53. The Challenge of Short-Term Service-Learning

Abstract

This paper presents the results of interviews with staff from 64 community organizations regarding their experiences with service-learners. One of the themes that emerged from the interviews focused on concerns related to short-term service-learning commitments that last a semester or less. We explore the challenges presented to community groups by short-term service: investment of staff time; staff capacity to train and supervise; incompatibility with direct client service; timing and project management; and academic calendar issues. Despite these obstacles, many community organization staff reported their desire to continue working with service-learners for altruistic and other reasons. The paper concludes with thoughts on how to deal with the challenges presented by short-term service-learning.

Abstract

All people have to deal with feelings of loneliness, isolation, fear, and lack of acceptance, especially in the teenage years. Both of the novels "Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes" and "Frankenstein" deal with these issues. By 10th grade, students are really searching for who they are and what they want out of life. It is especially important to these adolescents that they have a place where they belong and feel comfortable. In both these novels the main characters are isolated because of their appearances. In "Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes," Eric "Moby" Calhoune is extremely overweight, and Sarah Byrnes is grotesquely scarred from severe burns she received as a child. In "Frankenstein," the monster is so terrifying that even his creator cannot bear to look at him. Both books deal with religious implications, and both books deal with father motifs. The novels contain difficult subjects to discuss, but they can raise questions in students' minds and help them to analyze and determine how they view the world and their role in it. This curriculum unit, designed for use in grade 10, provides unit objectives for each novel and for the combined novels; suggests diverse motivation ideas for the teacher to implement; offers sample motivation quizzes; presents student activities; gives general discussion questions for the teacher to use; and presents study guide questions for the students. The unit also provides a vocabulary quiz; suggests follow-up activities; discusses evaluation; and offers several sample tests. (Contains a list of 18 resources.) (NKA)

60. What's Mine Is Mine and What's Yours Is Mine: Peer Response and Intellectual Property at the New Millennium.

Abstract

This paper discusses the juxtaposition of teamwork as found in school writing assignments with the value of individual work as demonstrated in the ideas of intellectual property and copyright. It begins by addressing the question of whether students perceive collaborative writing tools such as peer response as helping or hindering them when faced with writing for a grade in a writing course. It then discusses the dichotomy between ideas and expression, in terms of the contradiction of free exchange of information at the student-to-student level and published (non-free) information gathered from printed texts, oral interviews, e-mail and Web sites. It continues by describing the results of a student survey regarding individual ownership, peer response, and the recent Napster copyright lawsuit, concluding that students feel information should be free as long as there is a benefit in terms of capital, for example, exchange of written ideas for a grade. The paper concludes by proposing a portfolio system which would move conceptually from intellectual property-as-commodity toward a contextually situated concept of writing, through students acknowledging the participants in their writing processes, especially the influences of peer responders. 76. Computer Proficiency for Online Learning: Factorial Invariance of Scores among Teachers

Abstract

Online learning is variously employed in K-12 education, including for teacher professional development. However, the use of computer-based technologies for learning purposes assumes learner computer proficiency, making this construct an important domain of procedural knowledge in formal and informal online learning contexts. Addressing this concern, this study examined the score properties and invariance (N = 11,709) of an eight-item self-report measure of computer proficiency for online learning, the CPOL. Results from a confirmatory factor analysis suggest that the hypothesized unidimensional structure undergirded the instrument's scores, and invariance analyses suggested that the instrument functions similarly across teacher populations defined by gender, grade level taught, and age, and over time. Specifically, the results showed "strict" score invariance for all teacher groupings except for age. Discussed are potential proximal and distal applications of, and directions for future research concerning the CPOL.

Abstract

In species with obligate sexual reproduction, scarcity of males can occasionally limit female reproductive success. It is unclear, however, whether this impacts population-level persistence. Sexually deceptive orchids attract mate-searching male insects who lose time, mating opportunities and may even become sperm depleted by mating with flowers. These insects are almost exclusively haplodiploid, and able to reproduce regardless of sperm availability – which might mitigate costs of deception. We model the population dynamics of deceived diploid or haplodiploid pollinators. The model reveals that haplodiploidy can enhance prospects for coexistence. If ‘sperm theft' by orchids is severe enough to generate unmated females in the local pollinator pool, this enhances the production of sons, which are subsequently available to act as pollinators. The mechanism relies on female haplodiploids being able to reproduce with or without sperm; this is absent in many diploid insects – where unmated females do not reproduce. We show that this gives haplodiploids an ability to maintain higher population densities, and to persist up to higher orchid densities, than diploids. Our model identifies the enhanced resilience of haplodiploid pollinators against deceptive exploitation as a possible reason why these systems have persisted.

Abstract

The major histocompatibility complex class Ib protein, Qa-1(b), serves as a ligand for murine CD94/NKG2A natural killer (NK) cell inhibitory receptors. The Qa-1(b) peptide-binding site is predominantly occupied by a single nonameric peptide, Qa-1 determinant modifier (Qdm), derived from the leader sequence of H-2D and L molecules. Five anchor residues were identified in this study by measuring the peptide-binding affinities of substituted Qdm peptides in experiments with purified recombinant Qa-1(b). A candidate peptide-binding motif was determined by sequence analysis of peptides eluted from Qa-1 that had been folded in the presence of random peptide libraries or pools of Qdm derivatives randomized at specific anchor positions. The results indicate that Qa-1(b) can bind a diverse repertoire of peptides but that Qdm has an optimal primary structure for binding Qa-1(b). Flow cytometry experiments with Qa-1(b) tetramers and NK target cell lysis assays demonstrated that CD94/NKG2A discriminates between Qa-1(b) complexes containing peptides with substitutions at nonanchor positions P4, P5, or P8. Our findings suggest that it may be difficult for viruses to generate decoy peptides that mimic Qdm and raise the possibility that competitive replacement of Qdm with other peptides may provide a novel mechanism for activation of NK cells.

91. Development and Verification of CTIndexCorrection Methods to Normalize Air Void Content and Thickness of Field Cores

Abstract

The IDEAL cracking test (IDEAL-CT) (ASTM D8225) provides a fracture mechanics-based parameter: cracking tolerance index or CTIndexwhich is sensitive to specimen thickness and air void (AV) content. The CTIndexof field cores with variable thicknesses and AV contents are not comparable to those of laboratory-compacted specimens prepared at specified values. This study analyzed the CTIndexsensitivity to these features by preparing reheated plant-mixed laboratory-compacted (RPMLC) specimens with variable thickness and AV content and developing thickness and AV content correction factors. The correction factors were obtained using trendline equations from the relationships between CTIndexand varying thickness and CTIndexand varying AV content. The correction factors were then applied to RPMLC specimens fabricated with variable thickness and AV content and compared with RPMLC specimens prepared at 62 ± 1 mm and 7 ± 0.5% AV. CTIndexresults were comparable, and one correction method was proposed. This method was applied to replicate field cores of 22 independent mixtures and compared with RPMLC specimens fabricated at 62 ± 1 mm and 7 ± 0.5% AV. CTIndexresults of field cores and the RPMLC specimens still showed differences after applying the correction method, suggesting the need for a different (larger) CTIndexthreshold for field cores. Finally, more data are required to improve the proposed correction methods and more mixtures need to be evaluated to consider a wider range of thickness, AV, component materials, and aging conditions.
