The variation of radial impurity distribution induced by surface tension driven flow increases as the zone length decreases in silicon crystals grown by floating zone melting. In combined buoyancy driven and surface tension driven convection at the gravity of earth, the buoyancy contribution becomes relatively smaller as the zone diameter decreases and eventually convection is dominated by the surface tension driven flow (in the case of silicon, for zones of less than about 0.8 cm in diameter). Preliminary calculations for sapphire suggest the presence of an oscillatory surface tension driven convection as a result of an unstable melt surface temperature that results when the zone is heated by a radiation heater.

The paper examines convection phenomena during the growth of sodium chlorate crystals from solution. Schlieren observations of sodium chlorate crystals suspended in supersaturated solutions showed that with increase in supersaturation or crystal size, the boundary layer on the side faces was stable while the top boundary layer and emerging plume changed from stable to partially oscillatory. The transition was a function of the Grashof number, Gr sub top, and the crystal height. Gr sub top correlated with plume width, number of streamlines, eddy density, and plume velocity, but the oscillation period correlated with the weight increase growth rate. The mass transfer rate, the linear growth rate, and growth of vertical and horizontal faces are discussed, and an estimate of boundary layer flow vs growth rate for near-critical stable convection indicated that growth of side faces depleted over half of the excess solute in the boundary layer. Impulse energies greatly in excess of the threshold value caused transient separation of the boundary layer on the top face, and plume wavering due to background-induced fluid motion was observed only at the lowest supersaturations.

InSb-GaSb solid solution ingots prepared by directional solidification aboard Skylab and on earth consist of twins with (111) twin planes parallel to the direction of solidification and growth directions that lie along 211, 110, or 321 crystallographic directions. Significant fractions of several ingots prepared aboard Skylab were solidified from melts that were not in contact with container walls, resulting in convection driven by surface tension gradients in the melt and corresponding radially-symmetric composition variations in the ingot. In these regions, adjacent twins exhibit marked differences in indium content, indicating a substantial dependence of composition on crystallographic orientation.
