Search

We describe the first X-ray observations of binary millisecond pulsars PSRs J0023+0923, J1810+1744, J2215+5135, and J2256-1024. All four are Fermi gamma-ray sources and three are 'black-widow' pulsars, with companions of mass < 0.1 solar masses. Data were taken using the Chandra X-Ray Observatory and covered a full binary orbit for each pulsar. Two pulsars, PSRs J2215+5135 and J2256-1024, show significant orbital variability and X-ray flux minima at the times of eclipses observed at radio wavelengths. This phenomenon is consistent with intrabinary shock emission characteristic of black-widow pulsars. The other two pulsars, PSRs J0023+0923 and J1810+1744, do not demonstrate significant variability, but are fainter than the other two sources. Spectral fits yield power-law indices that range from 1.4 to 2.3 and blackbody temperatures in the hundreds of eV. The spectrum for PSR J2215+5135 shows a significant hard X-ray component (41% of counts are above 2 keV), which is additional evidence for the presence of intrabinary shock emission., 3 pages, 2 figures, 1 table, 2012 IAU General Assembly

The energetic, eclipsing millisecond pulsar J1816+4510 was recently discovered in a low-frequency radio survey with the Green Bank Telescope. With an orbital period of 8.7 hr and minimum companion mass of 0.16 Msun it appears to belong to an increasingly important class of pulsars that are ablating their low-mass companions. We report the discovery of the gamma-ray counterpart to this pulsar, and present a likely optical/ultraviolet counterpart as well. Using the radio ephemeris we detect pulsations in the unclassified gamma-ray source 2FGL J1816.5+4511, implying an efficiency of ~25% in converting the pulsar's spin-down luminosity into gamma-rays and adding PSR J1816+4510 to the large number of millisecond pulsars detected by Fermi. The likely optical/UV counterpart was identified through position coincidence (15,000 K it would be among the brightest and hottest of low-mass pulsar companions, and appears qualitatively different from other eclipsing pulsar systems. In particular, current data suggest that it is a factor of two larger than most white dwarfs of its mass, but a factor of four smaller than its Roche lobe. We discuss possible reasons for its high temperature and odd size, and suggest that it recently underwent a violent episode of mass loss. Regardless of origin, its brightness and the relative unimportance of irradiation make it an ideal target for a mass, and hence a neutron star mass, determination., 10 pages, 6 figures. Over the summer of 2007, we obtained 1191 hours of `drift-scan' pulsar search observations with the Green Bank Telescope at a radio frequency of 350 MHz. Here we describe the survey setup, search procedure, and the discovery and follow-up timing of thirteen pulsars. Among the new discoveries, one (PSR J1623-0841) was discovered only through its single pulses, two (PSRs J1327-0755 and J1737-0814) are millisecond pulsars, and another (PSR J2222-0137) is a mildly recycled pulsar. PSR J1327-0755 is a 2.7 ms pulsar at a DM of 27.9 pc cm^{-3} in a 8.7 day orbit with a minimum companion mass of 0.22 solar mass. PSR J1737-0814 is a 4.2 ms pulsar at a DM of 55.3 pc cm^{-3} in a 79.3 day orbit with a minimum companion mass of 0.06 solar mass. PSR J2222-0137 is a 32.8 ms pulsar at a very low DM of 3.27 pc cm^{-3} in a 2.4 day orbit with a minimum companion mass of 1.11 solar mass. It is most likely a white dwarf-neutron star system or an unusual low-eccentricity double neutron star system. We searched for radio pulsars in 25 of the non-variable, unassociated sources in the Fermi LAT Bright Source List with the Green Bank Telescope at 820 MHz. We report the discovery of three radio and gamma-ray millisecond pulsars (MSPs) from a high Galactic latitude subset of these sources. All of the pulsars are in binary systems, which would have made them virtually impossible to detect in blind gamma-ray pulsation searches. Carbonylation of methanol and methyl acetate to acetic acid and acetic anhydride are the only current examples of C 1 processes displacing petrochemical routes for the manufacture of commodity chemicals. Modem carbonylation processes are based upon an iodide promoted, homogeneous rhodium catalyst operating under mild reaction conditions (150°C–200°C, 25–45 bar). This highly selective catalytic cycle is described, and contrasted with other catalytic metals. The embodiment of Rh/I catalysis in commercial BP Chemicals methanol and methyl acetate carbonylation processes is also described, illustrating the process simplicity arising from high selectivity. The now extensive literature on attempts to support the rhodium catalyst in iodide promoted systems is reviewed. In the liquid phase, catalytic behaviour similar to that for the homogeneous system is claimed, although proper comparative data and conclusive evidence for catalyst immobilisation is generally lacking. A number of supported rhodium systems are reported to be active under vapour phase conditions, and activated carbon is also found to promote carbonylation activity of certain base metals, notably nickel. Issues affecting commercial viability include catalyst lifetime, gaseous by-product formation and efficiency of utilisation of precious metal components. Literature on carbonylation in the absence of iodide promoter, and on direct routes to acetyls from synthesis gas or methanol only is also reviewed. All require step changes in catalytic performance in order to approach commercial viability.

Neutron stars are composed of the densest form of matter known to exist in our Universe, the composition and properties of which are still theoretically uncertain. Measurements of the masses or radii of these objects can strongly constrain the neutron star matter equation of state and rule out theoretical models of their composition(1,2). The observed range of neutron star masses, however, has hitherto been too narrow to rule out many predictions of 'exotic' non-nucleonic components(3-6). The Shapiro delay is a general-relativistic increase in light travel time through the curved space-time near a massive body(7). For highly inclined (nearly edge-on) binary millisecond radio pulsar systems, this effect allows us to infer the masses of both the neutron star and its binary companion to high precision(8,9). Here we present radio timing observations of the binary millisecond pulsar J1614-2230(10,11) that show a strong Shapiro delay signature. We calculate the pulsar mass to be (1.97 +/- 0.04) M-circle dot, which rules out almost all currently proposed(2-5) hyperon or boson condensate equations of state (M-circle dot, solar mass). Quark matter can support a star this massive only if the quarks are strongly interacting and are therefore not 'free' quarks(12).

Sixteen pulsars have been discovered so far in blind searches of photons collected with the Large Area Telescope on the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. We here report the discovery of radio pulsations from two of them. PSR J1741-2054, with period P=413ms, was detected in archival Parkes telescope data and subsequently has been detected at the Green Bank Telescope (GBT). Its received flux varies greatly due to interstellar scintillation and it has a very small dispersion measure of DM=4.7pc/cc, implying a distance of ~0.4kpc and possibly the smallest luminosity of any known radio pulsar. At this distance, for isotropic emission, its gamma-ray luminosity above 0.1GeV corresponds to 25% of the spin-down luminosity of dE/dt=9.4e33erg/s. The gamma-ray profile occupies 1/3 of pulse phase and has three closely-spaced peaks with the first peak lagging the radio pulse by delta=0.29P. We have also identified a soft Swift source that is the likely X-ray counterpart. In many respects PSR J1741-2054 resembles the Geminga pulsar. The second source, PSR J2032+4127, was detected at the GBT. It has P=143ms, and its DM=115pc/cc suggests a distance of ~3.6kpc, but we consider it likely that it is located within the Cyg OB2 stellar association at half that distance. The radio emission is nearly 100% linearly polarized, and the main radio peak precedes by delta=0.15P the first of two narrow gamma-ray peaks that are separated by Delta=0.50P. Faint, diffuse X-ray emission in a Chandra image is possibly its pulsar wind nebula. PSR J2032+4127 likely accounts for the EGRET source 3EG J2033+4118, while its pulsar wind is responsible for the formerly unidentified HEGRA source TeV J2032+4130., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ

Radio pulsars with millisecond spin periods are thought to have been spun up by transfer of matter and angular momentum from a low-mass companion star during an X-ray-emitting phase. The spin periods of the neutron stars in several such low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) systems have been shown to be in the millisecond regime, but no radio pulsations have been detected. Here we report on detection and follow-up observations of a nearby radio millisecond pulsar (MSP) in a circular binary orbit with an optically identified companion star. Optical observations indicate that an accretion disk was present in this system within the last decade. Our optical data show no evidence that one exists today, suggesting that the radio MSP has turned on after a recent LMXB phase., Comment: published in Science

At the end of the EGRET mission, the only firmly identified sources of GeV emission in our Galaxy were a handful of young pulsars and a solar flare. With the recent launch of AGILE and the imminent launch of GLAST, the sources that EGRET saw will again be studied in γ‐rays. We review the multiwavelength observations of the error boxes of Galactic EGRET sources to see what types of sources this new generation of γ‐ray telescopes will be studying. I note that most, if not all, of the sources seem to be related to pulsars. Several are probably radio pulsars not known during the time of EGRET. Others are radio‐quiet pulsars like Geminga. Still others are probably the product of a pulsar wind interacting with a dense environment. The rest seem to be coincident with things associated with the birth of pulsars i.e. supernova remnants, molecular clouds, and massive star associations.

We describe a comprehensive pulsar monitoring campaign for the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on the {\em Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope} (formerly GLAST). The detection and study of pulsars in gamma rays give insights into the populations of neutron stars and supernova rates in the Galaxy, into particle acceleration mechanisms in neutron star magnetospheres, and into the "engines" driving pulsar wind nebulae. LAT's unprecedented sensitivity between 20 MeV and 300 GeV together with its 2.4 sr field-of-view makes detection of many gamma-ray pulsars likely, justifying the monitoring of over two hundred pulsars with large spin-down powers. To search for gamma-ray pulsations from most of these pulsars requires a set of phase-connected timing solutions spanning a year or more to properly align the sparse photon arrival times. We describe the choice of pulsars and the instruments involved in the campaign. Attention is paid to verifications of the LAT pulsar software, using for example giant radio pulses from the Crab and from PSR B1937+21 recorded at Nan\c{c}ay, and using X-ray data on PSR J0218+4232 from XMM-Newton. We demonstrate accuracy of the pulsar phase calculations at the microsecond level. PSR J1744-3922 is a binary pulsar exhibiting highly variable pulsed radio emission. We report on a statistical multi-frequency study of the pulsed radio flux variability which suggests that this phenomenon is extrinsic to the pulsar and possibly tied to the companion, although not strongly correlated with orbital phase. The pulsar has an unusual combination of characteristics compared to typical recycled pulsars: a long spin period (172 ms); a relatively high magnetic field strength (1.7x10^10 G); a very circular, compact orbit of 4.6 hours; and a low-mass companion (0.08 Msun). These spin and orbital properties are likely inconsistent with standard evolutionary models. We find similarities between the properties of the PSR J1744-3922 system and those of several other known binary pulsar systems, motivating the identification of a new class of binary pulsars. We suggest that this new class could result from either: a standard accretion scenario of a magnetar or a high-magnetic field pulsar; common envelope evolution with a low-mass star and a neutron star, similar to what is expected for ultra-compact X-ray binaries; or, accretion induced collapse of a white dwarf. We also report the detection of a possible K'=19.30(15) infrared counterpart at the position of the pulsar, which is relatively bright if the companion is a helium white dwarf at the nominal distance, and discuss its implications for the pulsar's companion and evolutionary history., 18 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication of ApJ

The production of runaway massive binaries offers key insights into the evolution of close binary stars and open clusters. The stars HD 14633 and HD 15137 are rare examples of such runaway systems, and in this work we investigate the mechanism by which they were ejected from their parent open cluster, NGC 654. We discuss observational characteristics that can be used to distinguish supernova ejected systems from those ejected by dynamical interactions, and we present the results of a new radio pulsar search of these systems as well as estimates of their predicted X-ray flux assuming that each binary contains a compact object. Since neither pulsars nor X-ray emission are observed in these systems, we cannot conclude that these binaries contain compact companions. We also consider whether they may have been ejected by dynamical interactions in the dense environment where they formed, and our simulations of four-body interactions suggest that a dynamical origin is possible but unlikely. We recommend further X-ray observations that will conclusively identify whether HD 14633 or HD 15137 contain neutron stars., Comment: Accepted to ApJ, 11 pages

At the end of the EGRET mission, only 6 Galactic sources in the 3rd EGRET catalog had firm identifications: 5 young pulsars and a solar flare. Another dozen or so had plausible counterparts. Now, at the dawn of the GLAST era, around 30 sources detected at other wavelengths have been identified as probable or plausible counterparts. These include nearly all of the sources with significant emission above 1 GeV, which will be the sources GLAST will best be able to study. I review the current status of our knowledge of these sources based on radio, infrared, and X‐ray data. These Galactic sources are destined to be the first sources firmly identified by GLAST.

Introduction This chapter deals with X-ray emission from isolated neutron stars for which the energy for the observed X-rays is thought to originate from the rotation of the neutron star, or from an internal heat reservoir following formation. Rotation power can manifest itself as pulsed emission, or as nebular radiation produced by a relativistic wind of particles emitted by the neutron star. Residual heat of formation is observed as soft X-ray emission from young neutron stars. Such thermal radiation, however, can also be produced as a result of reheating from internal or external sources. Rotation-powered pulsed and nebular X-ray emission, as well as thermal emission, can often be observed in a single object simultaneously; this is both fascinating and annoying, as one invariably contaminates the study of the other. There are also a handful of neutron stars for which the origin of the observed X-ray emission is unclear but may be related to the above processes; we will discuss those as well. Rotation-powered neutron stars are generally referred to as “radio pulsars” since it is at radio wavelengths that the vast majority of the catalogued population (currently numbering ∼1400) is observed. However, the radio emission is energetically unimportant, and we now know of several rotation-powered neutron stars that are not detected as radio sources in spite of deep searches (e.g. Crawford et al . 1998; McLaughlin et al . 2001). We therefore use the more physically motivated term “rotation-powered.”

We report on Chandra ACIS and XMM-Newton MOS/PN imaging observations of two pulsar wind nebulae (K3/PSR J1420-6048 and G313.3+0.1=`the rabbit') associated with the Galactic unidentified gamma-ray source GeV J1417-6100. With the excellent ACIS imaging, the very energetic pulsar PSR J1420-6048 is separated from its surrounding nebula. This nebula has surprisingly little compact structure, although a faint arc is seen near the pulsar. Similarly, two point sources are resolved in the rabbit nebula. The large XMM-Newton collecting area provides useful spectral constraints on the rabbit and the associated point sources. Based on spectra and X-ray morphology, we identify one point source as a plausible pulsar counterpart. Large backgrounds and low source counts limited pulse search sensitivities, but we report pulse upper limits and a candidate 108ms period for the rabbit pulsar based on the XMM-Newton data and an ACIS CC observation. Comparison of the X-ray images with high resolution ATCA radio maps shows that the non-thermal X-ray emission corresponds well with the radio structure., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures; To appear in the Astrophysical Journal

We present a new planetary nebula, first identified in images from the Australia Telescope Compact Array, although not recognized at that time. Recent observations with the Spitzer Space Telescope during the GLIMPSE Legacy program have rediscovered the object. The high-resolution radio and infrared images enable the identification of the central star or its wind, the recognition of the radio emission as thermal, and the probable presence of polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons in and around the source. These lead to the conclusion that G313.3+00.3 is a planetary nebula. This object is of particular interest because it was discovered solely through radio and mid-infrared imaging, without any optical (or near-infrared) confirmation, and acts as a proof of concept for the discovery of many more highly extinguished planetary nebulae. G313.3+00.3 is well-resolved by both the instruments with which it was identified, and suffers extreme reddening due to its location in the Scutum-Crux spiral arm., Comment: 18 pages, LaTeX (aastex), incl. 8 PostScript (eps) figures and 1 table. We present the results of a 430-MHz survey for pulsars conducted during the upgrade to the 305-m Arecibo radio telescope. Our survey covered a total of 1147 square degrees of sky using a drift-scan technique. We detected 33 pulsars, 10 of which were not known prior to the survey observations. The highlight of the new discoveries is PSR J0407+1607, which has a spin period of 25.7 ms, a characteristic age of 1.5 Gyr and is in a 1.8-yr orbit about a low-mass (>0.2 Msun) companion. The long orbital period and small eccentricity (e = 0.0009) make the binary system an important new addition to the ensemble of binary pulsars suitable to test for violations of the strong equivalence principle. We also report on our initially unsuccessful attempts to detect optically the companion to J0407+1607 which imply that its absolute visual magnitude is > 12.1. If, as expected on evolutionary grounds, the companion is an He white dwarf, our non-detection imples a cooling age of least 1 Gyr., 8 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the results of radio searches for pulsars within unidentified EGRET source error boxes. Using the Parkes multibeam system, we have surveyed 56 sources at Galactic latitudes |b| > 5 deg which do not appear to be associated with blazars. This population has been suggested to be distributed like the local star forming region known as the Gould Belt, the Galactic Halo, and/or the millisecond pulsars. We have discovered several new pulsars in this survey, including three new binary systems., 4 pages, to appear in the Proceedings of Young Neutron Stars and their Environment, International Astronomical Union. The newly discovered X‐ray transient XTE J1810‐197 exhibits almost all characteristics of magnetars. It possesses a relatively long spin period of 5.54 s and a rapid spin down rate of ≈ 10−11 s s−1, while showing no evidence for Doppler shifts due to a binary companion. This yields a magnetar‐strength dipole field B = 3 × 1014 G and a young characteristic age τ ⩽ 7600 yr. The spectrum of the source is notably soft (photon index ≈ 4) and optical observations with the 1.5 m Russian‐Turkish Optical Telescope RTT150 revealed a limiting magnitude of Rc = 21.5, both consistent with those of Soft gamma repeaters and anomalous X‐ray pulsars. However, the source shows a significant flux decline for over nine months and is present in archival ASCA and ROSAT observations at nearly two orders of magnitude fainter luminosity. Putting all evidence together shows that we have found the first confirmed transient magnetar. This suggests the presence of other unidentified transient magnetars in a state similar to XTE J1810‐197 in its inactive phase. The detection of such sources is one of the important areas in which future X‐ray timing missions can make a significant impact.

We present results from X-ray and radio observations of the recently discovered young Vela-like pulsar PSR J2021+3651, which is coincident with the EGRET gamma-ray source GeV 2020+3658. A 19.0-ks Chandra ACIS-S observation has revealed a ~20'' x 10'' pulsar wind nebula that is reminiscent of the equatorial tori seen around some young pulsars, along with thermal emission from an embedded point source (kT = 0.15 +/- 0.02 keV). We name the nebula G75.2+0.1. Its spectrum is well fit by an absorbed power-law model with photon index 1.7 +/- 0.3, hydrogen column density nH = 7.8 +/- 1.7 x 10^21 cm^-2, and an unabsorbed 0.3-10.0 keV flux of 1.9 +/- 0.3 x 10^-12 erg cm^-2 s^-1. We have spatially fit G75.2+0.1 with a model that assumes a toroidal morphology, and from this we infer that the torus is highly inclined 83 deg +/- 1 deg to the line of sight. A 20.8-ks Chandra observation in continuous-clocking mode reveals a possible pulse detection, with a pulsed fraction of ~37% and an H-test probability of occuring by chance of 1.2 x 10^-4. Timing observations with the Arecibo radio telescope spanning two years show that PSR J2021+3651 glitched sometime between MJDs 52616 and 52645 with parameters delta(v)/v = (2.587 +/- 0.002) x 10^-6 and delta(dot(v))/v = (6.2 +/- 0.3) x 10^-3, similar to those of the largest glitches observed in the Vela pulsar. PSR J2021+3651 is heavily scattered (T_sc = 17.7 ms +/- 0.9 ms at 1 GHz) and exhibits a significant amount of timing noise., Comment: 23 pages, 6 figures. Submitted to the Astrophysical Journal

We report on X-ray monitoring of two isolated pulsars within the same RXTE field of view. PSR J1811-1925 in the young supernova remnant G11.2-0.3 has a nearly sinusoidal pulse profile with a hard pulsed spectrum (photon index \~1.2). The pulsar is a highly efficient (~ 1% of spin-down energy) emitter of 2-50 keV pulsed X-rays despite having a fairly typical B ~ 2e12 G magnetic field. PSR J1809-1943/XTE J1810-197 is a newly discovered slow (P=5.54 s), apparently isolated X-ray pulsar which increased in flux by a factor of ~100 in 2003 January. Nine months of monitoring observations have shown a decrease in pulsed flux of ~ 30% without a significant change in its apparently thermal spectrum (kT ~0.7 keV) or pulse profile. During this time, the spin-down torque has fluctuated by a factor of ~ 2. We have imaged a 1 deg^2 field centered on the known Galactic supernova remnant (SNR) G11.2-0.3 at 74, 330, and 1465 MHz with the Very Large Array radio telescope (VLA) and 235 MHz with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT). The 235, 330, and 1465 MHz data have a resolution of 25 arcsec, while the 74 MHz data have a resolution of 100 arcsec. The addition of this low frequency data has allowed us to confirm the previously reported low frequency turnover in the radio continuum spectra of the two known SNRs in the field: G11.2-0.3 and G11.4-0.1 with unprecedented precision. Such low frequency turnovers are believed to arise from free-free absorption in ionized thermal gas along the lines of site to the SNRs. Our data suggest that the 74 MHz optical depths of the absorbing gas is 0.56 and 1.1 for G11.2-0.3 and G11.4-0.1, respectively. In addition to adding much needed low frequency integrated flux measurements for two known SNRs, we have also detected three new SNRs: G11.15-0.71, G11.03-0.05, and G11.18+0.11. These new SNRs have integrated spectral indices between -0.44 and -0.80. Because of confusion with thermal sources, the high resolution (compared to previous Galactic radio frequency surveys) and surface brightness sensitivity of our observations have been essential to the identification of these new SNRs. With this study we have more than doubled the number of SNRs within just a 1 deg^2 field of view in the inner Galactic plane. This result suggests that future low frequency observations of the Galactic plane of similar quality may go a long way toward alleviating the long recognized incompleteness of Galactic SNR catalogs., 31 pages, 9 figures. The X-ray Pulsar PSR J1811-1925 in the historic supernova remnant G11.2-0.3 has a characteristic age over 10 times the age of the remnant. This likely implies that its current spin period, 65 ms, is close to its birth spin period. Alternatively, the pulsar may have an unusually high braking index. We report here on regular Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer/ Proportional Counting Array (RXTE/PCA) timing observations of the pulsar that were designed to measure its braking index. We provide a preliminary phase-coherent timing solution which includes a significant $\ddot{\nu}$. The braking index we measure is >> 3, likely a result of conventional timing noise. We also report on a preliminary analysis of the pulsar's unusually hard spectrum: we determine a photon index of $\Gamma = 1.78\pm0.74$, for the pulsed component of the spectra, consistent within the uncertainties with previous ASCA and Chandra observations. The pulsed emission of PSR J1811-1925 is seen beyond 30 keV, and the pulsations remain sinusoidal up to and beyond this energy., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, To appear in the proceedings of the 34th Cospar Scientific Assembly

We have made radio continuum, HI and X-ray observations in the direction of the unidentified EGRET source 3EG J1410-6147, using the Australia Telescope Compact Array and the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The observations encompass the supernova remnant (SNR) G312.4-0.4 and the two young pulsars PSRs J1412-6145 and J1413-6141. We derive a lower distance limit of 6 kpc to the SNR, although interpretation of positive velocity features in the HI spectrum may imply the SNR is more distant than 14 kpc. PSR J1412-6145, with an age of 50 kyr, is the pulsar most likely associated with SNR G312.4-0.4. X-rays are not detected from either pulsar and diffuse X-ray emission near the bright western edge of the SNR is weak. Although there is circumstantial evidence that this western region is a pulsar wind nebula (PWN), the embedded pulsar PSR J1412-6145 is apparently not sufficiently powerful to explain the radio enhancement. The origin of the electron acceleration in this region and of the gamma-rays remain unidentified, unless the distance to PSR J1413-6141 is at least a factor of 3 lower than its dispersion measure distance., 10 pages, plus 5 jpeg figures, MNRAS, in press. We report on a deep search for radio pulsations toward five unidentified ASCA X-ray sources coincident with EGRET gamma-ray sources. This search has led to the discovery of a young and energetic pulsar using data obtained with the new Wideband Arecibo Pulsar Processor. PSR J2021+3651 is likely associated with the X-ray source AX J2021.1+3651, which in turn is likely associated with the COS B high energy gamma-ray source 2CG 075+00, also known as GeV J2020+3658 or 3EG J2021+3716. PSR J2021+3651 has a rotation period P = 104 ms and P_dot = 9.6x10^{-14}, implying a characteristic age ~17 kyr and a spin-down luminosity E_dot ~ 3.4x10^{36}ergs/s. The dispersion measure DM ~ 371 pc cm^{-3} is by far the highest of any observed pulsar in the Galactic longitude range 55 < l < 80. This DM suggests a distance d > 10 kpc, and a high gamma-ray efficiency of \~15%, but the true distance may be closer if there is a significant contribution to the DM from excess gas in the Cygnus region. We present X-ray, radio, and infrared observations of the 68 ms pulsar PSR J1420-6048 and its surrounding nebula, a possible counterpart of the gamma-ray source GeV J1417-6100/3EG J1420-6038. Pulsed X-ray emission at the radio period is marginally detected by ASCA from a source embedded in the hard spectrum X-ray nebula AX J1420.1-6049. At radio wavelengths, the pulsar is found to be strongly linearly and circularly polarized, and the polarization sweep is measured. A comparison of high resolution ATCA radio imaging of the Kookaburra's upper wing (G313.6+0.3), which contains the pulsar and the X-ray nebula, with infrared images suggests the radio emission is partly non-thermal., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Astrophysical Journal Letters

There is growing evidence that some pulsar wind nebulae (PWN) are significant sources of variable emission above 100 MeV. We review the observational evidence associating five PWN and candidate PWN with the four sources showing the most >100 MeV variability among Galactic sources that are bright above 1 GeV. We discuss potential physical mechanisms for such variability, examine the apparent X-ray and radio efficiencies, and place limits on the magnetic field required for variable synchrotron emission at such high energies.

We present X-ray and radio studies of sources which are brightabove 1 GeV (F_{>1GeV} > 4e-8 ph/cm^2/s. Only 11 out of ~30 of these gamma-ray sources have been identified with lower energy counterparts: 5 blazars and 6 pulsars. Three of these pulsars are surrounded by radio pulsar wind nebulae (PWN), two of which are also seen as bright, extended X-ray synchrotron nebulae. The ASCA X-ray telescope has observed 28 of the bright GeV sources, revealing an excess of F_{2-10keV} > 10e-12 ergs/cm^2/s sources within the {\it EGRET} error contours of the unidentified sources. Although several supernova remnants are positionally coincident with these sources, we find no X-ray evidence of high energy particle production in SNR shell shocks consistent with the GeV positions. We also present initial results from follow on radio imaging studies of several fields containing unidentified sources. We have discovered new X-ray/radio nebulae in three of these fields which are strong candidates for PWN. These sources, along with a similar nebula in CTA 1 and the PWN around PSR B1853+01 in W44, are all positionally coincident with variable EGRET sources. This suggests a class of variable gamma-ray sources associated with synchrotron emitting regions powered by the winds of young pulsars.

The USA Experiment is a new X-ray timing experiment with large collecting area and microsecond time resolution capable of conducting a broad program of studies of galactic X-ray binaries. USA is one of nine experiments aboard the Advanced Research and Global Observation Satellite which was launched February 23, 1999. USA is a collimated proportional counter X-ray telescope with about 1000 cm$^2$ of effective area per detector with two detectors sensitive to photons in the energy range 1-15 keV. A unique feature of USA is that photon events are time tagged by reference to an onboard GPS receiver allowing precise absolute time and location determination. Several known low- and high-mass X-ray binaries with orbital periods between tens of minutes and several days were examined in EGRET data. Instrument thresholds for orbital modulation were calculated, and appropriate observations were analyzed with new software which uses maximum likelihood methods for signal detection, fully accounting for variations in EGRET exposure, as well as the structured gamma-ray background and the energy-dependent point-spread function. While some sources were not detected by EGRET at all, several were marginally detected with less than 5 σ significance. However, due to significant background and low statistics, the observations were unable to constrain the modulation fraction of any of the sources.

We have completed a 350 MHz drift scan survey using the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope with the goal of finding new radio pulsars, especially millisecond pulsars that can be timed to high precision. This survey covered ~10300 square degrees and all of the data have now been fully processed. We have discovered a total of 31 new pulsars, seven of which are recycled pulsars. A companion paper by Boyles et al. (2012) describes the survey strategy, sky coverage, and instrumental set-up, and presents timing solutions for the first 13 pulsars. Here we describe the data analysis pipeline, survey sensitivity, and follow-up observations of new pulsars, and present timing solutions for 10 other pulsars. We highlight several sources---two interesting nulling pulsars, an isolated millisecond pulsar with a measurement of proper motion, and a partially recycled pulsar, PSR J0348+0432, which has a white dwarf companion in a relativistic orbit. We present a modified beat frequency modulated accretion model appropriate to a description of the horizontal branch oscillations of Z-type low-mass x-ray binaries. This model incorporates several new physical elements: (i) magnetic screening by the accretion disk and neutron star, (ii) radiation pressure dominance in the inner disk, and (iii) stellar rotation effects. Fitted to observational data, the model constrains the surface magnetic field in a typical LMXlB Z source to be less than 1O deg G and the stellar spin frequency to be greater than 400 Hz. The predicted high stellar spin frequency falls in a range where observational upper limits on pulsation are not a constraint. The derived magnetic field and spin frequency range are compatible with the fastest radio pulsars.

4U0115+63 is a recurrent transient X‐ray pulsar in a moderately eccentric orbit with a Be star companion, V635 Cas. Many outbursts from this system have been reported over the past twenty years; yet despite the apparent relation between optical outbursts from the companion star and subsequent X‐ray transient events, the physical mechanism for the mass transfer in the system remains unclear. In this paper, we present the preliminary results of analysis of observations made using BATSE during the 1991 April outburst from this system. This outburst does not fit the pattern of three year recurrence intervals previously suggested by Whitlock, Roussel–Dupre and Priedhorsky (1989). The orbital elements of the system have been updated and do not support the claim of Tamura et al., (1992) that apsidal motion was detected in this system based on the 1990 Ginga outburst.

LS I +61 303 and LS 5039 are exceptionally rare examples of HMXBs with MeV-TeV emission, making them two of only five known or proposed "gamma-ray binaries". There has been disagreement within the literature over whether these systems are microquasars, with stellar winds accreting onto a compact object to produce high energy emission and relativistic jets, or whether their emission properties might be better explained by a relativistic pulsar wind colliding with the stellar wind. Here we present an attempt to detect radio pulsars in both systems with the Green Bank Telescope. The upper limits of flux density are between 4.1-14.5 uJy, and we discuss the null results of the search. Our spherically symmetric model of the wind of LS 5039 demonstrates that any pulsar emission will be strongly absorbed by the dense wind unless there is an evacuated region formed by a relativistic colliding wind shock. LS I +61 303 contains a rapidly rotating Be star whose wind is concentrated near the stellar equator. As long as the pulsar is not eclipsed by the circumstellar disk or viewed through the densest wind regions, detecting pulsed emission may be possible during part of the orbit., Comment: ApJ, in press

We present precise phase-connected pulse timing solutions for 16 gamma-ray-selected pulsars recently discovered using the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope plus one very faint radio pulsar (PSR J1124-5916) that is more effectively timed with the LAT. We describe the analysis techniques including a maximum likelihood method for determining pulse times of arrival from unbinned photon data. A major result of this work is improved position determinations, which are crucial for multi-wavelength follow up. For most of the pulsars, we overlay the timing localizations on X-ray images from Swift and describe the status of X-ray counterpart associations. We report glitches measured in PSRs J0007+7303, J1124-5916, and J1813-1246. We analyze a new 20 ks Chandra ACIS observation of PSR J0633+0632 that reveals an arcminute-scale X-ray nebula extending to the south of the pulsar. We were also able to precisely localize the X-ray point source counterpart to the pulsar and find a spectrum that can be described by an absorbed blackbody or neutron star atmosphere with a hard powerlaw component. Another Chandra ACIS image of PSR J1732-3131 reveals a faint X-ray point source at a location consistent with the timing position of the pulsar. Finally, we present a compilation of new and archival searches for radio pulsations from each of the gamma-ray-selected pulsars as well as a new Parkes radio observation of PSR J1124-5916 to establish the gamma-ray to radio phase offset.

Nonpulsed but variable X-ray emission has been detected from the binary system containing the radio pulsar PSR 1259-63 during two pointed ROSAT observations, taken 5 months apart. This 47.7 ms radio pulsar is in a highly eccentric (epsilon approximately 0.85) binary system with the 10-15 solar mass Be star SS 2883. It is the first radio pulsar found to be in a binary system with a massive main-sequence companion; it is also the most highly eccentric binary system known to contain a neutron star. The level of X-ray flux detected in the ROSAT observations has increased with orbital phase by a factor of at least 10 between 1992 February and 1993 February. The X-ray flux is significantly greater than expected from the Be star's corona and seems likely to originate either from low-level stellar wind accretion onto the neutron star or from the shock between the stellar wind and the relativistic pulsar wind. The system may be the progenitor of the more slowly rotating Be X-ray binary pulsar systems.

We report a search for gravitational waves from the inspiral, merger and ringdown of binary black holes (BBH) with total mass between 25 and 100 solar masses, in data taken at the LIGO and Virgo observatories between July 7, 2009 and October 20, 2010. The maximum sensitive distance of the detectors over this period for a (20,20) Msun coalescence was 300 Mpc. No gravitational wave signals were found. We thus report upper limits on the astrophysical coalescence rates of BBH as a function of the component masses for non-spinning components, and also evaluate the dependence of the search sensitivity on component spins aligned with the orbital angular momentum. We find an upper limit at 90% confidence on the coalescence rate of BBH with non-spinning components of mass between 19 and 28 Msun of 3.3 \times 10^-7 mergers /Mpc^3 /yr., Comment: 15 pages PDFLaTeX, minor changes to correspond with published version.
