%) was increased. Conclusions: Normal IOS values before and after the administration of 400 mcg of salbutamol were determined for a population of children aged 3–5 years at 2,640 m. Reference IOS equations for these children are presented. A relative change of up to −28% and 36% after the use of salbutamol for respiratory resistance and reactance, respectively, should be considered as an upper limit of the normal range, and possible appropriate cut-off values for defining significant response for evaluating therapeutic interventions. Keywords: oscillometry, children, reference values, high altitude, respiratory function tests, cross-sectional studies

We study the statistical properties of the SIR epidemics in heterogeneous networks, when an epidemic is defined as only those SIR propagations that reach or exceed a minimum size s_c. Using percolation theory to calculate the average fractional size
of an epidemic, we find that the strength of the spanning link percolation cluster $P_{\infty}$ is an upper bound to . For small values of s_c, $P_{\infty}$ is no longer a good approximation, and the average fractional size has to be computed directly. The value of s_c for which $P_{\infty}$ is a good approximation is found to depend on the transmissibility T of the SIR. We also study Q, the probability that an SIR propagation reaches the epidemic mass s_c, and find that it is well characterized by percolation theory. We apply our results to real networks (DIMES and Tracerouter) to measure the consequences of the choice s_c on predictions of average outcome sizes of computer failure epidemics., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures - Published

We study the effects of relaxational dynamics on congestion pressure in scale free networks by analyzing the properties of the corresponding gradient networks (Z. Toroczkai, K. E. Bassler, Nature {\bf 428}, 716 (2004)). Using the Family model (F. Family, J. Phys. A, {\bf 19}, L441 (1986)) from surface-growth physics as single-step load-balancing dynamics, we show that the congestion pressure considerably drops on scale-free networks when compared with the same dynamics on random graphs. This is due to a structural transition of the corresponding gradient network clusters, which self-organize such as to reduce the congestion pressure. This reduction is enhanced when lowering the value of the connectivity exponent $\lambda$ towards 2., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

We review results on the scaling of the optimal path length in random networks with weighted links or nodes. In strong disorder we find that the length of the optimal path increases dramatically compared to the known small world result for the minimum distance. For Erd\H{o}s-R\'enyi (ER) and scale free networks (SF), with parameter $\lambda$ ($\lambda >3$), we find that the small-world nature is destroyed. We also find numerically that for weak disorder the length of the optimal path scales logaritmically with the size of the networks studied. We also review the transition between the strong and weak disorder regimes in the scaling properties of the length of the optimal path for ER and SF networks and for a general distribution of weights, and suggest that for any distribution of weigths, the distribution of optimal path lengths has a universal form which is controlled by the scaling parameter $Z=\ell_{\infty}/A$ where $A$ plays the role of the disorder strength, and $\ell_{\infty}$ is the length of the optimal path in strong disorder. The relation for $A$ is derived analytically and supported by numerical simulations. We then study the minimum spanning tree (MST) and show that it is composed of percolation clusters, which we regard as "super-nodes", connected by a scale-free tree. We furthermore show that the MST can be partitioned into two distinct components. One component the {\it superhighways}, for which the nodes with high centrality dominate, corresponds to the largest cluster at the percolation threshold which is a subset of the MST. In the other component, {\it roads}, low centrality nodes dominate. We demonstrate the significance identifying the superhighways by showing that one can improve significantly the global transport by improving a very small fraction of the network., Comment: review, accepted at IJBC

Physics - Medical Physics - Abstract
A breast neoplasia is often marked by the presence of microcalcifications and massive lesions in the mammogram: hence the need for tools able to recognize such lesions at an early stage. Our collaboration, among italian physicists and radiologists, has built a large distributed database of digitized mammographic images and has developed a Computer Aided Detection (CADe) system for the automatic analysis of mammographic images and installed it in some Italian hospitals by a GRID connection. Regarding microcalcifications, in our CADe digital mammogram is divided into wide windows which are processed by a convolution filter; after a self-organizing map analyzes each window and produces 8 principal components which are used as input of a neural network (FFNN) able to classify the windows matched to a threshold. Regarding massive lesions we select all important maximum intensity position and define the ROI radius. From each ROI found we extract the parameters which are used as input in a FFNN to distinguish between pathological and non-pathological ROI. We present here a test of our CADe system, used as a second reader and a comparison with another (commercial) CADe system., Comment: 4 pages, Proceedings of the 4th International Symposium on Nuclear and Related Techniques 2003, Vol. unico, pp. d10/1-d10/4 Havana, Cuba

It was shown in hep-th/0301099 that the leading UV/IR mixing effects in noncommutative gauge theories on D-branes are able to capture information about the closed string spectrum of the parent string theory. The analysis was carried out for D-branes on nonsupersymmetric C^3/Z_N orbifolds of Type IIB. In this paper we consider D-branes on twisted circles compactifications of Type II string theory. We find that the signs of the leading UV/IR mixing effects know about the mass gap between the lowest modes in NSNS and RR closed string towers. Moreover, the relevant piece of the field theory effective action can be reproduced purely in the language of closed strings. Remarkably this approach unifies in a single structure, that of a closed string exchange between D-branes, both the leading planar and nonplanar effects associated to the absence of supersymmetry., Comment: 28 pages, 4 figures, LaTex; v2 references added, misprints corrected

We study one-loop corrections in scalar and gauge field theories on the non-commutative torus. For rational theta, Morita equivalence allows these theories to be reformulated in terms of ordinary theories on a commutative torus with twisted boundary conditions. UV/IR mixing does not lead to singularities, however there can be large corrections. In particular, gauge theories show tachyonic instabilities for some of the modes. We discuss their relevance to spontaneous Z_N x Z_N symmetry breaking in the Morita dual SU(N) theory due to electric flux condensation., Comment: 30 pages

High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
String or M-theory in the background of Kerr-AdS black holes is thought to be dual to the large n limit of certain conformal field theories on a rotating sphere at finite temperature. The five dimensional black hole is associated to N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on a rotating three-sphere and the four dimensional one to the superconformal field theory of coinciding M2 branes on a rotating two-sphere. The thermodynamic potentials can be expanded in inverse powers of the radius of the sphere. We compute the leading and subleading terms of this expansion in the field theory at one loop and compare them to the corresponding supergravity expressions. The ratios between these terms at weak and strong coupling turns out not to depend on the rotation parameters in the case of N=4 SYM. For the field theory living on one M2 brane we find a subleading logarithmic term. No such term arises from the supergravity calculation., Comment: 14 pages (harvmac b-mode), signs corrected, minor changes otherwise

High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
According to the AdS/CFT correspondence, the strong coupling limit of large n, N=4 supersymmetric gauge theory at finite temperature is described by asymptotically anti de Sitter black holes. These black holes exist with planar, spherical and hyperbolic horizon geometries. We concentrate on the hyperbolic and spherical cases and probe the associated gauge theories with D3-branes and Wilson loops. The D3-brane probe reproduces the coupling of the scalars in the gauge theory to the background geometry and we find thermal stabilization in the hyperbolic case. We investigate the vacuum expectation value of Wilson loops with particular emphasis on the screening length at finite temperature. We find that the thermal phase transition of the theory on the sphere is not related to screening phenomena., Comment: 18 pages (harvmac b-mode), 6 figures; v2: comment on D-brane probe potential and conformal anomaly added, minor changes otherwise, references added

The knowledge of resistance mechanisms in Pseudomonas strains is an important issue for an adequate antimicrobial treatment. Therefore, the objective was to investigate other antimicrobial resistance mechanisms in MDR P. aeruginosa strains carrying blaIMP, make a partial plasmids characterization, and determine if modifications in oprD gene affect the expression of the OprD protein. Methodology: Susceptibility testing was performed by Kirby Baüer and by Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (presence/absence of efflux pump inhibitor); molecular typing by Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), resistance genotyping and integrons by PCR and sequencing; OprD expression by Western blot; plasmid characterization by MOB Typing Technique, molecular size by PFGE-S1; and blaIMP location by Southern blot. Results: Among the 59 studied P. aeruginosa isolates, 41 multidrug resistance and carbapenems resistance isolates were detected and classified in 38 different PFGE patterns. Thirteen strains carried blaIMP; 16 blaGES and four carried both genes. This study centered on the 17 strains harboring blaIMP. New variants of β-lactamases were identified (blaGES-32, blaIMP-56, blaIMP-62) inside of new arrangements of class 1 integrons. The presence of blaIMP gene was detected in two plasmids in the same strain. The participation of the OprD protein and efflux pumps in the resistance to carbapenems and quinolones is shown. No expression of the porin OprD due to stop codon or IS in the gene was found. Conclusions: This study shows the participation of different resistance mechanisms, which are reflected in the levels of MIC to carbapenems. This is the first report of the presence of three new variants of β-lactamases inside of new arrangements of class 1 integrons, as well as the presence of two plasmids carrying blaIMP in the same P. aeruginosa strain isolated in a Mexican hospital. High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
We obtain N=1 SU(N)^k gauge theories with bifundamental matter and a quartic superpotential as the low energy theory on D3-branes at singular points. These theories generalize that on D3-branes at a conifold point, studied recently by Klebanov and Witten. For k=3 the defining equation of the singular point is that of an isolated D_4 singularity. For k>3 we obtain a family of multimodular singularities. The considered SU(N)^k theories flow in the infrared to a non-trivial fixed point. High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
Using a six-orientifold, fourbranes and four fivebranes in type IIA string theory we construct $\mathcal{N}$=1 supersymmetric gauge theories in four dimensions with product group $SU(M)\times SO(N)$ or $SU(M)\times Sp(2N)$, a bifundamental flavor and quarks. We obtain the Seiberg dual for these theories and rederive it via branes. To obtain the complete dual group via branes we have to add semi-infinite fourbranes. We propose that the theory derived from branes has a meson deformation switched on. This deformation implies higgsing in the dual theory. The addition of the semi-infinite fourbranes compensates this effect., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, Latex; v3:extended explanations supporting our hypothesis added

High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
Global geometry of $K3$-fibration Calabi-Yau threefolds, with Hodge number $h_{2,1}=r+1$, is used to define $N=4$ softly broken $SU(r+1)$ gauge theories, with the bare coupling constant given by the dual heterotic dilaton, and the mass of the adjoint hypermultiplet given by the heterotic string tension. The $U(r+1)$ Donagi-Witten integrable model is also derived from the $K3$-fibration structure, with the extra $U(1)$ associated to the heterotic dilaton. The case of $SU(2)$ gauge group is analyzed in detail. String physics beyond the heterotic point particle limit is partially described by the $N=4$ softly broken theory., Comment: 27 pages, Latex, no figures. Misprints corrected

In these notes evidence is presented for intepreting the moduli space of the integrable model associated to $N\!=\!2$ gauge theories with $N\!=\!4$ matter content, in terms of Calabi-Yau manifolds. We restrict to the case of gauge group $SU(2)$, which is compared with the moduli space of the Calabi-Yau manifold $WP_{11226}^{12}$ appearing in the rank three dual pair $(K^{3}\times T^{2} / WP_{11226}^{12})$. The singularity loci of both spaces are maped in a one to one way and, in the weak coupling limit, $N\!=\!2$ $SU(2)$ pure Yang-Mills is obtained in both cases by the same type of blow up. Comments on the interpretation of the strong coupling locus from the perspective of the integrable system are done., Comment: 43 pages, Latex, lecture notes based on a talk of C. The action of the $S$-duality $Sl(2,Z)$ group on the moduli of the Calabi-Yau manifold $W\IP^{12}_{11226}$ appearing in the rank two dual pair $(K^{3}\times T^{2}/W\IP^{12}_{11226})$ is defined by interpreting the $N\!=\!4$ to $N\!=\!2$ flow, for $SU(2)$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills, in terms of the Calabi-Yau moduli. The different singularity loci are mapped in a one to one way, and the ($N\!=\!2$ limit/point particle limit) is obtained in both cases by the same type of blow up. Moreover, it is shown that the $S$-duality group permutes the different singularity loci of the moduli of $W\IP^{12}_{11226}$. High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
For $N\!=\!2$ SUSY theories with non-vanishing $\beta$-function and one-dimensional quantum moduli, we study the representation on the special coordinates of the group of motions on the quantum moduli defined by $\Gamma_W\!=\!Sl(2;Z)\!/\!\Gamma_M$, with $\Gamma_M$ the quantum monodromy group. $\Gamma_W$ contains both the global symmetries and the strong-weak coupling duality. The action of $\Gamma_W$ on the special coordinates is not part of the symplectic group $Sl(2;Z)$. After coupling to gravity, namely in the context of non-rigid special geometry, we can define the action of $\Gamma_W$ as part of $Sp(4;Z)$. To do this requires singular gauge transformations on the "scalar" component of the graviphoton field. In terms of these singular gauge transformations the topological obstruction to strong-weak duality can be interpreted as a $\sigma$-model anomaly, indicating the possible dynamical role of the dilaton field in $S$-duality., Comment: 13 pages, Latex, misprints corrected

We derive the $t{\bar t}$-equations for generic $N\!=\!2$ topological field theories as consistency conditions for the contact term algebra of topological strings. A generalization of the holomorphic anomaly equation, known for the critical ${\hat c}\!=\!3$ case, to arbitrary non critical topological strings is presented. The interplay between the non trivial cohomology of the $b$-antighost, gravitational descendants and $\bar t$-dependence is discussed. The physical picture emerging from this study is that the $\bar t$ (background) dependence of topological strings with non trivial cohomology for the $b$-antighost, is determined by gravitational descendants., Comment: Latex, 20 pages, no figures
