As the sound signal of ships obtained by sensors contains other many significant characteristics of ships and called ship-radiated noise (SN), research into a denoising algorithm and its application has obtained great significance. Using the advantage of variational mode decomposition (VMD) combined with the correlation coefficient for denoising, a hybrid secondary denoising algorithm is proposed using secondary VMD combined with a correlation coefficient (CC). First, different kinds of simulation signals are decomposed into several bandwidth-limited intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) using VMD, where the decomposition number by VMD is equal to the number by empirical mode decomposition (EMD); then, the CCs between the IMFs and the simulation signal are calculated respectively. The noise IMFs are identified by the CC threshold and the rest of the IMFs are reconstructed in order to realize the first denoising process. Finally, secondary denoising of the simulation signal can be accomplished by repeating the above steps of decomposition, screening and reconstruction. The final denoising result is determined according to the CC threshold. The denoising effect is compared under the different signal-to-noise ratio and the time of decomposition by VMD. Experimental results show the validity of the proposed denoising algorithm using secondary VMD (2VMD) combined with CC compared to EMD denoising, ensemble EMD (EEMD) denoising, VMDdenoising and cubicVMD(3VMD) denoising, as well as two denoising algorithms presented recently. The proposed denoising algorithm is applied to feature extraction and classification for SN signals, which can effectively improve the recognition rate of different kinds of ships. Underwater multi-targets tracking has always been a difficult problem in active sonar tracking systems. In order to estimate the parameters of time-varying multi-targets moving in underwater environments, based on the Bayesian filtering framework, the Random Finite Set (RFS) is introduced to multi-targets tracking, which not only avoids the problem of data association in multi-targets tracking, but also realizes the estimation of the target number and their states simultaneously. Usually, the conventional Probability Hypothesis Density (PHD) and Cardinalized Probability Hypothesis Density (CPHD) algorithms assume that the detection probability is known as a priori, which is not suitable in many applications. Some methods have been proposed to estimate the detection probability, but most assume that it is constant both in time and surveillance region. In this paper, we model the detection probability through the active sonar equation. When fixed the false detection probability, we can get the analytic expression for the detection probability, which is related to target position. In addition, this novel detection probability is used in PHD and CPHD algorithms and applied to underwater active sonar tracking systems. Also, we use the adaptive ellipse gate strategy to reduce the computational load in PHD and CPHD algorithms. Under the linear Gaussian assumption, the proposed detection probability is illustrated in both Gaussian Mixture Probability Hypothesis Density (GM-PHD) and Gaussian Mixture Cardinalized Probability Hypothesis Density (GM-CPHD), respectively. A detection scheme for line spectrum of ship-radiated noise is proposed using Duffing oscillator. The chaotic trajectory of Duffing oscillator is analyzed and the state equation of the system is improved to detect weak periodic signals in different frequencies. According to the simulation results, the phase transforms of Duffing oscillator are sensitive to periodic signals and immune to the random noise and the periodic interference signals which have larger angular frequency difference from the referential signal. By employing Lyapunov exponents in the field of detection as the criteria for chaos, the phase transforms of dynamic behaviors in quantity are successfully determined. Meanwhile, the threshold value in critical state has been evaluated more accurately. Based on the phase transforms of Duffing oscillator, a new method for detecting line spectrum of ship-radiated noise is given. Three types of ship-radiated noise signals are analyzed and the values of line spectrum are acquired successfully by this method. This paper develops a joint approach for time-evolving sound speed field (SSF) inversion and moving source localization in shallow water environment. The SSF is parameterized in terms of the first three empirical orthogonal function (EOF) coefficients. The approach treats both first three EOF coefficients and source parameters (e.g., source depth, range and speed) as state vectors of evolving with time, and a measurement vector that incorporates acoustic information via a vertical line array (VLA), and then the inversion problem is formulated in a state-space model. The processors of the extended Kalman filter (EKF) and ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) are used to estimate the evolution of those six parameters. Simulation results verify the proposed approach, which enable it to invert the SSF and locate the moving source simultaneously. The root-mean-square-error (RMSE) is employed to evaluate the effectiveness of this proposed approach. The interfile comparison shows that the EnKF outperform the EKF. For the EnKF, the robustness of the approach under the sparse vertical array configuration is verified. Moreover, the impact of the source-VLA deployment on the estimation is also concerned. Entropy, as a nonlinear feature in information science, has drawn much attention for time series analysis. Entropy features have been used to measure the complexity behavior of time series. However, traditional entropy methods mainly focus on one-dimensional time series originating from single-channel transducers and are incapable of handling the multidimensional time series from multi-channel transducers. Previously, the multivariate multiscale sample entropy (MMSE) algorithm was introduced for multi-channel data analysis. Although MMSE generalizes multiscale sample entropy and provides a new method for multidimensional data analysis, it lacks necessary theoretical support and has shortcomings, such as missing cross-channel correlation information and having biased estimation results. This paper proposes an improved multivariate multiscale sample entropy (IMMSE) algorithm to overcome these shortcomings. This paper highlights the existing shortcomings in MMSE under the generalized algorithm. The rationality of IMMSE is theoretically proven using probability theory. Simulations and real-world data analysis have shown that IMMSE is capable of effectively extracting cross-channel correlation information and demonstrating robustness in practical applications. Two decades ago, it was shown that ambient noise exhibits low dimensional chaotic behavior. Recent new techniques in nonlinear science can effectively detect the underlying dynamics in noisy time series. In this paper, the presence of low dimensional deterministic dynamics in ambient noise is investigated using diverse nonlinear techniques, including correlation dimension, Lyapunov exponent, nonlinear prediction, and entropy based methods. The consistent interpretation of different methods demonstrates that ambient noise can be best modeled as nonlinear stochastic dynamics, thus rejecting the hypothesis of low dimensional chaotic behavior. The ambient noise data utilized in this study are of duration 60 s measured at South China Sea.
