International audience; On ocean basaltic volcanoes, magma transfer to the surface proceeds by subvertical ascent from the mantle lithosphere through the oceanic crust and the volcanic edifice, possibly followed by lateral propagation along rift zones. We use a 19-year-long database of volcano-tectonic seismic events together with detailed mapping of the cinder cones and eruptive fissures to determine the geometry and the dynamics of the magma paths intersecting the edifice of Piton de la Fournaise volcano. We show that the overall plumbing system, from about 30 km depth to the surface, is composed of two structural levels that feed distinct types of rift zones. The deep plumbing system is rooted between Piton des Neiges and Piton de la Fournaise volcanoes and has a N30–40 orientation. Above 20 km below sea level (bsl), the main axis switches to a N120 orientation, which permits magma transfer from the lithospheric mantle to the base of the oceanic crust, below the summit of Piton de la Fournaise. The related NW-SE rift zone is 15 km wide, linear, spotted by small to large pyroclastic cones and related lava flows and emits slightly alkaline magmas resulting from high-pressure fractionation of clinopyroxene ± olivine. This rift zone has low magma production rate of ~ 0.5–3.6 × 10 −3 m 3 s −1 and an eruption periodicity of around 200 years over the last 30 ka. Seismic data suggest that the long-lasting activity of this rift zone result from regional NNE-SSW extension, which reactivates inherited lithospheric faults by the effect of underplating and/or thermal erosion of the mantle lithosphere. The shallow plumbing system (b11 km bsl) connects the base of the crust with the Central Cone. It is separated from the deep plumbing system by a relatively large aseismic zone between 8 and 11 km bsl, which may represent a deep storage level of magma. The shallow plumbing system feeds frequent, short-lived summit and flank (NE and SE flanks) eruptions along summit and outer rift zones, respectively. Summit rift zones are very active (~0.1–0.25 m 3 s −1), short (2–3 km), and present an orthogonal pattern confined to the central active cone of Piton de la Fournaise. Outer NE and SE rift zones are much less active (~4–7.3 × 10 −3 m 3 s −1) and extend from inside the Enclos Fouqué caldera to bound the mobile eastern volcano flank. We show that the outer rift zones are almost aseismic and are genetically linked to the seaward flank displacements, whose most recent events where detected in 2004 and 2007. East flank sliding is itself triggered by shallow (b 2 km depth) sill intrusions. We propose that the subvertical magma intrusions along the perpendicular summit rift zones, sill intrusions, and subsequent magma injections along the outer rift zones are controlled by cycles of stress permutations. We thus tentatively propose that as for Piton de la Fournaise, the regional stress field acting on Etna and Hawaiian volcanoes is an important parameter in the control of the magma transfer along their deep plumbing system whereas the dynamics of their summit system is governed by shallow stress variations (above 5–10 km bsl) due to edifice deformation and magma transfers.

El Estribo Volcanic Complex (EVC) is located in the northern part of the Michoacán–Guanajuato Volcanic Field within the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt (TMVB). El Estribo is located at the southern edge of the E-W Pátzcuaro fault that belongs to the Pátzcuaro-Jarácuaro graben, a western extension of the E-W Morelia–Acambay fault system. Stratigraphy, geochronology, chemistry, and mineral assemblages suggest that the volcanic complex was constructed in two periods separated by a ~ 100 ka volcanic hiatus: a) emission of lava flows that constructed a shield volcano between 126 ka, and b) mixed phreatomagmatic to Strombolian activity that formed a cinder cone ~ 28 ka. The magmas that fed these monogenetic volcanoes were able to use the same feeding system. The cinder cone itself was constructed by Strombolian fallouts and remobilized scoria beds, followed by an erosion period, and by a mixed phreatomagmatic to magmatic phase (Strombolian fallouts ending with lava flows). Soft-sedimentary deformation of beds and impact sags, cross-bedding, as well as pitting and hydrothermal cracks found in particles support the phreatomagmatic phase. The erupted magmas through time ejected basaltic andesitic lava flows (56.21–58.88% SiO2) that built the shield volcano and then basaltic andesitic scoria (57.65–59.05% SiO2) that constructed the cinder cone. Although they used the same feeding system, the geochemical data and the mineral chemistry of the magmas indicate that the shield volcano and the cinder cone were fed by different magma batches erupted thousands of years apart. Therefore, the location of El Estribo Volcanic Complex along an E-W fault that has generated two sector collapses of the shield volcano to the north may be directly linked to this complex redistribution of the magmatic paths to the surface. Our findings show that magmatic feeding systems within monogenetic volcanic fields could be long lived, questioning the classic view of the monogenetic nature of their volcanoes and yielding information about the potential volcanic risk of these settings, usually considered risk-free. Forecasting volcanic activity relies fundamentally on tracking magma pressure through the use of proxies, such as ground surface deformation and earthquake rates. Lava lakes at open-vent basaltic volcanoes provide a window into the uppermost magma system for gauging reservoir pressure changes more directly. At Kīlauea Volcano (Hawai‘i, USA) the surface height of the summit lava lake in Halema‘uma‘u Crater fluctuates with surface deformation over short (hours to days) and long (weeks to months) time scales. This correlation implies that the lake behaves as a simple piezometer of the subsurface magma reservoir. Changes in lava level and summit deformation scale with (and shortly precede) changes in eruption rate from Kīlauea’s East Rift Zone, indicating that summit lava level can be used for short-term forecasting of rift zone activity and associated hazards at Kīlauea.

Gede Volcano, West Java (Indonesia), is located 60 km south of Jakarta within one of the regions with highest population density in the world. Therefore, knowledge of its eruption history is necessary for hazard evaluation, because even a small eruption would have major societal and economic consequences. Here we report the results of the investigation of the stratigraphy of Gede (with the focus on its volcaniclastic deposits of Holocene age) and include 23 new radiocarbon dates. We have found that a major part of the volcanic edifice was formed in the Pleistocene when effusions of lavas of high-silica basalt dominated. During this period the volcano experienced large-scale lateral gravitational failure followed by complete reconstruction of the edifice, formation of the summit subsidence caldera and its partial refilling. After a repose period of > 30,000 years the volcanic activity resumed at the Pleistocene/Holocene boundary. In the Holocene the eruptions were dominantly explosive with magma compositions ranging from basaltic andesite to rhyodacite; many deposits show heterogeneity at the macroscopic hand specimen scale and also in the minerals, which indicates interactions between mafic (basaltic andesite) and silicic (rhyodacite) magmas. Significant eruptions of the volcano were relatively rare and of moderate violence (the highest VEI was 3–4; the largest volume of erupted pyroclasts 0.15 km3). There were 4 major Holocene eruptive episodes ca. 10,000, 4000, 1200, and 1000 yr BP. The volcanic plumes of these eruptions were not buoyant and most of the erupted products were transported in the form of highly concentrated valley-channelized pyroclastic flows. Voluminous lahars were common in the periods between the eruptions. The recent eruptive period of the volcano started approximately 800 years ago. It is characterized by frequent and weak VEI 1–2 explosive eruptions of Vulcanian type and rare small-volume extrusions of viscous lava. We estimate that during last 10,000 years, Gede erupted less than 0.3 km3 DRE (Dense Rock Equivalent) of magma. Such small productivity suggests that the likelihood of future large-volume (VEI ≥ 5) eruptions of the volcano is low, although moderately strong (VEI 3–4) explosive eruptions capable of depositing pyroclastic flows and lahars onto the NE foot of the volcano are more likely.

Two hundred years ago this year, Mount Tambora erupted on Sumbawa, a remote island in the south of Indonesia. It is the biggest recorded volcanic eruption in history. The eruption began on 5 April 1815 and reached its climax five days later. A series of smaller steam-driven eruptions continued for the next three years as magma heated ground and surface water. Today scientists are using robots and UAVs to unlock the secrets of volcanoes.

After about 5000 years of dormancy, the Hokkaido-Komagatake volcano started its historical eruptive stage with a plinian eruption in AD 1640. During this eruption, a zoned magma chamber was formed with upper mafic and lower silicic layers. This study focuses on the temporal evolution and eruption processes of the magma chamber based on petrological investigations of subsequent eruptions in AD 1694, 1856, 1929 and 1942. In all the eruptive products the majority of the clasts are strongly porphyritic white pumice (silicic andesite), which was derived from the silicic end-member magma. These are associated with small amounts of mafic ejecta (mafic to intermediate andesite). Based on density calculations for the magmas, the layered structure of the zoned magma chamber is likely to have been stable throughout the historical eruptive stage. In each eruption since AD 1694, relatively mafic magma erupted initially followed by more silicic magma. In addition, although there is petrological evidence for a mafic magma injection into a resident silicic magma chamber prior to the AD 1640 eruption, all eruptions from AD 1694 onwards appear to have taken place without new mafic injections. This suggests that since the AD 1694 eruption magmas have been erupted sequentially from the upper mafic part of the magma chamber. The composition of scoria, the most mafic ejecta, changed from relatively mafic magma in the AD 1694 eruption to gray pumice in later eruptions, which represent a hybrid magma. This temporal change is interpreted to indicate that mafic magma mixed gradually with more silicic magmas during repeated eruptions. In addition, the volume of the mafic and hybrid magmas decreased because of repeated eruptions without new mafic magma injections, so that the AD 1942 eruption was dominated by the eruption of silicic magma. We consider the present chamber to be filled with highly porphyritic, viscous silicic magma.

In June–July 2001 a series of 16 discrete lava fountain paroxysms occurred at the Southeast summit crater (SEC) of Mount Etna, preceding a 28-day long violent flank eruption. Each paroxysm was preceded by lava effusion, growing seismic tremor and a crescendo of Strombolian explosive activity culminating into powerful lava fountaining up to 500 m in height. During 8 of these 16 events we could measure the chemical composition of the magmatic gas phase (H2O, CO2, SO2, HCl, HF and CO), using open-path Fourier transform infrared (OP-FTIR) spectrometry at ∼1–2 km distance from SEC and absorption spectra of the radiation emitted by hot lava fragments. We show that each fountaining episode was characterized by increasingly CO2-rich gas release, with CO2/SO2 and CO2/HCl ratios peaking in coincidence with maxima in seismic tremor and fountain height, whilst the SO2/HCl ratio showed a weak inverse relationship with respect to eruption intensity. Moreover, peak values in both CO2/SO2 ratio and seismic tremor amplitude for each paroxysm were found to increase linearly in proportion with the repose interval (2–6 days) between lava fountains. These observations, together with a model of volatile degassing at Etna, support the following driving process. Prior to and during the June–July 2001 lava fountain sequence, the shallow (∼2 km) magma reservoir feeding SEC received an increasing influx of deeply derived carbon dioxide, likely promoted by the deep ascent of volatile-rich primitive basalt that produced the subsequent flank eruption. This CO2-rich gas supply led to gas accumulation and overpressure in SEC reservoir, generating a bubble foam layer whose periodical collapse powered the successive fountaining events. The anti-correlation between SO2/HCl and eruption intensity is best explained by enhanced syn-eruptive degassing of chlorine from finer particles produced during more intense magma fragmentation.

In the absence of any direct observations of an active submarine eruption at a mid-ocean ridge (MOR), our understanding of volcanic processes there is based on the interpretation of eruptive products. Submarine lava flow morphology serves as a primary indicator of eruption and emplacement processes; however, there is typically a lack of visual observations and bathymetric data at a scale and extent relevant to submarine lava flows, which display meter to submeter-scale morphological variability. In this paper, we merge submersible-based visual observations with high-resolution multibeam bathymetry collected by an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) and examine the fine-scale geomorphology of Ninos, a submarine lava flow field at the Galapagos Spreading Center (GSC).We identify separate morphological facies (i.e., morphofacies) within the lava flow field, each having distinct patterns of lava flow morphology and volcanic structures. The spatial and stratigraphic arrangement of morphofacies suggests that they were emplaced sequentially as the eruption progressed, implying that the Ninos eruption consisted of at least three eruptive phases. We estimate eruption parameters and develop a chronological model that describes the construction of the Ninos lava flow field. An initial phase with high effusion rates emplaced sheet flows, then an intermediate phase emplaced a platform of lobate lavas, and then an extended final phase with low effusion rates emplaced a discontinuous row of pillow lava domes. We then compare this model to mapped lava flow fields at other MORs. Despite disparities in scale, the morphological similarities of volcanic features at MORs with different spreading rates suggest common emplacement processes that are primarily controlled by local magma supply.

The pattern of eruptions at long-lived volcanic centers provides a window into the co-evolution of crustal magma transport, tectonic stresses, and unsteady magma generation at depth. Mount Mazama in the Oregon Cascades has seen variable activity over the last 400 ky, including the 50 km3 climactic eruption at ca. 7.7 ka that produced Crater Lake caldera. The physical mechanisms responsible for the assembly of silicic magma reservoirs that are the precursors to caldera-forming eruptions are poorly understood. Here we argue that the spatial and temporal distribution of geographically clustered volcanic vents near Mazama reflects the development of a centralized magma chamber that fed the climactic eruption. Time-averaged eruption rates at Mount Mazama imply an order of magnitude increase in deep magma influx prior to the caldera-forming event, suggesting that unsteady mantle melting triggered a chamber growth episode that culminated in caldera formation. We model magma chamber–dike interactions over ∼50 ky preceding the climactic eruption to fit the observed distribution of surface eruptive vents in space and time, as well as petrologically estimated deep influx rates. Best fitting models predict an expanding zone of dike capture caused by a growing, oblate spheroidal magma chamber with 10–30 MPa of overpressure. This growing zone of chamber influence causes closest approaching regional mafic vent locations as well as more compositionally evolved Mazama eruptions to migrate away from the climactic eruptive center, returning as observed to the center after the chamber drains during the caldera-forming eruption.

The 2012–2013 flank eruption of Tolbachik volcano (Kamchatka) lasted 9 months and produced 0.54 km3 of basaltic trachyandesite lava, thus becoming one of the most voluminous historical lava effusions of basic composition in subduction-related environments globally. From March to July 2013, the volcano monotonously erupted lava of constant composition (SiO2 = 52 wt%) with a nearly stable effusion rate of 18 m3/s. Despite the uniform eruptive and emplacement conditions, the dominant style of lava propagation throughout that time gradually changed from ‘a’a to pahoehoe. We report results of instrumental field measurements of the ‘a’a and pahoehoe flow dynamics (documented with time-lapse cameras) as well as the lava viscosity determined by flow rate and shear stress (using penetrometer) methods. Maximal propagation velocities of the ‘a’a fronts ranged from 2 to 25 mm/s, and those of the pahoehoe from 0.5 to 6 mm/s. The flow front velocities of both lava types experienced short-period fluctuations that were caused by complex flow mechanics of the advancing flow lobes. Minimal viscosities of lava of the ‘a’a lobes ranged from 1.3 × 105 to 3.3 × 107 Pa s (flow rate method), and those of the pahoehoe from to 5 × 103 to 5 × 104 Pa s (shear stress method). Our data include the first ever measured profiles of viscosity through the entire thickness of actively advancing pahoehoe lava lobes. We have found that both the ‘a’a and pahoehoe flows were fed by identical parental lava, which then developed contrasting rheological properties, owing to differences in the process of lava transport over the ground surface. The observed transition from the dominant ‘a’a to the dominant pahoehoe propagation styles occurred due to gradual elongation and branching of the lava tube system throughout the course of the eruption. Such evolution became possible because the growing lava field, composed of semisolidified flows, provided an environment for shallow subsurface intrusions and internal migrations of lava that, with time, developed into branches of the lava tube system. Based on our data, we propose phenomenological models of the ‘a’a and pahoehoe flow mechanics.

The 2014–2015 Holuhraun eruption was the largest fissure eruption in Iceland in the last 200 years. This flood basalt eruption produced ~ 1.6 km3 of lava, forming a lava flow field covering an area of ~ 84 km2. Over the 6-month course of the eruption, ~ 11 Mt of SO2 were released from the eruptive vents as well as from the cooling lava flow field. This work examines the post-eruption SO2 flux emitted by the Holuhraun lava flow field, providing the first study of the extent and relative importance of the outgassing of a lava flow field after emplacement. We use data from a scanning differential optical absorption spectroscopy (DOAS) instrument installed at the eruption site to monitor the flux of SO2. In this study, we propose a new method to estimate the SO2 emissions from the lava flow field, based on the characteristic shape of the scanned column density distribution of a homogenous source close to the ground. Over the last 5000 years, at least 53 eruptive episodes have occurred at Mt. Taranaki (western North Island, New Zealand), from either its summit crater (~ 2500 m) or a satellite vent on Fanthams Peak (~ 1900 m). The magmas erupted have a wide range of compositions from basaltic to trachy-andesitic (~ 48–60 wt% SiO2). Five large-magnitude episodes from this sequence were studied so as to characterize a typical range of explosive eruption styles at andesitic stratovolcanoes, including three eruptions from the summit crater and two from Fanthams Peak. Sustained eruption columns characterized the climactic phase of all five eruptions, but these were interspersed with pulsating, collapsing, or oscillating conditions. Eruption columns reached between 14 to 29 km in height and ejected minimum volumes of 0.1–1.1 km3 at mass discharge rates of 1 × 107–2 × 108 kg/s, indicating magnitudes of 4.1 to 5.1. The simplest eruptions occurred from Fanthams Peak with basaltic magmas producing high-climactic eruption columns rapidly after vent opening, followed by gentle waning phases or a passage into a lava-fountaining phase. Eruptions of higher-silica magmas at the summit vent, by contrast, showed longer pre-climactic eruptive phases with either dome growth or complex phases of vent clearance and blockage producing unsteady eruption columns. The latter eruption types produced block-and-ash flows, lateral-blast surges, and column-collapse pumice-and-ash flows, with run-out distances of 3–19 km, covering 5–70 km2 with volumes of up to 0.022 km3. Our results demonstrate that very different eruption scenarios may occur at different vent locations, or with subtly different compositions erupted, on the same stratovolcano so that emergency management planning must take such a range of possibilities into account.

The 1914 Taisho eruption of Sakurijima volcano was Japan’s highest intensity and magnitude eruption of the twentieth century. After a 35-year period of quiescence, the volcano suddenly rewoke a few days before the eruption, when earthquakes began to be felt on Sakurajima Island. The eruption began on January 12, 1914, from two fissures located on opposite sides of the volcano, and was characterized by a complex time evolution and changes in eruptive styles. The eruption began with a subPlinian explosive phase in which two convective columns rose from the two fissures. Both plumes were sustained for at least 2 days. This resulted in deposition of a widely dispersed tephra sequence. After this phase, the eruption evolved to a final, waning phase, shifting toward effusive activity that lasted until April 1914. During the first weeks, effusive activity was also accompanied by ash emission. The complex sequence of events, characterized by contemporaneous explosive and effusive activity, is typical of several recently observed mid-intensity eruptions, such as during the 2011 eruption of Cordon Caulle, Chile. The stratigraphic sequence of the eruptive deposits from the Taisho eruption comprises alternating coarse-to-fine lapilli beds with ash beds dispersed toward the ESE and SE. These deposits can be subdivided into three lapilli-bearing units (Units T1, T2 and T3, which correspond to the subPlinian phase) and one ash-bearing unit (Unit T4, which corresponds to the final ash venting, accompanying the first day/weeks of lava flow activity). Grain size analyses from each unit reveal a marked polymodal distribution generally described by the sum of two or three Gaussian subpopulations. Both the modes and the relative amounts of the coarse subpopulations vary with distance from vent, with those of the fine subpopulation remaining nearly constant. Within the vertical sequence, component analysis shows a progressive increase in lithic fragments, suggesting that conduit enlargement continued until the final stages of the eruption. The estimated volume of the tephra deposit of the subPlinian phase of the eruption is 0.33 ± 0.11 km3 (dense rock equivalent (DRE) volume = 0.09 ± 0.03 km3). The height of the eruption column was also assessed by using four different isopleth maps compiled based on different strategies for the characterization of the largest clasts. The maximum height attained by the eruption column is estimated at 15.0 ± 1.2 km above the vent, resulting in a maximum mass discharge rate of 3.6 ± 1.2 × 107 kg s−1 (calculated taking into account the strong effect of wind advection). Finally, different classification schemes were applied to classify the eruption, which generally straddles the fields between Plinian and subPlinian.

The 312ka Fasnia eruption from the Las Cañadas Caldera on Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain, produced a complex sequence of twenty-two intercalated units, including 7 pumice fall, 7 ignimbrite and 8 ash surge and fall deposits that define two distinct eruption sequences (Lower and Upper Fasnia sequences). The fallout units themselves are internally complex, reflecting waxing and waning of the eruption column, while many of the ignimbrites reflect multiple intra-plinian partial column collapse events associated with the injection of lithic clasts into the eruption column. The Lower and Upper Fasnia eruption phases were each terminated by caldera collapse and complete column collapse events. Probable blockage of the conduit and vent system during Lower Fasnia caldera collapse event briefly terminated the eruption, resulting in a short-lived period of erosion and sedimentation prior to the onset of the Upper Fasnia phase. The transition to the Upper Fasnia eruption phase coincided with the eruption of more geochemically homogeneous pyroclasts. In total, 62km3 of tephra were erupted, including 49km3 of juvenile clasts and >12km3 of lithic clasts. The DRE volume of magma erupted was 13km3 (Lower Fasnia>5km3, Upper Fasnia>8km3), two thirds of which (~9-10km3) was deposited purely by fallout. Structural-geological, petrological, seismotectonic, and seismotomographic data received in regions of areal volcanism of the south-southwest sector of the Plosky Tolbachik volcano area are considered. The fissure eruption occurring here from November 2012 to the middle of September 2013 was called 50 years of IVS after the 50th anniversary of the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, Far Eastern Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences. A joint analysis of new and retrospective data allows us to suggest a model for the recent eruption and formulate some problems for future studies and eruption forecasting.

The effusion rate is the most important parameter to gather when a volcanic eruption occurs, because it controls the way in which a lava body grows, extends and expands, influencing its dimensional properties. Calculation of lava flow volume from thermal images collected by helicopter surveys has been largely used during the last decade for monitoring subaerial effusive eruptions. However, due to the depths where volcanic activity occurs, monitoring submarine volcanic eruptions is a very difficult task. The 2011–2012 submarine volcanic eruption at El Hierro, Canary Islands, has provided a unique and excellent opportunity to monitor eruptive processes occurring on the seabed. The use of a hand-held thermal camera during daily helicopter flights allowed us to estimate for the first time the daily and total erupted magma volumes from a submarine eruption. The volume of magma emitted during this eruption has been estimated at 300 Mm3, giving an average effusion rate of ~ 25 m3 s− 1. Thermal imagery by helicopter proved to be a fast, inexpensive, safe and reliable technique of monitoring volcanic eruptions when they occur on the shallow seabed.

Monogenetic basaltic volcanism is characterised by a complex array of eruptive behaviours, reflecting spatial and temporal variability of the magmatic properties (e.g. composition, eruptive volume, magma flux) as well as environmental factors at the vent site (e.g. availability of water, country rock geology, faulting). These combine to produce changes in eruption style over brief periods (minutes to days) in many eruption episodes. Monogenetic eruptions in some volcanic fields often start with a phreatomagmatic vent-opening phase that later transforms into “dry” magmatic explosive or effusive activity, with a strong variation in the duration and importance of this first phase. Such an eruption sequence pattern occurred in 83% of the known eruption in the 0.25 My-old Auckland Volcanic Field (AVF), New Zealand. In this investigation, the eruptive volumes were compared with the sequences of eruption styles preserved in the pyroclastic record at each volcano of the AVF, as well as environmental influencing factors, such as distribution and thickness of water-saturated semi- to unconsolidated sediments, topographic position, distances from known fault lines. The AVF showed that there is no correlation between ejecta ring volumes and environmental influencing factors that is valid for the entire AVF. In contrary, using a set of comparisons of single volcanoes with well-known and documented sequences, resultant eruption sequences could be explained by predominant patterns of the environment in which these volcanoes were erupted. Based on the spatial variability of these environmental factors, a first-order susceptibility hazard map was constructed for the AVF that forecasts areas of largest likelihood for phreatomagmatic eruptions by overlaying topographical and shallow geological information. Combining detailed phase-by-phase breakdowns of eruptive volumes and the event sequences of the AVF, along with the new susceptibility map, more realistic eruption scenarios can be developed for different parts of the volcanic field. This approach can be applied to tailoring field and sub-field specific hazard forecasting at similar volcanic fields worldwide.

The 2005–2006 eruption at ∼9°50′N, East Pacific Rise provides an exceptional opportunity to investigate the magma plumbing system beneath a well-studied ridge system. The eruption was preceded by two years of increasingly intense seismicity and occurred from the same location as a previous and well-characterized eruption in 1991–1992. Here we use the crystal cargo of samples from this eruption to investigate magma reservoir processes in the lead-up to the eruption, as well as their temporal relationship to the seismicity that preceded it. Compositional zoning in some plagioclase crystals indicates primitive melt replenishment occurred roughly six weeks or less before the eruption. This replenishing event is seen only in the crystals from the central region of the eruption (9°50′–9°52′N). This is also the area where the most primitive lava compositions are observed and together these observations support models of replenishment being spatially focused. The short time between the input of a more primitive melt and eruption onto the seafloor suggests replenishment likely contributed to triggering the eruption. Rare resorbed plagioclase crystals, and glomerocrysts of plagioclase and olivine, some of which have rims far from equilibrium with their host melt, suggest that disaggregation of a crystal mush occurred within a few days prior to eruption. Interstitial melt from within this mush zone must have been mixed back into the erupted lava—a form of in situ crystallization. Thus, the erupted magmas evolved in a replenished-tapped magma reservoir in which at least a part of the crystallization occurred in situ .

The Tongariro Te Maari crater, New Zealand, erupted for the first time in over 80 years on August 6, 2012. Because it occurred at night, the short-lived eruption prevented direct visual observations, hence presenting some challenges for understanding the complex eruptive sequence and reach of the various explosions. Using 1 Hz Global Positioning System (GPS) data from the local volcano monitoring network, we computed the GPS LC phase residuals and SNR data at the time of the eruption and show that several processes successively affected the signal at the closest GPS station. Firstly, the signal from one of the satellites shows two successive drops of SNR caused by the presence of two distinct dense ash-laden plumes near the vent, produced successively by the second and last of the main eruption pulses. Secondly, we show that a gas-charged debris avalanche and a lateral blast successively entrained hot and/or humid air over 3 km away from the vent, atop the VGKR GPS station. While the limited amount of data prevents fully quantitative analyses and estimates of temperature or humidity in the lateral air flow, our results document the first recorded detection of a small-scale lateral plume by GPS technology. They highlight the potential of GPS data analysis for improving our understanding of eruptive sequences when visual observations are limited.

The geological record contains evidence of volcanic eruptions that were as much as two orders of magnitude larger than the most voluminous eruption experienced by modern civilizations, the A.D. 1815 Tambora (Indonesia) eruption. Perhaps nowhere on Earth are deposits of such supereruptions more prominent than in the Snake River Plain–Yellowstone Plateau (SRP-YP) volcanic province (northwest United States). While magmatic activity at Yellowstone is still ongoing, the Heise volcanic field in eastern Idaho represents the youngest complete caldera cycle in the SRP-YP, and thus is particularly instructive for current and future volcanic activity at Yellowstone. The Heise caldera cycle culminated 4.5 Ma ago in the eruption of the ∼1800 km3 Kilgore Tuff. Accessory zircons in the Kilgore Tuff display significant intercrystalline and intracrystalline oxygen isotopic heterogeneity, and the vast majority are 18O depleted. This suggests that zircons crystallized from isotopically distinct magma batches that were generated by remelting of subcaldera silicic rocks previously altered by low-δ18O meteoric-hydrothermal fluids. Prior to eruption these magma batches were assembled and homogenized into a single voluminous reservoir. U-Pb geochronology of isotopically diverse zircons using chemical abrasion–isotope dilution–thermal ionization mass spectrometry yielded indistinguishable crystallization ages with a weighted mean 206Pb/238U date of 4.4876 ± 0.0023 Ma (MSWD = 1.5; n = 24). These zircon crystallization ages are also indistinguishable from the sanidine 40Ar/39Ar dates, and thus zircons crystallized close to eruption. This requires that shallow crustal melting, assembly of isolated batches into a supervolcanic magma reservoir, homogenization, and eruption occurred extremely rapidly, within the resolution of our geochronology (103–104 yr). The crystal-scale image of the reservoir configuration, with several isolated magma batches, is very similar to the reservoir configurations inferred from seismic data at active supervolcanoes. The connection of magma batches vertically distributed over several kilometers in the upper crust would cause a substantial increase of buoyancy overpressure, providing an eruption trigger mechanism that is the direct consequence of the reservoir assembly process.

Long-distance lateral magma transport away from volcanic centers in island arcs is emerging as a common phenomenon where the regional stress regime is favorable. It should also be recognized as an important factor in the construction and growth of island arcs, and a potential trigger for devastating eruptions. In this contribution, we report on recent investigations into the magma dynamics of Izu-Oshima volcano, an active basaltic volcano with an extensive fissure system. Izu-Oshima is flanked by numerous, subparallel NW–SE trending submarine ridges extending up to 22 km to the NW and the SE from the central vent. During a recent submersible survey we have identified that these ridges are fissures which erupted basaltic spatter and lava flows. Furthermore, lavas are petrographically similar along each ridge, while there are noticeable differences between ridges. The subparallel ridges are observed to transect a series of seamounts – the Izu-Tobu monogenetic volcanoes – which are dispersed across this area of the rear-arc. However, there are consistent petrographic and chemical differences between these seamounts and the ridges, indicating that they have different magma sources, yet, they are essentially bounding each other in dive tracks. The most appropriate scenario for their development is one where the Izu-Tobu Volcanoes are fed by an “in-situ” underlying source, while the NW–SE ridges are fed by lateral magma transport from Izu-Oshima. Magma erupted from each ridge is of a consistent geochemistry along its length, but has experienced crystal fractionation and some plagioclase accumulation. Compositions of the ridges are also very similar to lavas from the subaerial cones that can be traced down the flanks of Izu-Oshima. This implies that pairs of subaerial cones and submarine ridges represent the locus of magma transport events away from the storage system beneath Izu-Oshima. Hence, magma from this crustal reservoir moved upward to feed the on-edifice cones, as well as laterally to supply submarine fissures and dykes to a distance of 22 km.

We present GEOFIM (GEOphysical Forward/Inverse Modeling), a WebGIS application for integrated interpretation of multiparametric geophysical observations. It has been developed to jointly interpret scalar and vector magnetic data, gravity data, as well as geodetic data, from GPS, tiltmeter, strainmeter and InSAR observations, recorded in active volcanic areas. GEOFIM gathers a library of analytical solutions, which provides an estimate of the geophysical signals due to perturbations in the thermal and stress state of the volcano. The integrated geophysical modeling can be performed by a simple trial and errors forward modeling or by an inversion procedure based on NSGA-II algorithm. The software capability was tested on the multiparametric data set recorded during the 2008-2009 Etna flank eruption onset. The results encourage to exploit this approach to develop a near-real-time warning system for a quantitative model-based assessment of geophysical observations in areas where different parameters are routinely monitored.

Most of the magma erupted at mid-ocean ridges is stored in a mid-crustal melt lens that lies at the boundary between sheeted dikes and gabbros. Nevertheless, images of the magma pathways linking this melt lens to the overlying eruption site have remained elusive. Here, we have used seismic methods to image the thickest magma reservoir observed beneath any spreading center to date, which is principally attributed to the juxtaposition of the Juan de Fuca Ridge with the Cobb hotspot (northwestern USA). Our results reveal a complex melt body, which is ∼14 km long, 3 km wide, and up to 1 km thick, beneath the summit caldera. The estimated volume of the reservoir is 18–30 km3, more than two orders of magnitude greater than the erupted magma volumes of either the A.D. 1998 or 2011 eruption. SUMMARY We use shear wave splitting (SWS) above microearthquakes to monitor stress variations before the 2010 March and April flank and summit eruptions of Eyjafjallaj¨ okull volcano in Iceland. SWS time delays before Eyjafjallaj¨ okull show characteristic variations similar to those seen before earthquakes. The time delays display a nearly linear increase before the eruption, an abrupt change of slope and a rapid nearly linear decrease until the flank eruption begins. Similar variations before earthquakes are interpreted as stress-accumulation increases, and stress-relaxation decreases as microcracks coalesce onto the eventual fault plane. The changes in SWS before Eyjafjallaj¨ okull are interpreted as a similar stress-accumulation increase, as magma penetrates the crust, and stress-relaxation decrease as microcracks coalesce onto the magma conduit prior to magma release. We suggest that the remarkable similarity between stress changes before eruption and earthquake is strong evidence for the New Geophysics of a critically microcracked crust.

Explosive eruptions at basaltic volcanoes have been linked to gas segregation from magmas at shallow depths in the crust. The composition of primary melts formed at greater depths was thought to have little influence on eruptive style. Ocean island basaltic volcanoes are the product of melting of a geochemically heterogeneous mantle plume and are expected to give rise to heterogeneous primary melts. This range in primary melt composition, particularly with respect to the volatile components, will profoundly influence magma buoyancy, storage and eruption style. Here we analyse the geochemistry of a suite of melt inclusions from 25 historical eruptions at the ocean island volcano of Kīlauea, Hawai‘i, over the past 600 years. We find that more explosive styles of eruption at Kīlauea Volcano are associated statistically with more geochemically enriched primary melts that have higher volatile concentrations. These enriched melts ascend faster and retain their primary nature, undergoing little interaction with the magma reservoir at the volcano’s summit. We conclude that the eruption style and magma-supply rate at Kīlauea are fundamentally linked to the geochemistry of the primary melts formed deep below the volcano. Magmas might therefore be predisposed towards explosivity right at the point of formation in their mantle source region. The explosive style of volcanic eruptions has been linked to gas separation from magmas in the shallow crust. Geochemical analysis of magmas erupted over the past 600 years at Kīlauea Volcano, Hawai‘i, now reveal a link between eruption style and the geochemistry of magmas formed at greater depths, implying that some magmas are predisposed towards explosivity.

Mt. Etna is an active basaltic volcano where both flank and summit eruptions take place. In recent decades, the South-East summit crater (SEC) has in particular been characterized by ‘episodic’ eruptions, consisting of recurrent lava fountains associated with lava flow emissions and lasting from a few weeks to months. Recent volcanic activity shows that, if there is a transition from an episodic summit eruption to a flank eruption, then this usually takes place while the last paroxysm of the episodic eruption is still underway. By contrast, the 2007–08 episodic eruption at SEC was followed by the 2008–09 flank activity which started three days after the conclusion of the last paroxysm, coinciding with the strong earthquake (M = 7.9) in Sichuan (China), whose perturbations were recorded by the monitoring network of Mt. Etna. We therefore investigated the transition from a summit episodic eruption at SEC to flank activity utilizing a petrologic study of the products erupted from 2007 to 2009, integrated with literature data. The compositional variability of the products may largely be explained by a mixing between an evolved magma stored in the SEC reservoir and a more primitive magma which intrudes it. In the studied period, the most significant episodes of magma recharge occurred before the onset of the 2007–08 episodic eruption and during the 2008–09 flank activity, more precisely before June 2008. According to previous studies, the seven paroxysms of the 2007–08 episodic eruption at SEC have been interpreted as resulting from the disruption of a foam layer at the top of the SEC reservoir which was rebuilt before each subsequent episode. The transition from the 2007–08 episodic eruption at SEC to the 2008–09 flank activity was essentially triggered by the Sichuan earthquake which caused a variation of dynamic stress. It caused the volatile exolution, the pressurization of SEC stored magma, and the consequent fracturing of the surrounding rocks where magma intruded to then be erupted during the 2008–09 flank activity.

A review of the experience gained in the use of tiltmeters on Mt. Etna, Stromboli and Vulcano during the last 30 years is reported here. Tilt data represent a fundamental contribution towards understanding volcanic processes such as dike intrusions, fracture propagation, lava fountains and volume changes in magmatic or hydrothermal systems causing a deflation/inflation of the edifice. Intrusive processes preceding lateral eruptions show large variations (up to over 100 microradians), while minor variations (not exceeding 2.5 microradians) are linked to lava fountains that form ash plumes and lead to fallout deposits that cause severe hazards to aviation. High precision tilt also allows detecting the slight ground deformation linked to strombolian activity (0.01–0.2 microradians) as well as co-seismic variations (0.1–1.5 microradians) and tidal effects (0.1–0.2 microradians) that may have a role in the evolution of a volcanic system. Time–amplitude tilt ranges linked to each process are generally different allowing to discriminate, in real time, between a signal associated to one process and another one. This fact is important in terms of early warning particularly during the first phases of dikes propagation that precede a lateral eruption by hours–days.

Volcanology Real-time monitoring of volcanic eruptions involving caldera-forming events are rare (see the Perspective by Sigmundsson). Anderson et al. used several types of geophysical observations to track the caldera-forming collapse at the top of Kīlauea Volcano, Hawai'i, during the 2018 eruption. Gansecki et al. used near–real-time lava composition analysis to determine when magma shifted from highly viscous, slow-moving lava to low-viscosity, fast-moving lava. Patrick et al. used a range of geophysical tools to connect processes at the summit to lava rates coming out of far-away fissures. The 2011 eruption of a 20-km-high volcanic plume from Grimsvotn Volcano, Iceland, led to the closure of northern European airspace. Geodetic measurements from the volcano reveal a correlation between plume height, surface deformation and magma-chamber pressure, with a delay of an hour, implying that volcanic-plume behaviour can be predicted before eruption onset.

On 11 February 2010, a partial dome collapse, the largest since 20 May 2006, occurred at Soufriere Hills Volcano (SHV), Montserrat. The collapse is also the largest generated on the northern flank of SHV since the eruption began in 1995. Approximately 50×10 6 m 3 was removed from the dome, resulting in widespread pyroclastic density currents (PDCs). Mapping revealed a complex stratigraphy that varied widely across the northern and NE flanks, and reflected the complex evolution of the collapse. The deposits included a range of fine-grained ash-rich and pumice-rich units deposited by dilute PDCs, and several types of coarse-grained, blocky deposits from dense PDCs. Several previously unaffected areas, including Bugby Hole, Farm River Valley, the village of Harris and Trants, suffered significant damage to the natural and built environments. The collapse lasted 107 min but the bulk of the activity occurred in a 15 min period that included five of the six peaks in PDC generation and two Vulcanian explosions. Although powerful, the PDCs generated were not associated with a lateral blast. The likely cause was the piecemeal collapse of a series of large, unstable lobes that had been extruded on the northern flank of the pre-existing dome.

When subjected to the dynamic load, the behavior of the structures is complex and makes it difficult to describe the process of the deformation. In the paper, an analytical model is presented to analyze the plastic deformation of the steel circular tubes. The aim of the research is to calculate the deflection and the deformation angle of the tubes. A series of assumptions are made to achieve the objective. During the research, we build a mathematical model for simply supported thin-walled metal tubes with finite length. At a specified distance above the tube, a TNT charge explodes and generates a plastic shock wave. The wave can be seen as uniformly distributed over the upper semicircle of the cross-section. The simplified Tresca yield domain can be used to describe the plastic flow of the circular tube. The yield domain together with the plastic flow law and other assumptions can finally lead to the solving of the deflection. In the end, tubes with different dimensions subjected to blast wave induced by the TNT charge are observed in experiments. Comparison shows that the numerical results agree well with experiment observations.

We present the first-ever quantitative analysis of pyroclast textures from subaqueous deposits of a Surtseyan emergent volcano. The volcano, Black Point, formed in Mono Lake's Pleistocene precursor, Lake Russell, at ~ 13,300 ± 500 BP, from an explosive basaltic eruption involving the interaction of shallow lake water (~ 105 m) with vesiculating magma. The bulk of the edifice comprises unconsolidated tephra and represents submerged stages of eruption. Thin summit deposits formed during a final phase of emergent eruption and produced a group of low tuff rings. Lapillus clasts (16 mm to 32 mm) and fine ash grains (4 Φ, 0.0625 mm) from the subaqueous deposits have textures that reveal a conduit history of bubble nucleation, growth, collapse, intense microlite crystallisation, and magma–water interaction. Lapilli vesicularity ranges broadly to high values (up to 89%), while vesicle number densities (5.4 × 102–4.8 × 104 vesicles per mm3) are comparable to those published for Strombolian and Plinian basaltic eruptions (> 1 × 104 vesicles per mm3). Vesicle size and volume distributions suggest continuous bubble nucleation, but the suite of data as a whole indicates that a late-stage nucleation event played a significant role in shaping the eruption. Ash grain morphology and surface features indicative of magma–water interactions attest to water's role in fragmentation. Overall the pyroclast textures are consistent with water modification of a rather intense basaltic eruption, which might have been of a violent Strombolian or Plinian style if the eruption had been “dry” and occurred subaerially.

[1] From 2003 to 2007, eruptive activity at Piton de la Fournaise was shown to follow cycles, comprising many summit/proximal eruptions and finishing by a distal eruption. GPS measurements evidenced striking asymmetric deformation between its western and eastern flanks. Horizontal displacements recorded during interdistal periods showed a characteristic amplitude at the top of the eastern flank. Displacements recorded at the base of the summit cone showed a bimodal distribution, with low amplitudes during interdistal periods and large ones during distal eruptions. To account for displacement asymmetry, characteristic amplitude, and large flank displacement, we modeled the volcanic edifice using a Drucker-Prager elastoplastic rheology. Friction angles of 15° and >30° were needed to model the displacements respectively during distal eruptions and interdistal periods; this change shows that strain weakening occurred during distal events. Large plastic displacement that occurred in the eastern flank during distal eruptions relaxed the horizontal elastic stress accumulated during interdistal periods; it triggered summit deflation, horizontal magma transfer, and distal flank eruption and reset the eruptive cycle. Our elastoplastic models also show that simple source geometries may induce large eastern flank displacements that would be explained by a complex geometry in a linear elastic edifice. Magma supply is often thought to control volcano's eruptive activity, with surface deformation reflecting changes in magma supply rate, the volcano's response being linear. Our results bring some evidences that on Piton de la Fournaise time-space discretization of magma transfer may be the result of the edifice's nonlinear response, rather than changes in magma supply.

This paper presents a series of experimental and numerical results on cylindrical shells subjected to external localised blast loads. The cylindrical shells are laterally loaded in the mid span using varying masses of plastic explosive (PE4) over a prescribed load diameter of 22.5 mm, 30 mm and 45 mm detonated at a stand-off distance of 13 mm. Another series of tests is also carried out at a load diameter of 30 mm and charge mass of 16 g but with varying stand-off distance. The specimen and explosive are mounted on a ballistic pendulum which is used to determine the impulsive load imparted onto the cylindrical shells. The resultant impulses produce failures ranging from large inelastic deformation of the cylindrical shell to tearing of the structure associated with large inelastic deformation. The results are compared with analytical solution developed by Wierzbicki and Hoo Fatt[1] and numerical simulations carried out in ANSYS/AutoDYN v12.1. While the analytical solutions underestimate the permanent midpoint deflection there are good correlations with the numerical simulations.

[1] Starting in July 2011, anomalous seismicity was observed at El Hierro Island, a young oceanic island volcano. On 12 October 2011, the process led to the beginning of a submarine NW-SE fissural eruption at ~15 km from the initial earthquake loci, indicative of significant lateral magma migration. Here we conduct a multifrequency, multisensor interferometric analysis of spaceborne radar images acquired using three different satellite systems (RADARSAT-2, ENVISAT, and COSMO-SkyMed (Constellation of Small Satellites for Mediterranean Basin Observation)). The data fully captures both the pre-eruptive and coeruptive phases. Elastic modeling of the ground deformation is employed to constrain the dynamics associated with the magmatic activity. This study represents the first geodetically constrained active magmatic plumbing system model for any of the Canary Islands volcanoes, and one of the few examples of submarine volcanic activity to date. Geodetic results reveal two spatially distinct shallow (crustal) magma reservoirs, a deeper central source (9.5 ± 4.0 km), and a shallower magma reservoir at the flank of the southern rift (4.5 ± 2.0 km). The deeper source was recharged, explaining the relatively long basaltic eruption, contributing to the observed island-wide uplift processes, and validating proposed active magma underplating. The shallowest source may be an incipient reservoir that facilitates fractional crystallization as observed at other Canary Islands. Data from this eruption supports a relationship between the depth of the shallow crustal magmatic systems and the long-term magma supply rate and oceanic lithospheric age. Such a relationship implies that a factor controlling the existence/depth of shallow (crustal) magmatic systems in oceanic island volcanoes is the lithosphere thermomechanical behavior.

The increasing accuracy of 3D velocity models developed recently for Mt. Etna has enabled their use today in routine earthquake locations. In this work, we tested the potential and performance of a global-search probabilistic earthquake lo- cation method (NonLinLoc) in a 3D velocity model, to improve earthquake locations for seismic surveillance. In addition, NonLinLoc hypocenter locations and those ob- tained by standard iterative-linear 3D locations, SimulPS-14, have also been com- pared. To this end, a dataset of 328 selected earthquakes, occurring during the 2002-2003 Etna flank eruption, and the recent highest resolution 3D velocity model, have been used. The results revealed that the differences in hypocentral coordinates between the two methods are typically of the same order or smaller than the spatial location uncertainty. To evaluate the consistency of results between the two 3D location algorithms, synthetic datasets with real source-receiver configuration are also considered. Furthermore, by using NonLinLoc we estimated the influence of the source-receiver geometry on the quality of hypocenter locations. If we vary the net- work geometry in a dense and well-distributed network like at Etna, reducing the number of stations (by 20% and 50%), it is significant that no large systematic hypo- central shifts of the relocated earthquakes are observed if they occur within the net- work. NonLinLoc is a fast and promising approach for automatic earthquake locations and surveillance purposes at Mt. Etna, because (1) it works well with a reduced num- ber of seismic pickings, which are usually available in the automatic locations; (2) it is not particularly sensitive to tolerable levels of random noise in arrival times; and (3) it produces full location uncertainty and resolution information with respect to standard iterative-linear 3D locations.

Temporal and spatial changes in volcano morphology and internal architecture can determine eruption style and location. However, the relationship between the external and internal characteristics of volcanoes and sub-volcanic intrusions is often difficult to observe at outcrop or interpret uniquely from geophysical and geodetic data. We use high-quality 2D seismic reflection data from the Ceduna Sub-basin, offshore southern Australia, to quantitatively analyse 56, pristinely-preserved, Eocene-age volcanogenic mounds, and a genetically-related network of sub-volcanic sills and laccoliths. Detailed seismic mapping has allowed the 3D geometry of each mound to be reconstructed and distinct seismic facies within them to be recognised. Forty-six continental, basaltic shield volcanoes have been identified that have average flank dips of 3 . Parallel seismic reflections within the shield volcanoes are interpreted to represent interbedded volcanic and clastic material, suggesting that a series of temporally separate eruptions emanated from a central vent. The shield volcanoes typically overlie the lateral tips of sills and we suggest that the intermittent eruption phases correspond to the incremental emplacement of discrete magma pulses within the laterally extensive sill-complex. Eight volcanogenic hydrothermal vents, which are also associated with the lateral tips of sills, were also recognised, and these appear to have formed from the seepage of intrusion-related hydrothermal fluids onto the seafloor via emplacement-induced fractures. This work highlights that deformation patterns preceding volcanic eruptions may (i) be offset from the eruption site; (ii) attributed to intrusions with complex morphologies; and/or (iii) reflect magma movement along pre-existing fracture systems. These complexities should therefore be considered in eruption forecasting models that link pre-eruption ground deformation to subterranean magma emplacement depth and volume. More generally, our study highlights the key role that seismic reflection data can play in understanding the geometry, distribution and evolution of ancient and modern volcanic systems.

In the last part of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century, Mt. Merapi in Central-Java Indonesia erupted about every 2–5 years. Most of the eruptions were low in explosivity, with VEI-3 or less. Eruptions usually involve the formation of a lava dome, either in the beginning or in the end of the eruptive episode. For the 2006 eruption, the precursory signal was first observed in the middle of the year 2005 with a decrease in EDM slope distances to points on the rim, an increase of seismicity and a possible increase of SO 2 emissions. Those early events marked the beginning of a more continuous period of inflation, which led to the eruption. In total, the pre-eruption displacement of the southern rim reached at least 2.4 m toward the measuring station in Kaliurang (KAL). From late April until June 2006, a lava dome grew on the summit with a volume that gradually increased until it reached about 4.1 million m 3 in 38 days. The total of erupted magma was about 5.3 million m 3 dense-rock-equivalent (DRE). The dome subsequently collapsed in three steps from June 4 to June 14, leaving an open scar on its southeast side. In this paper we detail the changes of dome morphology that were monitored by taking successive photographs from similar positions. The eruption in 2006 marked a significant change in summit morphology, from west-southwestward opening during the 20th century to the currently southeast orientation. Also, an Mw 6.4 earthquake occurred on 26 May, midway through the eruption, which adds interesting questions about the relationship of the eruption and the earthquake. EDM data from 2006 and previous eruptions show that the summit remains inflated after each eruption, i.e., no significant deflation occurs following eruptions. The lack of post-eruption deflation suggests that magma remains in the shallow parts of the edifice after the eruption. As a result, the complex of summit lava domes and their intrusive roots grow with time and Merapi's rim and summit become progressively more unstable and prone to collapse.

Despite dense cloud cover, satellite-borne commercial Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) enabled frequent monitoring of Merapi volcano's 2010 eruption. Near-real-time interpretation of images derived from the amplitude of the SAR signals and timely delivery of these interpretations to those responsible for warnings, allowed satellite remote sensing for the first time to play an equal role with in situ seismic, geodetic and gas monitoring in guiding life-saving decisions during a major volcanic crisis. Our remotely sensed data provide an observational chronology for the main phase of the 2010 eruption, which lasted 12 days (26 October–7 November, 2010). Unlike the prolonged low-rate and relatively low explosivity dome-forming and collapse eruptions of recent decades at Merapi, the eruption began with an explosive eruption that produced a new summit crater on 26 October and was accompanied by an ash column and pyroclastic flows that extended 8 km down the flanks. This initial explosive event was followed by smaller explosive eruptions on 29 October–1 November, then by a period of rapid dome growth on 1–4 November, which produced a summit lava dome with a volume of ~ 5 × 10 6 m 3 . A paroxysmal VEI 4 magmatic eruption (with ash column to 17 km altitude) destroyed this dome, greatly enlarged the new summit crater and produced extensive pyroclastic flows (to ~ 16 km radial distance in the Gendol drainage) and surges during the night of 4–5 November. The paroxysmal eruption was followed by a period of jetting of gas and tephra and by a second short period (12 h) of rapid dome growth on 6 November. The eruption ended with low-level ash and steam emissions that buried the 6 November dome with tephra and continued at low levels until seismicity decreased to background levels by about 23 November. Our near-real-time commercial SAR documented the explosive events on 26 October and 4–5 November and high rates of dome growth (> 25 m 3 s − 1 ). An event tree analysis for the previous 2006 Merapi eruption indicated that for lava dome extrusion rates > 1.2 m 3 s − 1 , the probability of a large (1872-scale) eruption was ~ 10%. Consequently, the order-of-magnitude greater rates in 2010, along with the explosive start of the eruption on 26 October, the large volume of lava accumulating at the summit by 4 November, and the rapid and large increases in seismic energy release, deformation and gas emissions were the basis for warnings of an unusually large eruption by the Indonesian Geological Agency's Center for Volcanology and Geologic Hazard Mitigation (CVGHM) and their Volcano Research and Technology Development Center (BPPTK) in Yogyakarta — warnings that saved thousands of lives.

Mount Shinmoe-dake, in the Kirishima volcanic group (in southern Kyushu, Japan), erupted in January 2011. The eruption style was initially phreatomagmatic, and then underwent a series of transitions from sub-plinian explosions to an extrusion of lava from the summit crater. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the cause of such changes in eruption styles, focusing on the conditions for the eruption to be non-explosive and for the lava effusion to cease. To examine the conditions in the conduit and magma chamber, a numerical code is devised, based on the one-dimensional steady flow model of Kozono and Koyaguchi (2010), who modeled a dome-forming eruption. We systematically search for a condition in which the magma would not be fragmented, but the initial volatile content in the magma chamber would remain constant and unchanged. We find that the high magma permeability and/or the high degree of lateral gas escape was needed for the eruption to be effusive, and we estimate the pressure decrement at the cessation of lava extrusion.

Seismic activity at Redoubt Volcano, Alaska, has been closely monitored since 1989 by a network of five to ten seismometers within 22 km of the volcano's summit. Major eruptions occurred in 1989–1990 and 2009 and were characterized by large volcanic explosions, episodes of lava dome growth and failure, pyroclastic flows, and lahars. Seismic features of the 1989–1990 eruption were 1) weak precursory tremor and a short, 23-hour-long, intense swarm of repetitive shallow long-period (LP) events centered 1.4 km below the crater floor, 2) shallow volcano-tectonic (VT) and hybrid earthquakes that separated early episodes of dome growth, 3) 13 additional swarms of LP events at shallow depths precursory to many of the 25 explosions that occurred over the more than 128 day duration of eruptive activity, and 4) a persistent cluster of VT earthquakes at 6 to 9 km depth. In contrast the 2009 eruption was preceded by a pronounced increase in deep-LP (DLP) events at lower crustal depths (25 to 38 km) that began in mid-December 2008, two months of discontinuous shallow volcanic tremor that started on January 23, 2009, a strong phreatic explosion on March 15, and a 58-hour-long swarm of repetitive shallow LP events. The 2009 eruption consisted of at least 23 major explosions between March 23 and April 5, again accompanied by shallow VT earthquakes, several episodes of shallow repetitive LP events and dome growth continuing until mid July. Increased VT earthquakes at 4 to 9 km depth began slowly in early April, possibly defining a mid-crustal magma source zone. Magmatic processes associated with the 2009 eruption seismically activated the same portions of the Redoubt magmatic system as the 1989–1990 eruption, although the time scales and intensity vary considerably among the two eruptions. The occurrence of precursory DLP events suggests that the 2009 eruption may have involved the rise of magma from lower crustal depths. Based on the evolution of seismicity during the 1989–1990 and 2009 eruptions the Redoubt magmatic system is envisioned to consist of a shallow system of cracks extending 1 to 2 km below the crater floor, a magma storage or source region at roughly 3 to 9 km depth, and a diffuse magma source region at 25 to 38 km depth. Close tracking of seismic activity allowed the Alaska Volcano Observatory to successfully issue warnings prior to many of the hazardous explosive events that occurred in 2009.

In March 2009, Redoubt Volcano, Alaska erupted for the first time since 1990. Explosions ejected plumes that disrupted international and domestic airspace, sent lahars more than 35 km down the Drift River to the coast, and resulted in tephra fall on communities over 100 km away. Geodetic data suggest that magma began to ascend slowly from deep in the crust and reached mid- to shallow-crustal levels as early as May, 2008. Heat flux at the volcano during the precursory phase melted ~ 4% of the Drift glacier atop Redoubt's summit. Petrologic data indicate the deeply sourced magma, low-silica andesite, temporarily arrested at 9–11 km and/or at 4–6 km depth, where it encountered and mixed with segregated stored high-silica andesite bodies. The two magma compositions mixed to form intermediate-silica andesite, and all three magma types erupted during the earliest 2009 events. Only intermediate- and high-silica andesites were produced throughout the explosive and effusive phases of the eruption. The explosive phase began with a phreatic explosion followed by a seismic swarm, which signaled the start of lava effusion on March 22, shortly prior to the first magmatic explosion early on March 23, 2009 (UTC). More than 19 explosions (or “Events”) were produced over 13 days from a single vent immediately south of the 1989–90 lava domes. During that period multiple small pyroclastic density currents flowed primarily to the north and into glacial ravines, three major lahars flooded the Drift River Terminal over 35 km down-river on the coast, tephra fall deposited on all aspects of the edifice and on several communities north and east of the volcano, and at least two, and possibly three lava domes were emplaced. Lightning accompanied almost all the explosions. A shift in the eruptive character took place following Event 9 on March 27 in terms of infrasound signal onsets, the character of repeating earthquakes, and the nature of tephra ejecta. More than nine additional explosions occurred in the next two days, followed by a hiatus in explosive activity between March 29 and April 4. During this hiatus effusion of a lava dome occurred, whose growth slowed on or around April 2. The final explosion pulverized the very poorly vesicular dome on April 4, and was immediately followed by the extrusion of the final dome that ceased growing by July 1, 2009, and reached 72 M m 3 in bulk volume. The dome remains as of this writing. Effusion of the final dome in the first month produced blocky intermediate- to high-silica andesite lava, which then expanded by means of lava injection beneath a fracturing and annealing, cooling surface crust. In the first week of May, a seismic swarm accompanied extrusion of an intermediate- to high-silica andesite from the apex of the dome that was highly vesicular and characterized by lower P 2 O 5 content. The dome remained stable throughout its growth period likely due to combined factors that include an emptied conduit system, steady degassing through coalesced vesicles in the effusing lava, and a large crater-pit created by the previous explosions. We estimate the total volume of erupted material from the 2009 eruption to be between ~ 80 M and 120 M m 3 dense-rock equivalent (DRE). The aim of this report is to synthesize the results from various datasets gathered both during the eruption and retrospectively, and which are represented by the papers in this publication. We therefore provide an overall view of the 2009 eruption and an introduction to this special issue publication.

A new volcanic distribution map of the 4.5 Ma–5000 B.P. continental intraplate Newer Volcanics Province in southeastern Australia has been produced in order to document >704 eruption points from >416 volcanic centres. Volcanic centres were classified as either simple or complex, with simple centres featuring few eruption points and simple morphologies, while complex centres have multiple eruption points and complex morphologies. Centres were further characterised according to the nature of their deposits. Simple volcanoes take the form of lava shields, scoria cones, maars, ash cones and domes, and unknown eruption types. Complex centres may feature exclusively magmatic eruption products such as lava and scoria, and are therefore classified as magmatic volcanic complexes; maar volcanic complexes feature exclusively phreatomagmatic eruption products and have erupted under the influence of external water, while maar–cone volcanic complexes feature both magmatic and phreatomagmatic eruption products. The 2011 eruption of Shinmoedake Volcano, part of Kirishima Volcanic Complex in southern Kyushu, southwestern Japan was characterized by a significant change in eruption style from subplinian eruptions to lava effusion in the summit crater, and subsequent vulcanian eruptions. The stratigraphy, distribution and textures of fallout tephra deposits reveal the character and sequence of the eruption. The tephra-fall deposits distributed southeast of the volcano are divided into five units based on the eruptive events. Unit 1 is a lithic-rich fine ash-fall deposited on 19 January 2011. Unit 2 is a very well to well sorted pumice-fall deposit from the evening of January 26 to early morning of January 27, and is the main product of the 2011 eruption. The unit-2 deposit was dispersed throughout an area extending more than 20 km SE of the source crater. Unit 3 comprises tephra-fall deposits related to the January 27 15 h 41 min explosion, and is subdivided into lower (3L) and upper (3U) parts. Unit 3L is a lithic-rich well-sorted coarse ash-fall, deposited during the initial stage of the January 27 15 h 41 min eruption, whereas the unit 3U is composed mainly of coarse-grained pumiceous lapilli. Unit 4 is a fine ash-fall deposited on January 28–29, and consists mostly of fresh lava fragments and crystal grains. Unit 5 is a product of the largest vulcanian eruption, on March 13. Unit-5 tephra is a lithic-rich medium to coarse ash-fall deposit. Furthermore, the 31 August 2011 ash-fall deposit extending 19 km southwest of the Shinmoedake crater is fine grained and contains abundant lava fragments. Temporal variations in grain size and components of the 2011 eruption deposits reveal the eruption sequence and the conditions of the crater, conduit and magma chamber.

Hekla is one of Iceland's most active volcanoes; its eruptions, characterized by surface fissuring and repeated lava flows during its post-glacial activity, have built up an 800 m high elongated mountain. Since 1970 it has erupted every ~ 10 years; the previous repose interval averaged ~ 60 years. For the last eruption in 2000 we constrain the magma geometry by using a wide variety of deformation data: campaign GPS; an InSAR interferogram; dry tilt data, and borehole strain data. The dike that causes surface fissuring extends no more than ~ 0.5 km in depth, and the reservoir depth is ~ 10 km. These are connected by a conduit of small lateral extent. Data for previous eruptions are consistent with this model. We propose that the marked change in eruption interval is because this conduit remains liquid during the short interval between recent eruptions; only a small pressure increase is required to rupture the thin crustal seal. Such a state is consistent with precursory seismicity being confined to very shallow depths and may be applicable to other volcanoes that undergo abrupt changes in eruption interval.

[1] El Hierro eruption started on 10 October 2011 after an unrest episode that initiated on 17 July 2011. This is the first eruption in the Canary Islands that has been tracked in real time. Although being submarine and not directly observable, the data recorded allowed its reconstruction and to identify its causes and mechanisms. Seismicity, surface deformation, and petrological data indicate that a batch of basanitic magma coming from a reservoir located at a depth of about 25 km below the El Hierro Island was emplaced at shallower depth creating a new reservoir about 10–12 km above, where magma evolved until the initiation of the eruption. The characteristics of seismicity and surface deformation suggest that the necessary space to accumulate magma at this shallower position, which coincides with the crust/mantle boundary beneath El Hierro, was created in about 2 months by elastic deformation and magma-driven fracturing of the crust. After this first intrusion episode, part of the magma started to migrate laterally toward the SE for nearly 20 km, always keeping the same depth and following a path apparently controlled by stress barriers created by tectonic and rheological contrasts in the upper lithosphere. This lateral migration of magma ended with a submarine eruption at about 5 km offshore from the southern corner of El Hierro Island. The total seismic energy released during the unrest episode was of 8.1 × 1011 J, and the total uplift previous to the onset of the eruption was of 40 mm. Combining geological, geophysical, and petrological data and numerical modeling, we propose a volcanological model of the causes and mechanisms of El Hierro eruption that shows how the stress distribution in the crust beneath El Hierro, which was influenced by rheological contrasts, tectonic stresses, and gravitational loading, controlled the movement and eruption of magma. We also discuss the implications of this model in terms of eruption forecast in the Canary Islands.

Mt. Etna volcano is located in a complex tectonic setting, with large sectors of its eastern flank sliding seaward at different rates. According to recent petrologic studies, the Etna's plumbing system has a multifaceted geometry, variable in space and time and consisting of storage zones at different depths, where magma ascending to the surface undergoes various processes, mainly fractional crystallization and mixing. In this framework we investigated a possible cause–effect relationship between the flank displacement and pre-eruptive magmatic processes in the shallow plumbing system ( Furthermore, a comparison between petrologic data and deformative patterns evidences that, from 1995 to July 2001, the aforementioned pre-eruptive magmatic processes did not significantly influence the volcano eastern flank dislocation, which stayed slow and fairly regular. By contrast, the onset of the 2001 flank eruption leads to an acceleration of the movement as a consequence of the ascent, of a primitive, volatile-rich, sub-aphyric basaltic magma from a deeper (about 10 km b.s.l.) reservoir, during the 2001 and 2002–03 activity. We analyzed crater SO 2 fluxes from Mt Etna, together with soil CO 2 effluxes from the volcano's flanks, in the period from 2001 to 2005. Between the 2001 and 2002–2003 eruptions, persistently low values of both parameters suggest that no new gas-rich magma was accumulating at shallow depth ( 2 sin-eruptive fluxes during the two eruptions indicated sudden decompression of an un-degassed magma rising along newly-formed eccentric conduits. In November 2003, soil CO 2 data indicate migration of gas-rich magma from deep (> 10 km) to shallow ( 2 fluxes. A similar behavior was observed also during and after the following 2004–2005 eruption. This degassing style matches a period of increased structural instability of the volcanic edifice caused by acceleration of spreading that affected both its eastern and southern flanks. Spreading could have triggered progressively deeper depressurization in the central conduit, inducing release of the more soluble gas (SO 2 ) first, and then of CO 2 , contrary to what was observed before the 2001 eruption. This suggests that the edifice has depressurized, promoting ascent of fresh-magma and increasing permeability favouring release of CO 2 flux. By integrating geochemical and structural data, previous degassing models developed at Mt. Etna have been updated to advance the understanding of eruptive events that occurred in recent years.

Agri Dagi (Ararat), whilst being the tallest volcano in Turkey, is largely understudied. Two predominant peaks, Greater and Lesser Agri, make up the main edifice, which has been built during four main phases. The most recent phase consisted of two volcanic eruptions. The respective surface area and volume of the first volcanic eruption were estimated at 96 km2 and 3.2 km3, whereas those of the second eruption were much smaller with the surface area and volume estimated at 25 km2 and 0.6 km3. It is unusual for stratovolcanoes to produce basaltic eruptions of more than 3 km3, although these and larger volumes are not uncommon in flood basalt-type eruptions. Large basaltic eruptions from stratovolcanoes normally require volcano-tectonic forcing (e.g. subsidence of collapse caldera and graben). However, there is no evidence for such volcano-tectonic forcing, during the most recent eruptions at Agri Dagi (Ararat), and therefore, their comparatively large volume basaltic lavas need to be explained in a different way. Here, we present an analytical method for calculating the source volume needed to supply magma to the eruptions at Agri Dagi. We found that the lava flow of 3.2 km3 was likely fed by a very large magma reservoir (∼13,000 km3), while the second flow of 0.6 km3 was fed by a reservoir of a much smaller effective size (or ∼2000 km3). ‘Effective size’ depends on what fraction of the reservoir participates in the eruption. We propose that the entire reservoir supplied magma to the larger eruption, but only one of its compartments (about one fifth of the total volume of the reservoir) supplied magma to the smaller eruption. Although seismic tomography indicates a magma reservoir at great depths (>20–30 km) below the Agri Dagi volcano, geochemical constraints on some of the later-formed rocks suggest an interaction between a shallow chamber (at 8–10-km depth) and the deep reservoir approximately 0.5 Ma. We provide numerical models whose results indicate that dykes injected from the lateral margins of the deep-seated reservoir are more likely to reach the surface directly rather than replenish the shallow magma chamber, suggesting also that the compartment for the second eruption was at the margin of the reservoir.

On the 28 December 2014, a violent and short paroxysmal eruption occurred at the South East Crater (SEC) of Mount Etna that led to the formation of huge niches on the SW and NE flanks of the SEC edifice from which a volume of ~3 × 106 m3 of lava was erupted. Two basaltic lava flows discharged at a rate of ~370 m3/s, reaching a maximum distance of ~5 km. The seismicity during the event was scarce and the eruption was not preceded by any notable ground deformation, which instead was dramatic during and immediately after the event. The SO2 flux associated with the eruption was relatively low and even decreased few days before. Observations suggest that the paroxysm was not related to the ascent of volatile-rich fresh magma from a deep reservoir (dyke intrusion), but instead to a collapse of a portion of SEC, similar to what happens on exogenous andesitic domes. The sudden and fast discharge eventually triggered a depressurization in the shallow volcano plumbing system that drew up fresh magma from depth. Integration of data and observations has allowed to formulate a novel interpretation of mechanism leading volcanic activity at Mt. Etna and on basaltic volcanoes worldwide.
