The study deals with the evaluation of the antioxidant capacity of extracts from the aerial part of Algerian Ajuga iva. Extraction of flavonoids was carried out by 85% of methanol, then the crude extract was successively separated with ethyl acetate, butanol, and water. The in vitro antioxidant activity was assessed by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl, reducing power, and thiobarbituric acid reacting substances assays. Extracts are subject to HPLC-UV analysis. The average total phenol contents of extracts vary between 3.87 ± 0.17 and 149.74 ± 3.94 (gallic acid equivalent per gram of dry extract). Furthermore, tested extracts exhibited a broad range of flavonoid contents varying from 1.54 ± 0.09 to 41.18 ± 1.03 (catechin equivalent per gram of dry extract). Butanol and ethyl acetate fractions displayed the highest antioxidant activity. A good correlation between the phenolic and flavonoid contents and the antioxidant activity was observed. Rutin, caffeic acid, quercetin, p-coumaric acid, luteolin, and cinnamic acid were present in the extracts. The plant could be a potential source of antioxidant agents.

Laurusnobilis is an aromatic plant, widespread in Algeria and widely used by local people as a source of spice and for its medicinal properties. The essential oil of this plant native to western Algeria is the subject of our study. The essential oil extraction was performed by steam distillation, the yield obtained from leaf is (1.5 %) by gavage Wistar rats males weight between 100g 80et were infected with Salmonella then treated with a dose 1 g / kg of the essential oil. In the day of sacrifice of the rats some parameters were determined: hemoglobin concentration (Hgb); haematocrit (Hct) and lymphocytes (white blood cell). Enterobacter cloacae is currently known as a urinary tract infection agent, especially in hospitals recognized by its resistance to 3rd generation cephalosporin’s, which makes it a target for different works in order to find natural and definitive means of fight and treatment. Their limited biochemical reactivity and their different morphotypes is a real obstacle to their identification by conventional phenotypic means. 16S rRNA and 18S rRNA gene sequencing is highly successful for bacterial identification. However, in recent years, matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time in flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) has emerged as a very valid technique for the identification and diagnosis of microorganisms. Our study aims to identify three bacteria belonging to the Enterobacter cloacae species isolated from various environments by the MALDI-TOF/MS method and then to study their antimicrobial activity against some extracts of dried figs of Ficus carica fruits grown in the mascara region (western Algeria). The determination of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) shows a significant inhibition of the activity of E. cloacae by the methanolic extract of El-Keurt variety at 2.34 mg/ml of extract. The present study deals with the evaluation of the in vitro antioxidant and antimicrobial potential of four different extracts of two varieties ( Azendjar and Taamriout) of dried figs ( Ficus carica L.) by using the 2,2-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical and agar diffusion methods and minimum inhibitory concentration ( MIC)-determination. Moreover, the extracts were investigated for their polyphenolic, flavonoidal and tannin content by using the Folin- Ciocalteu assay, the aluminium trichloride method and precipitation with casein, respectively. The results showed that the highest antioxidant capacity was exhibited by the methanol extract of Azendjar variety with IC50 of 0.080 mg/mL. All extracts possessed more or less antimicrobial activity against the tested Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Candida albicans was the most susceptible microorganism to all extracts. Pronounced antimicrobial activity was observed by the methanolic extract of Taamriout variety ( MIC values 32-128 μg/mL). Moreover, the results showed that the phenolic compounds and flavonoids were abundant in acetone and aqueous extracts. Practical Applications Dried Fig ( Ficus carica L.) fruit is an important part of traditional Mediterranean Algerian diet since antiquity. Obtained results revealed great antioxidant and antimicrobial activities as well as high content of phenolic compounds of two varieties growing in Algeria namely Azendjar and Taamriout varieties. This study highlights the importance of Algerian dried figs as a source of antioxidants and antimicrobial agents to be used in traditional medicine to treat or protect humans against infections as well as other chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cancer and different inflammations. Sutures are medical devices used in surgery. They serve as tissues stabilizers in contact with or near to the surgical site without compromising the healing process. They must keep their physical properties for the necessary time, in particular tensile strength. In view of the wide variety of references offered by all specialtys combined, which supply sutures with all materials described, whose use is indicated for all surgical procedures. The objective of this work is to evaluate the tensile strength of absorbable and non-absorbable sutures for a period of 10 to 28 days under conditions simulated by the oral route. 5 sutures materials were tested with a metric diameter of 1.5 and 4.The tensile strength test was used according to the protocol of the European Pharmacopoeia (Eur.Ph.9.5). 5 fragments of each material were measured before and after their immersion in Artificial Saliva (AS). In AS, the Polypropylene suture significantly maintained (p = 5%) its tensile strength compared to that of Polyamide. For absorbable sutures, a loss of more than 70% of their initial strength was marked on the 7th day of immersion. In view of the results obtained, during oral surgical operations, the material of choice is in favor of Propylene.

Growth and reproductive performance traits are important economic indicators for analyzing the overall performance of breeding systems. This study aims to evaluate the comparative performance of two Algerian sheep (Rumbi and Hamra) in terms of growth and reproductive performance, and the effect of factors such as breed, season of birth, mode of birth and age of the mother on this performance in a semi-intensive breeding system. The reproductive performance of 577 Rumbi ewes and 1328 Hamra ewes bred at the Tiaret and Saïda experimental stations respectively, was analyzed using performance monitoring data. Fertility rates for the Rumbi and Hamra breeds of 87.14% and 78.8% respectively were practically similar (p > 0,05). Litter size at birth and weaning was significantly higher in the Hamra breed than in the Rumbi breed (p < 0,05). Weaning mortality was significantly higher in the Hamra breed than in the Rumbi breed, with an average of 22.60% versus 14.94% (p < 0,05). The effect of factors showed that there was a highly significant effect of the mother's age and season of birth on the reproductive performance of the Hamra and Rumbi breeds with a p < 0.0001 on fertility, litter size at birth, litter size at weaning and fertility. There was a significant effect of the year factor on reproductive performance with p = 0,013 for the Hamra breed and p = 0,031 for the Rumbi breed. The results of this study showed that Rumbi lambs were heavier at birth than Hamra lambs. The values observed were 4,86 kg versus 3,10 kg for the Hamra breed, with a highly significant difference (p < 0,0001), so that the average daily pre-weaning weight gains of Rumbi lambs were higher than those of Hamra lambs, at 0,195 kg/day versus 0,113 kg/day for Hamra lambs, with a high significance (p < 0,0001). The effect of factors showed that there was a significant effect of the mother's age on the ADGs (0-30), (30-70) and (70-90) of the Hamra and Rumbi breeds with a p = 0,034 and p = 0,02 respectively. There was also a highly significant effect of the birth mode effect on ADGs (0-30), (30-70) and (70-90) only for the Hamra breed with a p = 0,004. The effect of the birth weight on ADGs was not significant for both Hamra and Rumbi breeds with a p > 0,05. According to the findings of this study, the Hamra breed had superior reproductive potential and the Rumbi breed had superior growth. The Hamra breed showed better maternal skills in terms of fertility and prolificacy, while the Rumbi breed showed better lamb growth performance. Background: There is extensive interindividual variability in response and tolerance to anticancer drugs. This heterogeneity provides a major limitation to the "rational" use of cytotoxic drugs, and it becomes a major problem in oncology giving a narrow therapeutic window with a vital risk. Among these anticancer drugs, irinotecan can cause dose-limiting toxicities, commonly diarrhea and neutropenia. Interaction among pathways of activation/inactivation ( UGT1A1 ) and hepatobiliary transport of irinotecan and its metabolites could, in part, explain its interindividual variability. The objective of this study was to perform an exploratory analysis to evaluate the correlation between the genetic polymorphisms of UGT1A1 and ABCC2 with the different toxicities associated with irinotecan treatment. Materials and Methods: Seventy-five patients with solid cancers were included, all were administered an irinotecan-based regimen in both Mission Bay Medical Center; and Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital from May 2016 to December 2016. The patients' genotyping was performed for both the UGT1A1 *28 polymorphism, and the ABCC2  - 1549G>A, and ABCC2  - 1249G>A single nucleotide polymorphism. Comparisons among qualitative data were assessed using the χ 2 -test, and Fisher's exact test in the case of small group sizes. Results: Diarrhea was observed in 40 patients (53.3%), among them only 9 patients had high grades diarrhea (grades III and IV). Grades III/IV of nausea were more frequently associated with the ABCC2 -1549 AA genotype (83.3% p  = 0.004) in patients with colorectal cancer. In pancreatic cancer, a significant absence of diarrhea grades III-IV was noted in patients with the ABCC2 1249 GG genotype compared to the other ABCC2 1249 genotypes.

Objective: Irinotecan (CPT-11) is an important drug used in the treatment of several solid tumor types. To minimize its toxicity, therapeutic drug monitoring of CPT-11 and its major metabolites (SN-38, SN-38-glucuronide [SN-38G], and APC) has been proposed. We aimed to develop a liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method for the quantification of CPT-11 and its major metabolites in plasma., Methods: Specimen preparation consisted of protein precipitation, evaporation, and reconstitution. Analyses were performed on a C18 column using reverse-phase gradient elution. Electrospray ionization and multiple reaction monitoring in positive mode were used for MS. The following heavy isotope-labeled internal standards were used: CPT-11 D10, SN-38 D3, SN-38G D3, and APC D3., Results: We found that CPT-11, SN-38G, and APC eluted at ~4.6 to 4.7 minutes, and SN-38 eluted at ~5.1 to 5.2 minutes. A second peak for SN-38 was detected at ~4.6 to 4.7 minutes. Given that the structure of SN-38 is found in CPT-11, SN-38G, and APC, and in the CPT-11 D10 used here, in-source fragmentation was the likely cause. In addition, we found that a low-level SN-38 impurity was present in CPT-11 D10 and to a lesser extent in SN-38 D3., Conclusion: When developing methods for CPT-11 and its metabolites, it is important to consider the effects of in-source fragmentation and the choice of internal standards., (© American Society for Clinical Pathology, 2021. Background: Ifosfamide-induced encephalopathy (IIE) is a rare and serious adverse reaction. Thus far, no standard medication has been documentedto be efficient in the reversal of IIE, and while ifosfamide infusion interruption and hydration are recommended, methylene blue (MB) administration remains controversial., Methods: We retrospectively reviewed medical records to assess cases with IIE after ifosfamide infusion. We included all patients having received an ifosfamide infusion during their hospitalization in the medical oncology unit of the National Institute of Oncology in Rabat, Morocco, between September 2016 and September 2017. We subsequently conducted a literature review to determine the role of MB in IIE by searching PubMed using the terms "Methylene Blue" and "Ifosfamide"., Results: A total of 88 patients received ifosfamide, and four patients had IIE. Ifosfamide infusion was stopped immediately after the IIE occurrence, and patients underwent renal function correction with hydration. All patients received MB infusion, and three patients had an improvement of their neurological status. As regards the literature review, 34 articles were reviewed and 16 items were included in the review. Overall, 38 (65.5%) patients received MB infusion and 28 (75.6%) patients responded favorably to the treatment., Conclusions: Methylene blue can be used as a treatment for IIE owing to the severity of the IIE as well as absence of standard medication. Nonetheless, side effects such as serotonergic syndrome should be investigated. More broadly, prospective studies and controlled trials are needed to explore the contribution of MB in IIE management and encourage its use.

Background: In front of the polymorphic bacterial ecology and antibiotic resistance in diabetic patients with foot infections and good patient care, collaboration between clinicians and microbiologists is needed to improve assessment and management of patients with this pathology., Objective: This study was designed to characterize the bacterial ecology of diabetic foot infection (DFIs) and to determine the different mechanisms of resistance involved., Methods: In this study bacterial strains and antibiotic resistance profiles were determined from diabetic foot infections patients ( n  = 117). The identification of resistance mechanisms, such as penicillinase and/or extended-spectrum β-lactamase production (ESBL), methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and efflux pump over-expression were performed., Results: A high prevalence of Gram-negative bacteria (61%) with Escherichia coli, and other Enterobacteriaceae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa being the predominant isolates. Gram positive bacteria mainly represented by Staphylococcus aureus accounted for 39% of the isolates. 93.5% of the Enterobacteriaceae were resistant to, at least, one molecule in the β-lactam family, while the majority of the Staphylococci were resistant to penicillin G and tetracycline (93.3% and 71.7%). The majority of non-fermenting Gram negative bacteria were also resistant to fluoroquinolones. β-lactamase detection tests revealed the presence of extended-spectrum β-lactamase in 43.5% of the Enterobacteriaceae, while methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus represented 18.2% of the isolates. Additionally, 50.9% of non-fermenting Gram negative bacteria were overproducing efflux pumps., Conclusion: All Acinetobacter Baumannii were Multidrug-Resistant (MDR), as the majority of Staphylococci, and Enterobacteriaceae. Background: Colorectal Cancer (CRC) is a major health problem around the globe. In Morocco, the disease ranks third after breast and lung cancers. This study is the first in Morocco to investigate epidemiological, clinical and therapeutic features while exhaustively describing toxic side-effects to chemotherapy of CRC and studying the 3-years survivorship., Methods: This is a descriptive and analytical retrospective study of about 290 patients with CRC enrolled during the period of January-December 2013. Statistical analysis was performed to correlate clinicopathological data with chemotherapy toxicity and survivorship in patients, by Chi 2 test. Overall Survival (OS) rate has been calculated by the Kaplan-Meier method and compared using Log-rank test., Results: Fifty-five percent had a tumor localized in rectum, and 42,8% in colon. Mean age of these patients at diagnosis was 56,16 ± 14,6. incidence rate of adverse events (grade I to IV) was 85,6%. Diarrhea was the predominant toxicity (4.6%) occurring at a high grade (grade III-IV).The 3-years OS rate of patients with CRC was 71%. OS decreased by age, and patients with age subgroup between 40 to 59 years had a better OS than the other age subgroups (60 to 79 years and >80 years) with a p-value of 0.0001. Occurence of toxicity (all grades and types) was linked to a higher survival rates compared to the group who had no toxicity noticed (p-value of 0.001)., Conclusion: Our study shows that patients who had a polychemotherapy had a better OS than those who had monotherapy (p-value of 0.002)., (© 2019 Zineb A., et al.)

Catechol oxidase (PPO) was extracted and purified from Tadela (Phoenix dactylifera L.) date fruit, by a procedure that included (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 precipitation followed by dialysis, Q-Sepharose bb ion-exchange chromatography and HPLC gel filtration chromatography. Some of its biochemical characteristics were studied. The purification rate and the yield were 80% and 20%, respectively. The Tadela date fruit catechol oxidase exhibited a molecular weight of 90 kDa using SDS-PAGE. The catechol oxidase showed only o‑diphenolase and triphenolase activities while no monophenolase activity was detected. A better affinity was observed using catechol as substrate (Km = 35 mM) with thus, a higher Vmax/Km ratio (80 U/mM·mL). This enzyme is thermostable in the temperature range (30-60 °C) with optimum activity in acidic range of pH. Four inhibitors were used for the control of enzymatic browning, of which sodium metabisulfite was the most potent (IC 50  = 0, 11 mM). The values of K I and mechanism of inhibition were also determined. No significant change on enzyme activity was noticed in the presence of metal ion and detergents. Therefore, thermal inactivation was studied in the temperature range between 60 and 80 °C using catechol as substrate. An in vitro evaluation of the antimicrobial activity of essential oil (EO) and methanol extract (ME) from Algerian Nigella sativa L. seeds against microbial strains isolated from the oral cavities of periodontal patients was performed. Twelve Gram-positive bacteria, eleven Gram-negative bacteria and three microscopic fungi strains were isolated and identified. The antimicrobial activities of EO and ME were tested against Staphylococcus aureus , Staphylococcus epidermidis , Streptococcus pneumoniae , Enterococcus faecalis , Klebsiella pneumoniae , Proteus sp., Acinetobacter baumannii/calcoaceticus , Porphyromonas sp., Veillonella sp ., Candida sp. and Saccharomyces sp.. The total polyphenol and flavonoids contents of ME were higher than those of EO. Thin layer chromatography showed that catechin, gallic acid and quercetin were most likely present in the extracts. Fourier transform infrared spectrometry analysis (FT-IR) indicated the presence of bands from the CO groups of acids, alcohols, phenols, and ethers and the C[bond, double bond]O band of aldehydes. Analysis of the antimicrobial activity of N. sativa extracts obtained by the microdilution method showed excellent bactericidal activity of the essential oil and moderate efficiency of the ME against all the microbes tested. Staphylococcus epidermidis and Porphyromonas sp. were the most sensitive to EO (minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC): 16,500 μg/ml) at 48 h of incubation and, 125,000 μg/ml of ME was the most active against all the microbes tested. However, after18 or 24 h, this efficiency was decreased in some strains. In addition, Saccharomyces sp. and Candida albicans were more sensitive to EO than ME during the incubation, while this efficiency was clearly not visible with the agar well method, and most microbes tested presented remarkable resistance to these extracts., (© 2018 The Authors.)

Introduction: Centralized preparation of anticancer drugs meets quality and safety objectives. Its economic interest has been the subject of several studies, with very heterogeneous methodological approaches., Objective: This study evaluates the economic impact of the centralization of the preparation of chemotherapy in the national institute of oncology of Rabat, the referral institute in the management of cancer in Morocco., Materials and Methods: The analysis included 3000 preparations. It compared the costs of anticancer drugs in a centralized unit at theoretical costs in the healthcare units, modelled according to two approaches., Result: With a conservative approach, the impact of centralization was estimated at 80%. The centralized system made it possible to materialize 80% of the potential gain. The remaining 20% is considered a loss. It was very much related to the preparation of the expensive molecules (90%)., Conclusion: Centralization thus allows a better distribution of roles within the hospital and provides a source of self-financing for quality improvement., (Copyright © 2017 Académie Nationale de Pharmacie. Improvement of oat lines via introgression is an important process for food biochemical functionality. This work aims to evaluate the protective effect of phenolic compounds from hybrid Oat line (F11-5) and its parent (Amlal) on hyperglycemia-induced oxidative stress and to establish the possible mechanisms of antidiabetic activity by digestive enzyme inhibition. Eight phenolic acids were quantified in our samples including ferulic, p -hydroxybenzoic, caffeic, salicylic, syringic, sinapic, p -coumaric and chlorogenic acids. The Oat extract (2000 mg/kg) ameliorated the glucose tolerance, decreased Fasting Blood Glucose (FBG) and oxidative stress markers, including Superoxide dismutase (SOD), Catalase (CAT), Glutathione peroxidase (GPx), Glutathione (GSH) and Malondialdehyde (MDA) in rat liver and kidney. Furthermore, Metformin and Oat intake prevented anxiety, hypercholesterolemia and atherosclerosis in diabetic rats. In vivo anti-hyperglycemic effect of Oat extracts has been confirmed by their inhibitory activities on α-amylase (723.91 μg/mL and 1027.14 μg/mL) and α-glucosidase (1548.12 μg/mL & 1803.52 μg/mL) enzymes by mean of a mixed inhibition., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Rosmarinus officinalis L., a medicinal herb from the labiates family, has been reported to have potential benefit in the treatment and prevention of several diseases. In particular its phenolics have demonstrated protective effects on various types of cancer through several mechanisms. The present study aimed to determine the effects of rosemary phenolic extracts on human cell functions, with particular regard to their anti-proliferative properties in three cell types U937, CaCo-2 and the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). The radical scavenging and Ferric reducing abilities of the extracts have been assessed as well as their cyto-toxicity and effects on cell cycle distribution and apoptosis. About 13 compounds were identified with dominance of rosmarinic acid in the methanolic extract and phenolic diterpens in the ethyl acetate fraction (Carnosol, Carnosic acid and methyl Carnosate). The total polyphenolic content was important in the first extract with 2.589 ± 0.005 g/100 g in gallic acid equivalent compared to 0.763 ± 0.005 g/100 g. The methanolic fraction displayed higher antioxidant activity (DPPH IC50 : 0.510 mg/mL and FRAP: 1.714 ± 0.068 mmol Fe 2+ /g) while ethyl acetate showed pronounced antiproliferative effects (IC 50 : 14.85 ± 0.20µg/mL and 14.95 ± 2.32 µg/mL respectively for U937 and CaCo-2 cells). The anti-proliferative effect was associated with a cell cycle arrest in S phase for U937 (62% of the population at 5 µg/mL) with a concomitant decrease in G1 and G2/M phases. Tested extracts displayed in addition early apoptotic effects in U937 and late apoptosis in CaCo-2 cells. The obtained data indicate that the identified phenolics are at least partially responsible for the observed cytotoxicity.

Epstein-Barr virus-induced gene 3 (EBI3) is a subunit of the composite cytokines IL-27 and IL-35. Both have beneficial functions or effects in models of infectious and autoimmune diseases. This suggests that administration of EBI3 could be therapeutically useful by binding free p28 and p35 to generate IL-27 and IL-35. IL-27- and IL-35-independent functions of EBI3 could compromise its therapeutic uses. We therefore assessed the effects of EBI3 on cytokine receptor-expressing cells. We observed that EBI3 activates STAT3 and induces the proliferation of the IL-6-dependent B9 mouse plasmacytoma cell line. Analyses using blocking mAbs and Ba/F3 transfectants expressing gp130 indicate that EBI3 activity was linked to its capacity to mediate IL-6 trans -signaling, albeit less efficiently than soluble IL-6Rα. In line with this interpretation, co-immunoprecipitation and SPR experiments indicated that EBI3 binds IL-6. An important pro-inflammatory function of IL-6 trans -signaling is to activate blood vessel endothelial cells. We observed that EBI3 in combination with IL-6 could induce the expression of chemokines by human venal endothelial cells. Our results indicate that EBI3 can promote pro-inflammatory IL-6 functions by mediating trans -signaling. These unexpected observations suggest that use of EBI3 as a therapeutic biologic for autoimmune diseases will likely require co-administration of soluble gp130 to prevent the side effects associated with IL-6 trans -signaling. This study investigates the accumulation and distribution of nickel in Arundo donax L. parts to assess the potential use of this plant in phytoremediation of Ni-contaminated soils. The effect of ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA) and nutrient solution containing NPK on the plant was proped. A 35-day pot experiment was performed in the laboratory and the pots were irrigated with Ni-contaminated solution combined or not with EDTA and NPK. The growth of plants was evaluated at the end of the experiment. The accumulation of Ni was analyzed by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). The obtained results indicate that the plant was able to survive with high Ni content. The growth and the concentrations of Ni in the plant tissues were less affected. In the absence of the amendments, Ni was accumulated in the stems and leaves. However, the addition of NPK significantly reduced Ni concentration in the stems and leaves. The application of EDTA enhanced Ni uptake in roots. The translocation factor (TF) was greater than 1, which categorizes A. donax L. as a great candidate for Ni phytoextraction. A. donax L. is suitable for phytoremediation of Ni. This investigation contributes to the studies on the potential of phytoremediation technologies in Algeria.

Daphne gnidium L. (Thymeleacees) is a famous Moroccan plant with cancer-related ethnobotanical use. Previously, we demonstrated that ethyl acetate extract of D. gnidium had antiproliferative and pro-apoptotic potential on human breast tumor MCF-7 cells. The purpose of this study was to investigate if the antiproliferative effect of this extract was similar for different human cancer cell lines such as A549 lung cancer and SMMC-7721 hepatoma cells. Moreover, this work essentially focused on the intrinsic apoptotic signaling pathway. Antiproliferative activity was evaluated by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide on A549 and SMMC-7721 cells. The characterization of the mechanisms involved in this effect was determined by lactate dehydrogenase test, apoptosis assays and western blot analyses. Our present study has shown that this extract strongly inhibited proliferation of A549 (IC50: 213 ± 15 μg/ml) and SMMC-7721 (IC50: 170 ± 13 μLg/ml) cells. The characterization of antiproliferative effect demonstrated that this extract was an apoptosis inducer in both cell lines tested. The results of western blot analyses have shown in SMMC-7721 cells that this extract activated caspase signaling triggered by the modulation of Bcl-2 family proteins. These findings suggest that this natural extract-induced effects may have novel therapeutic applications for the treatment of different cancer types.

Chemical investigation of the EtOAc extract of the fungus Chaetomium aureum, an endophyte of the Moroccan medicinal plant Thymelaea lythroides, afforded one new resorcinol derivative named chaetorcinol, together with five known metabolites. The structures of the isolated compounds were determined on the basis of one- and two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy and high-resolution mass spectrometry as well as by comparison with the literature. All compounds were tested for their activity towards the Hsp90 chaperoning machine in vitro using the progesterone receptor (PR) and rabbit reticulocyte lysate (RRL). Among the isolated compounds, only sclerotiorin efficiently inhibited the Hsp90 machine chaperoning activity. However, sclerotiorin showed no cytotoxic effect on breast cancer Hs578T, MDA-MB-231 and prostate cancer LNCaP cell lines.
