Despite extensive studies has been explored on single‐molecule switches and rectifiers, the design of single‐molecule inductors has not been explored due to the experimental challenges in the investigation of frequency‐dependent charge transport at the single‐molecule scale. In this study, we synthesized a helicene‐based helical molecular wire and carried out meticulous single‐molecule conductance measurements, combined with current–voltage (IV) studies with varying frequencies using the scanning tunneling microscope break junction (STM‐BJ) technique. Our results reveal the formation of a single‐molecule junction and highlight the unique behavior of the molecular wire in response to different alternating current (AC) varying frequencies. The transport of charges occurs selectively either through the coiled backbone of the conjugated helical structure or vertically via π–π stacking, depending on the frequency of the applied AC. Notably, our investigation demonstrates the functionality of the wire as an inductor at low frequencies, and a capacitor at high frequencies. This work lays the foundation for a systematic approach to designing, fabricating, and implementing single‐molecule logic devices such as inductors and wave filters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Comprehensive Summary: Investigating the quantum interference effect in single molecules is essential to comprehensively understand the underlying mechanism of single‐molecule charge transport. In this study, we employed the mother molecule m‐OPE and introduced a series of side groups with various electronic effects at the 2‐position of the central phenyl ring, creating four daughter m‐OPE derivatives. The single molecular conductivities of these molecule wires were measured using the scanning tunneling microscope breaking junction technique. Our findings demonstrate that the substitutions regularly modulate the destructive quantum interference occurring within the m‐OPE molecules. By combining optical and electrochemical investigations, along with density functional theory computations, we discover that the conductivity of the molecules corresponds to the electron‐donating/withdrawing ability of the substituents. Specifically, by adjusting the electron structures of the molecular backbone, we can systematically tailor the destructive quantum interference in the m‐OPE molecules. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper describes syntheses, photophysical properties, and electrochemical characteristics of three thieno[3,4- b ]thiophene (TT)-based quinoidal oligomers OnTTO. The rigid planar backbones of these oligomers give the molecules narrow absorption bands, and the main absorption bands were significantly red-shifted when the TT units were extended and demonstrated wide transparent windows. The compound O4TTO was found to possess strong absorption in the near-infrared (NIR) region approaching 1200 nm but remained transparent in the visible region. Electrochemical experiments have shown that the energy band gaps gradually narrow when the TT units are increased. Optical properties predicted by density functional theory calculations are in good agreement with the experimental optical results. These dye molecules could be promising candidates for future NIR photodetectors, filters, and bioimaging technologies.

To guide the choice of future synthetic targets for single-molecule electronics, qualitative design rules are needed, which describe the effect of modifying chemical structure. Here the effect of heteroatom substitution on destructive quantum interference (QI) in single-molecule junctions is, for the first time experimentally addressed by investigating the conductance change when a "parent" meta-phenylene ethylene-type oligomer (m-OPE) is modified to yield a "daughter" by inserting one nitrogen atom into the m-OPE core. We find that if the substituted nitrogen is in a meta position relative to both acetylene linkers, the daughter conductance remains as low as the parent. However, if the substituted nitrogen is in an ortho position relative to one acetylene linker and a para position relative to the other, destructive QI is alleviated and the daughter conductance is high. This behavior contrasts with that of a para-connected parent, whose conductance is unaffected by heteroatom substitution. These experimental findings are rationalized by transport calculations and also agree with recent "magic ratio rules", which capture the role of connectivity in determining the electrical conductance of such parents and daughters., (© 2017 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
