In this study, we investigate the role of matching communication (i.e., relational messages received) in mentoring outcomes (mentor and protégé career attitudes). Specifically, we used data from a sample of 145 matched mentor–protégé dyads in a response surface analysis to show that matched relational messaging generally relates to mentors (and less consistently, protégés) reporting enhanced career satisfaction and career commitment. Furthermore, our findings are consistent with previous research showing that when relational messages (i.e., intimacy) or self-disclosure are matched at high or low (i.e., more extreme) levels, the mentor and protégé have the best outcomes. Additionally, beneficial mentor outcomes were maximized when levels of seriousness were matched at a moderate level. These results suggest that both levels of relational messaging, as well as the degree to which mentors and protégé match on these constructs influences mentoring outcomes. The snatch is prevalent in competitive and recreational lifting as well as strength training. Lifting straps (LS) are an accessory that wrap around the hand and the barbell, reducing the limitations of grip strength. However, this benefit has not been quantitatively supported for the snatch. The aim of this study was to compare muscle activation patterns between using LS and not using them at 80% of the snatch one-repetition maximum in a group of twelve sub-elite male weightlifters. It was hypothesized that LS would decrease forearm muscle activation and increase larger muscle group activation. Eight dominant-side muscles located in the lower limbs, back, shoulders, and upper limbs were measured via electromyography. A two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by a Tukey Pairwise comparison, revealed that LS significantly impacted (p = 0.039) muscle activation in the snatch. Specifically, latissimus dorsi activation increased the most (17.2 ± 55.7%), while biceps brachii activation decreased the most (−8.0 ± 37.0%). Comparing muscle activation across different phases of the lift showed that LS decreased forearm and bicep brachii activation by 16.0 ± 25.2% and 7.1 ± 35.7% respectively during the pull phase, and increased vastus lateralis, latissimus dorsi, and medial deltoid activation between the second part of the first pull and the catching position, with a corrected effect size exceeding 1.5. These results support the hypothesis that LS decrease forearm activation, which could reduce grip strength limitations and consequently, reduce problems associated with fatigue. Increases in vastus lateralis activation with the use of LS suggest a greater training stimulus during the snatch, which can help develop leg strength. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: This study assessed stakeholder experience with the core processes of The Integrated Community Engagement (ICE) Collaborative, a primary prevention approach addressing adolescent substance use in rural West Virginia, after three years of county-level implementation. Objectives: Guided by the Icelandic Prevention Model (IPM), the ICE Collaborative aims to enhance cooperation between researchers, policy makers, local practitioners, and community members and facilitate a paradigm shift in youth and community substance use prevention. This shift involves moving away from strategies focused on the repeated allocation of short-term grants that fund time-limited programs to a long-term, holistic, and sustainable approach overseen by local practitioners and coalitions. Results: We conducted qualitative interviews and focus groups with 33 stakeholders during the fall of 2022. Data analyses generated six major themes: 1) It Takes a Village to Prevent Adolescent Substance Use, 2) Improving Understanding and Commitment to Prevention Through Outreach, 3) Enhancing Student Engagement and Program Accessibility, 4) Addressing the Chronic Underfunding of Prevention and Youth Development Programs, 5) Acknowledging Family Contexts and Family Member Substance Use as Risk Factors, and 6) ICE/IPM Inspiring Solution-based Conversations, Goal Setting, and Strategy Selection. Conclusions: Stakeholders reported multiple positive characteristics of ICE for their communities and applauded the long-term focus and access to local data. Several suggestions for improved strategies were also reported. Results are discussed in line with the theoretical underpinnings of the IPM and current discourse around community health promotion in rural areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The field of bioelectronic medicine has advanced rapidly from rudimentary electrical therapies to cutting-edge closed-loop systems that integrate real-time physiological monitoring with adaptive neuromodulation. Early innovations, such as cardiac pacemakers and deep brain stimulation, paved the way for these sophisticated technologies. This review traces the historical and technological progression of bioelectronic medicine, culminating in the emerging potential of closed-loop devices for multiple disorders of the brain and body. We emphasize both invasive techniques, such as implantable devices for brain, spinal cord and autonomic regulation, while we introduce new prospects for non-invasive neuromodulation, including focused ultrasound and newly developed autonomic neurography enabling precise detection and titration of inflammatory immune responses. The case for closed-loop non-invasive autonomic neuromodulation (incorporating autonomic neurography and splenic focused ultrasound stimulation) is presented through its applications in conditions such as sepsis and chronic inflammation, illustrating its capacity to revolutionize personalized healthcare. Today, invasive or non-invasive closed-loop systems have yet to be developed that dynamically modulate autonomic nervous system function by responding to real-time physiological and molecular signals; it represents a transformative approach to therapeutic interventions and major opportunity by which the bioelectronic field may advance. Knowledge gaps remain and likely contribute to the lack of available closed loop autonomic neuromodulation systems, namely, (1) significant exogenous and endogenous noise that must be filtered out, (2) potential drift in the signal due to temporal change in disease severity and/or therapy induced neuroplasticity, and (3) confounding effects of exogenous therapies (e.g., concurrent medications that dysregulate autonomic nervous system functions). Leveraging continuous feedback and real-time adjustments may overcome many of these barriers, and these next generation systems have the potential to stand at the forefront of precision medicine, offering new avenues for individualized and adaptive treatment. The school climate measure (SCM) has demonstrated robust psychometrics in regionally diverse samples of high school-aged adolescents, but remains untested among early adolescents. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to establish construct validity and measurement indices of the SCM using a sample of early adolescents from public schools located in Central Appalachia (n = 1,128). In addition, known-groups validity analyzed each SCM domain against self-reported academic achievement and school connection. Analyses confirmed all 10 SCM domains fit the data well with strong internal consistency and factor loadings. Known-groups analyses suggest students who reported higher academic achievement and school connection demonstrated higher perceptions of school climate. Findings provide evidence that extends the use of the SCM to early adolescents and may support school-based policy.

Background: Students with chronic absences tend to struggle academically and may not benefit fully from all school has to offer. A positive school climate has been shown to reduce absenteeism and promote academic success. In this study, we explored how a positive school climate and high satisfaction with school may influence absences and academic performance. Methods: We used mediated path analysis to describe relationships involving school climate, school satisfaction, absences, and grades among 6839 middle school (49% female, 82% white) and 7470 high school (51% female, 85.0% white) students from 26 West Virginia schools. Results: In the middle and high school samples, we found that a positive school climate and high satisfaction with school reduces school absenteeism. Findings also suggest students with more absences tend to perform less well academically; a positive school climate and school satisfaction may promote good grades. Conclusions: Missing a substantial amount of school days for any reason may hinder students academic success, but "skipping" may require added attention. Improving school climate and student satisfaction with school may contribute to better attendance and grades.

Initiation of substance use often starts during adolescence, with tobacco and alcohol use frequently preceding the use of marijuana and other illicit drugs. Studies suggest that a positive school climate may prevent substance use while promoting healthy student behaviors. The purpose of this study was to determine the longitudinal associations between school climate and substance use initiation in a group of middle school students. Parallel latent growth curve modeling was used to examine changes among study variables longitudinally using a sample of 2,097 sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade students across 16 regional schools located in three counties in West Virginia. Results suggest that a positive school climate may prevent substance use initiation ([beta] = -0.07 to -0.25, p < 0.01). However, perceptions of school climate decreased on their own over time ([beta] = -0.28 to -0.66, p < 0.01). Furthermore, substance use initiation also increased as students grew older ([beta] = 0.96 to 0.99, p < 0.01) and reduced the effects of school climate longitudinally ([beta] = -0.07 to -0.24, p < 0.01). Early substance use initiation may be a warning sign of other underlying student issues and requires additional school support to foster student success. Findings suggest that a positive school climate may delay substance use initiation and promote school success. School climate may, therefore, be useful as an intervention to support school-based health promotion.

This article provides an overview of job design and offers an experiential teaching exercise to help students develop a better comprehension of job design and redesign, as well as learn the importance and challenges of such undertakings. Understanding the core elements of job design is especially important because job design serves as the foundational block for a deeper understanding and application of other organizational phenomenon such as the job characteristics model. This exercise is intended for the introductory undergraduate and graduate-level human resource management course as well as any courses covering "staffing." Additionally, this activity may be used in the undergraduate Principles of Management or associated introductory management class.

BackgroundDespite numerous discoveries regarding the molecular genesis and progression of primary cancers, the biology of metastasis remains poorly understood. Compared to very large numbers of circulating tumor cells that are now known to accompany nearly all cancers, a relatively limited number of lesions actually develop in most patients with metastases. We hypothesized that phenotypic changes driven by differential gene expression in a finite subpopulation of tumor cells render those cells capable of metastasis and sought to identify key pathways through analysis of gene expression in primary and metastatic lesions from the same patients.MethodsWe compared whole-genome expression in 4 matched samples of primary and metastatic sarcoma, then evaluated candidate genes with differential expression via quantitative PCR in 30 additional matched sets, tumor tissue immunostaining, siRNA loss-of-function in a sarcoma cell migration assay, and clinical correlation with overall and disease-free survival after metastasectomy.ResultsComparison of microarray signals identified differential expression of cell adhesion genes, including upregulation of KRT7 and MUC1 in metastases; KRT7 and MUC1 upregulation was confirmed in 22 (73%) and 20 (67%) matched sets of metastatic/primary tumors, respectively. Silencing of KRT7 and MUC1 via targeted siRNAs suppressed sarcoma cell migration in vitro, and a significant correlation (two-sided) was observed between both KRT7 and MUC1 expression in metastases and overall patient survival.ConclusionKRT7 and MUC1 may play a significant role in enabling sarcoma metastasis, and they may therefore be important prognostic biomarkers as well as potential targets for therapeutic prevention of metastasis.

Background and objectivesHuman papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination rates lag behind vaccination rates for other adolescent vaccines; a bundled intervention may improve HPV vaccination rates. Our objective is to evaluate the impact of quality improvement (QI) training plus a bundled practice-based intervention (provider prompts plus communication skills training plus performance feedback) on improving HPV vaccinations in pediatric resident continuity clinics.MethodsStaff and providers in 8 resident clinics participated in a 12-month QI study. The intervention included training to strengthen provider communication about the HPV vaccine. Clinics also implemented provider prompts, received monthly performance feedback, and participated in learning collaborative calls. The primary outcome measure was eligible visits with vaccination divided by vaccine-eligible visits (captured HPV vaccination opportunities). Practices performed chart audits that were fed into monthly performance feedback on captured HPV vaccination opportunities. We used conditional logistic regression (conditioning on practice) to assess captured vaccination opportunities, with the time period of the study (before and after the QI intervention) as the independent variable.ResultsOverall, captured opportunities for HPV vaccination increased by 16.4 percentage points, from 46.9% to 63.3%. Special cause was demonstrated by centerline shift, with 8 consecutive points above the preintervention mean. On adjusted analyses, patients were more likely to receive a vaccine during, versus before, the intervention (odds ratio: 1.87; 95% confidence interval: 1.54-2.28). Captured HPV vaccination rates improved at both well-child and other visits (by 11.7 and 13.0 percentage points, respectively).ConclusionsA bundled intervention of provider prompts and training in communication skills plus performance feedback increased captured opportunities for HPV vaccination.

Purpose Guidelines are limited for genetic testing for prostate cancer (PCA). The goal of this conference was to develop an expert consensus-driven working framework for comprehensive genetic evaluation of inherited PCA in the multigene testing era addressing genetic counseling, testing, and genetically informed management. Methods An expert consensus conference was convened including key stakeholders to address genetic counseling and testing, PCA screening, and management informed by evidence review. Results Consensus was strong that patients should engage in shared decision making for genetic testing. There was strong consensus to test HOXB13 for suspected hereditary PCA, BRCA1/2 for suspected hereditary breast and ovarian cancer, and DNA mismatch repair genes for suspected Lynch syndrome. There was strong consensus to factor BRCA2 mutations into PCA screening discussions. BRCA2 achieved moderate consensus for factoring into early-stage management discussion, with stronger consensus in high-risk/advanced and metastatic setting. Agreement was moderate to test all men with metastatic castration-resistant PCA, regardless of family history, with stronger agreement to test BRCA1/2 and moderate agreement to test ATM to inform prognosis and targeted therapy. Conclusion To our knowledge, this is the first comprehensive, multidisciplinary consensus statement to address a genetic evaluation framework for inherited PCA in the multigene testing era. Future research should focus on developing a working definition of familial PCA for clinical genetic testing, expanding understanding of genetic contribution to aggressive PCA, exploring clinical use of genetic testing for PCA management, genetic testing of African American males, and addressing the value framework of genetic evaluation and testing men at risk for PCA-a clinically heterogeneous disease.

Catalytic cross-metathesis is a central transformation in chemistry, yet corresponding methods for the stereoselective generation of acyclic trisubstituted alkenes in either the E or the Z isomeric forms are not known. The key problems are a lack of chemoselectivity-namely, the preponderance of side reactions involving only the less hindered starting alkene, resulting in homo-metathesis by-products-and the formation of short-lived methylidene complexes. By contrast, in catalytic cross-coupling, substrates are more distinct and homocoupling is less of a problem. Here we show that through cross-metathesis reactions involving E- or Z-trisubstituted alkenes, which are easily prepared from commercially available starting materials by cross-coupling reactions, many desirable and otherwise difficult-to-access linear E- or Z-trisubstituted alkenes can be synthesized efficiently and in exceptional stereoisomeric purity (up to 98 per cent E or 95 per cent Z). The utility of the strategy is demonstrated by the concise stereoselective syntheses of biologically active compounds, such as the antifungal indiacen B and the anti-inflammatory coibacin D.

BACKGROUND:MEK1 mutation and activated MAPK signaling has been found in patients with RASopathies and abnormal cardiac development. Previous studies have suggested that regulation of fetal MAPK signaling is essential for normal cardiac development. We investigated the effect of active MEK1 overexpression on fetal atrial septal development. METHODS AND RESULTS:An inducible double transgenic (DTg) mouse model was developed in which cardiac-specific fetal expression of a constitutively active form of human MEK1 (aMEK1) was induced primarily in the atrium via the withdrawal of doxycycline from the drinking water of pregnant mice. Atrial septal defect (ASD) was found in 51% (23/45) of DTg mice. Fifty-two percent (12/23) of ASD mice died before weaning, and surviving ASD mice exhibited hypertrophic hearts with enlarged right atria and decreased fractional shorting (40 ± 2% vs. 48 ± 0%, p

Background: Preventing student academic failure is crucial to student health and life success. Previous studies suggest a positive school climate may reduce students' risk for academic failure and contribute to academic success. The purpose of this study was to determine the longitudinal associations between school climate and academic grades in a group of middle school students who transition into high school. Methods: Parallel latent growth curve modeling was used to examine changes among study variables longitudinally using a sample of 2604 in 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade students across 16 regional schools located in 3 counties in West Virginia. Results: Students with higher perceptions of a positive school climate exhibited sustained or improved academic achievement over time ([beta] = 0.22 to 0.30, p < 0.01). Higher positive perceptions of school climate appear to sustain students who earn As/Bs ([beta] = 0.20 to 0.27, p < 0.01) and strengthen students who earn Cs/Ds/Fs ([beta] = -0.16 to -0.46, p < 0.05). Conclusions: Positive student perceptions of school climate may sustain high academic performance while strengthening students who earn Cs/Ds/Fs. School climate may be useful as an intervention to support school-based health promotion to reduce the achievement gap in the United States.

The use of weightlifting exercises is prevalent in competitive and recreational environments, as well as sport-specific training. Traditionally, weightlifting coaches prescribe specific training loads based on an individual's maximal ability. Velocity-based training offers an alternative method that promises to quantify strength based on velocity and provides information that increases competitiveness through real-time feedback. Various velocity measurement devices are available on the market. Their precision is critical for the adequate implementation of velocity-based training. The aim of the present study was to compare the concentric peak velocity measurements of five of these devices during two weightlifting movements, the snatch and clean, to data collected with a 12-camera motion capture system, which was considered as gold standard. It was hypothesized that the velocity measurement devices used in this study would vary in accuracy based on their retail prices. Velocity readings associated with light and moderate (40% and 70% of one-repetition max) loads were measured for both the snatch and clean performed by 12 competitive weightlifters. A least products regression was used to assess validity by comparing five devices against a criterion measure. A general linear model showed statistical differences in the velocities measured with these five devices (p < 0.001). Specifically, the GymAware RS linear position transducer was the most accurate device, demonstrating no fixed or proportional bias when used to quantify velocity during the snatch and clean. The remaining four devices significantly underestimated peak velocity, which would directly impact the daily planning of lifters' training. BACKGROUND: The school climate concept has been promising, but has long‐standing critiques that have not been adequately addressed to date. The School as a Protective Factor approach represents one attempt to offer a new approach that builds on and extends beyond the concept of school climate while addressing previously identified limitations. CONTRIBUTIONS TO THEORY: The School as a Protective Factor approach offers a new framework for conceptualizing, measuring, and establishing protective school social and learning environments that co‐promote academic achievement and student health in schools, especially student mental health and substance use/abuse prevention. This new framework includes clear definitions, explicit goals, firmly established constructs, validated measures, and an intentionally parsimonious approach that prioritizes the implementation of well‐established, high‐impact constructs. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS FOR SCHOOL HEALTH POLICY, PRACTICE, AND EQUITY: The School as a Protective Factor approach presents a simple, easy‐to‐use means of ensuring a school social environment that meets the developmental, academic, and health needs of all children and adolescents while maximizing protection across a range of desired outcomes. Perhaps most importantly, it does so in a manner that is manageable and easily integrated into every aspect of schooling, resonates with the practical experience of school personnel, and includes brief, effective, and free measurement tools. BACKGROUND: The conceptual framework for School as a Protective Factor approach was presented in a companion article in this issue of the journal. The current article describes the validation of the School as a Protective Factor‐Brief (SPF‐Brief), a 13‐item survey measuring the 3 core constructs and 13 defining characteristics of this framework. METHODS: The SPF‐Brief was validated through 2 studies. The developmental study used a longitudinal design including 1349 participants who completed surveys over 5 semesters, while the validation study used a cross‐sectional design with 2775 participants. Both studies included middle and high school students. Factor analysis, growth model analysis, criterion‐related validation, and outcome analysis were employed. RESULTS: Analyses provided strong evidence supporting the reliability and validity of the instrument and conceptual framework. Higher SPF‐Brief scores were associated with higher math grades, English grades, and quality of life, as well as lower rates of anxiety, depression, conduct disorder, alcohol, e‐cigarette, tobacco, and cannabis use. Effect size estimates ranged from moderate to strong. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest the utility of the SPF‐Brief instrument and the School as a Protective Factor framework. RationaleWe have hypothesized that post-infarction cardiac remodeling can be influenced by shifts in the balance between intracellular mediators of "pathologic" and "physiologic" hypertrophy. Although alpha1 adrenergic receptors (alpha1-ARs) mediate pro-adaptive hypertrophy during pressure overload, little is known about their role or downstream mediators after myocardial infarction.MethodsWe performed loss-of-function experiments via coronary ligation in alpha1A-AR knockout (AKO) mice. Post-myocardial infarction (MI) remodeling was evaluated via echocardiography, quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis of cardiac fetal gene expression, histologic analysis of myocyte size, post-MI fibrosis and apoptosis, and Western blot analysis of apoptotic regulators.ResultsAlpha1A-AR knockout paradoxically increased post-MI hypertrophy compared to wild type controls (WT), but also increased ventricular dilatation, fibrosis, apoptosis, and 4-week post-MI mortality (64% in AKO vs. 25% in WT, P = 0.02), suggesting a shift toward greater pathologic hypertrophy in the absence of pro-adaptive alpha1A effects. alpha1A-AR knockout increased phospho-p38 levels in the pre-MI myocardium compared to WT (0.55 ± 0.16 vs. 0.03 ± 0.01, P
