Abstract

Coupled quantum dots (QDs), usually referred to as artificial molecules, are important not only in exploring fundamental physics of coupled quantum objects, but also in realizing advanced QD devices. However, previous studies have been limited to artificial molecules with nonrelativistic fermions. Here, we show that relativistic artificial molecules can be realized when two circular graphene QDs are coupled to each other. Using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS), we observe the formation of bonding and antibonding states of the relativistic artificial molecule and directly visualize these states of the two coupled graphene QDs. The formation of the relativistic molecular states strongly alters distributions of massless Dirac fermions confined in the graphene QDs. Because of the relativistic nature of the molecular states, our experiment demonstrates that the degeneracy of different angular-momentum states in the relativistic artificial molecule can be further lifted by external magnetic fields. Then, both the bonding and antibonding states are split into two peaks.

Abstract

In order to study the influence of hydrogen environment on the initiation and propagation of fatigue cracks in duplex stainless steel and establish the correlation mechanism between the fatigue strain microstructure evolution and hydrogen induced cracking in hydrogen environment，slow strain rate tensile and fatigue crack growth rate tests were carried out on 2205 duplex stainless steel specimens in 5 MPa hydrogen and 5 MPa nitrogen environments.Results showed that the hydrogen embrittlement sensitivity of 2205 duplex stainless steel was not high in the process of slow strain rate tensile in hydrogen environment，while it was significant during the fatigue process.The fatigue crack growth rate of 2205 duplex stainless steel in a hydrogen environment of 5 MPa was 18 times higher than that in a nitrogen environment.Hydrogen could promote local plastic deformation around the fatigue crack tip of 2205 duplex stainless steel and further led to hydrogen-induced cracking.In the process of fatigue deformation of 2205 duplex stainless steel in a hydrogen environment，different phase structures had different hydrogen-induced cracking mechanisms.The ferrite phase was easy to form a river-like pattern fracture morphology (cleavage fracture)，while the austenite phase fracture appearance mostly presented the characteristics of parallel slip bands.Austenite phase hindered cracks during the cleavage and cracking process of the ferrite phase.

Abstract

It is of keen interest to researchers understanding different approaches to confine massless Dirac fermions in graphene, which is also a central problem in making electronic devices based on graphene. Here, we studied spatial confinement, magnetic localization and their interactions on massless Dirac fermions in an angled graphene wedge formed by two linear graphene p-n boundaries with an angle 34. Using scanning tunneling microscopy, we visualized quasibound states temporarily confined in the studied graphene wedge. Large perpendicular magnetic fields condensed the massless Dirac fermions in the graphene wedge into Landau levels (LLs). The spatial confinement of the wedge affects the Landau quantization, which enables us to experimentally measure the spatial extent of the wave functions of the LLs. The magnetic fields induce a sudden and large increase in energy of the quasibound states because of a pi Berry phase jump of the massless Dirac fermions in graphene. Such a behavior is the hallmark of the Klein tunneling in graphene. Abstract

Ordered atomic-scale superlattices on surface hold great interest both for basic science and for potential applications in advanced technology. However, controlled fabrication of superlattices down to atomic scale has proven exceptionally challenging. Here we demonstrate the segregation-growth and self-organization of ordered S atomic superlattices confined at the interface between graphene and S-rich Cu substrates. Scanning tunneling microscope (STM) studies show that, by finely controlling the growth temperature, we obtain well-ordered S (sub)nanometer-cluster superlattice and monoatomic superlattices with various periods at the interface. These atomic superlattices are stable in atmospheric environment and robust even after high-temperature annealing (~ 350 oC). Our experiments demonstrate that the S monoatomic superlattice can drive graphene into the electronic Kekul\'e distortion phase when the period of the ordered S adatoms is commensurate with graphene lattice. Our results not only open a road to realize atomic-scale superlattices at interfaces, but also provide a new route to realize exotic electronic states in graphene., Comment: 4 figures

93. Based on proteomics to explore the mechanism of mecobalamin promoting the repair of injured peripheral nerves

Abstract

Mecobalamin is commonly used in the adjuvant intervention of various peripheral nerve injuries. Actin cytoskeleton plays a role in the regeneration of myelin and axon. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the possibility of mecobalamin regulating actin cytoskeleton in repairing nerve injury. In this study, a crush injury on the right sciatic nerve of two groups of rats (12 in each group) was established. The control group was only given normal saline (i.g.), and the intervention group was given mecobalamin 1 mg/kg (i.g.). The rats were sacrificed on 28th day and the injured nerves were collected for proteomics. The result shows that regulation of actin cytoskeleton pathway changed significantly. The expression of protein Vav1 was verified by Western blot and immunofluorescence. In the intervention group, the nerve fiber structure was complete, the axons were dense and symmetrical, and the myelin sheath was compact and uniform in thickness. The positive rate of myelin basic protein and [beta]III-tubulin was higher than that in the control group. The findings of the study show that mecobalamin regulates the actin cytoskeleton in the repair of nerve damage and upregulates Vav1 in the regulation of actin cytoskeleton pathway. Le cytosquelette d'actine joue un role dans la regenerescence de la myeline et de l'axone. Par consequent, cette etude avait pour but d'explorer la possibilite que la mecobalamine participe a la regulation du cytosquelette d'actine dans la reparation des lesions nerveuses. Dans cette etude, nous avons produit des lesions par ecrasement du nerf sciatique droit dans deux groupes de rats (12 dans chaque groupe). Chez les temoins, nous avons uniquement administre une solution saline par voie intragastrique (i.g.), et le groupe de traitement a recu de la mecobalamine a 1 mg/kg (i.g.). Les rats ont ete euthanasies au 28e jour et nous avons preleve les nerfs leses aux fins d'analyses proteomiques. Les resultats montrent que la regulation de la voie de signalisation du cytosquelette d'actine se modifiait de facon marquee. Nous avons verifie l'expression de la proteine Vav1 a l'aide de l'immunobuvardage de Western et de l'immunofluorescence. Dans le groupe de traitement, la structure des fibres nerveuses etait complete, les axones etaient denses et symetriques, et la gaine de myeline etait compacte et d'epaisseur uniforme. Le taux de positivite de la proteine basique de la myeline (PBM) et de la tubuline [beta]III etait plus eleve que chez les temoins. Les resultats de l'etude montrent que la mecobalamine participe a la regulation du cytosquelette d'actine dans la reparation des lesions nerveuse et qu'elle entraine une regulation a la hausse de la proteine Vav1 dans la regulation de la voie de signalisation du cytosquelette d'actine. Abstract

Twist, as a simple and unique degree of freedom, could lead to enormous novel quantum phenomena in bilayer graphene. A small rotation angle introduces low-energy van Hove singularities (VHSs) approaching the Fermi level, which result in unusual correlated states in the bilayer graphene. It is reasonable to expect that the twist could also affect the electronic properties of few-layer graphene dramatically. However, such an issue has remained experimentally elusive. Here, by using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS), we systematically studied a twisted trilayer graphene (TTG) with two different small twist angles between adjacent layers. Two sets of VHSs originating from the two twist angles were observed in the TTG, indicating that the TTG could be simply regarded as a combination of two different twisted bilayer graphene. By using high-resolution STS, we observed split of the VHSs and directly imaged spatial symmetry breaking of electronic states around the VHSs.
