Abstract

Feedhorn- and orthomode transducer- (OMT) coupled transition edge sensor (TES) bolometers have been designed and micro-fabricated to meet the optical specifications of the LiteBIRD high frequency telescope (HFT) focal plane. We discuss the design and optical characterization of two LiteBIRD HFT detector types: dual-polarization, dual-frequency-band pixels with 195/280 GHz and 235/337 GHz band centers. Results show well-matched passbands between orthogonal polarization channels and frequency centers within 3% of the design values. The optical efficiency of each frequency channel is conservatively reported to be within the range 0.64−0.72, determined from the response to a cryogenic, temperature-controlled thermal source. These values are in good agreement with expectations and either exceed or are within 10% of the values used in the LiteBIRD sensitivity forecast. Lastly, we report a measurement of loss in Nb/SiNx/Nb microstrip at 100 mK and over the frequency range 200–350 GHz, which is comparable to values previously reported in the literature

Abstract

A study was conducted to assess the socioeconomic details and food consumption pattern of school children in a rural community. A total of 100 children in the age group of 10-12 years in Ernakulam district of Kerala was selected using simple random sampling. Interview method with the help of structured and pretested schedule was used to collect the data. The frequency of consumption of different foods was assessed using a food frequency questionnaire. The findings revealed high consumption of rice, milk & milk products, sugar & jaggery, fats & edible oils, medium consumption of vegetables & non vegetarian items, and low consumption of pulses, nuts, oil seeds & fruits. This indicates the poor socioeconomic status prevailing in the area under study.

Abstract

Introduction. Hypokalemia is common in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD). It is associated with increased cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. Treatment usually includes oral potassium supplements, which are poorly tolerated. Our aim was to evaluate the prevalence of hypokalemia in PD patients in Qatar and to improve treatment measures. Methods. All PD patients in Qatar with persistent hypokalemia and on potassium supplement were included. We performed a root cause analysis, and a management pathway was created. We collected data before (Period 1) and after (Period 2) implementation of the new pathway. Results. A total of 143 patients with a mean age of 54 years (range 21–82 years) were included in the study. Initial results of Period 1 showed hypokalemia in 48 patients (34%); of these, 14 (29%) had hypomagnesemia. Hypokalemia resolved in 10 of the patients after correction of their hypomagnesemia. The remaining 4 patients continued to require potassium supplementation despite correction of their hypomagnesemia. We started spironolactone (25 mg daily) in 13 of the hypokalemia patients. After 3 months, their mean serum potassium level improved from 3.2 ± 0.3 mmol/L to 3.9 ± 0.4 mmol/L (p

Abstract

Internet traffic has been growing exponentially due to the increasing popularity of bandwidth-hungry applications among mobile and cloud platforms, as well as the increased penetration of broadband technologies. The advancements in fiber optic communication technology has enabled the scaling of data rates to very high bandwidths to support the increasing global data traffic growth. This has come at the cost of making the optical network infrastructure too rigid to changes in demand, difficult to service and maintain, and energy inefficient. The next-generation of optical networks needs to be more agile so that it can dynamically scale network resources based on demand, identify and locate impairments in the network automatically, be resilient to network disaster and cybersecurity attacks, and be more energy efficient. This necessitates the development of software-defined networking at the physical layer of optical networks with rapid optical performance monitoring capabilities to be able to dynamically modify the network and its parameters to ensure high quality of service and energy efficiency. Rapid optical performance monitoring requires high-throughput instruments that can analyze high-speed optical signals accurately with low power consumption. The increasing demand for higher data bandwidth is leading the communication industry to increase the operating frequency of components and systems. Performing accurate and rapid measurements of the various characteristics of electronic, electro-optic, and opto-electronic devices, modules, and systems at these high bandwidths is very challenging. With increasing operating frequencies, the conventional test equipment cost, size and power consumption also scales up proportionately. Longer test times to achieve increased accuracy would result in significantly higher test costs, hence innovations in faster testing of high bandwidth components and systems is a breakthrough that the test engineering community is anxiously awaiting for. Electronic digitizers are an integral part of modern digital instrumentation systems. The resolution and speed limits of analog-to-digital converters presents the bottleneck in the development of high-throughput, high bandwidth instruments. Photonic time-stretch technology boosts effective bandwidth and sampling rate of the conventional electronic digitizers by 50 to 100 times by slowing down the high bandwidth signals prior to digitization and signal processing. Time-stretch technology is a fundamentally different approach to broadband digitization technology. Instead of increasing the speed of back-end analog-to-digital converters and digital signal processors to keep up with ever accelerating data rates, time-stretch slows down incoming signals before digitization, reducing the analog bandwidth of the signal. By employing this technique, lower speed, higher resolution, more energy efficient digitizers and signal processors can be used to capture and process full wide-band signals in real-time. In addition, the time-stretch architecture scales with digitizer and signal processor technology, continually improving in resolution, speed, and energy efficiency as the electronic back-end technology progresses. In the first part of this dissertation, I discuss my work in the development of a novel photonic time-stretch accelerated processor for in-service, real-time burst-mode optical performance monitoring to enable the implementation of agile optical networks. This instrumentwith an equivalent 2 Terabit/s burst mode processing capability measures the bit-error rate, an important metric for the quality of transmission, of 40 Gigabit/s data with a 28 microsecond acquisition time. With a low power consumption of 50 W, this instrument has a real-time burst sampling throughput of 250 Giga-samples/s using an electronic digitizer with only 2.5 Giga-samples/s sampling rate at 2 GHz analog bandwidth. The measured bit-error rate is transmitted as a feedback to the software-defined networking controller to automatically take corrective actions in case of impairments or network disasters. I also discuss the various demonstrations using this instrument such as in-service analysis of streaming video packets at 10 Gigabit/s on a commercial optical networking platform, characterization of various non-linear effects in optical fiber networks, and an ultra-fast instantaneous frequency measurement system. In the second part of this dissertation, I discuss the development of an innovative high-performance single-shot network analyzer employing photonic time-stretch for extremely fast frequency response measurement of high bandwidth electronic, opto-electronic, and electro-optic devices, modules, and systems. This single-shot network analyzer has an effective sampling throughput of 2.5 Tera-samples/s at 40 GHz analog bandwidth. This instrument also features an extremely fast acquisition time of 27 nanosecond, a measurement jitter of 5.4 femtosecond, and power consumption of 50 W.

Abstract

Kalamiella piersonii is a newly identified bacterial species, firstly isolated from surfaces of the International Space Station (ISS). It also appears as a novel human pathogen reported to be implicated in bacteremia and kidney stone disease. Here, we report the first complete genome of a multidrug resistant (MDR) strain of K.piersonii (GABEKP28) isolated from the saliva of a patient with treatment resistant schizophrenia, in order to determine the mobile genetic elements, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and virulence factors (VFs) harbored by such a strain of this novel species.Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) was performed using DNABSEQ (PE150) and Nanopore MinION platforms. Hybrid assembly was conducted using Unicycler v0.5.0. Genome assembly quality was verified using QUAST v5.0.2. The assembly was annotated using PROKKA v1.14.5. ARGs and VFs were identifies using Abricate v1.0.0 RESULTS: : K.piersonii GABEKP28 was classified as MDR while also carrying plasmidic genetic determinants associated with a hypervirulent phenotype. The complete genome size is 3 881 479 bp and has GC content of 57.76% while it encodes for 3 525 CDS. The strain was also identified to carry three plasmids of 513 647 bp, 261 771 bp, 106 029 bp respectively.K.piersonii GABEKP28 is the first complete genome of this species to be submitted to GenBank, and only the second from a human host to be sequenced. The WGS data with multiple plasmids, ARGs and VFs will aid in understanding the pathogenicity, evolution and phylogeny of this novel opportunistic pathogen.

Escherichia colisequence type (ST) 127 is a pandemic lineage that belongs to the extraintestial pathogenic (ExPEC) family, mainly associated with urinary tract infections and bloodstream infections. Here, we report the complete genome of an E. coliST 127 isolate which was identified in the saliva of a patient with treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS) exhibiting no signs of infection. The objective of this work is to determine the mobile genetic elements (MGEs), antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), and virulence factors (VFs) that contribute to the pathogenicity of such ST127 isolates.

Abstract

The prevalence of neurological diseases is increasing too rapidly in ageing population in world. In traditional practice of medicine of natural products has been reported to treat neurological disorders. Para-coumaric acid is a hydroxycinnamic acid and reported for various pharmacological activities such as anti-oxidant, anti-microbial, anti-cancer, anti-ulcer and anti-inflammatory effects. But clinical application of para-coumaric acid is limited due to its poor dissolution rate. Polymeric nanoparticles have been reported for targeted drug delivery system. With this information, our study focused to formulate para-coumaric acid loaded chitosan nanoparticles in order to evaluate its neuroprotective potential against neuroblastoma (SH-SY5Y) cell line. Different formulations (F1, F2, F3) of Para-coumaric acid loaded chitosan nanoparticles (PCA-NPs) was prepared by simple ionic cross-linking method. Formulated PCA-NPs were subjected to characterization methods such as SEM analysis, Drug loading and Entrapment efficiency, in-vitro drug release and Stability studies. The in vitro cyto-toxicity assay of formulated PCA-NPs was performed against neuroblastoma (SH-SY5Y) cell line. This study indicated that F2-formulationof PCA-NPs showed improved dissolution rate of drug and considerable neuro-protective activity against neuroblastoma (SH-SY5Y) cell line in a dose-dependent manner. Thus, the study concluded that nanoparticle formulation could be suitable for targeted drug delivery system against neurological disorder.

Abstract

The wireless sensor node consumes maximum energy for data communication which calls for highly directive beams for point to point communication applications to reduce its energy consumption in a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). This paper presents the synthesis of a wideband beamformer, which is highly directive with reduced sidelobe level (SLL). It supports wide-angle beam steering which makes it suitable for Uniform Linear Array (ULA) WSN. An expression is obtained for weighting the array factor (AF) of the wideband beamformer to achieve beampattern model with desired SLL and Half Power Beam-Width (HPBW) specifications. Compared to Taylor and DPSS techniques, the proposed beamformer shows higher directivity for a given number of elements. It has lower and tapered sidelobes, hence better First Null to Last Null (FNLN) ratio. The proposed beamformer shows improved performance in wideband of interest i.e. 1-3GHz and basically, it is a non-optimization approach.

Abstract

The present work demonstrates the improvement in the pseudocapacitive performance of Cobalt (1, 3, and 5 wt%) doped Tungsten oxide (WO3) nanoparticles synthesized by the microwave irradiation method. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectra analysis indicate the successful doping of Co in the WO3 crystal matrix. Meanwhile, Co doping influences the surface morphology of pure WO3 by forming more smaller particles with elongation in the long axis. The specific surface area of WO3 (125.32m2 g−1) is increased by two times after doping of Co in WO3 (232.1 m2 g−1). Moreover, the electrochemical performance of 5 wt% Co doped WO3 is improved by five times higher than pristine WO3, ascribed to its high surface area and porosity. Also, it achieves the highest specific capacitance (517 F g−1) and energy density (14.55 Wh kg−1) at 1 A g−1 current density. The synergetic effect of the change in surface area and increased porosity due to doping of Co shows the enhancement in the electrochemical performance of WO3. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background: Hamad General Hospital is the main provider of hemodialysis (HD) in Qatar, for approximately 650 patients per year. Over 60% of these patients have Diabetes Mellitus (DM) and 55% of them suffer from end stage renal disease (ESRD). 2% of ESRD patients develop DM after their first year of dialysis1. The aims of this quality improvement study were early DM detection, risk factors modifications, and reduction of diabetes complications in our patients. Methods: A risk assessment tool was adapted to identify the risk level of HD patients to develop DM2. They were screened to determine their risk score across 8 categories. Six categories (gender, history of gestational diabetes, family history of high blood pressure, diabetes, physical activity and smoking) were scored 0 to 1, age was scored 0 to 3, and relationship between weight and height scored 1 to 3. (Overall score range: 1-12). Patients were classified into two groups: a low-risk group (score 60 years (32%), low physical activity (14%), and smoking (11%) (Figure 1). Thirty-seven percent of patients were referred to the obesity clinic, 10% to the smoking cessation clinic, 5% to physiotherapy, and 100% of patients were referred to the multidisciplinary care (Figure 2). Conclusion: Screening for diabetes is pivotal for early detection and risk factor modification in dialysis patients. We recommend quarterly data assessment and evaluation so patients can be managed according to the findings.

95. Molecular identification of caprine carriers of theileriosis in South India

Abstract

The rising prevalence of tick borne parasites and their economic impact on livestock production have often demanded better diagnostic tools and timely treatment options. The paper reports the molecular evidence of natural infections of Theileria ovis, T. lestoquardi and T. luwenshuni among goats in Kerala, south India, using PCR and RFLP. Concurrent infection of T. ovis and T. luwenshuni was also identified. Out of 150 samples studied, the PCR protocol was also found to detect a higher prevalence (59.3%) of theileriosis when compared to the detection of piroplasms (30%) in stained blood smears. In this study, the majority of goats were infected with T. ovis (75.28%), followed by those with T. luwenshuni (32.58%) and T. lestoquardi (7.86%). A high proportion of infected goats did not show any clinical signs indicating carrier status of infection. The carrier status of animals also signals the possible risk of disease transmission to healthy stock. However, a high incidence of caprine theileriosis, with significant haematological alterations including macrocytic hypochromic anaemia and thrombocytopenia, poses a potential threat to the goat population in the event of stress. Routine monitoring should be employed in farms for early detection and treatment of carrier animals., Rastuća prevalencija parazita koje prenose krpelji i njihov utjecaj na profitabilnost stočarske proizvodnje često su zahtijevali pouzdanije dijagnostičke alate i pravodobne načine liječenja. U ovom je radu prikazana molekularna identifikacija PCR-om i RFLP-om prirodnih invazija koza oblićima Theileria ovis, T. lestoquardi i T. Luwenshuni u Kerali u južnoj Indiji. Od 150 uzoraka analiziranih PCR-om utvrđena je viša prevalencija tajlerioze (59,3 %) u usporedbi s nalazom babezija (30 %) u obojenim krvnim razmazima. U ovom je istraživanju većina koza bila invadirana vrstom T. ovis (75,28 %), a zatim vrstama T. luwenshuni (32,58 %) i T. lestoquardi (7,86 %). Većina invadiranih koza nije pokazivala kliničke znakove tajlerioze. Također, supklinička invazija uputila je na potencijalni rizik prijenosa parazita na druge jedinke. Osim toga visoka incidencija tajlerioze u koza sa znakovitim promjenama u krvnim pokazateljima, uključujući makrocitnu hipokromnu anemiju i trombocitopeniju, potencijalna je prijetnja zdravlju koza u stresnim stanjima. Na farmama bi trebalo uvesti rutinsko praćenje radi ranog dokazivanja i liječenja latentno invadiranih životinja.

Abstract

The ligninolytic enzyme laccase has proved its potential for environmental applications. However, there is no documented industrial application of free laccase due to low stability, poor reusability, and high costs. Immobilization has been considered as a powerful technique to enhance laccase’s industrial potential. In this technology, appropriate support selection for laccase immobilization is a crucial step since the support could broadly affect the properties of the resulting catalyst system. Through the last decades, a large variety of inorganic, organic, and composite materials have been used in laccase immobilization. Among them, carbon-based materials have been explored as a support candidate for immobilization, due to their properties such as high porosity, high surface area, the existence of functional groups, and their highly aromatic structure. Carbon-based materials have also been used in culture media as supports, sources of nutrients, and inducers, for laccase production. This study aims to review the recent trends in laccase production, immobilization techniques, and essential support properties for enzyme immobilization. More specifically, this review analyzes and presents the significant benefits of carbon-based materials for their key role in laccase production and immobilization.
