This study investigates the integration of Building Information Models (BIMs) and Virtual Tour (VT) environments in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry, focusing on Computer-Aided Facility Management (CAFM), Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMSs), and data Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA). The interconnected nature of tasks throughout a building’s life cycle increasingly demands a seamless integration of real-time monitoring, 3D models, and building data technologies. While there are numerous examples of effective links between IoT and BIMs, as well as IoT and VTs, a research gap exists concerning VT-BIM integration. This article presents a technical solution that connects BIMs and IoT data using VTs to enhance workflow efficiency and information transfer. The VT is developed upon a pilot based on the Controlled Environments for Living Lab Studies (CELLS), a unique facility designed for flexible monitoring and remote-control processes that incorporate BIMs and IoT technologies. The findings offer valuable insights into the potential of VTs to complement and connect to BIMs from a life-cycle perspective, improving the usability of digital twins for beginner users and contributing to the advancement of the AEC and CAFM industries. Our technical solution helps complete the connectivity of BIMs-VT-IoT, providing an intuitive interface (VT) for rapid data visualisation and access to dashboards, models and building databases. The practical field of application is facility management, enhancing monitoring and asset management tasks. This includes (a) sensor data monitoring, (b) remote control of connected equipment, and (c) centralised access to asset-space information bridging BIM and visual (photographic/video) data.

In the last two years, a growing number of studies have focused on the promotion of students’ mental health to address the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, less studies have been conducted on sustaining teachers’ mental health which has been affected by the sudden changes in online teaching and the difficulties in keeping and building relationship with students. Even before the pandemic, teaching has long been recognised as one of the most challenging occupations characterized by high levels of stress. Although the research highlighted the key role of mental health promotion among teachers, there is still a lack of programs enhancing teachers’ wellbeing. This study examined the impact of the PROMEHS program, a school-based curriculum, on teachers’ mental health. A total of 687 teachers participated in the study. Applying a pre- and post-training study design with experimental and waiting list groups, teachers were evaluated in social and emotional learning, resilience, and self-efficacy. The results showed that there was a significant improvement in all competences of the teachers in the experimental group compared to those in the waiting list group. The paper discusses the implications of the findings with recommendations for further studies in the area.

The mammalian carboxylesterase 1 (Ces1/CES1) family comprises several enzymes that hydrolyze many xenobiotic chemicals and endogenous lipids. To investigate the pharmacological and physiological roles of Ces1/CES1, we generated Ces1 cluster knockout (Ces1–/–) mice, and a hepatic human CES1 transgenic model in the Ces1–/– background (TgCES1). Ces1–/– mice displayed profoundly decreased conversion of the anticancer prodrug irinotecan to SN-38 in plasma and tissues. TgCES1 mice exhibited enhanced metabolism of irinotecan to SN-38 in liver and kidney. Ces1 and hCES1 activity increased irinotecan toxicity, likely by enhancing the formation of pharmacodynamically active SN-38. Ces1–/– mice also showed markedly increased capecitabine plasma exposure, which was moderately decreased in TgCES1 mice. Ces1–/– mice were overweight with increased adipose tissue, white adipose tissue inflammation (in males), a higher lipid load in brown adipose tissue, and impaired blood glucose tolerance (in males). These phenotypes were mostly reversed in TgCES1 mice. TgCES1 mice displayed increased triglyceride secretion from liver to plasma, together with higher triglyceride levels in the male liver. These results indicate that the carboxylesterase 1 family plays essential roles in drug and lipid metabolism and detoxification. Ces1–/– and TgCES1 mice will provide excellent tools for further study of the in vivo functions of Ces1/CES1 enzymes.

Hospitalization is stressful for children and their families that can affect health outcomes, depending on how they face the situation. This study analyzed how children deal with indicators of physiological and psychological stress related to hospitalization. Participants were 20 children aged five years old, most of them hospitalized for chronic diseases, in a public hospital in Cuiabá, MT. The following were applied individually in the playroom library: a) Morning and late afternoon salivary cortisol index to measure physiological stress; b) Interview script on illness and hospitalization - child version; and c) Hospitalization Coping Scale (COPE-H). Salivary cortisol was above that indicated in four children. More than half of the sample reported having difficulties caused by the disease to perform several activities; invasive medical procedures are more aversive. They also presented psychological stress responses, with coping of involuntary and voluntary disengagement within the mean age. They reported adaptive strategies to deal with hospitalization, such as watching TV, talking, taking medication and, especially, playing, evaluated as a stress reducer by almost half of the children. However, half of the sample presented a poorly adaptive coping pattern of hospitalization below that expected for their age. There were no significant correlations between salivary cortisol index and coping. Consistent with the literature of the area on the limitations imposed by hospitalization and psychosocial consequences for the child and the caregiving family, the results indicate the importance of interventions in the coping of hospitalization for this population in this age group.

Resilience is an individual's ability to adapt successfully to and persevere during and after significant challenges. Resilience programmes based on a socioemotional learning approach have been associated with an increase in protextive factors (e.g., prosocial competencies), improvements in physical and mental health, and a decrease in internalised and externalised symptoms. The present study aimed to evaluate the impact of the RESCUR curriculum implemented in Portuguese schools on students' academic, behavioural, and socioemotional outcomes, based on child and teacher reports. Participants included 1,084 children (53.2% male) aged 3-15 (M = 7.24, SD = 2.31). A quasi-experimental study compared outcomes for an experimental intervention group (AIG) with a waiting list control group (WG). The results showed the RESCUR programme decreased mental health difficulties while increasing both prosocial behaviours and well-being. In addition, academic performance increased for those in preschool after implementation. Both teachers and children consistently reported positive behavioural changes in resilience-related competencies after implementing RESCUR. Our findings contribute to the recent research on the potential of RESCUR to address key socioemotional competencies and improve relevant protextive factors. Study limitations and future recommendations are addressed.

Resumo O presente estudo tem como objetivo descrever a implantação de uma metodologia de avaliação das assinaturas/renovações de periódicos aplicada no Sistema de Bibliotecas da Universidade Estadual de Campinas. A metodologia criada compreende a utilização de três indicadores fundamentais - estatística de uso, relação custo por acesso e relevância dos conteúdos, os quais subsidiam a tomada de decisão sobre a manutenção, ou não, de um determinado título de periódico ou se é mais vantajosa a obtenção individual de artigos desses periódicos por meio de convênios internacionais entre bibliotecas. Os resultados alcançados permitiram a racionalização de recursos financeiros em aquisições e renovações das assinaturas de fontes de informação eletrônicas, - sem que se perdesse de vista a qualidade das atividades de ensino, pesquisa e extensão na Universidade.

This paper explores a data augmentation approach for images of rigid bodies, particularly focusing on electrical equipment and analogous industrial objects. By leveraging manufacturer-provided datasheets containing precise equipment dimensions, we employed straightforward algorithms to generate synthetic images, permitting the expansion of the training dataset from a potentially unlimited viewpoint. In scenarios lacking genuine target images, we conducted a case study using two well-known detectors, representing two machine-learning paradigms: the Viola–Jones (VJ) and You Only Look Once (YOLO) detectors, trained exclusively on datasets featuring synthetic images as the positive examples of the target equipment, namely lightning rods and potential transformers. Performances of both detectors were assessed using real images in both visible and infrared spectra. YOLO consistently demonstrates F1 scores below 26% in both spectra, while VJ’s scores lie in the interval from 38% to 61%. This performance discrepancy is discussed in view of paradigms’ strengths and weaknesses, whereas the relatively high scores of at least one detector are taken as empirical evidence in favor of the proposed data augmentation approach.

IntroductionThe Antarctic McMurdo Dry Valleys are geologically diverse, encompassing a wide variety of soil habitats. These environments are largely dominated by microorganisms, which drive the ecosystem services of the region. While altitude is a well-established driver of eukaryotic biodiversity in these Antarctic ice-free areas (and many non-Antarctic environments), little is known of the relationship between altitude and microbial community structure and functionality in continental Antarctica.MethodsWe analysed prokaryotic and lower eukaryotic diversity from soil samples across a 684 m altitudinal transect in the lower Taylor Valley, Antarctica and performed a phylogenic characterization of soil microbial communities using short-read sequencing of the 16S rRNA and ITS marker gene amplicons.Results and DiscussionPhylogenetic analysis showed clear altitudinal trends in soil microbial composition and structure. Cyanobacteria were more prevalent in higher altitude samples, while the highly stress resistant Chloroflexota and Deinococcota were more prevalent in lower altitude samples. We also detected a shift from Basidiomycota to Chytridiomycota with increasing altitude. Several genera associated with trace gas chemotrophy, including Rubrobacter and Ornithinicoccus, were widely distributed across the entire transect, suggesting that trace-gas chemotrophy may be an important trophic strategy for microbial survival in oligotrophic environments. The ratio of trace-gas chemotrophs to photoautotrophs was significantly higher in lower altitude samples. Co-occurrence network analysis of prokaryotic communities showed some significant differences in connectivity within the communities from different altitudinal zones, with cyanobacterial and trace-gas chemotrophy-associated taxa being identified as potential keystone taxa for soil communities at higher altitudes. By contrast, the prokaryotic network at low altitudes was dominated by heterotrophic keystone taxa, thus suggesting a clear trophic distinction between soil prokaryotic communities at different altitudes. Based on these results, we conclude that altitude is an important driver of microbial ecology in Antarctic ice-free soil habitats.

Abstract Background Top-soil microbiomes make a vital contribution to the Earth’s ecology and harbor an extraordinarily high biodiversity. They are also key players in many ecosystem services, particularly in arid regions of the globe such as the African continent. While several recent studies have documented patterns in global soil microbial ecology, these are largely biased towards widely studied regions and rely on models to interpolate the microbial diversity of other regions where there is low data coverage. This is the case for sub-Saharan Africa, where the number of regional microbial studies is very low in comparison to other continents. Results The aim of this study was to conduct an extensive biogeographical survey of sub-Saharan Africa’s top-soil microbiomes, with a specific focus on investigating the environmental drivers of microbial ecology across the region. In this study, we sampled 810 sample sites across 9 sub-Saharan African countries and used taxonomic barcoding to profile the microbial ecology of these regions. Our results showed that the sub-Saharan nations included in the study harbor qualitatively distinguishable soil microbiomes. In addition, using soil chemistry and climatic data extracted from the same sites, we demonstrated that the top-soil microbiome is shaped by a broad range of environmental factors, most notably pH, precipitation, and temperature. Through the use of structural equation modeling, we also developed a model to predict how soil microbial biodiversity in sub-Saharan Africa might be affected by future climate change scenarios. This model predicted that the soil microbial biodiversity of countries such as Kenya will be negatively affected by increased temperatures and decreased precipitation, while the fungal biodiversity of Benin will benefit from the increase in annual precipitation. Conclusion This study represents the most extensive biogeographical survey of sub-Saharan top-soil microbiomes to date. Importantly, this study has allowed us to identify countries in sub-Saharan Africa that might be particularly vulnerable to losses in soil microbial ecology and productivity due to climate change. Considering the reliance of many economies in the region on rain-fed agriculture, this study provides crucial information to support conservation efforts in the countries that will be most heavily impacted by climate change.
