Shaken black tea (SBT) is a new type of black tea that combines the traditional black tea processing technology with the shaking process of oolong tea. In this study, non-targeted metabolomics analysis based on ultra-high-pressure liquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-QTOF-MS) was applied to comprehensively analyze the non-volatile metabolites of SBT during the manufacturing process. Using multivariate statistical analysis, 93 compounds were screened as differential compounds. During the whole process of SBT, amino acids, dipeptides, theaflavins and lipids contents showed significant increases, while that of catechins and procyanidin C1 significantly decreased. Compared with fresh leaves, the content of proteinaceous amino acids (PAAs) in the dried black tea increased 1.61-fold, and total catechins decreased to 7.25%. The results of hierarchical clustering analysis (HCA) showed that fermentation is the key process that causes the variations of these metabolites, followed by drying and shaking. The biosynthesis metabolism of amino acids, flavonoids and linoleic acid are abundant, mainly due to the stress response of fresh tea leaves to dehydration and mechanical damage during shaking processing. Heterogeneous protease biosensors show high sensitivity and selectivity but usually require the immobilization of peptide substrates on a solid interface. Such methods exhibit the disadvantages of complex immobilization steps and low enzymatic efficiency induced by steric hindrance. In this work, we proposed an immobilization-free strategy for protease detection with high simplicity, sensitivity and selectivity. Specifically, a single-labeled peptide with oligohistidine-tag (His-tag) was designed as the protease substrate, which can be captured by a nickel ion-nitrilotriacetic acid (Ni-NTA)-conjugated magnetic nanoparticle (MNP) through the coordination interaction between His-tag and Ni-NTA. When the peptide was digested by protease in a homogeneous solution, the signal-labeled segment was released from the substrate. The unreacted peptide substrates could be removed by Ni-NTA-MNP, and the released segments remained in solution to emit strong fluorescence. The method was used to determine protease of caspase-3 with a low detection limit (4 pg/mL). By changing the peptide sequence and signal reporters, the proposal could be used to develop novel homogeneous biosensors for the detection of other proteases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: In this paper, a class of nonlinear matrix equations is considered. An equivalent form of this equation is derived, and the properties of the solutions are studied. The accelerated charge transfer channels are constructed via the introduction of vanadium into CoFe-LDHs. The overall OER and HER performance are enhanced due to the interactions among three metal components. Herein, vanadium is responsible for optimizing the electronic structure while cobalt and iron play key roles in regulating the HER and OER performance, respectively. A series of self-supported electrocatalysts composed of tri-metallic CoFeV-LDHs generated on conductive carbon cloth (denoted as CoFeV@CC) have been constructed. The specific interaction among Co, Fe and V is systematically revealed via tuning the molar ratios of M2+:M3+ and Fe3+:V3+ in these tri-metallic LDHs. Finally, the optimal synergistic effect is reached when the molar ratios of M2+:M3+ and Fe3+:V3+ are respectively 4:1 and 1:1, resulting in the product named Co 8 FeV@CC, which displays the best overall OER and HER performance. Only rather low overpotentials of 235 and 182 mV are required to attain the current density of 100 mA cm−2 with a Faradaic efficiency of nearly 100 % for OER and HER, respectively. Co 8 FeV@CC can thus be applied as both an anode and cathode in the symmetrical two-electrode and possesses a current density of 100 mA cm−2 at the cell voltage of 1.65 V, and further demonstrates ultra-high stability for 100 h. The present study examined the clinical significance of serum neuron-specific enolase (NSE) in patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). Serum NSE values were measured using a electrochemiluminescence assay in 106 patients and tissue NSE expression was examined using immunohistochemistry in 65 patients. Fifty-four percent of patients had a positive expression of serum NSE (>15.20 ng/mL), and cytoplasmic NSE was pathologically demonstrated in 26/65 cases, which showed a positive correlation with that of serum NSE expression. The serum NSE value was closely correlated with performance status, serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) level, International Prognostic Index (IPI) score, and Ann Arbor stage, and declined significantly in patients who responded to treatment. In the rituximab-immunochemotherapy group, there was a significant difference in the 5-year overall survival (OS) rate between the NSE-positive and -negative groups (93%% vs. 44%%, p == 0.001), and the serum NSE level was found to be an independent prognostic factor. Serum NSE may be a novel marker of disease aggressiveness as well as a prognostic factor for DLBCL in the era of rituximab. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using the technique of pinning coupling in chaos control, we investigate how the two-dimensional drift-wave plasma turbulence described by the Hasegawa-Mima equation can be regulated into different spatiotemporal patterns. It is shown both analytically and numerically that, depending on the pattern structure of the target, the pinning strength necessary for regulating the turbulence could have a large variation. More specifically, with the increase of the wave number of the target, the critical pinning strength is found to be increased by a power-law scaling. Moreover, in both the transition and transient process of the pinning regulation, the modes of the turbulence are found to be suppressed in a hierarchical fashion, that is, by the sequence of mode wave number. The findings give insight into the dynamics of drift-wave turbulence, as well as indicative to the design of new control techniques for real-world turbulence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hesperetin (HSP) is a natural flavonoid that offers useful curative effects for cardiovascular diseases, but its effect on myocardial ischemia and its precise mechanism remains unclear. The aim of this study is to explore the potential cardioprotective mechanism of HSP on myocardial ischemia caused by isoproterenol (ISO). Adult male Kunming mice were randomly divided into five groups: control, ISO, low-dose HSP (L-HSP, 25 mg/kg/d), high-dose HSP (H-HSP, 50 mg/kg/d), and verapamil (VER) group. Treatment groups of mice received HSP or VER for seven days, and the groups other than the control group were injected with ISO (100 mg/kg/d) subcutaneously for two consecutive days to establish a model of myocardial ischemia. Electrocardiogram and heart-histology changes were used to assess changes in myocardial architecture. The activities and the content of oxidative stress markers and inflammatory cytokines were determined and assayed using kits respectively. The expressions of proteins associated with apoptosis and the Sirt1/Nrf2 pathway were evaluated by Western blotting. The results demonstrate that VER, L-HSP and H-HSP significantly reduced the J-point displacement, heart rate, cardiac pathomorphological changes, and the levels of creatine kinase, lactated dehydrogenase, malonaldehyde, interleukin-6, and tumor necrosis factor-α in serum while promoting the activation of superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione in serum in the ISO-treated animals. Furthermore, L-HSP and H-HSP also reversed the ISO-induced apoptosis and the changes in the Sirt1/Nrf2 signaling pathway, as evident from the levels of proteins Bax, Bcl-2, caspase-3, Sirt1, Nrf2, NQO-1, and HO-1. In conclusion, HSP plays a protective role in ISO-induced myocardial ischemia by modulating oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis via Sirt1/Nrf2 pathway activation. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) homeostasis and mitochondrial metabolism are critical for the survival of cancer cells, including cancer stem cells (CSCs), which often cause drug resistance and cancer relapse. Auranofin is a mono-gold anti-rheumatic drug, and it has been repurposed as an anticancer agent working by the induction of both ROS increase and mitochondrial dysfunction. Hypothetically, increasing auranofin's positive charges via incorporating more gold atoms to enhance its mitochondria-targeting capacity could enhance its anti-cancer efficacy. Hence, in this work, both mono-gold and bi-gold compounds were designed and evaluated to test our hypothesis. The results showed that bi-gold compounds generally suppressed cancer cells proliferation better than their mono-gold counterparts. The most potent compound, BGC2a, substantially inhibited the antioxidant enzyme TrxR and increased the cellular ROS. BGC2a induced cell apoptosis, which could not be reversed by the antioxidant agent vitamin C, implying that the ROS induced by TrxR inhibition might not be the decisive cause of cell death. As expected, a significant proportion of BGC2a accumulated within mitochondria, likely contributing to mitochondrial dysfunction, which was further confirmed by measuring oxygen consumption rate, mitochondrial membrane potential, and ATP production. Moreover, BGC2a inhibited colony formation and reduced stem-like side population (SP) cells of A549. Finally, the compound effectively suppressed the tumor growth of both A549 and PANC-1 xenografts. Our study showed that mitochondrial disturbance may be gold-based compounds' major lethal factor in eradicating cancer cells, providing a new approach to developing potent gold-based anti-cancer drugs by increasing mitochondria-targeting capacity. BACKGROUND: Floral and sweet odors are two typical characteristic aromas of Congou black tea, but their aroma‐active compounds are still unclear. Characterizing the key aroma‐active compounds can provide a theoretical foundation for the practical aroma quality evaluation of Congou black tea and directional processing technology of high‐quality black tea with floral or sweet odors. Gas chromatography–olfactometry (GC‐O) combined with odor activity value (OAV) is often used to screen key aroma‐active substances, but the interaction between aroma components and their impact on the overall sensory quality is ignored. Therefore, in this study, OAV combined with variable importance in projection (VIP) and Spearman correlation analysis (SCA) were used to characterize the aroma‐active components of Congou black teas with floral and sweet odors. RESULTS: Eighty‐five volatiles were identified in these samples using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC‐MS). Twenty‐three compounds were identified as potential markers for the floral and sweet odors of Congou black teas from orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (OPLS‐DA). Eighteen compounds were selected as candidate aroma compounds based on GC‐O analysis and OAV calculations. In addition, 26 compounds were screened as crucial aroma compounds based on SCA. Finally, 19 compounds were evaluated as key aroma compounds by the comprehensive evaluation of VIP, OAV, and SCA. Terpenoids are the main active compounds that contribute to the floral odor of Congou black tea, whereas aldehydes are the key compounds for the sweet odor. This paper applies near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and multiple chemometrics to efficiently distinguish the origins of fresh tea leaves. The key components were obtained using the partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) method. PLS, synergy interval PLS (siPLS), principal component analysis (PCA), genetic algorithm (GA), and their combination methods were used to establish NIRS non-destructive discrimination models. Then, the practical application was examined using external samples. The study identified nine key components (variable importance for the projection (VIP) > 1): epigallocatechin, epicatechin, total sugar, water extracts, total catechins, gallocatechin gallate, tea polyphenols, gallocatechin, and epigallocatechin gallate. Of the six NIRS models, the siPLS-GA model that used 37 spectral data points produced the best results (Rp2 = 0.9706, RMSEP = 0.0772, RPD = 6.59). This model had a prediction accuracy of 96.67% for the prediction set samples and 93.33% for the external samples. It offers a rapid, precise, and non-invasive approach to monitor and regulate the illicit trade of fresh tea leaves, thereby guaranteeing the authenticity of Enshi Yulu products from the processing source and fostering the long-term prosperity and stability of the Enshi Yulu tea industry. • There is a limited amount of research on using NIRS to trace the origin of fresh tea leaves. • PLS-DA was used to identify the origins of fresh tea leaves based on nine key components. • The NIRS-siPLS-GA digital combination model exhibits high robustness and wide adaptability. • It is a low-cost modeling solution effectively addresses the authenticity problem of Enshi Yulu. • The research findings suggest broad application prospects. [Display omitted] To cope with the demand of more complex and variable applications, it is urgent to develop dual-mode triggered, breathable, and shape-memory wearable heaters for all-weather personal thermal management of composite phase change materials (PCMs). Herein, after high-temperature carbonization of ZnCo-MOF (metal–organic framework) nanosheet array grown in situ on flexible and breathable carbon cloth (CC) and subsequent encapsulation of polyethylene glycol (PEG), the as-prepared PEG/CC@Co/CNT (carbon nanotube) composite PCMs exhibited good breathability, mechanical strength (tensile strength of 9.15 MPa), thermal energy storage density (114.19 J/g), and shape memory due to the synergy of flexible CC skeleton and rigid PEG. More importantly, composite PCMs possessed excellent solar-thermal (93.7 %, 100 mW/cm2) and electro-thermals (94.5 %, 2.0 V) conversion and storage capacity, benefiting from the conjugation effect of high graphitized carbon/carbon heterostructure with fast electron/photon/phonon transmission and the localized surface plasmon resonance effect of Co nanoparticles. Therefore, the integration of solar heating and Joule heating into breathable composite PCMs can be accurately used for next-generation all-weather, all-season, dual-mode triggered personal thermal management, including indoor/outdoor, daytime/night, rainy/cloudy and other complex and changeable scenarios. The extraction of weak acoustic signals under strong background noise is of great significance in the applications of target identification and localization. In this paper, the pulse signal with high randomness is set as the weak signal sound source, random noise and sine sound are used as the background noise. Under the condition of a signal-to-noise ratio of −20 dB, combined with blind source separation and neural network methods, the collected observation signals are subjected to weak sound signal separation and recognition research. The optimization method of centralization and scaling processing is used to eliminate the unfavorable influence of the uncertainty of the separated signal amplitude caused by the blind source separation method on the pattern recognition. The recognition result is verified by the combination of "weak impulse acoustic signal" and "random noise signal," and the output vector (0.99 0.01 0.01) approaches (1 0 0), which is recognized as impulse acoustic signal. By combining blind source separation and neural network methods, the separation and identification of weak pulse signals under the condition of a signal-to-noise ratio of −20 dB can be achieved. Noise pollution is the most serious environmental pollution, which seriously affects people's normal life and physical and mental health, as well as normal production work. Therefore, noise control is necessary, but before noise control, the first thing to do is to identify the location of the noise source, and the noise control work is meaningless when the noise cannot be identified. Flat plate structures are a fundamental part of complex ship structures, and their vibration, noise, and their interrelationships when excited by the outside world are receiving increasing attention. The core of the research in this paper is the identification of the sound source of the vibrating plate. A method combining phase conjugation with interior boundary element method is developed for the identification of the pressure and normal velocity distribution of a vibrating plate. An interior problem is formed by enclosing the phase conjugation array plane and the plate surface. The pressures at the array elements are phase-conjugated as the specified pressure boundary condition. The impedance relationship between the surface pressure and the surface normal velocity of the plate is utilized as a specified impedance boundary condition. The interior boundary element method is applied to solve the interior problem. The identification of the surface pressure and normal velocity distribution is studied numerically. The numerical results show that with the array located in the near field the proposed method achieves subwavelength focusing to identify the surface pressure and normal velocity distribution and clearly shows the response shapes. As a new vegetation monitoring index, the KNDVI has certain advantages in characterizing the evolutionary process of regional desertification. However, there are few reports on desertification monitoring based on KNDVI and feature space models. In this study, seven feature parameters, including the kernel normalized difference vegetation index (KNDVI) and Albedo, were introduced to construct different models for desertification remote-sensing monitoring. The optimal desertification remote-sensing monitoring index model was determined with the measured data; then, the spatiotemporal evolution pattern of desertification in Gulang County from 2013 to 2023 was analyzed and revealed. The main conclusions were as follows: (1) Compared with the NDVI and MSAVI, the KNDVI showed more advantages in the characterization of the desertification evolution process. (2) The point–line pattern KNDVI-Albedo remote-sensing index model had the highest monitoring accuracy, reaching 94.93%, while the point–line pattern NDVI-TGSI remote-sensing monitoring index had the lowest accuracy of 54.38%. (3) From 2013 to 2023, the overall desertification situation in Gulang County showed a trend of improvement with a pattern of "firstly aggravation and then alleviation." Additionally, the gravity center of desertification in Gulang County first shifted to the southeast and then to the northeast, indicating that the northeast's aggravating rate of desertification was higher than in the southwest during the period. (4) From 2013 to 2023, the area of stable desertification in Gulang County was the largest, followed by the slightly weakened zone, and the most significant transition area was that of extreme desertification to severe desertification. In this study, the combination of octahedral Zn 2 SnO 4 with the carbon quantum dots (CQDs) is pioneered for the efficient detection of triethylamine. CQDs-modified Zn 2 SnO 4 materials were synthesized to perform rapid detection of trace triethylamine present in air. In the gas test, the optimal composite's response value to triethylamine is 600% higher than the value of the original Zn 2 SnO 4 to triethylamine, and the tendency of selective to triethylamine is more than ten times than other kinds of gases and possesses a short response/recovery times of 18 s/29 s. The exceptional properties of the composite are attributed to the superb electron transport capacity brought by the modification of 5 nm carbon quantum dots. Revealing the pathways of electron transport within electrochemically active biofilms (EABs) is of great importance. Here, mixed-culture EABs are grown on three interdigitated microelectrode arrays (IDAs) with different gap widths of 10 μm, 20 μm and 50 μm and their conductances are determined. The maximum conductive current increases with the decrease of the gap width and charge transfer resistance obtained for the biofilm attaching on the electrode is 3–11 fold less than that for biofilm bridging gaps, suggesting high conductance of biofilm closer to the electrode surface. Results from Raman analysis show high abundance of multi-heme cytochromes in biofilm bridging 10 μm gap, leading to small resistance of biofilm growing on the IDA with 10 μm gap. In addition, the maximum conductive current of biofilm bridging gaps at the potential of −0.40 V vs. Ag/AgCl suggests that electron transfer in biofilm growing on IDAs is redox driven. All these results indicate the spatial heterogeneity of electron transport processes acting within biofilm. Biofilm conductance decreased with the increase of gap's width. Small resistance was found for biofilm adjacent to the electrode surface. Biofilm conductance was depended the abundance of multi-heme cytochrome. • Crocetin attenuates oxidative stress, inflammation and apoptosis in the kidney. • Crocetin activates the expression of the PI3K/AKT pathway related genes. • Crocetin has a protective action on arsenic trioxide-induced nephrotoxicity. Arsenic trioxide (ATO)-induced renal toxicity through oxidative stress and apoptosis restricts the therapeutic action of acute myelogenous leukemia. Crocetin (Crt) possesses antioxidant and antiapoptosis properties, and has certain renal protective effects, but it has not been reported that it has protective effect on renal injury caused by ATO. The current study explored the effects and mechanisms of Crt on kidney damage induced by ATO. Fifty Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into five groups. Adult rats were given Crt concurrently with ATO for 1 week. On the 8th day, rats were killed and blood and kidney tissues were collected. Histopathological changes were measured, and kidney tissues and serum were used to determine renal function and antioxidant enzyme activity. In addition, the protein expression levels of P-PI3K, PI3K, P-AKT, AKT, CytC, Bax, Bcl-2 and Caspase-3 were determined via western blot analysis. Results revealed ATO induced renal morphological alterations and activated serum BUN and CRE. Compared with the control group, ROS, MDA, IL-1β, TNF-α, protein carbonyls (PC), lipid hydroperoxides (LOOH) and arsenic concentration levels were found to be significantly increased and SOD, CAT, GSH-Px, GSH and total sulphydryl groups (TSH) levels were attenuated in the ATO group. Crt markedly reduced oxidative stress in ATO-induced nephrotoxicity. Further, ATO induced apoptosis by significantly enhancing CytC, Bax and Caspase-3 and inhibiting Bcl-2. Administration with Crt markedly improved the expression of apoptosis factor. Moreover, Crt treatment stimulated the expressions of P-PI3K, PI3K, P-AKT, AKT induced by ATO. This study indicates Crt could prevent renal injury caused by ATO through inhibiting oxidative stress, inflammation and apoptosis, and its mechanism may be related to activation of PI3K/Akt signaling pathway. New capillaries are essential for deep tissue pressure injury wound healing. Tazarotene is a recently discovered small molecule drug and functions to promote neovascularization and tissue repair. At present, the application of tazarotene in the repair of pressure injuries has not previously been investigated. This study used poly (lactic- co -glycolic acid) (PLGA) as nanoparticle carriers loaded with tazarotene (Ta/PLGA NPs) for drug delivery and to overcome shortcomings associated with the low water solubility, short half-life, easy photolysis and low bioavailability of tazarotene itself. The physicochemical properties, drug release and bioactivity of Ta/PLGA NPs were examined in vitro by transmission electron microscope, spectrophotometry and cell assays. Mouse models of deep tissue pressure injuries (DTPI) were established and the therapeutic effects and mechanisms of Ta/PLGA NPs in local wound repair were studied. The results showed that Ta/PLGA NPs were of uniform size and distribution and were non-toxic both in vitro and in vivo. In vivo experiments suggested that Ta/PLGA NPs significantly promoted DTPI wound repair through activation of the VEGF/VEGFR-Notch1/DLL4 signaling pathway. This study highlights the potential clinical significance of implementation of tazarotene small molecule drugs in combination with effective biomaterial carriers for the treatment of chronic refractory wounds, such as DTPI. • The sustained release of Ta/PLGA NPs were successfully prepared by using the emulsification-volatiliztion method. • Ta/PLGA NPs accelerated wound healing of DTPI through activation of the VEGF-Notch signaling pathway. Currently, numerous studies are devoted to the pursuit of thermal conductivity enhancement of phase change materials (PCMs). On the contrary, few researches are reported to reduce the thermal conductivity of PCMs. Generally, the PCMs with reduced thermal conductivity have great potential in thermal protection application. Herein, we propose a novel in situ one-step strategy to facilely prepare monolithic silica aerogel-based composite PCMs. The silica aerogels possess low thermal conductivity and are used to encapsulate PCMs to prepare composite PCMs, such as polyethylene glycol (PEG) or octadecanol. Compare with PEG2000@silica aerogel, the resulting monolithic octadecanol@silica aerogel have low thermal conductivity (0.12 W m−1 K−1), high latent heat (127.73 J/g), large compressive strength (11 MPa), good hydrophobicity (contact angle 124°) and superior thermal cycling stability. This monolithic silica aerogel-based composite PCMs could prolong heat preservation duration due to the synergistic effect between low thermal conductivity and high latent heat of composite PCMs, showing potential promise for direct application to the thermal insulation and thermal protection device. High sensitivity is essential for the application of bioelectrochemical system-based sensor (BES sensor) in water quality early-warning, where the electroactive biofilm is of vital importance as it delivers a responsive electric signal to toxic substances. This study artificially designed the morphology of a naturally formed biofilm by employing a serrated knife to scrape the biofilm and thus obtained a reduced thickness and roughness. Then it was further cut by half to halve the biomass. BES sensors equipped with control and processed biofilms were operated under constant anode potential (CAP) and tested at different Cu(II) concentrations to study their sensitivities. Results revealed that the scraped biofilms delivered much increased sensitivity towards Cu(II) shock, which was attributed to a reduced thickness as illustrated by macroscopic and microscopic morphology analysis. Another finding was that biomass per unit interfacial area, rather than the biomass, also affected the sensitivity. To further describe how the inner biofilm responded the toxicity after morphology design, a one-dimension mass transfer model was developed to simulate the mass transfer of Cu(II) in the biofilms with different thicknesses. The relative threshold value of inlet Cu(II) concentration was employed to fit the modeling and experimental results, indicating that decreased biofilm thickness was beneficial for improving the sensitivity. Lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) is the main component of oxidatively damaged low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL). LPC originates from the cleavage of phosphatidylcholine by phospholipase A2 (PLA2). LPC plays a biological role by binding to G protein-coupled receptors and Toll-like receptors. LPC can induce the migration of lymphocytes and macrophages, increase the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, induce oxidative stress, and promote apoptosis, which can aggregate inflammation and promote the development of diseases. The effects of LPC on endothelial cells, vascular smooth muscle cells and arteries play a vital role in the progression of atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular diseases. In addition, the regulation of inflammation by LPC plays different roles in inflammatory and infectious diseases. In diabetes, LPC can induce insulin resistance. On the other hand, it can decrease blood glucose. The concentration of LPC varies in different tumours. LPC plays an important role in the invasion, metastasis and prognosis of tumours. Therefore, targeting LPC and lipid metabolism might be a potential therapeutic method for inflammation-related diseases. The effect of LPC on cells LPC can exert its biological function by activating ion channels, increasing the release of inflammatory factors and the expression of adhesion molecule, inducing apoptosis and oxidative stress. LPC can induce intracellular calcium mobilization via increasing external Ca(2+) influx and Ca(2+) release from endoplasmic reticulum Ca(2+) stores. Besides, LPC can affect the concentration of intracellular Na(+) and K(+), affecting the normal physiological function of cells. Importantly, LPC can bind to G protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) and Toll-like receptors (TLRs), activate transcription factors, stable mRNA and then increase the expression of target genes through Ca(2+)-mediated second messenger or directly inducing downstream inflammatory signalling pathways, which could increase the release of inflammatory factors, or induce the expression of adhesion molecules. In addition, there are many mechanisms by which LPC induces apoptosis, such as caspase activation, calcium influx, the release of cytochrome C, and the mitochondrial pathway. Therefore, LPC plays a variety of biological functions in cells, so targeting LPC may be a potential method for the treatment of inflammation-related diseases. Advancing the application of bioelectrochemical systems necessitates the comprehensive understanding of electron transfer process in electrode-associated biofilm. While in situ electrical measurement by using the split electrode can illustrate the electron conduction in biofilm, the accuracy and interpretation of the obtained data is still in debate. Here, conductance of Geobacter sulfurreducens biofilm is measured by using the split electrode as substrate concentration is changed. Biofilm conductance decreases with the current production as the consumption of substrate. In addition, the measured conductance increases with the area of drain electrode (13.8 ± 1.8 μS for 0.5 cm2 and 29.4 ± 4.2 μS for 1 cm2). These results suggest the measured conductance of biofilm is influenced by microbial metabolism. This effect will diminish when the measurement is performed by using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy or under non-turnover condition. • The effect of gap width on biofilm conductivity was investigated. • Higher conductivity was observed for biofilm bridging on larger gaps. • Redox-driven EET was found for biofilms bridging gaps with different width. • Metabolic activity controls biofilm conductance. To understand electron transport in electrochemically active biofilms, it is necessary to elucidate the heterogeneous electron transport across the biofilm/electrode interface and in the interior of G. sulfurreducens biofilms bridging gaps of varying widths. The conductivity of Geobacter sulfurreducens biofilm bridging nonconductive gaps with widths of 5 µm, 10 µm, 20 µm and 50 µm is investigated. Results of electrochemical gating measurement show that biofilm conductivity peaks at the potential of −0.35 V vs. Ag/AgCl. The biofilm conductivity increases with gap width (10.4 ± 0.2 µS cm−1 in 5 µm gap, 13.3 ± 0.2 µS cm−1 in 10 µm gap, 16.7 ± 1.4 µS cm−1 in 20 µm gap and 41.8 ± 2.02 µS cm−1 in 50 µm gap). These results revealed that electron transfer in G. sulfurreducens biofilm is a redox-driven. In addition, higher biofilm conductivities and lower charge transfer resistances are observed in all gaps under a turnover condition than in those under a non-turnover condition. Sulfur autotrophic denitrification has been proved feasible for nitrate removal from aquatic environments and it utilizes elemental sulfur as the electron donor. A maximum denitrification rate of 194.57 mg N/L·d was achieved with biogenic sulfur as electron donor in a mixed culture collected from sulfur packed bed reactors; this rate was considerably higher than that delivered by α-S 8 or μ-S in the same mixed culture. The elemental sulfur was also tested in the pure culture of Thiobacillus denitrificans , while a lower denitrification rate was noted than in the mixed culture, bio-S (4.86 mg N/L·d) again outperformed other two elemental sulfur's. X-ray absorption near edge structure spectra were collected to examine possible metabolic intermediates during the sulfur autotrophic denitrification process. The analysis revealed the existence of two major intermediates: DL-cysteine and L-cystine. They were found to not only provide electrons but also play a critical role in promoting the elemental sulfur-mediated sulfur autotrophic denitrification process. In general, we investigated the formation and enhancement effects of sulfur intermediates in the sulfur autotrophic denitrification process. The development of real-time online warning system for toxicity materials is important to ensure the safety of water supply. This study for the first time constructs luminescent bacteria (Vibrio fischeri) biofilm to deliver both electrical and optical real-time response for Cu(II) toxic shock in a bioelectrochemical system (BES) sensor. Compared to biocathode, bioanode was more suitable as sensitive elements. With three tested concentrations of Cu(II), i.e., 1 mg/L, 3 mg/L and 6 mg/L, electrical signals were raised. But optical signal failed to respond to the lowest concentration, suggesting that electrical signal then was produced by chemical reaction of Cu(II) on the electrode surface. For 3 mg/L and 6 mg/L Cu(II) shock, more rapid optical signals were observed than electrical signal, indicating that both the biofilm's surface and inner was affected. In addition, high concentration of Cu(II) toxic as 6 mg/L caused irreversible damage in the biosensor as there were great fluctuation in the recovery curve and large recovery ratio up to -10.39% for optical signal. These results provided a comparison between optical and electrical signals simultaneously produced by a biosensor and visual evidences for better understanding of the toxicity process in the biosensor. 10‐Gingerol (10‐Gin), an active ingredient extracted from ginger, has been reported to have beneficial effects on the cardiovascular system. However, 10‐Gin has not been proved to offer protection against cardiomyocyte injury induced by hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R). This study aimed to investigate the protective effects of 10‐Gin against H/R‐induced injury and its potential mechanisms in cardiomyocytes. A H/R injury model of H9c2 cardiomyocytes was established using 600 μmol/L CoCl2 to induce hypoxia in the cells for 24 hr and then reoxygenated for 3 hr. 10‐Gin was pretreated with H9c2 cardiomyocytes for 24 hr to assess its cardiomyocyte protection. Our results showed that 10‐Gin improved the viability of H9c2 cardiomyocytes in the H/R model and decreased the activities of creatine kinase, lactate dehydrogenase, and the generation of reactive oxygen species. By intracellular Ca2+ ([Ca2+]i) fluorescence, we found that 10‐Gin could significantly reduce the [Ca2+]i concentration. 10‐Gin administration increased the activities of antioxidase and reduced malondialdehyde content and inflammatory cytokine levels. 10‐Gin also reduced the apoptosis levels. Importantly, 10‐Gin administration decreased the gene and protein expressions of Wnt5a and Frizzled‐2. In conclusion, 10‐Gin alleviates H/R‐induced cardiomyocyte injury, which is associated with the antioxidation, anti‐inflammation, antiapoptosis action, and reduction of [Ca2+]i overload by suppressing the Wnt5a/Frizzled‐2 pathway. • Childhood emotional neglect is a risk factor of adolescent depression. • Maladaptive self-cognition is a potential explanatory factor underlying this relation. • Friendship quality plays a moderating role, with the effect being stronger for adolescents with lower levels of friendship quality. It has become the responsibility of the whole society to protect adolescents from depression. Based on an integration of attachment theory and stress-buffering model, the present study aimed to examine (a) whether childhood emotional neglect (CEN) would be significantly associated with depression; (b) whether maladaptive self-cognition would mediate the association between CEN and depression; and (c) whether friendship quality would moderate the direct and indirect associations between CEN and depression via maladaptive self-cognition. Participants were 1639 Chinese adolescents (M age = 14.49 years, SD = 1.11). They completed questionnaires regarding demographics, CEN, maladaptive self-cognition, and friendship quality at Time 1. After 7 months, they finished the measure of depression at Time 2. Results showed that CEN was positively associated with adolescent depression, and this relation was mediated by maladaptive self-cognition. Furthermore, friendship quality moderated the association between CEN and maladaptive self-cognition, with the relation being stronger for adolescents with lower levels of friendship quality. However, friendship quality did not moderate the association between maladaptive self-cognition and depression, as well as the direct association between CEN and depression. How metal-support interaction (MSI) affects three-way catalysts (TWCs) performance has always been a focus. This work regulated the interaction between Rh and CeO 2 -ZrO 2 (CZ) by support pretreatment scheme, meanwhile deeply analyzed the effect on activity and stability. CZ after 1000 ℃ pretreatment weakened the MSI and made more active Rh on CZ surface, which significantly enhanced catalytic efficiency (C 3 H 8 T 90 decreased by 40 ℃). However, this weakened MSI prevented CZ from anchoring Rh, leading to the growth of Rh after aging and adversely affecting anti-aging ability (T 90 increased by 90 °C). Fortunately, when CZ pretreatment at 900 °C, the catalytic performance did not decrease after aging due to the retained strong MSI. In addition, the change of oxygen vacancy concentration caused by CZ pretreatment was positively correlated with MSI strength. This work provided an in-depth understanding for MSI and a new idea for Rh-based TWCs design by elucidating the correlation between MSI and TWCs performance. Some painted pottery figurines were excavated from the tomb of Qibi Ming of the Tang Dynasty. A series of analytical techniques were employed to understand the craftsmanship of these painted pottery figurines. The pigment, cross-section, adhesive, and firing temperature were analyzed using microscopy (OM), energy X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (EDX), micro-Raman spectroscopy, pyrolysis–gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS), and a dilatometer (DIL). The results demonstrated that the surface of the pigment layers had degraded to different degrees. The pigment particles were litharge, gypsum, malachite, cinnabar, hematite, minium, white lead, and carbon black. The cross-sectional images show that the painted layer of figurines 10-0966 and 10-0678 included a pigment layer and a preparation layer. The preparation layer of both pigments was lead white. Animal glue was used as an adhesive. The firing temperature of the pottery figurines was likely 1080 °C. This study can provide more accurate information with regard to the composition of the raw materials utilized in the making of these artifacts and support the selection of appropriate substances for the purposes of conservation and restoration of the painted pottery figurines. Background: Treatment options beyond the first-line setting for recurrent or metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma (RM-NPC) are limited. The role of the multitarget tyrosine kinase inhibitor anlotinib in RM-NPC is unclear. Methods: In this prospective, single-arm, phase 2 trial, patients with histologically confirmed RM-NPC and failure of at least two lines of prior systemic treatments were eligible. Anlotinib was given at 12 mg once daily on days 1–14 every 3 weeks until disease progression or intolerable toxicities. The primary end point was disease control rate, defined as the percentage of patients achieving complete response, partial response, or stable disease by RECIST criteria. Results: From April 2019 to March 2021, 39 patients were enrolled and received a median of 4 cycles (range, 0.5–20) of anlotinib treatment. Partial response and stable disease were observed in 8 and 20 patients, respectively. The disease control rate was 71.8%, and objective response rate was 20.5%. With a median follow-up of 17.2 months, the median progression-free survival was 5.7 months. The 12-month overall survival was 58.3%, and the median overall survival was not reached. The most frequent grade 3/4 treatment-related adverse events were hand-foot syndrome (23.7%), oral mucositis (21.0%), hypertension (7.9%), and triglyceride elevation (7.9%). Hemorrhage, all grade 1 or 2, occurred in 34.2% of the patients. Conclusions: Anlotinib monotherapy exhibited promising anti-tumor activities and disease control for heavily pretreated RM-NPC patients with a tolerable toxicity profile. A well-dispersed Ni nano electrocatalyst boosts the kinetics and decreases the reaction overpotential of Li 2 S 4 reduction, providing more spaces for the concentration difference overpotential and allowing more soluble polysulfide intermediates farther away (l 2) from the surface of conductive materials to be reduced based on Fick's first law, significantly improving the sulfur utilization. Consequently, excellent rate performance, high areal capacity, and stable cycle performance are exhibited. [Display omitted] The lithium-sulfur battery (Li-S) has been considered a promising energy storage system, however, in the practical application of Li-S batteries, considerable challenges remain. One challenge is the low kinetics involved in the conversion of Li 2 S 4 to Li 2 S. Here, we reveal that highly dispersed Ni nanoparticles play a unique role in the reduction of Li 2 S 4. Ni-porous carbon (Ni-PC) decorated in situ on a free-standing carbon nanotube sponge (CNTS/Ni-PC) enriches the current response of liquid phase Li 2 S 4 and Li 2 S 2 around the cathode more than 8.1 and 5.7 times higher than that of the CNTS blank sample, respectively, greatly boosting the kinetics and decreasing the reaction overpotential of Li 2 S 4 reduction (lower Tafel slope and larger current response). Thus, with the same total overpotential, more space is provided for the concentration difference overpotential, allowing the more soluble polysulfide intermediates farther away from the surface of the conductive materials to be reduced based on the "wane and wax" strategy, and significantly improving the sulfur utilization. Consequently, S@CNTS/Ni-PC delivers excellent rate performance (812.4 mAh·g−1 at 2C) and a remarkable areal capacity of 10.1 mAh·cm−2. Mosquitocidal Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) strain S2160-1 was proposed to be an alternative to Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. israelensis (Bti). Discovering and validating a toxic gene by experimentation was a complex and time-consuming task, which can benefit from high-throughput sequencing analysis. In this research, we predicted and identified toxic proteins in the strain S2160-1 based on the draft whole genome sequence data. Through a local BLASP, 46 putative toxins were identified in S2160-1 genome, by searching against a customized B. thuringiensis toxin proteins database containing 653 protein or peptide sequences retrieved from public accessible resources and PCR/clone results in our laboratory (e value = 1e − 5). These putative toxins consist of 42 to 1216 amino acids. The molecular weights are ranged from 4.86 to 137.28 kDa. The isoelectric point of these candidate toxins varied from 4.3 to 10.06, and 16 out of which had a pH greater than 7.0. The analysis of tertiary structure and PFAM domain showed that 12 potential plasmid toxins may share higher similarity (9/12 QMEAN4 score > 0.3) with known Bt toxins. In addition, functional annotation indicated that these 12 potential toxins were involved in “sporulation resulting in formation of a cellular spore” and “toxin activity”. Moreover, multiple alignment and phylogenetic analysis were carried out to elucidate the evolutionary relationship among 101 known crystal or toxin proteins from public database and them with MEGA 6.0. It indicated that PS2160P2_1 and PS2160P2_153 may be potential Cry4-like toxins in Bt S2160-1. Lipopeptides are important non-ribosomal peptide synthetases (NRPSs) products with broad therapeutic potential in biotechnology and biopharmaceutical applications. Fatty acyl modifications in N-terminal of lipopeptides have attracted wide interest in the engineering processes of altered fatty acyl selectivity. In this study, we focused on the starter condensation domain of antibiotic A54145 (lptC1) and its indiscriminate selectivity of fatty acyl substrates, which results in multi-component products. Using in silico analysis, five site-directed mutations at protein–protein interface were identified with altered activity and selectivity towards wild type lptC1. The variants Y149W and A330T exhibited changed substrate selectivity to prefer longer branched chain fatty acyl substrate, while T16A and A350D showed improved selectivity for shorter linear chain fatty acyl substrates. Subsequently, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were performed to analyze the impact of these residues on the changes of catalytic activity and conformation. Through in silico analysis, the altered binding free energy were coincident with the corresponding activity performance of the variants, and surface forces indicated that other factors or processes may influence the activity and selectivity. Moreover, the MD results revealed even altered active center conformations, implying the importance of these interface residues affected on distant active center thus reflected to catalysis activity. Based on the biochemistry and computational results, our work provides detailed insights from molecular and dynamics aspects into the role of C1's interface residues during complex NRPS biosynthesis machinery, prompting further rational engineering for lipopeptide catalysis. Sulfur autotrophic denitrification is a feasible option for nitrate removal from wastewater. Element sulfur (So) can be utilized as an electron donor to enhance denitrification processes, with So metabolism playing an important role. The general concern with the use of So as an electron donor is the conversion and transfer of So, since So hardly dissolves in water. The conversion of So and the transfer of intermediates in So-based biofilms was investigated by applying a negative potential in a denitrification reactor with a So-carbon black cathode. The nitrate reduction rate was greatly increased, while nitrite accumulation was limited. When the cathode was prepared with equal volumes of element sulfur and carbon black powder, the nitrogen removal rate could reach 1.03 ± 0.00 g/m2/d. Half-order rates still applied to the reactions with applied potential, indicating that So-based denitrification was the dominant process. Raman analysis and cyclic voltammetry experiments suggested that reduced sulfur species (S x 2−) were generated in a So-based biofilm with a negative potential, their transfer was stimulated, and the sulfur related bacterial community was enhanced. It could be concluded that applying a negative potential improved the conversion and transfer of sulfur species, and thereby promote So-based denitrification process. Conquering the trade-off between selectivity and permeability is crucial for efficient ethanol dehydration. The sophisticated metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have proven their potential as membrane fillers despite of the limited research on few frameworks. Herein, in order to achieve enhanced water permselectivity, hydrophilic zirconium-based NU-906 nanoparticles were incorporated into chitosan (CS) to fabricate NU-906/CS mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for alcohol dehydration. The introduction of NU-906 brought excellent water affinity and structural stability to the hybrid membranes confirmed by the water contact angle and swelling resistance tests. Benefiting from the hydrophilicity and the ordered porosity of the incorporated NU-906, simultaneously enhanced water selectivity and permeability have been achieved on the hybrid membranes. The optimum membrane with 5.0 wt% NU-906 exhibited a high flux of 1086 g/(m2·h) and an excellent separation factor of 2651 for 90 wt% ethanol dehydration at 76 ℃. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have exhibited great potential in the therapy of cardiovascular disease. However, the application of MSCs is hampered by apoptosis, which reduces the number of cells in the host cardiac microenvironment. Ulinastatin (UTI), a broad-spectrum protease inhibitor that can be purified from human urine, has attracted attention for its protective effects through its immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties. The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of UTI on serum deprivation-induced apoptosis of MSCs and investigate its molecular mechanisms. Cell viability was determined by the MTT assay. Apoptosis was assessed by flow cytometric analysis with Annexin V/propidium iodide staining. The protein levels of cleaved caspase-3, B-cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2) family proteins, total-Akt and phospho-Akt were evaluated by western blot. The results of the present study demonstrated that UTI exhibited a protective effect in serum deprived MSCs, as indicated by increased cell viability, and a reduction in the rate of apoptosis and caspase-3 activation. In addition, treatment with UTI significantly decreased the expression levels of Bcl-2, Bcl-extra large and Bcl-associated X protein. Furthermore, activation of the Akt signaling pathway was involved in the UTI-induced anti-apoptotic effects. The present findings indicated that UTI is able to promote the survival of MSCs under serum deprivation conditions. MTX in genetically distinctive Chinese psoriatic patients remains less explored. The present study aimed to determine the impact of HLA-Cw*06 on MTX response in a Chinese psoriasis patient population. A total of 204 patients with psoriasis were enrolled in this study. Clinical data and DNA samples from all patients were collected. The allele of HLA-Cw*06 genotyping was detected using direct Sanger sequencing. This study enrolled 204 patients with psoriasis, including 47 (23.04%) psoriatic arthritis patients, 157 (76.96%) patients free of psoriatic arthritis. Overall, 110 (53.92%) of all patients carried the HLA-Cw*06 allele. This frequency in patients with arthritis-free psoriasis was higher than that in those with psoriatic arthritis (58.59 vs. 38.30%, P = 0.014). After 8 weeks of MTX treatment, the arthritis-free psoriasis patients, who tested positive for the HLA-Cw*06 allele, showed significant improvement compared to those who tested negative (For PASI50, 78.57 vs. 55.22%, P = 0.02, and for PASI75, 51.11 vs. 34.33%, P = 0.036). The psoriatic arthritis-free patients who carried the HLA-Cw*06 allele in combination with the ABCB1 rs1045642 CC genotype showed the highest improvement. A regression model containing HLA-Cw*06, rs1045642T > C, and initial PASI scores was used to construct the efficacy prediction model of MTX, which yielded AUC values of 73.2 and 75.6% for PASI50 and PASI75 to MTX, respectively, in arthritis-free psoriasis patients. The HLA-Cw*06 allele is associated with optimal response to MTX treatment in arthritis-free Chinese psoriasis patients. [Display omitted] Advancing the practical application of catalytic oxidation technology demands for illustrating the synchronous conversion behavior of various volatile organic compounds (VOCs) over catalysts. Here, the mutual effects of benzene, toluene and xylene (BTX) were examined for their synchronous conversion on the surface of the MnO 2 nanowire. Competitive adsorption of xylene (absorption energy (E ads): −0.889 eV) facilitated its prior conversion and impeded the oxidization of toluene and benzene over the catalyst. The turnover frequencies were 0.52 min−1 (benzene), 0.90 min−1 (toluene) and 2.42 min−1 (xylene) for mixed BTX conversion over the MnO 2. Doping MnO 2 with K+, Na+ and Ca2+ could enhance its ability to oxidize the individual VOCs but did not alter the conversion mechanism of mixed BTX over the catalyst. When reducing the competitive effects in the adsorption of BTX, the oxidation performance of catalysts would depend on their ability to oxidize toluene and benzene. K-MnO 2 showed superior properties, i.e. specific surface area, highly low-valent Mn species, high lattice oxygen content, and abundant oxygen vacancy, and then exhibited superior performance during long-term operation (90% conversion in 800 min). The present study uncovered the co-conversion mechanism of multiple VOCs and significantly leveraged the catalytic oxidization technology for VOCs removal in practical application. The persulfate-based advanced oxidation process has been an effective method for refractory organic pollutants' degradation in aqueous phase. Herein, α-MnO2 with nanowire morphology was facially fabricated via a one-step hydrothermal method and successfully activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for Rhodamine B (RhB) degradation. Influencing factors, including the hydrothermal parameter, PMS concentration, α-MnO2 dosage, RhB concentration, initial pH, and anions, were systematically investigated. The corresponding reaction kinetics were further fitted by the pseudo-first-order kinetic. The RhB degradation mechanism via α-MnO2 activating PMS was proposed according to a series of quenching experiments and the UV-vis scanning spectrum. Results showed that α-MnO2 could effectively activate PMS to degrade RhB and has good repeatability. The catalytic RhB degradation reaction was accelerated by increasing the catalyst dosage and the PMS concentration. The effective RhB degradation performance can be attributed to the high content of surface hydroxyl groups and the greater reducibility of α-MnO2, and the contribution of different ROS (reactive oxygen species) was 1O2 > O 2 · − > SO 4 · − > ·OH. Impure ions in the precursor can cause the structural transition of prepared MnO 2 catalysts and influence their activity in toluene catalytic oxidation. Here, the effects of K+ and SO 4 2- on the catalytic activity of MnO 2 are examined. Removing absorbed SO 4 2- by repeating water washing facilitates the exposure of active sites on the surface of MnO 2. The temperature for toluene conversion reaches 90% (T 90) of catalysts decreases from 247 ºC to 238 ºC. While the loss of K+ during the water washing leads to the inferior performance of MnO 2. Re-impregnating of K+ can stimulate the generation of active oxygen species on the surface of catalysts (K/MnO 2), which showed elevated catalytic activity in toluene conversion (T 90 , 229 ºC). In addition, K/MnO 2 performs good stability for toluene combustion in long-term operation. Density Function Theory calculations reveal that the formation energy of oxygen vacancy and the adsorption energy of toluene on the surface of catalyst decrease from 6.996 eV and − 0.079 to 5.482 eV and − 0.468 eV as the introduction of K+, respectively. A polarization-insensitive 2 × 2 multimode interference coupler based on double strip silicon nitride waveguides is proposed and optimized by using the three-dimensional finite difference time domain method. By optimizing the device’s structure parameters in detail, polarization independent excess loss of −0.32dB is obtained, and negligible output uniformities of −0.02dB and −0.03dB could be achieved for the TE and TM mode, respectively. Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a hematological malignancy with rapid disease progression and often becomes lethal without treatment. Development of effective new therapies is essential to improve the clinical outcome of AML patients. Enhancer of zeste homolog 2 (EZH2) and lysine specific demethylase 1 (LSD1) play important roles in epigenetic regulation and their altered expressions have been observed in cancer. Although EZH2 and LSD1 have opposite histone methylation functions, we found that both enzymes were paradoxically up-regulated in AML cells. Importantly, a combined inhibition of EZH2 and LSD1 resulted in a synergistic activity against AML in vitro and in vivo. Such synergy was mechanistically correlated with up-regulation of H3K4me1/2 and H3K9Ac and down-regulation of H3K27me3, leading to a decrease of anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2. These epigenetic alterations also compromised the mitochondrial respiration capacity and glycolytic activity and resulted in ATP depletion, a key event contributing to the potent cytotoxic effect of the drug combination. Taken together, our work identified a novel therapeutic approach against AML by combining two small molecules that inhibit different histone methylation-modulating proteins with apparently opposite enzyme activities. The traditional microbial fuel cell (MFC) sensor with bioanode as sensing element delivers limited sensitivity to toxicity monitoring, restricted application to only anaerobic and organic rich water body, and increased potential fault warning to the combined shock of organic matter/toxicity. In this study, the biocathode for oxygen reduction reaction was employed for the first time as the sensing element in MFC sensor for toxicity monitoring. The results shown that the sensitivity of MFC sensor with biocathode sensing element (7.4±2.0 to 67.5±4.0 mA% −1 cm −2 ) was much greater than that showed by bioanode sensing element (3.4±1.5 to 5.5±0.7 mA% −1 cm −2 ). The biocathode sensing element achieved the lowest detection limit reported to date using MFC sensor for formaldehyde detection (0.0005%), while the bioanode was more applicable for higher concentration (>0.0025%). There was a quicker response of biocathode sensing element with the increase of conductivity and dissolved oxygen (DO). The biocathode sensing element made the MFC sensor directly applied to clean water body monitoring, e.g., drinking water and reclaimed water, without the amending of background organic matter, and it also decreased the warning failure when challenged by a combined shock of organic matter/toxicity.
