Abstract

We present results from our analysis of the Hydra I cluster observed in neutral atomic hydrogen (H  i) as part of the Widefield ASKAP L-band Legacy All-sky Blind Survey (WALLABY). These WALLABY observations cover a 60-square-degree field of view with uniform sensitivity and a spatial resolution of 30 arcsec. We use these wide-field observations to investigate the effect of galaxy environment on H  i gas removal and star formation quenching by comparing the properties of cluster, infall, and field galaxies extending up to ∼5 R 200 from the cluster centre. We find a sharp decrease in the H  i -detected fraction of infalling galaxies at a projected distance of ∼1.5 R 200 from the cluster centre from |$\sim 85{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| to |$\sim 35{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠. We see evidence for the environment removing gas from the outskirts of H  i -detected cluster and infall galaxies through the decrease in the H  i to r -band optical disc diameter ratio. These galaxies lie on the star-forming main sequence, indicating that gas removal is not yet affecting the inner star-forming discs and is limited to the galaxy outskirts. Although we do not detect galaxies undergoing galaxy-wide quenching, we do observe a reduction in recent star formation in the outer disc of cluster galaxies, which is likely due to the smaller gas reservoirs present beyond the optical radius in these galaxies. Stacking of H  i non-detections with H  i masses below |$M_{\rm {HI}}\lesssim 10^{8.4}\, \rm {M}_{\odot }$| will be required to probe the H  i of galaxies undergoing quenching at distances ≳60 Mpc with WALLABY. Abstract

We use new high-resolution H  i data from the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder to investigate the dynamics of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). We model the H  i gas component as a rotating disc of non-negligible angular size, moving into the plane of the sky, and undergoing nutation/precession motions. We derive a high-resolution (∼10 pc) rotation curve of the SMC out to |$R\sim 4 \, \, {\rm kpc}$|⁠. After correcting for asymmetric drift, the circular velocity slowly rises to a maximum value of |$V_\mathrm{c}\simeq 55 \, \, {\rm km\, s}^{-1}$| at |$R\simeq 2.8 \, \, {\rm kpc}$| and possibly flattens outwards. In spite of the SMC undergoing strong gravitational interactions with its neighbours, its H  i rotation curve is akin to that of many isolated gas-rich dwarf galaxies. We decompose the rotation curve and explore different dynamical models to deal with the unknown 3D shape of the mass components (gas, stars, and dark matter). We find that, for reasonable mass-to-light ratios, a dominant dark matter halo with mass |$M_\mathrm{DM}(R\lt 4 \, \, {\rm kpc}) \simeq 1\!-\!1.5 \times 10^9 \, {\rm M}_\odot$| is always required to successfully reproduce the observed rotation curve, implying a large baryon fraction of |$30{{\ \rm per\ cent}}\!-\!40{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠. Abstract

We present Widefield ASKAP L -band Legacy All-sky Blind Survey (WALLABY) early science results from the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) observations of the NGC 7162 galaxy group. We use archival HIPASS and Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) observations of this group to validate the new ASKAP data and the data reduction pipeline ASKAP  soft. We detect six galaxies in the neutral hydrogen (H  i) 21-cm line, expanding the NGC 7162 group membership from four to seven galaxies. Two of the new detections are also the first H  i detections of the dwarf galaxies, AM 2159-434 and GALEXASC J220338.65-431128.7, for which we have measured velocities of cz  = 2558 and cz  = 2727 km s−1, respectively. We confirm that there is extended H  i emission around NGC 7162 possibly due to past interactions in the group as indicated by the 40° offset between the kinematic and morphological major axes for NGC 7162A, and its H  i richness. Taking advantage of the increased resolution (factor of ∼1.5) of the ASKAP data over archival ATCA observations, we fit a tilted ring model and use envelope tracing to determine the galaxies' rotation curves. Using these we estimate the dynamical masses and find, as expected, high dark matter fractions of f DM ∼ 0.81−0.95 for all group members. The ASKAP data are publicly available. Abstract

We present new HI observations from the Australia Telescope Compact Array and deep optical imaging from OmegaCam on the VLT Survey Telescope of NGC 1427A, an arrow-shaped dwarf irregular galaxy located in the Fornax cluster. The data reveal a star-less HI tail that contains ~10 per cent of the atomic gas of NGC 1427A as well as extended stellar emission that shed new light on the recent history of this galaxy. Rather than being the result of ram pressure induced star formation, as previously suggested in the literature, the disturbed optical appearance of NGC 1427A has tidal origins. The galaxy itself likely consists of two individual objects in an advanced stage of merging. The HI tail may be made of gas expelled to large radii during the same tidal interaction. It is possible that some of this gas is subject to ram pressure, which would be considered a secondary effect and implies a north-west trajectory of NGC 1427A within the Fornax cluster. Abstract

We present Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA (ALFALFA) and follow-up Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) HI observations of the gas-rich interacting group NGC 3166/9. The sensitive ALFALFA data provide a complete census of HI-bearing systems in the group while the high-resolution GMRT data elucidate their origin, enabling one of the first unbiased physical studies of gas-rich dwarf companions and the subsequent identification of second generation, tidal dwarf galaxies in a nearby group. The ALFALFA maps reveal an extended HI envelope around the NGC 3166/9 group core, which we mosaic at higher resolution using six GMRT pointings spanning ~1 square degree. A thorough search of the GMRT datacube reveals eight low-mass objects with gas masses ranging from 4x10^7 to 3x10^8 M_sol and total dynamical masses up to 1.4x10^9 M_sol. A comparison of the HI fluxes measured from the GMRT data to those measured in the ALFALFA data suggests that a significant fraction (~60%) of the HI is smoothly distributed on scales greater than an arcminute (~7 kpc at the NGC 3166/9 distance). We compute stellar masses and star formation rates for the eight low-mass GMRT detections, using ancillary SDSS and GALEX data, and use these values to constrain their origin. Most of the detections are likely to be either pre-existing dwarf irregular galaxies or short-lived, tidally formed knots; however, one candidate, AGC 208457, is clearly associated with a tidal tail extending below NGC 3166, exhibits a dynamical to gas mass ratio close to unity and has a stellar content and star formation rate that are broadly consistent with both simulated as well as candidate tidal dwarf galaxies from the literature.
