80. Impact of N-Substituent and pKaof Azole Rings on Fuel Cell Performance and Phosphoric Acid Loss

Abstract

The influence of N-substituent and pKaof azole rings has been investigated for the performance of high-temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (HT-PEMFCs). Imidazole, benzimidazole, and triazole groups were functionalized on the side chains of poly(phenylene oxide), respectively. Each azole group is categorized by their N-substituent into two types: unsubstituted and methyl-substituted azoles. The membranes with methyl-substituted azoles showed higher phosphoric acid (PA) doping levels with an average increase of 20% compared to those with unsubstituted azoles in the full-doped states. However, unsubstituted azoles more effectively improved the proton conductivity and the membrane with unsubstituted imidazole (IMPPO-H) showed a high anhydrous proton conductivity of 153 mS/cm at 150 °C. In contrast, the membranes with methyl-substituted azoles showed a higher PA retention with an average increase of 81% compared to those with unsubstituted azoles. The higher PA retention of methyl-substituted azoles also led to the higher fuel cell performance with the maximum increase of 95% in the power density. It was also revealed that higher pKaof azoles enhanced the PA retention and the fuel cell performance. Based on the experimental results of PA retention and density functional theory calculations, the PA loss mechanism was also proposed.

Abstract

This paper describes numerical analyses on low volume roads (LVRs) using a nonlinear three-dimensional (3D) finite element model (FEM). Various pavement scenarios are analyzed to investigate the effects of pavement layer thicknesses, traffic loads, and material properties on pavement responses, such as surface deflection and subgrade strain. Each scenario incorporates a different combination of wheel/axle configurations and pavement geomaterial properties to analyze the nonlinear behavior of thinly surfaced asphalt pavement. In this numerical study, nonlinear stress-dependent models are employed in the base and subgrade layers to properly characterize pavement geomaterial behavior. Finite element analysis results are then described in terms of the effects of the asphalt pavement thickness, wheel/axle configurations, and geomaterial properties on critical pavement responses. Conclusions are drawn by the comparison of the nonlinear pavement responses in the base and subgrade in association with the effects of multiple wheel/axle load interactions. Skirtingi dangų paviršiaus variantai analizuojami siekiant ištirti, kokiąįtaką kelio dangos elgsenai, t. y. poslinkiams ir kelio pagrindo deformacijoms, turi dangų sluoksnių storiai, eismo apkrovos ir medžiagų savybės. Kiekvienas kelio dangos variantas turi skirtingas ratų arba ašies ir geometrinių savybių formas, kad būtų galima išanalizuoti netiesinę plonos asfalto dangos paviršiaus elgseną. Šioje skaitinėje analizėje nagrinėjami netiesiniai įtempių modeliai, kurie buvo taikomi pagrindo sluoksniams, siekiant tinkamai apibūdinti geometrinę kelio dangos elgseną. Baigtinių elementų analizės rezultatai toliau nagrinėjami atsižvelgiant į asfalto dangos storį ar ašies formą ir geometrines savybes, priklausomai nuo kritinės kelio dangos būklės. Išvados buvo gautos lyginant netiesines kelių dangos priklausomybes pagrindo sluoksnyje, atsižvelgiant į jų sąveiką su daugkartine ratų apkrova. Reikšminiai žodžiai: mažo intensyvumo kelias,trimatė baigtinio elemento analizė,netiesinės dangos paviršiaus priklausomybės,daugkartinės ratų arba ašies apkrovos,geometrinės savybės.

Abstract

This project investigated methods on automating field data collection of materials. The method chosen and investigated was bar codes. The automated process requires material suppliers to produce delivery forms that can be recorded and tracked using bar codes. The report describes a system configuration that shows a conceptual process to electronically transfer materials information between the material supplier, trucking company, INDOT personnel and contractor. Other activities reported include survey results from other state transportation agencies, material suppliers, and concrete paving companies. Also, investigated was how to interface with SiteManager software. Recommendations described hardware options for using bar codes and industry reaction to using bar coded delivery tickets.

97. Impact of Stoichiometry on the Electronic Structure of PbS Quantum Dots

Abstract

Although the stoichiometry of bulk lead sulfide (PbS) is exactly 1∶1, that of quantum dots (QDs) can be considerably different from this crystalline limit. Employing first-principles calculations, we show that the impact of PbS QD stoichiometry on the electronic structure can be enormous, suggesting that control over the overall stoichiometry in the QD will play a critical role for improving the efficiency of optoelectronic devices made with PbS QDs. In particular, for bare PbS QDs, we find that: (i) stoichiometric PbS QDs are free from midgap states even without ligand passivation and independent of shape, (ii) off stoichiometry in PbS QDs introduces new states in the gap that are highly localized on certain surface atoms, and (iii) further deviations in stoichiometry lead to QDs with “metallic” behavior, with a dense number of energy states near the Fermi level. We further demonstrate that this framework holds for the case of passivated QDs by considering the attachment of ligand molecules as stoichiometry variations. Our calculations show that an optimal number of ligands makes the QD stoichiometric and heals unfavorable electronic structure, whereas too few or too many ligands cause effective off stoichiometry, resulting in QDs with defect states in the gap., Samsung Electronics Co. 98. Thermoelectric properties of nanoporous Ge

Abstract

We computed thermoelectric properties of nanoporous Ge (np-Ge) with aligned pores along the [001] direction through a combined classical molecular dynamics and first-principles electronic structure approach. A significant reduction in the lattice thermal conductivity of np-Ge leads to a 30-fold increase in the thermoelectric figure-of-merit (ZT) compared to that of bulk. Detailed comparisons with the recently proposed np-Si show that although the maximum ZT (ZT[subscript max]) of Ge is nine times larger than that of Si in the bulk phase, ZT[subscript max] of np-Ge is twice as large as that of np-Si due to the similarity in lattice thermal conductivity of the two np systems. 99. Energy gap of Kronig-Penney-type hydrogenated graphene superlattices

Abstract

The electronic structure of graphene-graphane superlattices with armchair interfaces is investigated with first-principles density-functional theory. By separately varying the widths, we find that the energy gap Eg is inversely proportional to the width of the graphene strip and that the gap increases as the hydrogenated strip becomes wider due to the enhanced confinement effect. It is further demonstrated that, unlike other graphene nanostructures, the superlattices exhibit both direct and indirect band gaps without external perturbations. This peculiarity in the nature of Eg originates from the different connection structures of the symmetrized wave function at the boundary between adjacent unit cells due to the reflection symmetry of the superlattices. 100. Review Construction Techniques for Accelerated Construction and Cost Implications

Abstract

Transportation construction activities on heavy traffic routes can be very disruptive to the system users due to lane closures, construction traffic, or reduced speed zones. Besides the driving public, local businesses are also affected by noise and air pollution, loss of access, or changing access routes. Thus, it is apparent that minimizing construction time will lessen these impacts. The primary objectives of this project are to explore some alternative methods to expedite construction time for particular project types whereby mitigating disruptions to the traveling public and to identify construction activities that can be accelerated by those selected methods. To accomplish these objectives, this project evaluated state-of-the-art construction techniques for accelerating processes at the jobsite by investigating practices of other transportation agencies (DOT) and their cost implications.
