An approach previously developed for the calculation of transport coefficients via the Mott relations is applied to the calculation of finite temperature transport properties of disordered alloys---electrical resistivity and the electronic part of thermal conductivity. The coherent-potential approximation is used to treat chemical disorder as well as other sources of electron scattering, i.e., temperature induced magnetic moment fluctuations and lattice vibrations via the alloy analogy model. This approach, which treats all forms of disorder on an equal first-principles footing, is applied to the calculation of transport properties of a series of fcc concentrated solid solutions of the $3d$-transition metals Ni, Fe, Co, and Cr. For the nonmagnetic alloys ${\mathrm{Ni}}_{0.8}{\mathrm{Cr}}_{0.2}$ and ${\mathrm{Ni}}_{0.33}{\mathrm{Co}}_{0.33}{\mathrm{Cr}}_{0.3}$, the combined effects of chemical disorder and electron-lattice vibrations scattering result in a monotonic increase in the resistivity as a function of temperature from an already large, $T=0$, residual resistivity. For magnetic ${\mathrm{Ni}}_{0.5}{\mathrm{Co}}_{0.5},{\mathrm{Ni}}_{0.5}{\mathrm{Fe}}_{0.5}$, and ${\mathrm{Ni}}_{0.33}{\mathrm{Fe}}_{0.33}{\mathrm{Co}}_{0.33}$, the residual resistivity of which is small, additional electron scattering from temperature induced magnetic moment fluctuations results in a further rapid increase of the resistivity as a function of temperature. The electronic part of the thermal conductivity in nonmagnetic ${\mathrm{Ni}}_{0.8}{\mathrm{Cr}}_{0.2}$ and ${\mathrm{Ni}}_{0.33}{\mathrm{Co}}_{0.33}{\mathrm{Cr}}_{0.33}$ monotonically increases with temperature. This behavior is a result of the competition between a reduction in the conductivity due to electron-lattice vibrations scattering and temperature induced increase in the number of carriers. In the magnetic alloys, electron scattering from magnetic fluctuations leads to an initial rapid decrease in thermal conductivity until this is overcome by an increasing number of carriers at temperatures slightly below the Curie temperature. Similar to the resistivity above ${T}_{C}$, the electronic parts of the thermal conductivities are close to each other in all alloys studied.

Controlling spin relaxation is essential for spintronic and spin torque applications. Manipulating spin relaxation allows the adjustment of magnetization reversal speed at microwave frequencies. Moreover, the critical current in spin torque devices can be reduced and tuned. In the experiment it is possible to distinguish between the intrinsic and extrinsic relaxation channels. The latter can be tailored with respect to the intensity and anisotropic behaviour. In particular, methods for inducing elementary relaxation channels of uniaxial symmetry and their impact on the magnetization dynamics are discussed in this presentation. Fe-based thin films have been studied by means of the ferromagnetic resonance technique, by which the intrinsic and extrinsic relaxation processes can be disentangled. While the former are rather isotropic and can be adjusted via spin-orbit interaction, the latter can be modified in an advanced way. It is shown, how crystalline defects, inhomogeneities of chemical composition, and interface modifications can induce the 2-magnon scattering. Control and systematic manipulation of these parameters allow tailoring the overall spin relaxation in a desired manner with respect to the direction of magnetization and precessional frequency.

Various technical developments enlarged the potential of angle-resolved photo emission (ARPES) tremendously during the last one or two decades. In particular improved momentum and energy resolution as well as the use of photon energies from few eV up to several keV makes ARPES a rather unique tool to investigate the electronic properties of solids and surfaces. Obviously, this rises the need for a corresponding theoretical formalism that allows to accompany experimental ARPES studies in an adequate way. As will be demonstrated by several examples this goal could be achieved by various recent developments on the basis of the one-step model of photo emission: The spin-orbit induced Rashba-splitting of Shockley-type surface states is discussed using a fully relativistic description. The impact of chemical disorder within surface layers can be handled by means of the Coherent Potential Approximation (CPA) alloy theory. Calculating phonon properties together with the corresponding electron-phonon self-energy allows a direct comparison with features in the ARPES spectra caused by electron-phonon interaction. The same holds for the influence of electronic correlation effects. These are accounted for by means of the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) that removes the most serious short comings of standard calculations based on the standard LDA. The combination of this approach with the CPA allows the investigation of correlated transition metal alloys. Finally, accounting for the photon momentum and going beyond the single scatter approximation for the final state allows to deal quantitatively with ARPES in the HAXPES regime that reduces the influence of the surface on the spectra and probing primarily the bulk electronic structure this way.
