Omega-3 (n-3) fatty acids modulate epigenetic changes critical to genesis and differentiation of neural cells. Conversely, maternal protein-malnutrition can negatively modify these changes. This study investigated whether a low n-6/n-3 ratio in a maternal diet could favor histone-3 (H3) modifications, gene transcription and differentiation in the offspring neural cells even under protein-deficiency. Female rats fed a control (Ct), or 3 types of multideficient diets differing in protein levels or linoleic/alpha-linolenic fatty acid ratios (RBD, RBD-C, RBD-SO) from 30 days prior to mating and during pregnancy. Cerebral cortex tissue and cortical cultures of progeny embryonic neurons and postnatal astrocytes were analyzed. H3K9 acetylation and H3K27 or H3K4 di-methylation levels were assessed by flow cytometry and/or immunocytochemistry. In astrocyte cultures and cortical tissue, the GFAP protein levels were assessed. Glial derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) and leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) gene expression were evaluated in the cortical tissue. GFAP levels were similar in astrocytes of Ct, RBD and RBD-C, but 65% lower in RBD-SO group. Higher levels of H3K9Ac were found in the neurons and H3K4Me2 in the astrocytes of the RBD group. No intergroup difference in the cortical GDNF mRNA expression or the H3K27Me2 levels in astrocytes was detected. LIF mRNA levels were higher in the RDB (P=.002) or RBD-C (P=.004) groups than in the control. The findings indicate the importance of dietary n-3 availability for the brain, even under a protein-deficient condition, inducing Histone modifications and increasing LIF gene transcription, involved in neural cell differentiation and reactivity.

This article will focus on using the Time box in the classroom, which its technical features, what benefits this product will have for education in general and who can acquire this innovative product. Use of this system in lectures and presentations shows how technology has transformed the learning methods in academic life of the student and student and makes life easier for the educator, bringing interactive news to the daily academic. The use of arduino, which is nothing more than a free electronic hardware prototyping and single-board platform has been used in products and is a key part of the Time box. The use of laptops, phones and tablets is becoming more frequent in the classroom by the students. New technologies allow fast access to information and online interaction through social networks. Teachers also adopt the technology in favor of a more dynamic and interactive class and use the Time box, optimizes the time for each presentation students or academic lectures, suggesting a new way of presentation of papers and presentations. Teachers in turn be prepared to demonstrate understanding this new moment and make use of these new tools in their favor, prompting the student to seek information. Teachers also adopt some of these tools to add knowledge, give dynamic and contextualize their classes. The teacher has appropriate and new technologies has given content and teaching classes in everyday life. O uso deste sistema em palestras e apresenta����es mostra o quanto a tecnologia tem transformado os m��todos de aprendizado na vida acad��mica do aluno e aluna e facilita a vida do educador, trazendo uma novidade interativa para o cotidiano acad��mico. Os professores por sua vez demonstram estar preparados para entender esse novo momento e fazem uso dessas novas ferramentas a seu favor, instigando o aluno a buscar a informa����o. Os professores tamb��m adotam algumas dessas ferramentas para agregar conhecimento, dar din��mica e contextualizar suas aulas. Classification JEL: M1; M31; L83 O principal objetivo desta dissertação consiste em determinar o grau de compromisso (“engagement”) dos turistas com o turismo cultural em Lisboa. Para atingir o objetivo em causa, o presente estudo, parte de uma revisão literária e de estudos empíricos realizados anteriormente sobre o turismo cultural em Lisboa e sobre o conceito de “engagement”, bem como tópicos relacionados. Adicionalmente foi feita uma análise estatística para perceber o modo como os turistas se relacionam com os espaços culturais em Lisboa. Esta análise foi elaborada a partir da recolha de questionários, junto a diversos espaços culturais em Lisboa. A mesma permitiu testar as hipóteses de um modelo presente na dissertação. Depois de realizado todo o trabalho empírico, este estudo permitiu perceber que é fundamental que os turistas tenham um nível relativamente elevado de “engagement” com os espaços culturais, para que os mesmos passem uma imagem positiva dos mesmos, para outros indivíduos, o que levará, os segundos a também visitarem esses espaços, ou seja, o nível de “engagement” influência a frequência a espaços culturais. Outras conclusões foram igualmente retiradas, deste estudo e apresentadas na dissertação. Esta dissertação apresenta ainda sugestões e implicações para estudos futuros. The main objective of this work is to determine the degree of "engagement" of tourists with cultural tourism in Lisbon. To achieve the goal in question, this study, part of a literature review and empirical studies previously conducted on cultural tourism in Lisbon and on the concept of engagement, as well as related topics. In addition it made a statistical analysis to see how tourists relate to cultural venues in Lisbon. This analysis was drawn from the collection of questionnaires, along with various cultural spaces in Lisbon. The same has tested the hypotheses of this model in the dissertation. After performing all the empirical work, this study allowed us to realize that it is important that tourists have a relatively high level of "engagement" with cultural spaces, so that they pass a positive image of themselves to others, which will in the latter also visit these places, so, the level of "engagement" cultural influences the frequency space. Other findings were also taken, this study and presented in the dissertation. This thesis also presents suggestions and implications for future studies.

Background:Vascular remodeling, the dynamic dimensional change in face of stress, can assume different directions as well as magnitudes in atherosclerotic disease. Classical measurements rely on reference to segments at a distance, risking inappropriate comparison between dislike vessel portions.Objective:to explore a new method for quantifying vessel remodeling, based on the comparison between a given target segment and its inferred normal dimensions.Methods:Geometric parameters and plaque composition were determined in 67 patients using three-vessel intravascular ultrasound with virtual histology (IVUS-VH). Coronary vessel remodeling at cross-section (n = 27.639) and lesion (n = 618) levels was assessed using classical metrics and a novel analytic algorithm based on the fractional vessel remodeling index (FVRI), which quantifies the total change in arterial wall dimensions related to the estimated normal dimension of the vessel. A prediction model was built to estimate the normal dimension of the vessel for calculation of FVRI.Results:According to the new algorithm, “Ectatic” remodeling pattern was least common, “Complete compensatory” remodeling was present in approximately half of the instances, and “Negative” and “Incomplete compensatory” remodeling types were detected in the remaining. Compared to a traditional diagnostic scheme, FVRI-based classification seemed to better discriminate plaque composition by IVUS-VH.Conclusion:Quantitative assessment of coronary remodeling using target segment dimensions offers a promising approach to evaluate the vessel response to plaque growth/regression. Fundamento:O remodelamento vascular, alteração dimensional dinâmica frente ao estresse, pode assumir diferentes direções e magnitudes na doença aterosclerótica. As medidas clássicas baseiam-se em referências a distância do segmento-alvo, com risco de comparação inadequada pela seleção de porções vasculares indesejáveis.Objetivo:Explorar um novo método para quantificar remodelamento vascular, baseado na comparação entre um determinado segmento-alvo e suas dimensões normais inferidas.Métodos:Parâmetros geométricos e a composição da placa foram determinados em 67 pacientes usando-se ultrassom intravascular de três vasos com histologia virtual (IVUS-VH). Avaliou-se o remodelamento coronário ao nível da seção transversal (n = 27.639) e da lesão (n = 618) usando-se métrica clássica e um novo algoritmo analítico baseado no índice de remodelamento vascular fracionado (FVRI) que quantifica a alteração total nas dimensões da parede arterial em relação a dimensão normal estimada do vaso. Construiu-se um modelo preditivo para estimar a dimensão normal do vaso para calcular o FVRI.Resultados:De acordo com o novo algoritmo, o padrão de remodelamento “ectásico” foi o menos comum, o remodelamento “completo compensatório” foi observado em metade dos casos, e os tipos “negativo” e “incompleto compensatório” foram detectados nos restantes. Comparada ao esquema tradicional diagnóstico, a classificação baseada no FVRI pareceu melhor discriminar a composição da placa através de IVUS-VH.Conclusão:A análise quantitativa do remodelamento coronário utilizando dimensões do segmento-alvo oferece uma abordagem promissora para avaliar a resposta vascular ao crescimento e à regressão da placa.

Background: Stacking cross-sectional intravascular images permits three-dimensional rendering of endovascular implants, yet introduces between-frame uncertainties that limit characterization of device placement and the hemodynamic microenvironment. In a porcine coronary stent model, we demonstrate enhanced OCT reconstruction with preservation of between-frame features through fusion with angiography and a priori knowledge of stent design. Methods and Results: Strut positions were extracted from sequential OCT frames. Reconstruction with standard interpolation generated discontinuous stent structures. By computationally constraining interpolation to known stent skeletons fitted to 3D ‘clouds’ of OCT-Angio-derived struts, implant anatomy was resolved, accurately rendering features from implant diameter and curvature (n = 1 vessels, r2 = 0.91, 0.90, respectively) to individual strut-wall configurations (average displacement error ~15 μm). This framework facilitated hemodynamic simulation (n = 1 vessel), showing the critical importance of accurate anatomic rendering in characterizing both quantitative and basic qualitative flow patterns. Discontinuities with standard approaches systematically introduced noise and bias, poorly capturing regional flow effects. In contrast, the enhanced method preserved multi-scale (local strut to regional stent) flow interactions, demonstrating the impact of regional contexts in defining the hemodynamic consequence of local deployment errors. Conclusion: Fusion of planar angiography and knowledge of device design permits enhanced OCT image analysis of in situ tissue-device interactions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) guidance on the final volume of contrast agent used in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).To date, few approaches have been described to reduce the final dose of contrast agent in PCIs. We hypothesized that IVUS might serve as an alternative imaging tool to angiography in many steps during PCI, thereby reducing the use of iodine contrast.A total of 83 patients were randomized to angiography-guided PCI or IVUS-guided PCI; both groups were treated according to a pre-defined meticulous procedural strategy. The primary endpoint was the total volume contrast agent used during PCI. Patients were followed clinically for an average of 4 months.The median total volume of contrast was 64.5 ml (interquartile range [IQR]: 42.8 to 97.0 ml; minimum, 19 ml; maximum, 170 ml) in the angiography-guided group versus 20.0 ml (IQR: 12.5 to 30.0 ml; minimum, 3 ml; maximum, 54 ml) in the IVUS-guided group (p 0.001). Similarly, the median volume of contrast/creatinine clearance ratio was significantly lower among patients treated with IVUS-guided PCI (1.0 [IQR: 0.6 to 1.9] vs. 0.4 [IQR: 0.2 to 0.6, respectively; p 0.001). In-hospital and 4-month outcomes were not different between patients randomized to angiography-guided and IVUS-guided PCI.Thoughtful and extensive use of IVUS as the primary imaging tool to guide PCI is safe and markedly reduces the volume of iodine contrast compared with angiography-alone guidance. The use of IVUS should be considered for patients at high risk of contrast-induced acute kidney injury or volume overload undergoing coronary angioplasty. Doutoramento em Ciência e Engenharia dos Materiais Durante os processos industriais de enformação por deformação plástica desenvolvem-se, frequentemente, instabilidades plásticas que podem conduzir à localização da deformação plástica e, consequentemente, à rotura das peças. O presente trabalho teve como objectivo fundamental a análise dos mecanismos físicos das instabilidades plásticas em chapas de aço e de alumínio submetidas a deformações simples e complexas. As trajectórias simples investigadas foram a laminagem, a tracção uniaxial e o corte enquanto que as trajectórias complexas contemplaram os ensaios sequenciais de laminagem-tracção uniaxial e de laminagem-corte. Para cada ensaio foi avaliada a influência da evolução da estrutura de deslocações e da orientação cristalográfica dos grãos no comportamento mecânico dos materiais. Para o efeito, realizaram-se observações por microscopia electrónica de transmissão e determinaram-se as texturas cristalográficas por difracção de raios-X. Os resultados experimentais foram objecto de simulações numéricas utilizando o modelo policristalino viscoplástico auto-coerente. No caso da chapa de aço, verificou-se que as instabilidades plásticas estão directamente relacionadas com a evolução da estrutura de deslocações. Nomeadamente, em solicitações que envolvem alterações acentuadas da trajectória de deformação foi detectada a ocorrência de fenómenos de amaciamento transitórios ou permanentes resultantes da activação de sistemas de escorregamento latentes. Para a trajectória de deformação complexa laminagem-corte o mecanismo de instabilidade plástica encontra expressão no desenvolvimento de microbandas com deformação de corte associada. Na chapa de alumínio, o mecanismo de desenvolvimento de instabilidades plásticas durante a alteração da trajectória de deformação difere substancialmente do encontrado para a chapa de aço e tem origem na evolução da textura cristalográfica do material. Segundo os cálculos e medições experimentais efectuadas, a ocorrência de uma taxa de encruamento negativa durante a recarga está associada a uma diminuição gradual do valor do factor de Taylor. No âmbito do presente trabalho ficou demonstrada a adequação do modelo policristalino viscoplástico autocoerente ao estudo do comportamento mecânico dos materiais investigados. Sheet metal forming processes involve large strains and complex loading paths that promote plastic instabilities. The resulting flow localization alters the quality of the product and leads to expensive rejects. The objective of the present work was to analyse the physical mechanisms of plastic instabilities in steel and aluminum sheets deformed under simple and complex strain paths. Mainly, rolling, uniaxial tension and shear tests in different orientations were conducted. The influence of dislocation structures and crystallographic orientation of the grains on the mechanical behavior of the materials was investigated using transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques. Particular attention was paid for conditions of monotonic and cross loading. Numerical simulations of crystallographic texture evolution were performed using a selfconsistent viscoplastic model. For the low carbon steel, plastic instabilities are directly related to the evolution of the dislocation structures. Namely, during abrupt changes of strain path the material exhibits transient or permanent softening as a result of the activation of latent slip systems. In the case of the rolling-shear sequence, the mechanism of plastic instability gives rise to the development of microbands with associated shear. For the aluminum sheet, the appearance of plastic instabilities strongly depends on the evolution of the crystallographic texture. According to self-consistent calculations and experimental measurements, the occurrence of a negative work-hardening rate during the reloading is recorded only when the Taylor factor is decreasing. The present work showed that the self-consistent viscoplastic model is suitable for the analysis of mechanical behavior of steel and aluminum alloys.

Neste trabalho foi estudada a origem de dois tipos de defeitos que ocorriam em canecas de grés obtidas por prensagem isostática e monocozedura. Ambos os tipos de defeitos correspondiam a depressões localizadas e profundas na superfície do vidrado após a cozedura e ocorriam preferencialmente em peças produzidas com o vidrado BS. Verificou-se que a localização dos defeitos do tipo I coincidia com crateras na camada de vidrado geradas durante a etapa de vidragem. Pelo contrário, os defeitos do tipo II apenas eram visíveis após a cozedura das peças. O estudo envolveu a caracterização dos materiais utilizados no fabrico das canecas e um conjunto de ensaios que permitiram identificar a origem dos defeitos e propor ações corretivas para a sua mitigação. No caso dos defeitos do tipo I, os resultados obtidos permitiram concluir que as depressões resultavam da retenção de bolhas de ar durante a vidragem, devido a uma velocidade excessiva de formação da camada de vidrado. Por seu lado, os defeitos do tipo II estavam associados à presença de um resíduo resultante do esponjamento automático das peças. Em ambos os casos, a fusibilidade insuficiente do vidrado BS dificultava a retificação das depressões resultantes durante a etapa de cozedura. A eliminação praticamente completa dos defeitos foi conseguida através do ajuste das condições de vidragem (defeitos do tipo I) e das condições de operação do sistema de acabamento automático (defeitos do tipo II). In this work, the origin of two types of defects that occurred in stoneware mugs obtained by isostatic pressing and single firing was studied. Both types of defects corresponded to localized and deep depressions on the surface of the glaze after firing and occurred preferentially in pieces produced with the BS glaze. It was found that the location of type I defects coincided with craters in the glaze layer generated during the glazing step. By contrast, the type II defects were only visible after the pieces had been fired. The study involved the characterization of the materials used in the production of the mugs and a set of tests that made it possible to identify the origin of the defects and propose corrective actions for their mitigation. In the case of type I defects, the results obtained allowed to conclude that the depressions resulted from the air bubbles trapped during the glazing, due to an excessive speed of formation of the glaze layer. On the other hand, type II defects were associated to the presence of a residue resulting from the automatic sponging of the mugs. In both cases, the insufficient fusibility of the BS glaze made it difficult to rectify the resulting depressions during the firing step. The virtually complete elimination of defects was achieved by adjusting the glazing conditions (type I defects) and the operating conditions of the automatic finishing system (type II defects). Neste trabalho, desenvolvido sob a forma de estágio na empresa Esmalglass-Portugal, foi efetuada a síntese de pigmentos azuis através da calcinação de sílica, compostos de cobre e carbonato de bário (formulações CB) ou carbonato de cálcio (formulações EB). Foi também avaliada a estabilidade dos pigmentos obtidos quando adicionados a vidrados transparentes com composições diferentes e cozidos a 1100 ˚C (vidrado V1) e a 900 ˚C (vidrado V2). Para o efeito, depois de uma etapa prévia de caracterização dos materiais iniciais, as misturas foram calcinadas utilizando-se diferentes ciclos térmicos. Os materiais obtidos foram de seguida moídos e adicionados em diferentes proporções aos dois vidrados. Após a aplicação em substratos cerâmicos e cozedura, foram selecionadas as misturas que apresentavam a cor azul para a realização de testes adicionais que incluíram a medição da cor, ensaios de lixiviação e de resistência ao fendilhamento e ao ataque químico. Das misturas testadas, apenas a do pigmento EB8 (obtido a partir da calcinação a 950 ˚C durante 16 horas de SiO2, CuO e CaCO3 e NaOH,) com o vidrado V2 manteve a cor azul após a cozedura a 900 ˚C. No entanto, este pigmento apresentou uma ação corante inferior à exibida pelos compostos comerciais com cobalto e uma reduzida estabilidade a temperatura elevada (que restringe a sua utilização a processos de temperatura relativamente reduzida como, por exemplo, a decoração de 3º fogo). In this work, developed as an internship at the company Esmalglass-Portugal, the synthesis of blue pigments was carried out by calcination of silica, copper compounds and barium carbonate (CB formulations) or calcium carbonate (EB formulations). The stability of the pigments obtained when added to transparent glazes with different compositions and fired at 1100 ˚C (glaze V1) and 900 ˚C (glaze v2) was also evaluated. For this purpose, after a previous stage of characterization of the initial materials, the mixtures were calcined using different thermal cycles. The materials obtained were then ground and added in different proportions to the two glazes. After application to ceramic substrates and firing, the mixtures with blue color were selected for additional tests that included color measurement, leaching and resistance to cracking and chemical attack tests. From the tested mixtures, only the EB8 pigment (obtained from calcination at 950 C during 16 hours of SiO2, CuO and CaCO3 and NaOH) with the V2 glaze kept its blue color after firing at 900 ˚C. However, this pigment showed a lower coloring action than the commercial compounds with cobalt and a reduced stability at high temperature (which restricts its use to relatively low temperature processes such as the 3rd firing decoration).
