61. Effect of Cold Work on Elevated-Temperature Properties of Types 301, 305, and 310 Stainless Steels

Abstract

The elevated-temperature strength of AISI Types 301, 305, and 310 stainless steels can be improved by cold-working, provided extensive recrystallization during exposure does not take place. The rupture strength of cold-rolled materials decreases progressively with increasing recrystallization and eventually becomes poorer than that of annealed material when the amount of recrystallization exceeds 50 to 60 per cent. It is suggested that microstructural changes which occur as a result of recrystallization account for the detrimental effect that recrystallization exerts on high-temperature strength. These include a change in grain size and redistribution of chromium carbides in Types 301, 305, and 310, and the accelerated formation of sigma in Type 310.

Abstract

Memory T cells are long-lived antigen-experienced T cells that are generally accepted to be direct descendants of proliferating primary effector cells. However, the factors that permit selective survival of these T cells are not well established. We show that homodimeric a chains of the CDS molecule (CD8αα) are transiently induced on a selected subset of CD8aβ∼ T cells upon antigenic stimulation. These CD8αα molecules promote the survival and differentiation of activated lymphocytes into memory CD8 T cells. Thus, j memory precursors can be identified among primary effector cells and are , selected for survival and differentiation by CD8αα. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We present the motivation and development of the novel `differential phase' technique being developed for the Keck Interferometer with the goal of detecting faint companions near a bright source. The differential phase technique uses simultaneous phase measurements at several infrared wavelengths to detect the astrophysical signature produced by a chromatic, asymmetric brightness distribution. We discuss the origin of the differential phase signature and present results of test observations taken at the Palomar Testbed Interferometer. One important test result is the larger than expected effect of water vapor turbulence on these multi-wavelength observations due to the infrared dispersion of water. In order to reach the design goal of 0.1 milliradians, the phase noise caused by both temperature and water vapor fluctuations in the atmosphere must be corrected, and we discuss several ways to achieve this.
